We haven't yet located the exact passage, but we're sure there's some mention in the Bible of an Eleventh Commandment:

XI.
Thou shalt expose thy toes only in Summer,
And then, lo, only in sandals or the occasional peep-toe pump.
But nay, never in boots.
'Cause that's just wrong.

Well, they say rules are made to be broken, and this one is being shattered to bits in Fall/Winter 2008. We never thought we'd see the day, but sure enough, the peep-toe bootie is this season's hottest fashion find. So if you're in the mood for something different and a little wacky (and the danger of frostbite in your area is relatively low), spice up your wardrobe with something like this hot little pair from Tory Burch.

(Oh, and if the current economic news leaves you a little leery of the price tag, you'll be happy to know there are equally cute options available at Payless.)

So, what to wear them with? Well, darlings, the models we've seen make a statement all on their own, so we'd recommend going simple with the rest of the outfit.

Even if the weather in your area is still doing a remarkable imitation of summer, take heart—it's the first day of fall!

Sure, it might be a little early to don cozy jackets and boots, but it's never too soon to hit the stores to get those Fall 2008 essentials in place.

Let's get together: tailgate party

Even if you can't tell a linebacker from a quarterback, hosting a tailgating party is a great way to get your gang back together after the flurry of summer's activities.

Now that both college and pro football seasons are in full swing, you have your choice of Saturday or Sunday to plan your event. Just keep these tips in mind for a party your friends will cheer about:

Ask guests to come wearing jerseys or their favorite team's colors
Have some fun with your decor; visit your local party supply store for colorful plates, cups, party favors and decorations
Nothing says "tailgating" better than a big pot of chili, and you can choose from hundreds of recipes at FamousChiliRecipes.com. Make sure to set out accoutrements like shredded cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, and crackers.
Arrange furniture so you'll have zones for those who will be watching the game and those who won't
Set up the majority of the food in one location (like your dining room table or even the kitchen), and scatter bowls of snacks around for easy access
Make activities available for non-game-watchers; for example, set out games like Cranium or Jenga

And if a cooler full of beers just isn't your thing, mix up a batch of Big Game Punch to offer your guests a special treat:

2 quarts cranberry juice
1 pound clementines, not peeled, and cut into slices
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
1 quart lemon-lime soda
1 liter spiced rum

In a saucepan, bring the cranberry juice, clementines, cloves, and cinnamon sticks up to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. This will infuse the tangerines and spices into the juice. Chill the infused juice completely.

In a punch bowl, whisk the chilled juice, soda, and rum together. Chill the punch completely before serving. Serve the punch in a pretty punch bowl and ladle into glasses filled with ice. (Source: Food Network)

Fashion Week highlights part III

You didn't actually think our Fashion Week commentary would be complete without checking in on the kids from this season's Project Runway, did you?

We have to admit, many things about this season left us scratching our heads, this more than all others: six designers showing at Bryant Park? The three finalists plus three decoys? Are you kidding me? The show started with 16 contestants ... and nearly a third of them make it to the tents? OK, we'd best not get started down that road. On to the fashions!

For the much-maligned Season 5, we're going to call it a showdown between Portland, OR–based Leanne Marshall and Korto Momolu from Little Rock, AR by way of Liberia. Both ladies have impressed us all season with their innovative uses of fabric, their attention to the tiniest details, and their impeccable tailoring. Since the whole PR show featured 60 looks (10 from each of the—ack— six designers), we're just going to focus on our top two.

Korto Momolu: The designers didn't get many opportunities to send classic eveningwear down the runway this season, and it's a pity, because it's where Korto really shines. We love this jewel green halter gown for its sophisticated, fluid lines and the interesting twist of using beading as part of the halter. Using a satin this shiny is always a risk because the fabric shows every little flaw, but here, there clearly aren't any. Bravo, Korto!

Leanne Marshall: After her distastrous showing in the second episode (and the dress that inspired the Project Rungay boys to dub her "Judy Noodles"), Leanne took off and never looked back; she's the only designer this season to win back-to-back challenges. The look at right perfectly embodies what Leanne does best: bend fabric to her will and let it do the talking. Often teased about her shy, quiet demeanor, Leanne calls herself "the silent fashion assassin"—and this season, she just may eliminate all competitors on sheer talent, proving that nice girls can finish first.

Fashion Week highlights part II

Even thought there was a refreshing shortage of florals at the Spring 2009 shows (As Miranda famously quipped in The Devil Wears Prada, "Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking."), the masters of print patterns still had plenty to work with in adding flair to their already famous silhouettes.

Oscar de la Renta: The mark of a true master is the ability to wow us season after season without sacrificing his point of view, and no one does this better than Oscar. Of course we expect to see classic lines and feminine silhouettes, but this season, he kicked it up a notch (bam!) by using some eye-popping geometrics and, of course, his beloved ikat (a staple in Oscar's collections since Spring 2005). The silver maco bead embroidered strapless gown at right was the final piece of the show—good thing, since it's definitely a show-stopper.

Diane von Furstenberg: No one does prints better than Diane, and her hippie-inspired Spring 2009 line reminds us why she's the reigning queen. The show was awash in colorful patterns from ombrè to wild abstracts in purples, fuschias, oranges, and reds. And as far as we can tell, not a traditional floral in sight. Beautifully tailored and impeccably matched, each look was so expertly crafted that only in retrospect would one ask one's self, "Did she really mix an orange abstract trouser with a fuscia cardigan?"

Sure, Labor Day has come and gone, but the whole "no white after" rule has gone the way of corsets and pantaloons. (No lesser an authority than The Manolo has spoken on the issue many times; need we say more?)

Fashion Week highlights part I

From what we've seen so far, you can forget about dreamy pastels and nap-inducing floral prints in Spring 2009 ... because next season, it's all about color, color, COLOR, baby!

Inspired by artist Bruce Nauman, designer Doo.Ri infused her spring line with bold pops of neon, from shocking pink to out-there aqua. "I was inspired by his work and his use of neon art," she told Fashion Week Daily. "I wanted to inject that through the colors, the fluorescents, on a background of gray."

Anna Sui chose to venture south of the border for her inspiration: pops of color amidst rich earth tones, embroidery, and colorful lace accents. Styled with bold, fun accessories including chunky beaded jewelry, straw hats and bags, and even cowboy boots, her models looked like they'd just returned from spring break in Cancun ... but in a good way.

Even the notoriously restrained Vera Wang couldn't resist getting in on the fun. "I wanted to play," she noted after the show. "There was toughness, but also magic kingdom pale neon colors. It was like being an artist; it's girly with a tough act. That's who I am." And play is exactly what she did, layering sheers over unexpected pieces like leather pants and even having some fun with menswear-inspired jackets and blazers. Nice to see our Vera breaking out of her comfort zone and exploring new territory while still staying true to her aesthetic.

MTV Video Music Awards: worst of the red carpet

There was plenty to love on the red carpet at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards ... but there were a couple who definitely hit a sour note.

Rihanna: If this look were a Project Runway challenge entry, it would evoke a thumb-on-the-chin-finger-on-the-jaw "I just don't get it" from Tim Gunn. The top is just "eh," while the skirt looks like a pile of painted newsprint. Sorry, Ri, we still love you, but it might be time for a little sit-down with your stylist ... if you can, in fact, sit down in this thing.

Katy Perry: "I kissed a girl and I liked it ... so much that I came to the VMAs dressed as an Esther Williams wanna-be." We can understand the overnight sensation's desire to make a splash at her first VMAs, but we wish she hadn't taken it so literally. Not that she doesn't have the bod for it—she definitely does—but there's definitely a "taste factor" at play here. (There we go with the Project Runway buzzphrases again.) Consider your splash made, girlfriend ... and next time, show us some actual style.

MTV Video Music Awards: best of the red carpet

Wow, was it really just a year ago when Britney's abysmal VMA performance had us all in "shock and aww" over how far the pop icon had fallen? Well, last night's awards proved without a doubt that, to paraphrase a recent hit, "Britney's back, bitch." Kudos to La Spears not only for taking home three statues (Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year for "Piece of Me"), but for looking fabulous while she did it. And Britney wasn't alone in her stylish appeal; we'd like to highight our favorite "fashion do's" of the evening.

Ashlee Simpson: If Angelina and Gwen plan on having any more kids, they're going to have to step their maternity style up a notch, because mama-to-be Ashlee S. was looking absolutely divine on last night's red carpet. Her draped jersey gown was mommy-appropriate without looking the least bit sloppy, and her auburn locks and dramatic eye makup were the perfect finishing touch.

Christina Aguilera: After rocking the 40s-pinup-girl look for a couple of years, it's clear that Ms. Aguilera is ready to get in touch with her edgy side again. We love the way the shape and accents of the dress highlight her figure, and she wrapped up the look beautifully with out-to-there eyelashes, pale pink gloss and platinum blond bangs. We can't wait to see what kind of album this reinvention portends!

Miley Cyrus: After seeing her wrapped up in floor-length gowns and slathered with makeup on previous red carpets, it's so refreshing to see this teen queen actually looking like a teen. Her sequined vintage-inspired dress is youthful and fun, and the subtle hair and makeup definitely leave her looking more "Disney Channel" than "Lifetime Channel." Plus, she's clearly having a great time.

Back to school: not just for the kids!

There's just something about this time of year—the first hint of coolness in the air, the reappearance of school busses, the excitement of the first varsity games—that can leave a girl feeling mighty nostalgic for her school days.

We say, "why let kids have all the fun?" There are plenty of ways you can recapture the back-to-school vibe ... minus the braces and the bad skin.

Load up on school supplies. This time of year, stores are chock full of fun notebooks, colored pencils, and even cool paper clips and sticky notes. You need this stuff at work anyway, so why not add a little fun to your desk?
Go back-to-school clothes shopping. Remember that annual trip to the mall to update your wardrobe? Treat yourself to a marathon shopping spree, and when you get home, toss out all the stuff that no longer jazzes you.
Take a course. Almost every university and community college offers non-credit courses on evenings and weekends, covering everything from photography to investing to flamenco dancing. Check out a local catalog and pick out something you always wanted to try. Or if you'd rather go at your own pace, the Web is awash with learning opportunities; check out about.com, where the courses are absolutely free.
Change your hair. No back-to-school experience is complete without a sassy new hairdo to go with the new duds, so book a date with your stylist and consult with her on a new look.

So have some fun and enjoy the season, ladies. And remember, no running in the halls ...

Fall trend alert: plaid

If plaid patterns evoke unpleasant memories of either your own private school experiences or the "naughty coed" craze that accompanied Britney's first video, it's time to put those demons to rest. Because in Fall 2008, plaid is back in a big way—even if your school uniform days are long behind you.

From cozy wool jumpers to funky tights to handbags and shoes (like these über-cute wedges from Volatile), plaid will be showing up everywhere you look this season. And not just in the traditional grays and beiges either—look for funky combinations featuring swaths of purple, orange, yellow, electric blue, and neon red.

We've gotta say, after being inundated with florals several seasons in a row, it's quite a refreshing change.

Oh, and if you've been thinking about talking your man into wearing a kilt, now's definitely the time.

As the summer of 2008 winds to a close, our fave TV shows are beginning to peek over the horizon ... along with some fab new amusements we haven't met yet. Put the two together, and you've got one of the most fabulous Fall TV seasons ever.

Project Runway Season 5 (now showing, Bravo, Wednesdays 9 pm ET): After a mere 6-month hiatus, one of our favorite shows is back for a last Bravo hurrah before it makes the move to Lifetime. Unlike Season 4, the current competition boasts a plethora of strong (and occasionally annoying) personalities, including leather-loving rock-n-roll queen Stella, blue-faux-hawked Suede, and urban-with-a-capital-U wizardress Terri. Best line of the season so far: "It looks like a pterodactyl out of a gay Jurassic Park" (Tim Gunn, on Blayne's drag queen outfit from Episode 5).

Glam God (now showing, VH1, Thursdays 10 pm ET): What Project Runway does for—or to—designers, Glam God does for/to would-be Hollywood wardrobe stylists. Each episode presents an individual or team challenge such as "your client is wearing the same LBD as four other actresses; make her stand out on the red carpet" or "give an upcoming young actress a leading-lady look."

America's Next Top Model Cycle 11 (Sept. 3, CW): Wow, it feels like we were just getting over our post-Whitney-win euphoria when here it comes again! Get ready to meet 14 new hopefuls (including the show's first-ever transgender contestant) who will pout, strut, and pose their way through challenge after challenge in hopes of becoming America's Next Top Model. The tagline that calls out from the hippie-themed ads is "Feel the Love," and we're sure everyone will ... at least until the first catfight.

The Rachel Zoe Project (Sept. 8, Bravo): Speaking of stylists, meet the one who elevated the occupation to celebrity status: Rachel Zoe, who has styled A-listers from Cameron Diaz to Keira Knightley. (And whom, on a more controversial note, many blame for Hollywood's current obsession with ultra-thinness.) The series will follow La Zoe and her inner circle as they endeavor to take her business to the next level.

Stylista (Oct. 22, CW): Ever wonder what would happen if Project Runway and America's Next Top Model had a baby, with a little Devil Wears Prada thrown into the gene pool? The result would be something like Stylista, a new series that pits 11 "fashion enthusiasts" against each other in the quest to become assistant to Anne Slowey, Fashion News Director for Elle magazine.

Wow, we're exhausted just from doing the rundown! If you haven't already, clear out your TiVo, dig up your recipe for TV-night cosmos and get your girlfriends on deck for some serious drama, reality-show style!

We haven't done much—well, OK, any—blogging about Season 2 of Bravo's Shear Genius, but it was a terrific warm-up for Season 5 of Project Runway, and the stepped-up challenges (Cut hair blindfolded? Uh-huh.) kept us engaged all the way to the end.

And in the end, it was feisty Latina Dee who took home the grand prize: $100,000 in seed money from Nexxus and a chance to style hair for an Allure magazine feature. Kudos to the Miami native for staying true to her aesthetic, showing versatility and good client management ... and for promising to share the grand prize with her mama. (The latter had no bearing on her win, but we thought it was sweet.)

So we extend our congratulations to Dee for showing us her "shear genius" ... and our best wishes for her continued success. Bring on Season 3!

"Mom" brings home the metal

A few weeks ago we giddily reported that 41-year-old Dara Torres had qualified for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team through a performance at trials that could only be called phenomenal.

We promised ourselves that we'd follow her Olympic story down to the minute, and then, well, something happened.

Okay, golden boy Michael Phelps happened.

And while Mr. Phelps ... uh, can we have a moment, please? ... mmmm, Michael Phelps ... okay, we're back ...

Anyway, while Mr. Phelps was racking up gold after gold, our Dara was quietly gathering some hardware of her own: three silvers, to be exact. One of them was for the 50-meter freestyle, which she lost to a 25-year-old by 0.01 seconds.

Although the top prize eluded her this time around, we think that's pretty darned impressive for a fortysomething dynamo whose teammates took to calling her "mom."

So, good on you, girl! See you in 2012?

Yes, the Material Mom turns the big 5-0 today, and what an amazing half-century it's been for one of the biggest pop icons ever.

Let's not forget that when we first met the feisty Bay City, MI, native, it was 1982. To put that into perspective:

Cell phones were the size of Cadillacs
The Soviet Union was at the height of its power
Michael Jackson's Thriller was just being released
We were taking our fashion cues from Flashdance, Dallas and Dynasty

We could go on and on, but you get the point. Trends have come and gone, but Madonna has managed to hold our fascination for over 25 years, with no end in sight.

Each week, the site will put 25 potential "fashion moments" up for your consideration. You can vote once a day, and each time you'll earn a chance at a $2,500 designer handbag, a $1,000 AmEx gift card and an Apple iPod Touch.

Every Monday, you'll get to see the previous week's top vote-getters. Then, beginning August 25, the most popular 15 will compete to be named Fashion's Defining Moment, which will be revealed on September 2.

Movie buzz: Bottle Shock

Usually our movie radar is calibrated to scope out chick flicks, but there's one little not-quite-chicky film on the horizon that we simply can't wait to check out.

It's Bottle Shock, an indy flick that chronicles the true story leading up to the historical 1976 Paris wine tasting, where a small California winery shocked the world by beating France's best contenders. Alan Rickman stars as an ultimate European wine-snob (perfect casting, anyone?) who ventures to Napa Valley to see what all the fuss is about. Of course, back in the '70s, the average "tasting room" was usually a trailer, and the best chardonnays were often served in smoky neighborhood bars. You get the idea.

Filling out the cast are Bill Pullman, the always fabulous Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and the adorable Freddy Rodriguez (Ugly Betty). The film earned rave reviews when it premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and will be opening in limited release on August 8.
