It was a lovely spring day the day before Mothers Day and I was going next day to get the flowers to transform my balcony to “Garden of Edith” as I do every year.

I felt exceptionally good, because two days before on my last Dr appointment all test results where normal and my Dr was very pleased and encouraged me to keep doing what I do.

I was sweeping and hamming when suddenly a very dull pain in the middle of my hart, and I immediately knew that I was having a heart attack. I sat down bewildered waiting for it to go away. Instead, the pain moved on to my left arm and shoulder. I realized this is not going away, and I had better gotten myself to the emergency. I was alone in the house but did not loose consciences.

I was given an EKG and a blood test, repeated in six hours to determine if this was really a heart attack. It was. By evening fluid started to be build-up in my lungs, I had difficulty breathing. An oxygen mask, diuretic administered orally and intravenously restored my breathing in 45 minutes. It was a frightening experience.

Angioplasty showed 35% of deposits, so no procedure was necessary and after five days I was home.

I joined a four-month cardio rehabilitation program, very closely monitored the first month. It helped me overcome the fear and denial. It encouraged and supervised the exercise program and after the first month I joint a strength and balance class three times a week.

Today, I am fully recovered back to my routine, and the goal is to restore the level of exercise I used to do before. I am working on it. It was a freightening experience and changed my outlook on life.

My Family

Counting the days for their arrival finally was over. It was sunny and very pleasant day to welcome my grandson and his family. Most importantly the two little girls whom I saw last when Liliana was 2/5 and Norah 3 months old.
Within minutes the house looked like it was hit by a tornado. Luggage all over the place and toys everywhere with two happy giggling little girls playing in the middle of the room. Liliana now 3 years old and Norah 9 months. I called it a delicious mess where the warmth and the sunshine came from the inside the house.
However, this is not all. There was no problem with eating sleeping sharing or toilet training. When Marita put Liliana for her afternoon nap, she asked for a diaper, you do not need a diaper anymore, to which Liliana replied “but this is not my bed”
She just turned three. Will she grow up to be considered and thoughtful towards others? I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

I am so very proud of this family, they marriage seems rock solid, the way they raise the children, with calm voice, choice consequences and most of all infinite patience and love. There are a constant parent-children communication and Liliana fully understands it. Norah looks at the intensely like somebody who understands what they are talking about and then gives a big smile and happy sounds. Just delightful.

Well, they are gone now. The house is in order and very quiet, and I miss them a lot.

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day and did not over eat, but if you did, go to the gym or take a 30 min walk every day and watch your calories.
Well over eating is not over. The holiday season is upon us and that means food wherever you go, or whomever you visit. You not only have to watch yourself, but your children as well.
Children have the instinctive ability to regulate they food intake
To meet their needs. Do not force your children’s to clean the plate, or bribe them with desert to finish their meal. I did it when my children are where small and boy was I wrong.
Here are some tips I learned since they were small and applied to my grandchildren’s. It may be helpful to you as well.
Never use food for reward, instead reward desired behaviour with praise. Extra attention and privileges.
Do not impose strict food rules to avoid rebellious eating when the child is away from home. Don’t say that one food is good, other is bad. Rather teach them that some food is healthier than other is. Teach them the balance for eating for nourishment and enjoyment. To help this process provide a variety of healthy delicious choice for snakes and meals. After a while if you keep doing it becomes part of a healthy life style. Include fresh or dried fruits and vegetable with low fat dips, low fat cheese, and peanut butter. Whole grain bread or crackers. Yogurt whole fruit ice pops, granola bars.
A healthy breakfast is a good way to start a day and it will greatly improve their performance in school. Don’t underestimate the importance of breakfast. For me it is my most important mealtime.
Include protein and whole grain for energy and nourishment, also encourage drinking water and low fat milk instead of sugary sodas or sport drinks
For high fibber promote whole wheat and multigrain breads, brown rice, whole-wheat pasta.
Include your child in meal planning and do the shopping together if you can. Earlier you start better chance you have to turn all this hard work into a healthy lifestyle.

How do you build healthy attitudes?
First you demonstrate an unconditional love for your children which is easy when they are small, not so when they reach the rebellious teen-age stage. You still love them, only is harder to demonstrate. However no matter how old they are they need the support, acceptance and encouragement from the parents.
Help them develop interest and skills that increases they success and pleasure.
Help your children develop good communication skills and encourage them to express they feeling and teach them effective coping skills and make sure that they can come to you and can communicate any problem without fear from you.
Be there for them; be strong, fair and just. Never criticize unless you can make a positive criticism and never belittle.
It is not easy to be a parent but is hard to grow up as well. They are surrounded by peer pressure, which in many cases is not the best. If your children know they can count on you at all time, have no fear communicating no matter what, you have an excellent chance to have well balanced children growing up to be well balanced healthy adults.
The world needs well-balanced adults and that starts with you as a parent.

It starts with you the parent by being a positive role model. The way you shop, cook, eat and do physical activity will be imitated by your children.
Sow them your UNCONDITIONAL love especially if you have an overweight, handicapped or special need child. They need your acceptance, encouragement and support. By focusing on your child positive qualities and talent, showing interest in the skills and pleasure will build them self esteem and the good feeling about themselves.
Do things together, like eating, outdoor sports, walks, bicycle rides. Have family dinners together, talk about your day. Have fun laugh a lot. Build good memories. It will stay with them all they life.

I didn’t realized how I neglected this blog by not publishing anything for such a long time. Well I try to rectify that and I promise to be more attentive to it.
Watching my two great granddaughters growing up (unfortunately from far) and seeing how they are growing adopting healthy behaviour and eating habits, it amazes me. When my boys where they age eating were a whole production and so was many other things. Everything was a struggle. We where new emigrants, didn’t spoke the language and had no family support to speak off. But that was long time ago. Bringing up children today it is a whole different ball game.
Parenting is the most important job and also the most rewarding and satisfying experience you can have. Parents have to work 24/7 around the clock to keep they children healthy happy, safe and secure. When they are toddlers they need to be thought and watched to stay away from hot food, stove, electrical outlets harsh chemicals and sharp objects
Right eating habits, playing and sharing, proper bed time and positive attitude, not much TV and more outdoor play, should start as early as possible and they will learn, if you model it to them.
Like I said parenting is a big responsibility, not easy but worth every effort you put into it.

The Happy House On The Hill

I call it the happy house on the hill. It is large and houses two families who own it together.

The two women are sisters and each is married. They and the two husbands come from different cultural and religious background and each couple has two children. The ages are three, two, one and a half, and two months.
There is an incredible peace harmony and calmness in that house, the children are well behaved, no jalousie or very little and they are very protective of each other specially the two older ones protecting the two young babies.

The stay home mom has a master degree in early child- hood education, which helps and she runs that household like a well-seasoned sea captain. However, with a lot of love and fun and order, and without any pressure upon them

When the parents return at night, work stays outside the door. The minute they walk in quality time begins until the childrens all go to bed without a hitch or too much coaxing. The love, which these kids are surrounded, is enormous. Everything is geared for them and for they well being. The house is a giant nursery, no worry that they may pull down or break something .Growing up in such a safe secure warm and stable environment must have a positive effect. I wish to be around when they are going to be in the teens, but I think that is too much to ask being 86. However, I am working on it.
It was very different when I was a young mom and comparing raising children then and now, it seems that then was the dark ages.
These kids have a very solid secure foundation to build them life, which in the end will make them happy healthy and secure adults.
One of the dads in that household is my grandson and the two little girls are my great granddaughters. I am very proud of them all.

I am happy to live long enough to see how that role of fathers has been changed since my time. 60 years ago, it was unheard of for a father to be in the delivery room with his wife witnessing the birth of the child. He was pacing up and down in the waiting room with other nervous fathers.
To change diapers, burp the baby, and push a pram was not the fathers roll and men did not do that. It probably where exceptions, I personally did not know anybody otherwise.
Both my sons where in the delivery room, changed diapers burped the baby and shared the work with the wife’s for caring and looking after them sons.
Today I am a great grandmother and watching my grandson interacting. Loving and helping with his two young babies, it warms my heart. The bond and the foundation they are building will result in a healthy well-balanced children and adults.
The most important and responsible job is being a parent. The future is in the hand. We live in a violent world and all those violent people of today where children at one time. Many things must have gone wrong in they childhood and growing up.

Mother's Day Special

Is there anything better than being a grandmother? Yes it is. Being a great grandmother to two lovely girls.
On the 7th of May Norah my second great granddaughter was born, weight 7 lb, 19/5” long and her big sister 27 month old Lili just can’t have enough of her.
She was born at home with a midwife and everything went smoothly without a hitch. What a nice Mothers Day Gift. I have two sons, four grandsons and I am delighted to have two little girls in the family.
Unfortunately I cannot visit often, me living in Winnipeg Canada and they in Seattle
USA.
Ah... but there is the computer and Skype, so I can be in contact with them and hear them sweet voices. Not the same thing, but the next best thing and I am thankful.

If they are old enough insist in summer job, or volunteer work.
Use reward and consequences if necessary and remember you are the parent and you are in charge
Time spent as a family unit by planning, playing working together, is not only good for them and for you, but builds cherished memories as well.
If they are bored they will spend long hours in front of the TV or getting involved with the wrong crowd smoking or doing drugs
Protect them you are raising the future.

The First Lady Michele Obama is trying to change the eating habits of children’s to avoid child obesity and diabetes in children. I hope she will succeed, but you as a parent have to do your part as well.
I cannot imagine anything being more important than the wellbeing of your child.
Make the change mom and dad; it does not have to be expensive or fancy. Just nutritious and fresh. lean and delicious. Do it together if possible, plan the meal shop for it and cook it fresh.
I know it is not easy, but trust me is worth it. Limit TV watching, encourage outdoor play, and start young, they will grow up valuing proper food and exercise.
Do not wait until something happens or the damage is irreversible.
You be surprised how creative you can become when the will, motivation and priority is there.
Set an example, children will not lose weight if they parents lifestyle is unhealthy. Obesity is a disease for young, old and in-between. Life is excessively short to be wasted. You have the power to do something about it.

I have just returned from Seattle, where I visited my great granddaughter, whom I have not seen since she was 3 months old and now she just turned two

I was surprised by her development, her growth amount of words she knows. She appeared to be more than two more likely three just the way she related to me and other adults, the way she played with her cousin’s one a year older, one a year younger than she is.

She came to me and cuddled up to me knowing me only trough Skype on the computer screen. It was delightful.

Next day we all vent out for lunch, seven adults, and Lilly. I walked with her holding her hand while she was singing aloud. In the restaurant as we sat down around a big table, she was chattering nonstop in her language, which only her parents can understand

Her father took out the coloring book for her to play and placed it in front of her when in a very clear voice she said “no! I-phone” that was not a request; it was a command in a clear English, no baby language. She took the phone and with no hesitation opened it, searched for the cartoon s, found it and became much immersed in it, while her father was doing the coloring. It was a funny lovely scene.

Today’s children are so smart and advanced it seems that they are born with a chip in the brain or come with a special soft ware. No it is the today’s parents that are smarter advanced and well educated. When I think back to the time my children where babies, it seems that I lived in the dark ages. However, they turned out just perfect.

What is going to happen to the children is in Haiti after the media is left, and more

or less some kind of order is established?
The infants and younger children are going to be adopted. Many of them for sure. What is going to happen to the older ones and the teen agers? I mean those who will have no relatives close or distance who can take care of them. Where will they live, go to school be fed and clothed? So far, I did not even hear this problem addressed. Does any world organization have any plans? Any country willing to take them in house them, feed them supervise them and teach them so when they reach adulthood they can go home and contribute and help manage they own country.
Am I to naive to even think of such a possibility? Left on they own now many of them may became victims of rape abuse and crime. They may form bands or lured into ones. It is a frightening thought.

At some point, your child will come home from school upset, full of complaint telling you that they hate the teacher. How would you handle the situation?

The best thing I would say is to listen calmly to the complaint without jumping to a conclusion.
The child could be upset and frustrated with a difficult test or assignment, or being embarrassed for being called down in front of the class
You have to listen very calmly, be reassuring and very patient. You have to ask the questions “what the teacher did or said to upset you?” What did the kids do, is anybody bullying you? From those answers, you may get the idea of what could have happened. If in a short time your child forgets and goes out to play that is great and you can move on, but if the child stays upset has problem going to sleep and tells you that he doesn’t want to go to school the next day then talk about it and try to solve the problem together to find a simple solution. You should also go to the next open house night and listen to the teacher expectation, talk to other parents and see if they have a similar problem or concerns. Go and pick your child up early and observe how he/she relates to other children.
If what you hear and see is in line with what you hear at home, then call the teacher and set up an appointment to share the concern with her and to try to solve the problem together.
If your child is old enough, bring him/her with you. It is important that they understand that a positive resolution with the teacher is the best solution for everybody’s concern.

My Winter Escap

After a very balm November, winter came suddenly and put us in a deep freeze.

22 years ago while still working I was visiting Arizona with an Elderhostel program I bought a small condominium in the middle of the desert literary, There was nothing around but desert, cotton fields, broccoli fields and orange grows. It was an impulse buy and it was a new development for a retirement village.
It was wonderful even dough you had to drive miles to get anything. .
22 years later, it is now surrounded by several shopping centers, many new homes. Gone are the orange grows, cotton fields replaced by concrete and traffic.
However, this is progress.
I am happy I had this impulse and looking forward every winter to escape the freezing weather.
The place is small , population about 3000, gated community, beautiful 18 hole golf course a huge heated swimming pool and lots of organized activity, where you can participate or not. It is really paradise.
Sometime an impulse act turns out to be good.

When my grandchildren where small all they wanted to eat was grilled cheese sandvich. They were very meticulous of what they eat and mealtime was a struggle.
Sounds familiar? I had to come up with something, so I started to cook a variety of vegetable, pureed, and hid in the spaghetti sauce. They loved it and never knew the difference.
Eventually they outgrew this stage and today they are very strong healthy young men with good eating and life style habits.
They most likely would of grown up the same way without me interfeering, but I like to think that I was instrumental helping them to grow healthy and strong.

The other day somebody asked me, what I think about school uniforms.
I believe it is a good idea.
Children come to school from different financial backgrounds and that could create a social divide. Kids whose parents are not well off cannot buy expensive cloths. Those kids may feel left out less important, envious. All this feelings will influence they performance, how they feel about themselves values angry with the parents.
Uniforms would eliminate most of these things. At least in school they would look the same.
The hardest and most responsible job is to be a parent. The children are the future and a child that comes from a loving well-balanced family setting, is less likely to do drugs, engage in sexual activity, steel or lie. Parents are the models and the rock in the children is growing up stages. Money has nothing to do with it
Attitude and the right value are
We need stable people to have a better and safer world and it starts right from the cradle.
