Myra Foundation awards $241,000 in local grants
The Myra Foundation recently awarded more than $241,000 in grants and donations to regional organizations. The foundation was established in 1941 by John E. Myra of Emerado, N.D., and was the first private foundation of its kind organized in the state. It has contributed $6.6 million to charitable organizations and education programs in Grand Forks County.
N.D. traffic deaths up in 2009
Five motorists were killed in Grand Forks County in 2009, according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation, the same number as in 2008.
Goettle might run for Congress
North Dakota Commerce Commissioner Shane Goettle is considering a run at national office, he told the Herald editorial board in a visit Thursday. His boss, Republican Gov. John Hoeven, is also mulling a run at the U.S. Senate following an announcement by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., that he would not seek another term in November.

Minneapolis SWAT officer charged with bank robbery
A Minneapolis police SWAT team member was charged Thursday in the takeover-style robbery of a suburban bank, and authorities said he confessed to several other armed robberies in the Twin Cities area. Timothy Edward Carson, 28, Rosemount, Minn., was ordered held without bail during a brief federal court hearing.
