Cute Monster design entry

So I've recently joined Deviant art after a friend told me about a competition to design a cute monster for a T.shirt, which sounded right up my street! Here is my entry. You can decide which one the monster is;) I personally think it's the one giving the python hug your nan always gives you.

cabin in a wheat field

Just a really quick play around in Photoshop. I was listening to the horse whisperer soundtrack, thus a..not quite a ranch..but a cabin in a wheat field was born. The horses were there but I didn't want to spend any more time on this so they disappeared off to pester the farmer's cat again.
Right cabin in a field is out of my system,

I recently discovered this really cool website and downloaded the app onto my iphone, it allows anyone with a camera and a love of nature to document and upload pictures to help identify the many different wonderful species of animals and plants of our planet. Plus along the way you can collect cool patches! A really great and lovely idea, I love it. A must for any nature enthusiast! http://www.projectnoah.org/

In the meantime, while my scanner makes odd noises and decides if it want's to live or not here's a little critter (adopted by mum. I'm bad at letting them go but she's 10 times worse. Thus this little one is still living with us)

I'm a complete sucker when it comes to ROCKS. I know it sounds a little strange, but I do really love painting rock formations.
I find myself becoming a little like roy from close encounters.....

Probably not the greatest quality to admit, but hey I think artists all have some deep dark obbsession for one thing or another. Mine just happens to be rocks..

ehem..I think it's the tonal variations and all the different surfaces and textures and little dents and grooves and the epic proportions that make you feel so teeny tiny small and humble compared to awesome mother nature. Naturally occurring earth formations and patterns have always appealed to me, all types, shells and ammonites, and precious gemstones and crystals and caaaaves and all those amazing treasures of the earth- (Do you remember that magazine?! ah when Saturdays used to be the dad's flying saucer chips, travelling Rugrat stickers and treasures of the earth mag day.) -Seemingly a world away from character drawing, but I find it not so very different in ways. And wow! was I in my element when visiting the rocky moors of Dartmoor. I did do some really quick little paintings, still waiting in line to be scanned...so next post a-comin'.

These two were Christmas commissions, I really got attached to these two and named them....number rule of critter commissions. NEVER NAME THEM! It only ends in tears;) so from Pod and Newton to FRED..luckily now known as Huxtable and Eccles are, I hear, nice and cozy in their new homes.

Last week was filled with painting and animation, all the good things:) finally my poor old dusty puppet who's being laying in her bed waiting to be bought to life again is going to get animated, along with some cut out critters that I've been experimenting with.

Father Christmas joined forces with me last month and bought an early Christmas present, a very cool wacom tablet:) I'm really enjoying the freedom of it, it's amazing what you can create with it it's great fun! Here's a play around I had with one of my favourite characters, hopefully she will be around a lot more in the new year.

2012 promises to be a very interesting year, in SO many ways, I wish I hadn't read quite so much into some of it. The short of what I read was something along the lines of a great cycle within a cycle within another cycle, the stars and the winter solstice a-lining, magnetic poles switching, goats joining forces with fishes (don't ask) planet X is coming laden with alien folk (I'm totally up for an alien invasion just as long as it's not the war of the worlds kind of visit) and WOW the Mayans were clever (if not slightly bonkers at times) then I really started to scare myself, which was pointless.

Anyways what I did make sense of it through the endless end of the world death exploding doom and gloom, build shelters buy and consume and generally destroy what's left of our beautiful planet, no hope for human kind...kind of stuff-
....very uplifting (Wouldn't advise reading some of it before bed.)
-is that 2012 according to the scared Mayan and Toltec calendar signifies the end of a Great Cycle of more then 5 thousand years. Hopefully not the END of everything just the eend of one world age and the beginning of a new one. Hopefully a new age where we consume less and look after our beautiful planet and animals a lot better.

I love how the weather and colours of the changing months dictate sometimes, and appear on the page even if you haven't intentionally set out to do so. Rusty leaves and warm cosy caves filled with critters and camp fires seem to sum this month up pretty nicely. October vibes kind of flew out the window though with this painting, dreaming of a sunny holiday maybe?

Stumbled upon this really great little documentary showing some of the personal works from the awesome guys at DreamWorks, 'Moonshine' is going to be their first personal art publication- 'These artistic ninjas unveil their works of art hidden from the public eye up to now, forbidden in broad daylight: stashed so long under their folded elbow, that even the moon is not allowed a peak! MOONSHINE is this 120 page book you can steal from your friends to savor under a tree'– Christophe Lautrette.
I can't wait to steal my copy! Awesome definitely going on my Christmas list this year:)

Tis almost all hallows eve!! OooOoo all these pumpkins (midget pumpkins this year thanks odd weather) and ghoulish decorations and creepy hovering witches terrifying children in Sainsburys is great fun, I can't wait to brandish my fangs and giant rabbit suit. Lovely day at London Zoo-doodling animals with fellow animal lover/artist friend Fran! http://francescowdry.co.uk/ What could be better than being outside watching animals and drawing! It could of been warmer, but hey ho you can't have everything. I saw a hippo run... (I've never seen a hippo run) learnt that humming birds can live up to a ripe old age of 22 (with their heart beating that fast!? really?) watched rascally baby meerkats try to wake poor ole Mr and Mrs Aardvark (also known apparently as pigs or avocardos) leanrt that baby puffins are called PUFFLINGS! AMAZING has to be the greatest name on earth!! And did some animal drawings, this is the first page, I'll show you some of the others when my scanner comes back to life. I also completed Bubble shooter, all in all a pretty great day!

Fur fur everywhere! O fur why do you stick to me so!? I feel I've got more on me then the critters have sometimes. I have developed quite the yeti look. It's very attractive. Why elo again! Its nice to see you:)
Update on the work front some doodles to be shown and some critters are being made, a hot air balloon is being fabricated (unfornatley not big enough to fit in) and I'm feeling just a little drenched at the moment as I've returned and that scarey tidal wave of work has hit and I'm covered in slimy algae and pesky sea creatures who have giant suckers and massive tentacles and there all trying to suck my face off!!..............D:
*ehem....anyway:) here's my latest doodles more to come, these are just some sketches I did whilst Nonny and I enjoyed the long coach ride back to the airport, just some silly sketches of characters we happened across

the wonders of wood

I've also been experimenting painting on wood; the super textured kind of wood you'd find washed up ashore that once belonged to a battered ole pirate ship (I like to believe) and then the super smooth (characterless) kind of good ole MDF, which was A LOT easier to paint on and of which I currently have in abundance. So out came the paints! I'm still working on other images, but I have to say, I have moved back to my Bristol Board as I was getting frustrated with the unwanted bumps RIGHT UNDER THE NOSE, of all places why does it always have to be there?
