Apanhador Só is a Brazilian rock band founded in 2005 in Rio Grande do Sul. The band has gained fame, was nominee for the VMB (a brazilian version of VMA) and participated in the soundtrack of movies like "Before the World Ends".

The song, which is about the routine and the pressure that we feel today, has a clip where the camera close to the actor's face and matches perfectly with the excitement transmitted by the lyric.

Despirocar is a single from the album "Before You Tell Another" financed by fans by Catarse which raised nearly U.S. $ 55mi. Today the album to be downloaded is available on the band's website.

Duane Michals

Duane Michals (American, b.1932) is a photographic artist who makes innovative use of photograph sequences to depict emotion and universal themes like love, death, and immortality. Michals was born in McKeesport, PA. He became interested in art in 1946, while attending classes at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1953, Michals received a BA from the University of Denver, CO, and, after this, he joined the United States Army. Michals joined The Parsons School of Design in 1956, intending to become a graphic designer, but he did not complete his studies. Michals discovered an interest in photography while on a holiday in Russia, and his involvement in photography grew.

Michals worked as a commercial photographer for the magazines Mademoiselle and Esquire, and he covered the filming of The Great Gatsby for Vogue in 1974. In contrast to other photographers of the time, Michals did not have a studio, and he preferred to take portrait photographs of people in their environment. He is noted for two innovations in artistic photography in the 1960s and the 1970s; first, Michals used a series of photographs to tell a story, and second, he gave information that the images could not convey by writing text near his photographs. Michals has acknowledged the influence of various artists, including Lewis Carroll (British, 1832–1898), William Blake (British, 1757-1827), and René Magritte (Belgian, 1898-1967). His work has influenced various artists, who can be referred to as members of the artistic photography movement, including Francesca Woodman (American, 1958 - 1981) and David Levinthal (American, b.1949).

Over the years, Michals's approach to expressive photography changed considerably. His early interest in street happenings led him to make single documentary images of events that were considered part of what then was called the “social landscape.” In the mid-1960s he lost interest in straight documentation. Inspired by the work of such painters as René Magritte and Balthus, Michals began to address literary and philosophical ideas about death, gender, and sexuality. He usually staged scenes to be photographed and worked with multiple exposures, sequences, and series. He also experimented with combining text and drawings with his images.

"You don’t need school. See, I’ve always been self-motivated. I never needed anyone to give me an assignment. When I was in high school, I used to prepare for the scholastic contests. I would paint all summer on my own. I always liked working towards a goal, like a contest or an exhibition. I would constantly give myself assignments. What schools should do is free you to be you, and how to find your thing. I found my thing and my thing is . . . many things! I keep evolving. At 81, I’m doing really interesting new work that nobody has ever done before. I knew there was a space between photography and painting and I’ve now found a way to fill it."

"That was called “Chance Meeting” and it has a lot of implications. Of course the easiest one to do is I’m being gay. It’s a classic gay situation where two men pass each other and there’s a moment of recognition. But it really came from during the Korean War I was a second lieutenant tanks in Germany for two – Anyway, and I was walking through Times Square and I – this fellow passed me by and I thought, God, that looks so – who is that? And then about two blocks later, I think that’s the guy I was in the Army with. And when I turned around, he was gone. So it was that – So I would operate from those instincts. I never look for something. I always work out of my own passions and my own aware – my own consciousness."

Over the past five decades, Michals’s work has been exhibited in the United States and abroad. The Museum of Modern Art, New York, hosted Michals’s first solo exhibition (1970), and a year later the George Eastman House, Rochester, NY, mounted another (1971). More recently, he has had one-person shows at the Odakyu Museum, Tokyo (1999), and at the International Center of Photography, New York (2005). In 2008, Michals celebrates his 50th anniversary as a photographer with a retrospective exhibition at the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, Greece and the Scavi Scaligeri in Verona, Italy. His work has been included in numerous group shows including, “Cosmos” at the Musée de Beaux-Arts de Montréal (1999).

Michals's work belongs to numerous permanent collections in the U.S. and abroad, including the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Moderna Museet, Stockholm; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Michals's archive is housed at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh.

Michals published a number of books of his work, including "Sequences" (1970), "Homage to Cavafy: Ten Poems by Constantine Cavafy/Ten Photographs by Duane Michals" (1978), and "Eros & Thanatos" (1992). His work as a freelance commercial photographer ran parallel to the expression of his highly personal vision. His noncommercial photographs were widely exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe.

Autodidact, Duane began his career as a photographer by curiosity. As Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger, the words are a fundamental part of his poetics. He uses photography as a means of spiritual sublimation. Duane produced until today, using besides writing, paintings on photography.

Nan Goldin and the marginal photography

If today photographing the underground world seems cliché, a way to force a good photograph and to create a pseudo cult style, this is due to a reason, or a person.

The marginal photograph had its roots with the American photographer Nan Goldin, who for years photographed controversial figures like transsexual prostitutes and scenes of drug use and nudity. Goldin was born in 1953 in Washington DC and raised in Boston, where she had contact with the Gay scene and started shooting it, especially the Drag Queens.

In the late '70s, after graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston / Tufts University, the artist moves to New York and continue her work there. The historical moment is of cultural revolution, which begins with the hippies and intensifies with the punks, who recognize themselves in the works of Nan Goldin, which simultaneously begin to explore the universe of post punk and new age.

At that time the artist spotlights the photos with drug users. A series of photos "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" portrays this reality and shows images of violence, heavy drugs, couples in aggressive scenes and autobiographical moments, including a photo of the artist ("Nan one month after being battered, 1984" ) with marks of violence on the eyes made by former boyfriend.

Nan’s photos have a very strong emotional charge, full of sexuality, melancholia, defeatism and dependence. And why choosing that theme? Certainly it can be considered that she have already inhabited that underground scene, but we have to point a very pessimistic and fatalist intern vision. May that’s due to the fact that she lost her older sister in an early age, Barbara Holly committed suicide in 1965, with 18 years old.

Some of her most relevant works, made between the late 80’s and the early 90’s, show the reality of terminally ill patients, suffering with aids. The disease of the end of the XX century, that reach many of the ones involved on the scene, shot by Goldin in the 70’s and 80’s. Actually most of the characters on “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” died because of this.

When a teacher has proposed a work from the phrase "What the wind says when she cries," I did not know it would result in a video and a trip to my first series of paintings, "Goddesses". I think is from these rediscoveries and re-interpretations that the artists live for, you need to bathe again in waters you have already navigated in order to evolve. "Pala" has emerged as a first incursion into the world of film and video editing.

Fabrics, movement, femininity, color, wind, salt spray, sea, music, Venus, divinity, loneliness, ancestry, tropicality, sublimation, tranquility and dream are some of the words that move this video.

Rio de Janeiro is one of the largest cultural centers of Brazil, this month there is a good amount of exhibits to visit, I have enumerated some of them in this post.

"Elles: Women Artists in the Collection of the Centre Pompidou" open for visits on May 24 and will be in CCBB until July,telling a new story of art made just for women artists. "Elles: Women Artists in the Collection of the Centre Pompidou" open for visits on May 24 and will be in Rio until July CCBBs telling a new story of art made just for women artists. There will be 180 works, some of them personal manifestos against gender injustice both in art and in society. The works cover the period of a century - from 1907 to 2010 - in different formats such as painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video and installation. All works are part of collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou / Musée National d'Art Moderne which houses the largest collection of contemporary art in Europe. Artists like Brazilians Rosangela Renno, Anna Bella Geiger, Anna Maria Maiolino and others are present in the selection of curated, alongside names such as Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois and Sonia Delaunay.

One of the first abstract artists of Brazil, Antonio Bandeira gets a tribute at the Centro Cultural Correios, bringing together an amount of 70 works, including watercolors, drawings and paintings. His art is passionate, influenced generations of artists, drunk from the fountain of cubism, surrealism and expressionism, while dealing with these references in an absolutely personal way, performing a real "pictorial cannibalism." The exhibition also displays two films about the artist, and the film "The Collector Twilights" of J.Siqueira.

"I never paint canvas. I try to paint. My canvas is always a sequence of the canvas that has already been prepared for what is being done at the moment, going to join this canvas will be born later. Dirceu Maues, Brazilian artist, originally from the state of Pará uses chronophotography (chrono = time, time photography) as a form of expression.

In video art "Like dust in the wind" captures 991 pictures from the Ver-o-Peso Market in Belem for 4 hours. The negatives made in a pinhole (lensless photographic camera that uses the principle of darkroom) are placed like a shot in a sequence that lasts 3.5 minutes.

With the positioning of several images of the same location, Maues makes a 360 ° turn in the marketplace, placing the viewer in a central area. During these four hours the spot is exposed to a range of motion and noise, more intense at the beginning of the video (and the day) and slower at the end. To intensify this sense, the artist records sound market environment and make a mix.

Somehow, the work of Dirceu Maues resembles the photographer Sebastião Salgado, the way that both depict Brazilianness and daily life so peculiar. However, Maues literally uses local color to create an atmosphere, through technologies quite primitive.

Dirceu is one of the exponents of the new generation of Brazilian photographers, having won awards inside and outside the country.

The gala ball of the MET(Metropolitan Museum of Art) Costume Institute's this year had the theme "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" . The outfits had numerous references to the movement that emerged in the late '60s in London with Sex Pistols musicians and fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. Tacks, spikes, pins, transparencies and black, very black.

"The Ball was about the Punks, the night was the tacky's night" sets perfectly the red carpet event.

Despite lots of good looks , what we could see was a festival of horrors. A mixture of aute couture with a lousy punk boutique style and terrible stylists. Who escaped the theme unfortunately also incorporated the mood of the other invited and chose totally inappropriate looks (but of course, there are exceptions, there always are).

Actress from the Millenium trillogy, Rooney did the opposite of her character Lispeth Slander, ovoiding the super dark punk to a total white look, full of ruffles and lace. Despite beeing a very white person, the color emphasized her style and her face details. To make it prettier, only taking out this central ziper. She got itt right on the make up that combines with thw theme and on the absence of accessories that highlighted the dress.

Ginnifer Goodwin, the Snow White of the series “Once Upon A
tIme”  have not used the most interesting
look of the night , but she knew how to respect her style, super romantic, and
the theme, trought the colours, the sequins, and even trought her own haircut,
super short and black. Ginni just could have used a lighte make up, without
extending the black shadow to the eyebrowns, it looked like a mask.

A Anna Wintour, the most powerful editrix of the planet, ran
out of the theme, but did it with class. The dress not only combines with her
own style ( take a look, she always uses short sleeves), has a floral print
that is very interesting, because the white flowers são built by the opposition
of the flowers around it and arew at the same time part of the background.

And to start talking about the bad looks let's start with a hideous. Lauren, from Moda Operandi used the gothic aesthetic, mixed brocade, silver, a bouffant sleeve a la Elizabeth I, a choker with spikes and an over collar, result: should have stay at home, even in hallowen people shouldn't dress like this . A pity, because Lauren normally dress in a flawless manner (and she is, therefore, always in street style sites).

Fashion Meeting - OK Mall

Last Sunday I lectured in a fashion meeting about "The influence of blogs on fashion consumption" at the Moda Jardim event . The event took place at the newly opened OK Mall, the first open air shopping center in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. The fashion meeting was super relaxed and cool chat whit me and blogger Cynthia Storck, we're both invited by fashion journalist Evelyn Bonorino.

As it was my first lecture I was a little nervous at first, but then I was calm and loved the experience of being able to share my knowledge with those who are interested.And I'd like to thank once more to all present and the event production.
