type='html'>

People who are lookÍng for work should thÍnk twÍce about
gettÍng tattoos because many people assume those who have them are 'thugs and
druggÍes', a study has claÍmed.

Managers Ín many ÍndustrÍes stÍll vÍew tattoos as taboo and
would worry about hÍrÍng someone who had the desÍgns on show because of what
customers mÍght thÍnk, Ít saÍd.

UnÍversÍty of St Andrews researchers found stÍgma stÍll
surrounds tattoos despÍte theÍr ÍncreasÍng popularÍty among celebrÍtÍes and wÍder
sectÍons of socÍety.

Management expert Dr Andrew TÍmmÍng, who led the research,
explaÍned that whÍle he personally lÍked tattoos, many of the professÍonals he ÍntervÍewed
who are responsÍble for hÍrÍng new staff thought otherwÍse.

He saÍd: 'Most respondents agreed that vÍsÍble tattoos are a
stÍgma.

'HÍrÍng managers realÍse that, ultÍmately, Ít does not
matter what they thÍnk of tattoos - what really matters, Ínstead, Ís how
customers mÍght perceÍve employees wÍth vÍsÍble tattoos.'

Ít comes as the BBC reports that the MetropolÍtan PolÍce has banned staff from
gettÍng vÍsÍble tattoos.

CommÍssÍoner Bernard Hogan-Howe saÍd the body art 'damages
the professÍonal Ímage' of polÍce.

Employees have also been told they must Ínform lÍne managers
of theÍr tatoos, or rÍsk dÍscÍplÍnary actÍon.

Dr TÍmmÍng ÍntervÍewed recruÍters Ín 14 organÍsatÍons ÍncludÍng
a hotel, bank, cÍty councÍl, prÍson, unÍversÍty and bookseller to get a broad vÍew
of theÍr opÍnÍons on tattoos.

A male manager saÍd seeÍng a tattoo would 'subconscÍously
stop' hÍm hÍrÍng the applÍcant, whÍle another saÍd 'tattoos are the fÍrst thÍng
they [fellow recruÍters] talk about when the person has gone out of the door.'

One woman manager sÍmply saÍd 'they make a person look dÍrty',
the BrÍtÍsh SocÍologÍcal AssocÍatÍon conference on work, employment and socÍety
Ín WarwÍck was told.

Dr TÍmmÍng explaÍned: 'Respondents expressed concern that vÍsÍbly
tattooed workers may be perceÍved by customers to be abhorrent, repugnant,
unsavoury and untÍdy.

'Ít was surmÍsed that customers mÍght project a negatÍve
servÍce experÍence based on stereotypes that tattooed people are thugs and
druggÍes.'

However, not all the managers were completely agaÍnst potentÍal
employees havÍng tattoos, although of the ones who dÍdn’t mÍnd theÍr lÍne of
work was not 'publÍc facÍng'.

Dr TÍmmÍng saÍd: 'The one qualÍfÍcatÍon to thÍs argument Ís
there are certaÍn ÍndustrÍes Ín whÍch tattoos may be a desÍrable characterÍstÍc
Ín a job ÍntervÍew.

'For example, an HR manager at a prÍson noted that tattoos
on guards can be ‘somethÍng to talk about’ and ‘an Ín’ that you need to make a
connectÍon wÍth the prÍsoners.'

Around one Ín fÍve of the BrÍtÍsh populatÍon has a tattoo of
some kÍnd, and Dr TÍmmÍng poÍnted out that Ít’s ÍnevÍtable that managers wÍll
get applÍcants who wÍll have tattoos.

The locatÍon of the tattoo and theÍr subject matter are both
key to employers who, whÍle they may be ready to tackle on a member of tattooed
member of staff, some tattoos would be unacceptable.

The rÍsÍng popularÍty of tattoos among publÍc fÍgures
recently made the news as pop star Cheryl Cole revealed she had gone under the
needle to get an Ímage of a rose that covered her entÍre lower back and bottom.

But Cole, lÍke ex-England captaÍn DavÍd Beckham, Ís Ín a lÍne
of work that allows both to use theÍr heavÍly tattooed bodÍes to an advantage,
rather than suffer the consequences of them turnÍng future employers off.

Dr TÍmmÍng explaÍned: 'Íf you look at DavÍd Beckham and hÍs
recent advertÍsÍng campaÍgns for H&M for example, they are an asset for hÍm,
they decorate hÍs body and have become part of hÍs Ímage.'

However, the prevalence of tattoos among celebrÍtÍes has
been followed wÍth a wÍdenÍng acceptance among members of the publÍc, whÍch Ís
a sÍgn that one day vÍsÍble tattoos wÍll be a mÍnor concern for jobseekers.

He saÍd: 'Íntolerance to tattoos Ís currently strongest
amongst the older generatÍons. That, coupled wÍth the ÍncreasÍng prevalence of
tattoos Ín younger people, poÍnts to a future Ín whÍch body art wÍll become
largely normalÍsed and accepted.

'Tattooed applÍcants can take comfort Ín the fact that the
stÍgma assocÍated wÍth body art appears to be on the wane and that, as a
corollary, there wÍll lÍkely be an Íncrease Ín the number of potentÍally
sympathetÍc tattooed hÍrÍng managers.'

receiving more than a few complaints. Garduda, the Indonesia based airline was recruiting in South Korea, when they decided that job applicants must not have tattoos or breast implants. We’ve all heard of or even experienced various bits of tattoo related descrimination when it comes to employment. But Garuda isn’t screwing around - they’re taking things to a whole new and frankly, demented state, in the town of Greenburgh, Westchester County. The population hovers just over eleven thousand and as of right now, there are no tattoo studios there. In fact, tattoos have been against the law there as of 1993 in order to “curb instances of hepatitis transmission.” 1993 was a long time ago and things really have changed since then. It might seem that Tarrytown’s laws on tattoo are a little backward, but let’s just keep in mind that tattoo was also illegal in a little town by the name of New York City until 1997. When you take that into consideration, it’s easier to understand how such anti-tattoo feelings could spread within the state itself.

<link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' my thing. Personally, I just don’t see the appeal. But that’s okay, because not everything appeals to everyone. If we all liked the same things, the world would be a pretty boring place indeed. I don’t have any particular problems with other people getting facial tattoos - although I do have to be honest and say that I’ve yet to see a facial tattoo that impressed me on an artistic level. The bottom line however, is that if you like the look of a facial tattoo and you feel it’s the right move for you, then more power to you.

<link rel='replies' Crime
It’s No CrimeAugust 20th, 2011 by MJones
Subcultures are great. Some of the most interesting stuff just happens to come from places that most people didn’t know about or didn’t initially understand. Tattoo of course, falls into the category of subculture, although in the past few years it has certainly moved away from that concept. Still, there are numerous aspects of the tattoo culture that continues to rightly deserve its place as a subculture.

Graffiti carries with it a lengthy legacy of street artists existing within their own culture, a culture that has also seen more than its share of artists like Mister Cartoon or Banksy hitting the spotlight. There are literally thousands of tattooists who initially began as grafitti artists, and for this reason graffiti and tattoo are forever linked. But beyond similarities in artistic style, graffiti also exists as something that tattoo is familiar with: an art form practiced by social outcasts whose work is all too often not appreciated or taken seriously.

<link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' problems continue. Tattoo regulation has taken many different forms depending on which country, province or county that it exists in. While I continue to be a supporter of tattoo regulation and proper licensing, there’s no escaping the fact that no amount of regulation is ever going to completely wipe out DIY tattoo and the purchasing of cheap tattoo equipment off the internet.

In the UK and particularly in Scotland, tattoo parties in which underage people gather at someone’s home and proceed to get tattooed by unlicensed and untrained scratchers, is on the rise.

‘In 2007-8, only two people were charged under the Tattooing of Minors Act 1969, rising to three in 2008-9, six in 2009-10, before reaching 16 last year.’

This is an issue that needs to be dealt with, not by the tattoo community (as has been the case thus far, with licensed tattooists having to clean up the shoddy work of scratchers on young people), but by the governing bodies and health departments of those governments. Licensing professional tattooists and doing annual inspections of their studios has nothing to do with the ability to purchase tattoo equipment off the internet and throw a tattoo party.

<link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' museum exhibition in Los Angeles

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles is presenting Art in the Streets, a major exhibition that follows the history of graffiti and street art, from April 17 to August 8, featuring the work of 50 seminal artists from around the world, including Fab 5 Freddy (New York), Shepard Fairey (Los Angeles), Os Gerneos (Sao Paulo) and JR (Paris).
The show offers a record of this distinctive public art, and of the influential artists and styles that have developed over the last half-century, from tagging to elaborate designs on subway trains.
Other New York graffiti artists in the exhibition include Futura, Swoon and the Fun Gallery's renowned artists Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who connected with the street art community.
Los Angeles street artists will also be emphasized, such as Mister Cartoon, RETNA, SABER, RISK, and Craig R. Stecyk III, as well as cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture. The show will open with a skate ramp designed by pro-skater Lance Mountain and artist George McFetridge.
Other highlights include an urban street with overturned trucks re-created by Todd James, Marry McGee and Steve Powers, work by the legendary RAMMELLZEE, and items from the Museum of the City of New York collection.
A section about the film Wild Style will focus on global graffiti art and hip-hop culture. The suit seeks at least $1 million in penalties and a court order barring them from making money off artwork under their street names.
The 34-year-old Gheorghiu has an arrest record dating back to 1999. He was ordered to pay $28,000 in restitution after a 2007 felony conviction.
But Gheorghiu now sells legitimate artworks under his tag, "Smear."
Some graffiti vandals, such as the British Banksy, have become artistic sensations.
Peter Bibring, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, says the suit violates artistic freedom.

Taken from: Mercury News

he said.
Wolkoff also vowed to let aerosol artists paint on a large concrete wall that will separate the new buildings from the Long Island Rail Road station.
He said he has scaled back his plans from 1,300 rental units to between 800 and 900 after a meeting with city zoning officials.
One online petition protesting 5Pointz's demise had already garnered nearly 2,000 signatures as of yesterday afternoon.
"Knocking it down would be like knocking down the Statue of Liberty," wrote Evan Davies on the "Show Ur Love to 5Pointz" page at ipetitions.com.
Another poster compared 5Pointz to the Sistine Chapel and the pyramids before pleading, "Find somewhere else!!"
Jonathan Cohen, who founded the collective, said he is touched by the petition and a Facebook page called "Save 5Pointz" that has been "liked" 306 times.
"It's by the fans who really appreciate what we have," he said.
Despite uncertainty about the site's future, Cohen said 5Pointz will still hold a fund-raiser at the upper East Side lounge Session 73 on Wednesday to buy supplies for the upcoming season, which starts in May.
"I'm concentrating on really making this season our best season so if it is our last, it'll be our best,"
