Evelyn Alice Pereboom, the teacher in back of the picture - became the wife of Alvin Brunken, my mother's brother.

Story

Evelyn obtained her Teachers Certificate to teach any grade from the first to the 8th on the eleventh of July 1932[2].

Pleasant Valley was the first teaching position that Evelyn had. She shared the following newspaper clipping with me to describe what it was like to be a teacher when she began teaching.

Evelyn went on to teach at other schools. In Evelyn's obituary, it was noted that "After graduation she taught in several one-room schools in north central Oklahoma including Turkey Creek School west of Enid, which was moved to the grounds of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center in Enid as a permanent part of that facility. In the spring of 2011, at the grand opening of the Center's new museum building, Evelyn was honored as the oldest living Turkey Creek teacher." [3]

Was there more than one school named Pleasant Valley in the vicinity of Lahoma, Oklahoma? I raise the question because Hilda Brunken and Harold Brunken were attending a Pleasant Valley school in 1922 - See post Pleasant Valley School - 1922. And, Mildred Brunken completed her eighth grade from Pleasant Valley Public Schools in 1934.

Deitrich Brunken married Theresa (Maxant) Weiss December 20, 1904 at age 63, in Columbus, Platte, Nebraska, USA. Their children were: Olga Nelson (1905 - 1989) Walter (1907 - 1998). After Deitrich Brunken died in 1919, Theresa married John Chambre in 1935.

Therese had two children by a previous marriage, Gustave G. Weiss and William M. Weiss. Gustav died young from a shooting accident:

Gerd Deidrich Brunken, brother of Johann Diedrich "John" Brunken and uncle of my grandfather, William Leopold Brunken. He preferred to be called Diedrich.

Story

Portrait of Gerd Diedrich Brunken who was born 15 Jan 1841 in Westerstede, Oldenburg, Germany. When Gerd Diedrich Brunken was born, his father, Gerhard, was 25 and his mother, Willima, was 24[2].

Diedrich was the first of three brothers (Diedrich, Johann "John" and Friedrick) who came from Germany to Nebraska. He arrived in Nebraska in 1868 at the age of 27.

He applied for citizenship on January 16, 1872 and became a citizen of the United States of America on April 16, 1877.

He received a homestead patent for his farm February 20, 1880

He married Gesche Sophie Meilahn (1846 - 1901) in Platte County, Nebraska on 8 Jun 1874 at the age of 33 and they had six children together: John (1875 - 1950), Mary (Kluever) (1877 - 1950), Fred (1880 - 1965), Henry (1883 - 1950), August Bud (1886 - 1941) and Emma (Mihulka) (1889 - 1968).

Diedrich then married Therese Maxant (1876 - ) on 20 Dec 1904. and they had two children together: Olga Nelson (1905 - 1989) and Walter (1907 - 1998).

He died on 2 Apr 1919, in Columbus, Nebraska, at the age of 78, and was buried there.

The following along with newspaper clippings tells a bit about the lives of these first cousins of my grandfather, William Leopold Brunken.

John Brunken was born on October 23, 1875, in Columbus, Nebraska. John became a farmer and married his first cousin, Marie "Mary", in 1902 in Platte Center, Nebraska. They had 11 children in 19 years. He died on October 5, 1950, in his hometown, at the age of 74, and was buried there.

Mary Brunken was born on September 1, 1877, in Columbus, Nebraska. She married Herman August Kluever on March 1, 1898, in her hometown. They had 10 children in 15 years. She died on April 15, 1950, in Columbus, Nebraska, at the age of 72, and was buried in Platte Center, Nebraska.

Fred Brunken was born on October 31, 1880, in Columbus, Nebraska. He died on January 30, 1965, at the age of 84. Fred worked as a farm laborer and tried other things:

Story

I received this "Photographs" album prepared by my mother, Hilda Ida Brunken, along with other memorabilia after my parents passed away.

By posting the photographs and captions along with related stories in a blog named "Hilda's Photo Album", it is my hope to not only preserve the contents of my mother's album but also provide a vehicle for sharing them with relatives and anyone else who might be interested.

Memories This Album Holds

The album contains snapshots that are almost a century old - many of which my mother took and are related to my maternal family heritage.

The time period covered is approximately 1920 to 1928 with most of the pictures being from 1923 to 1927. This was primarly from the time my mother graduated from grade school to a couple years after she graduated from high school. There were also loose pictures associated with the album having dates up to the mid-1930s.

This "Hilda's Photo Album" blog complements the "Grandma Brunken's Post Cards Album" blog which primarily covers the time previous to 1920 and related family pictures from other sources.

Long Range Plans

I anticipate that the content of this blog will eventually expand beyond the photographs contained in this album and the time period they cover. Included will be pictures from other albums that my mother prepared such as her participation in plays, summer camps, family outings and family trips.

If anyone knows of other related albums that were prepared by my mother or other family members, I would like to learn of the same so that the images and stories they contain can also be included here.

John and Johanna Brunken Home[1]

Story

Laurel Brunken[2] and I spent some time with this picture of the John and Johanna (Plath) Brunken home and family. Included in the picture are Plath and Gottberg family members. The connection between the families was that Leopold Plath (brother of Johanna (Plath) Brunken and son of Ludwig Plath) married the sister of Max Gottberg, Mathilda Gottberg, in New Jersey prior to the families moving to Nebraska.

As per Betty Meyn[3], assuming that the baby (Number 6 in the picture) being held by Johanna (Plath) Brunken (Number 5 in the picture) is Johanna's youngest child, Louise, then this picture would have had to been taken in about summer of 1897.

Diane Lliteras verified that this is a photograph of the John and Johanna Brunken home in Shell Creek Township of Platte County, Nebraska.
Laurel Brunken found this photograph on findagrave.com. It had been added by William Peel who's great great grandfather, William Gottberg, was the brother of Max Gotteberg in the picture. William Peel had obtained the photograph from Diane Lliteras whose great grandparents were John and Johanna Brunken.
Betty Meyn noted: "Yes, the picture is John and Johanna Brunken's house on the farm near Shell Creek. The names you have listed on the picture are what I have but also have penciled in that Ma is holding Louise and the little boy in the front is Otto. If it is Louise, then this picture would have had to been taken in about summer of 1897. " Louise is Betty Meyn's grandmother. Email received Sunday November 23, 2014.
