When Mercedes-Benz sets out to make a new S-Class, the brief is to make the best car in the world. While it might not visually seduce like a Jaguar XJ, the big Merc offers an ownership experience that should be even more appealing.

This car does what it’s supposed to do superbly and is functionally exceptional. It was conceived as a long-wheelbase saloon, giving it unprecedented torsional rigidity.The ride is helped by standard air suspension with adaptive dampers.

There’s a choice of four petrol and two diesel engines, with a nine-speed automatic ‘box standard equipment. An advanced 48v hybrid electric powertrain technology used to boost both performance and efficiency in some derivates, while the plug-in hybrid S560e will be the default choice in the range for anyone liable to pay benefit-in-kind tax (it attracts less than half as much BIK tax as any of the other derivative). For those who don't care a bit about such things, meanwhile, there's always the 600-horsepower S63.

The S-Class is engineered to operate quietly and comfortably at all times. On both town roads and motorway it could hardly ride better, and it steers directly and precisely, with luxury-appropriate isolation.

Toyota Yaris was one of the most anticipated cars in Pakistan before its launch in March this year. Toyota Yaris has replaced the 1300cc variants, XLi and GLi of Corolla lineup. This is a compact sedan that is set to rival Honda City. Toyota Yaris comes in both 1300cc and 1500cc engine options,just like Honda City. It was launched with a total of six variants in Pakistan and in six different exterior colors.

Exterior

Toyota Yaris comes with LED Daytime Running Lights and halogen headlamps. This variant also has fog lamps integrated into the front bumper. The front grille of this car is very wide and is designed with many horizontal bars. The ATIV X variant comes with 15-inch allow rims and tires. On the sides of the car, the door has pronounced cuts and design lines that help in dealing with air resistance. These design lines also give a sporty look to the car. Side mirrors are body-colored, and door handles are given in chrome finish.Side mirrors also have integrated turn signals in them. The taillamps have LED bar lights that are bright and look elegant in the car. At the rear, you can also find reflectors integrated into the bumper ,high-mounted brake lamp, and an antenna on the roof of the car.

Rear chrome garnish and an acoustic laminated green windshield are also provided in this variant. The front grille also has a partial chrome plating to give it a premium look.

Interior

Toyota Yaris ATIV X comes with an auto airconditioning unit and a 4.2-inch colored TFT multi-information display. Push-start and a smart key with a remote trunk opener are given. There is a 3-spoke tilt power steering with MID, audio, and Bluetooth switches. Seat upholstery is a comfortable premium ivory fabric with stitch design. There is an in-dash infotainment system with a 6.8-inch capacitive touch screen.

The infotainment system has Bluetooth, MP3, DVD/VCD, USB, mirror link, radio, and AUX Connectivity. The inside door handles are also made out of chrome. Sunvisors with vanity mirrors are provided for both the front passenger and the driver. Storage spaces in the car are ample with cupholders and bottleholders.

The interior color scheme is a mixture of black and beige. The quality of the dashboard is good, with silver trim pieces around the center part.

Other interior features include power windows, rear camera, six speakers, 12 V front power outlet, digital clock, two rear power outlets, center console box, central door locking, footrest, and floor mats. This variant also comes with an advanced Optitron speedometer, tachometer, and economy meter.

A keyless entry feature is also provided, which makes getting into the car an easier task. The trunk space in this car is 476 liters, and it can fit two large suitcases easily. You can also find a spare wheel in the boot. The headroom and legroom are both sufficient at the front and at the rear. The floor at the rear is flat, which makes it easier for the third person to sit.

Engine and Performance

Toyota Yaris comes with an in-line 4-cylinder 16-Valve DOHC dual VVT-i engine. Since this is an ATIV X variant, it comes with a 1500cc engine. This sedan gives 16 to 17 km/l of fuel average. As far as transmission is concerned, you can opt for either a 7-speed Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT ) or 5-speed manual transmission. The engine in ATIV X produces 106bhp and 140Nm of torque. This variant also has eco and sports mode. Triptronic feature is provided that allows you to drive the car either in auto or manual mode.

Safety

Safety features include SRS airbags for the driver and the front passenger, a hill-start assist system, vehicle stability control, seatbelts for five passengers, ISOFIX child seat anchors, immobilizer, key reminder warning, light reminder warning, and fuel auto cut features. Anti-Lock Braking System , Brake Assist , and traction control features are also provided.

2012 Acura MDX review notes

I was impressed with the six-cylinder engine. It didn’t strike me until I merged a few lanes over and jabbed the throttle, producing a pleasing sound and decent acceleration as I trailed in the wake of a Chevy Camaro convertible. I played with the paddles a bit, too. They were fun, amusing for a good-sized crossover, but not exactly Formula One-inspired. They’re just something to spice up the drive into work and summon the revs a bit more purposefully on the expressway.

The cabin of the MDX is impressive in appearance and execution. This sampler came in stately black inside, and the steering wheel and door panels were smart. The atmosphere was quiet and serene, with just a bit of wind and exterior noise getting in. The negative? I’m not a fan of the center stack, which has way too many buttons and is confusing. It’s hard to get used to in a short period and not easy to operate at a glance. MIT-inspired controls are not my preference at expressway speeds.

I may be the only journalist in America who actually likes the big, bold grille. Perhaps that’s because I like 1940s and ’50s trains, and that’s what the front end of this crossover looks like to me. The side panels are clean and crisp, and with the big wheels, it cuts an impressive silhouette. It’s decent crossover.

ASSOCIATE EDITOR DAVID ARNOUTS: Despite having the controversial “power plenum” Acura beak/grille, the exterior of this SUV looks more buttoned together and blended into a cohesive element than the last MDX we had in here.

Inside the ute, things are congruent with the exterior appearance. The LED lighting illuminates the black interior nicely without showing too many flaws, as abundant light tends to do. I was surprised it had three rows of seating. I would think Acura might be better off selling it as two rows with ample storage space than trying to kid people about being able to haul six or seven people. I suppose you could if they were small enough though.

As Greg pointed out, the center stack is a bit overwhelming and isn’t something you can jump right into unless you are familiar with the Acura brand. There are too many buttons in places you wouldn’t expect them.

Power was decent and provided more than enough to handle the daily commute with a mix of highway and city driving. The all-wheel drive is not a noticeable feature but would be a great thing to have when the snow flies here in Michigan.

This, like many other SUVs and crossovers, has a sport mode with paddle-shifters, which I find quite funny. There is no need for a sport mode in this vehicle. Seriously. You are only kidding yourself. If you want something sporty, buy an Italian sports car to try and impressive the blonde at the red light, not the more than two-ton crossover SUV with the beak grille.

Regardless, it’s a well-enough ute that has good marks all around.

SENIOR ONLINE EDITOR RORY CARROLL: Hmm. The interior of the Acura MDX is very well put together and comfortable. As mentioned, the center stack is a little cluttered, but the navigation system and the Bluetooth functions were unusually easy to use.

Like every car in this segment, power was adequate and the handling well suited to everyday highway cruising and running around town. The paddle shifters are more than a little ridiculous.

Aside from the beak, the styling is taut, if somewhat unremarkable.

ROAD TEST EDITOR JONATHAN WONG: Even with a new MDX expected to appear sometime next year, the current model is still my favorite three-row SUV. With our 2008 MDX long-termer, we piled more than 30,000 miles onto it, it never missed a day of service because of mechanical issue and the cabin held up remarkably well.

I continue to believe that this V6 and six-speed automatic transmission combination is one of (if not the) smoothest drivetrain combination in the SUV class. When you light-foot it around town, it’s quiet, with the transmission performing seamless shifts. And like Greg mentioned, it has a surprisingly nice exhaust note during wide-open throttle to unleash decent power for merging onto the expressway and passing slower traffic.

The magnetic suspension is cushy in comfort mode for a soft ride around town and more roll around corners, but tightens in sport mode. Of course, a high-riding 4,600-pound vehicle isn’t going to take a corner like a sports car, but all things considered, it can round an expressway entrance ramp quite well. Steering has some weight tuned and responds well to inputs. Brakes feature good bite and slow things down without drama.

I suppose the best compliment you can give a large vehicle is that it drives smaller than it is. Maneuvering around parking lots is done with ease, and the backup camera is handy. I also think Acura’s blind-spot warning displays are the best in the business, with the warning inside the cabin instead of outside on the mirror itself or on the side of the mirror housing like Audi’s is.

Complaints about the MDX’s button-laden center stack are expected, but I prefer buttons over having the majority of functions being controlled by an iDrive-like knob. It’s kind of like your home entertainment remote control that has a billion buttons on it, but you eventually get used to it and pick up on how to control the cable box, DVR, DVD player, speaker system and TV. It’s the same thing with the MDX’s center stack—you’ll get acclimated to it and will be a pro at working through it before long.

The rest of the interior is nice, with quality materials, good-looking wood trim, soft leathers and one of the most comfortable front bucket seats you’ll find in a luxury SUV.

As for complaints, I do have one. The navigation map in Acura vehicles is really outdated. While Audi has Google Maps images, Acura is still slogging along with the same beige background image that’s in the Wong family’s 2004 MDX. Kind of disappointing, but I’m sure updates are in the works--at least I hope they are.

Bentley Unveils World’s Most Luxurious Charity Bus

A former London Routemaster bus, which has been luxuriously restored by Bentley Motors, has today been handed over to the hospice St Luke’s.
St Luke’s, who are based in Winsford, Cheshire, secured the double-decker bus earlier this year and appealed to the luxury car manufacturer Bentley for help in its restoration. Bentley Motors has supported the hospice for the past three years, most recently in April when it helped renovate one of the hospice’s charity shops and rejuvenated the hospice garden during a production shutdown at its Crewe factory.
This latest project has taken 2000 hours to complete with 59 Bentley workers involved The team has sought to retain many of the original features of the bus but adapt it to the needs of St Luke’s in a typical Bentley way.
This has meant using the leather for which Bentley cars are synonymous throughout, all hand stitched with the St Luke’s and Bentley logos. Other skilled craftsmen from Bentley’s woodshop, toolroom and maintenance departments developed bespoke work surfaces, rails, kitchen unit and shelves to help St Luke’s staff in their public awareness and fundraising activities.
The craftsmen are particularly proud of the “used ticket” bin, a feature at the exit of all Routemaster buses which has now been converted into a donation tin.
The Bentley production manager in charge of the project, Gary Lazenby, said: “This has been a real labour of love for all those involved. Bentley staff are incredibly proud of the cars we produce but applying those skills to a bus was a totally new experience for all. We are very grateful to the many local suppliers who provided materials free of charge to help make this iconic vehicle fit for a new lease of life.”
The bus, named Luke, will be used as a travelling shop for colleges and universities as well as an education and awareness base to visit schools and other events.
There will also be an on-board charity shop to help the hospice raise funds while on the road.
St Luke’s corporate fundraiser Karen Burns said: “Bentley’s support has been invaluable to us over the past three years and we are astounded by our new community bus.
“This is a world-first, a community charity bus finished to Bentley standard, with plush leather interiors and Bentley wings on show to promote our relationship with the organisation.
“As a charity, we could only dream about Luke undergoing such a transformation. What we have is not only unique but is also a practical tool for us to share the St Luke’s story.”
Doug Dickson, board member for manufacturing at Bentley Motors said: “Many of our associates have accrued time as the global downturn forced us to reduce production and shutdown for a number of weeks earlier this year
“We offered the team the opportunity to use some of their downtime to help the hospice and were overwhelmed with the response. Rather than stay at home, so many skilled Bentley team members volunteered to help St Luke’s. The result is a vehicle which combines the best of British luxury craftsmanship and manufacturing skill within an historic vehicle which is a symbol of British transport. We hope it helps make a difference here, in our local community.

Frankfurt Show is well and truly over, but we find ourselves with a lot unpublished material that we are sure, as car fans, you’ll want to see. So read on! Firstly on on the Mansory stand, there’s a pink, totally outrageous, modified Bentley coupe. Just why would you want to do this to a beautiful car, even if you have way too much money?! Answer: you wouldn’t but it sure gets some attention. Maybe we looked at the other stars on their stand as a resultf you thought carbon fibre-everywhere was yesterday’s theme, then look further along their stand where an Aston and a Bugatti lurk in proud assertion of the breed. At least the dark weave of the carbon cloth gives an unexpected understatement to the conversions. Naturally there are deep performance tweaks to supplement the cult clothing. But this is a fashion show…and bespoke clothing doesn’t come cheapMansory’s carbon and chrome Bugatti Veyron, by contrast is pretty tasteful. Veyron’s are not subtle, and plenty of factory cars look more outrageous than this example. We’ll take this one and leave the matt pink Bentley thanks.

After Tech art revealed their customization package for the new penamera, is time to move our attention to Lumma Design, who revealed today the first details on their tuning program for the luxury sedan.

But compared to the German tuner, Lumma Design is coming with an aggressive wide body kit with fender extensions, side skirts, new hood with air outlets, new bumpers, new rear wing and rear diffuser with quad exhaust pipes. And all that is crowned by 22-inch lightweight alloy wheels.

Further more, the ride height has been lowered by 35mm and the engine will be tuned to deliver around 700 hp.

Student designed Mazda Yuuga Coupe features no smiley face

The jury is largely in on Mazda's new happy Corporate face and well, most folks don't like it. But what if Mazda designed a car featuring its Nagare design language minus the smiley face? That's exactly what one student designer named Imran Ali did with the Yuuga Coupe. Presented at the 2009 Degree Show at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, UK, we have to say that the Yugga Coupe is quite the looker. No known plans exist for production. For all anyone knows, this could be a Mazda6 coupe. Or, the Yuuga could indicate a design direction for future RX models – like a return to the gone-but-totally-not-forgotten RX-7. Or hey, it could be something totally different – who knows? The all-glass roof and crash-cymbal sized brakes are obviously auto show wishful thinking, yet the side profile is quite modern and Fisker-like. The rear looks even better – sorta like an Aston Martin V8. Then, of course, there's the Mazda meets GT-R front end, which is especially handsome. Good work, Mr. Ali. We hope they build it, though the name has to go. Too close to Yugo for our liking.

The Escalade’s two-mode hybrid system allows it to return exceptional fuel economy, while delivering the capabilities of a true luxury SUV. The limited-edition Escalade Platinum model includes other advanced technologies, such as light-emitting diode (LED) headlamps and Cadillac’s advanced Magnetic Ride Control system.
Escalade Platinum Hybrid is available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. It delivers up to 5,800 pounds (2,631 kg) of usable towing capacity on 2WD models and 5,600 pounds (2,540 kg) on 4WD models.
GM’s patented two-mode hybrid technology
GM’s patented two-mode hybrid system consists of an advanced electrically variable transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). These systems work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 Gen IV gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late-intake valve closing (LIVC) technology.
The key to Escalade’s two-mode hybrid system is that the electric power used to propel the vehicle is generated by the hybrid system itself. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is used to move the vehicle and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed.
Providing power to the hybrid’s electrically variable transmission’s (EVT) two electric motors is a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). This battery pack is located under the second-row seat, where it takes up virtually no additional space and does not interfere with second- or third-row ingress/egress.
Additional features of the hybrid powertrain and supporting systems include:

Guess what; the Timex is still a-ticking as there’s still no sign of the car. Maybe 2008, we’ve heard. Or maybe not. So the current GranSport stays on lifesupport for at least another year. Bring out the defibrillator, Ethel. But if you’re looking for something different from the usual Merc SL, Porsche 911, Jaguar XK, the latest GranSport coupe oozes Italian passione. It’s powered by a 4.2-liter 32-valve V-8, massaged by parent company Ferrari and coupled to a six-speed Cambiocorsa clutchless transmission. Tighter suspension and a half-inch lower ride height sharpen the handling a notch, compared to the regular GT Coupe. And it looks very gran sporty with its deep front and rear spoilers, rear diffuser, modified rockers, and very funky leather and carbon- fiber interior. But still, bring on the new GT.

The new Maserati GranTurismo MC is an offshoot of the Maserati GranTurismo MC Concept introduced last September in Monza and based on the Maserati GranTurismo S road version, with electro-actuated gearbox system.
A limited series of the Maserati GranTurismo MC produced for gentlemen drivers who wish to race in the 2010 GT4 European Cup and the national series, will be on sale as of October 2009. The indicative price is 135,000 Euro + VAT. The cars will be sold directly through Maserati Corse.
In 2010 Maserati intends to once again organize a European single-make cup race. The cars participating in this Cup shall naturally present specifications that will set them apart from the GT4-version Maserati GranTurismo MCs.
Maserati chose to create a model with GT4 features because GT4 is the category with the closest links to production models. There is a niche of GranTurismo road car owners who love racing and want to be able to test their mettle on a track driving a racing version of the same model they own.
The Maserati GranTurismo MC is the result of a development work carried out during many test sessions that started in the Summer of 2008.
Various drivers have taken turns developing the Maserati GranTurismo MC Concept from which the Maserati GranTurismo MC stemmed. With their strong professional and racing background, each and every one of them contributed to the creation of the final version.
With the creation of the Maserati GranTurismo MC, the tradition of the Trident logo car manufacturer who remains loyal to its origins lives on. Novitec is one of the few tuners that have stepped up to bat to modify the Maserati line, with its Novitec Tridente group working hard to obtain the best performance out of the luxury and sporty sedans and coupes. Its latest creation is a package for the Maserati GranTurismo that brings power up to a stunning 600 hp via a supercharger, reworked ECU, and free-flowing exhaust. It’s taken awhile, but Maserati’s big, four-door Quattroporte has finally blossomed into the magnifico ultra-luxury sedan it always deserved to be. So much so that the latest Quattroporte S, due on the streets early November 2008, comes close to such sedan superstars as Bentley’s Flying Spur and Merc’s S600 in terms of hedonistic luxury coupled with driver gratification. Distinguished by its vertical chrome grille louvers, which connect it visually to the new GranTurismo, the new S comes with an uprated version of the Ferrari-derived V-8. Capacity goes up from 4.2 to 4.7 liters, with a power hike from 400 hp to 425. Floor the throttle, listen to the baritone crescendo as the revs soar, and sit back in wonderment as this 4,400-pound piece of rolling sculpture rushes to 60 mph in a smidge longer than five seconds. Bigger front rotors and larger 19-inch Pirellis add to the driving delights, as does the all-new Bose multimedia/nav system.
