The Journal is published to promote the study and discussion of philosophical questions about aesthetic experience and the arts.

The British Journal of Aesthetics holds a competition each year open to students on full-time undergraduate or graduate courses at art and design schools or in fine art/design departments in any country to design a cover for the journal, which is published by Oxford University Press, both in print and online.

The specific brief for this year’s competition is to design a cover for a Special Issue on The Senses, which will explore connections between and connecting parts of the philosophy of perception and aesthetics.

The overall cover design includes an image, generally a black & white photograph of a sculpture or a detail from a print. It is normally but not necessarily a monochrome image. Entries to the competition will consist in a .jpeg or .tiff containing an image, and a cover design incorporating the image, which can be assembled using a template that can be downloaded from the website (available in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop).

The resolution of the image must be at least 300dpi. There is no restriction on the use of colour.

There is no entry fee. Eligibility To be eligible to enter the competition, you must be enrolled on a full-time undergraduate or graduate course at an art school on 30 January 2012. Prize • Shortlisted designs will be displayed on the BJA website.

• The winning design will be used on the cover of the October 2012 issue of the BJA. The issue will carry a half-page about the winner and his or her work. The winner will receive 5 printed copies of the issue featuring their design, and will also be invited to choose £150-worth of books published by OUP, free of charge. The winner and shortlisted entrants will be notified by email in June 2012.<br><br><i>Advertisement: <br>

In a saturated consumer market where design is everywhere (and nowhere) there are objects from the recent past whose traces are being lost. They are anonymous or everyday objects, on a small scale or mass production. The aim is to build a large memory atlas dedicated to the anonymous design of the countries of Central Eastern Europe, therefore in this year’s competition, participants are asked to identify an object from the collective memory, which demonstrates design skill, it can be simple or complex as long as it is meaningful. The object could be a household tool or alternatively professional equipment or small objects for building.

Once the participants have singled out their object they must photograph it on a white backdrop, outline in writing a brief history, comment on the motivations behind the choice and then proceed onto a reuse and redefinition project, which could take shape in a ready-made project or simply a change of function.

Every participant should submit:
• 3 photographs of the object on a white backdrop
(JPG or PDF format, minimum resolution 300 dpi);
• a text outlining the story of the object (maximum 800 characters);
• a text accounting for its selection and explaining the new project (maximum 800 characters);
• the new project presented for the competition that must be original and composted of no more than 3 plates in jpg or pdf format, minimum resolution 300 dpi (freehand design, cad, rendering, etc…)

There is no entry fee. Eligibility The competition is open to all designers born in CEI Member States (Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine) as well as Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Turkey. Prize The jury will select a number of works which will be shown in an exhibition in Trieste (Italy) and published in the online catalogue provided.

• BEBA PRIZE for the youngest designer among those selected: 1000 Euros.
• CEI PRIZE for the best designer from one of the CEI countries not an EU member: 3000 Euros.
• GILLO DORFLES PRIZE – TRIESTE CONTEMPORANEA DESIGN 2012 for the best project: 4000 Euros.<div class="feedflare">

The exhibition is about this urban art movement that rethinks and questions actual parameters of art without even intending to do so. A movement that breaks the silence imposed by the conformance of the majority, offering its truth about reality through the art.

Just as no words are needed to break silence, there is no need to be obvious when communicating something.
Thus, we do not ask especially for works with political content or focus on social issues but give every artist the opportunity to express his or her vision of the world in his own style or the way he/she likes best.

Finally, the exhibition is going to be a good reflection of how urban artists see the present and how they share that vision with the world. The intention is to create a bridge of dialogue and communication between different views and ways of expressions, not a contest or a competition. However, we are obliged to select a limited number of exhibition participants due to space limitation.

Artists can participate in 4 different ways:

• Wheatpaste (paper,cardboard, etc.)
• Canvas
• Installations/performance
• Stickers

There is no entry fee. Eligibility This exhibition is open to any artist worldwide. Prize There are not money prizes, just the chance of being part of the exhibition.<div class="feedflare">

The main theme is Happiness On the Move.

Its interpretation is left free to the vision, creativity and sensitivity of the authors who are called to reflect on the theme, moving away from its purely literal meaning and to develop it in its various aspects.

Special attention is given to the theme of movement as a real or figurative journey and to the happiness that follows: "I do not want to trap my thoughts, but the smell of my joy" (Jaques Henri Lartigue)

Happiness is a choice, as an ideal image within a wider and more complex story, it’s something inner, that you find despite the problems, but not without problems. Happiness is a fleeting moment that can occur in a series of random events and we have to recognize it or pass by indifferently… Happiness is suspension, poetic digression, a picture that brings your memory back to a place, glancing details, fragments of joy like those "in between moments" that are held on to in order to be revised and re-lived, and that in every moment of our existence constantly nourish life.

Each author may submit 1 project, which must contain a minimum of 8 images to a maximum of 15. It is mandatory to attach to the images a short text that explains the project in addition to a brief biography (no more than 1000 characters per document.)

Images must be submitted as digital files, the longest side the size of 1024 pixels, at a resolution of 100 dpi, color or b/w, in JPG format. Eligibility This international award open to photographers, professionals and amateurs, from all over the world, with no limitations of age. Prize The award has a valor of 5,000 Euro (approx. 6,500 USD), which will be delivered to the selected author during the festival Cortona On The Move, photography in travel. The winner will also have the opportunity to see his project mounted in a solo exhibition during the 2013 edition of the festival.<div class="feedflare">

"It is through the eccentric personality of an artist that art will return to play out its most important role. To communicate. To surprise. To shock. Because to shock is one of contemporary art’s most current concepts. A key theme to understand the dynamics which dictated the paradigms from Warhol to Hirst. The shark in formaldehyde by Hirst was created to shock. The images of prostitutes in Teheran by the Iranian artist Shirin Fakhim were made to shock. Catellan’s boy with a drum, the gigantic sculptures by Ron Mueck or the perverse works by the American artist Paul McCarthy or by the Chapman Brothers, are created to shock.

To have the courage to use one’s sensitivity to change the world! Govern one’s own Explosion of Self. What better moment than this to do so.

In this call I expect to review artistic projects which are capable of slapping everyday life. I expect ideas before objects. A work of art is not an object. A work of art is a thought. A thought which can be translated into a painting on canvas as much as in a performance, a video or an installation."

Fee: 30 € (approx. 40 USD) for each project (20 € for each additional project) - up to ten images or videos can be uploaded as part of the project’s explanatory material. Each project can include works in different media: photography, painting, video, installation, etc.

Artists retain copyright of all works and texts they upload. Eligibility Artists, photographers, designers, architects and creatives regardless of age, sex, occupation or geographic location. Prize Ten projects will be selected by Jacopo Perfetti by 30 July. The projects will be exhibited at Superground space of Art Kitchen in Milan from 15 September to 30 September. Following the announcement of selected projects, Jacopo Perfetti will decide whether some or all of works in each selected project will be exhibited, having taken into account the nature of all other selected projects and available exhibition space.

A catalogue containing images and texts from the ten selected projects, as well as brief artists’ bios, and critical texts will be published.<div class="feedflare">

"It’s been a fantasy of ours, and of many artists, to turn Times Square into an awe-inspiring art experience," said William Etundi Jr., Founder and Director of Artists Wanted. "It’s an honor to work with the Times Square Alliance and Chashama to turn that fantasy into reality."

In concert with the Times Square Alliance and curatorial partner Chashama, a non-profit group for creative space transformation, Artists Wanted has produced Art Takes Times Square, a worldwide call for entries searching for inspired works by artists, designers, photographers and all creative talents from across the globe to determine one creative visionary whose artwork - in an opportunity of a lifetime - will receive a radiant presentation on Times Square’s digital billboards before millions of viewers this summer.

There is no entry fee. Eligibility Any creative person in the world can enter the competition, as long as you are 18 years of age or older as of the date of entry. Prize One artist will be selected to receive $10,000 cash, a printed inclusion in a limited edition Art Takes Times Square book, and the exhibition of a lifetime: his/her work will be displayed on the most iconic billboards of Times Square.

If selected your work will be seen in bright lights by tens of thousands of people in Times Square. We will also produce an online feature sent out to hundreds of thousands of art enthusiasts around the globe. Prepare for art infamy.

All artists get a gorgeous online portfolio and hundreds will be shown at the Artists Wanted after-party featuring Questlove of the Roots / Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.<div class="feedflare">

There are four categories:

• Spectrum
This is your spectrum. Your vision. What you capture when you’re out and about. Street, Landscape, Beaches, Water, Nature. The list is endless on the great outdoors.

• Freestyle
Fashion, Portraiture, Journalistic, Music or Art. Edgy, Soft, Surreal, Black and White. Whatever your style, we want to see your shots and editorial images.

• Snapshot
All you Hipstamatic, Instagram and Tilt-shift addicts. Lets see what random snapshots you’ve got hidden away or why not start shooting to win. We want to see those prize winning images.

• The Series
This is our toughest category with a minimum of 15 images required for entry. This is also our only eligible category for taking out the Shutterbug Award and the major prizes on offer.

Although we value any photographer who submits images to any of the categories, ’The Series’ is the predominate category that Shutterbug focuses on. This has been our vision from the beginning. We see this as an ideal platform to have a body of your work seen and appreciated. It encourages photographers to strive for excellence across a series of images rather than a single photograph. This is great experience for the real world of commercial photography.

All images submitted to the Shutterbug Award remain the copyright of the photographer. Eligibility The Shutterbug Award will only accept entries from photographers who are considered non–professional by the standards of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers. i.e. Photographers who make less than $20,000 per annum from photography. This includes International Entrants. Prize As well as a prize pool of over $20 000, 25 Finalists will have their winning images published in the annual Shutterbug Award book and exhibited via a projection on the Big Screen to a packed audience at The Shutterbug Award night and Wrap-up party at The Palace Cinema, Sydney, Oct 2012.

Any photographer entering Shutterbug has a unique opportunity to have career building exposure. Our judges are at the top of their chosen fields which creates an unparalleled chance to have your work seen by these photo-industry and media professionals.<div class="feedflare">

Thanks to its tradition, fairness, authentic industry focus, challenging tasks, international jury, complex selection process, refined documentation, as well as the subsequent success of former award winners, FASH has become one of the most important sponsorship award for fashion design students.

This year FASH features the theme "SEXes" and is searching for the new role model for men - and women. The current trends on catwalks and on the streets show that the structure of conventional masculinity is clearly changing and it is a change affecting men and women alike. At the same time, this dynamism can be seen as uncertainty for others who yearn for more stable roles for men and women.

The first part of the project to be submitted must include an independent analysis of the role of the sexes today. based on your analysis, develop your own image of man or woman and justify your selection. Since fashion for women and men are generally related, it is possible to enter collections for men only, for women only, as well as mixed or unisex collections. Designs may be visionary, yet should suit the situation you developed in your analysis, meaning, it has to be realistic in a progressive sense. The competition is looking for ambitious, independent and consistent designs.

based on this established concept the third part of the project shall interpret the results in a collection of a minimum of four outfits. Two completely finished outfits must be submitted to the jury. Complementing accessories are permitted. Depending on the analysis, the participant may choose whether to design for men, women or both. There is also no restriction on the selection of the season.

Please note: the registration deadline is September 30st and the submission deadline is October 25th, 2012. Eligibility The contest is open to especially talented design students of all disciplines, but especially from the fashion and textile design areas. Students currently enrolled in their fourth semester or higher are entitled to participate.

Students from non-European countries are also eligible to enter. Prize The following prizes will be presented for the European Fashion Award FASH 2013:

• Photo session with a renowned fashion photographer
• Printed catalogue with elaborate graphics
• Professional media service
• Extensive communication services by ISPO MUNICH
• Participation in the SDBI network, as well as mentor dialogue with SDBI project management
• Cash prizes totaling 5,000 Euro (1st Prize: 2,500 Euro; 2nd Prize: 1,500 Euro; 3rd Prize: 1,000 Euro)

The jury reserves the right to present special mentions. These feature a cash prize of 500 Euro.

Another type of special honor is the inclusion of documentation materials and presentation charts into the permanent archive of the German Fashion Industry Foundation.

All prizes have an approximate total value of more than 80,000 Euro (approx. 105,000 USD).<div class="feedflare">

What do you need in the beginning of your career as a designer? Professional facilities in well equipped workshops, qualified guidance? What about possibility to show the public and potential manufacturers the design objects you have created? And of course time and room for your work. Time to design – new talent award offers you this.

The concept behind the award is to give an opportunity for young designers to develop talent and skills under the best possible conditions.

It is up to your self to decide whether you want to apply with a design proposal or if you need to modify a more finished project. In other words: the actual design project for the exhibition is to be carried out and produced at the workshops.

An application can only include one project, but it is possible to send in more than one application, and if want you can apply together with a partner. The copyright of your design project belongs only to you. And if you are granted the award, the copyright still belongs to you.

There is no entry fee. Eligibility Any designer from all over the world in the beginning of his/her career or student. Prize The award includes a three months residency at The Danish Art Workshops, 50.000 DKK (approx. 8,800 USD) sponsored by TA, the Danish Association of Wood and Furniture Industries to cover material costs, individual career coaching by OeO, and two weeks exhibition in the Normann Copenhagen Flagship Store.<div class="feedflare">

What Chicago Fringe Festival needs from you: a single design that will be emblematic of Chicago Fringe 2012. We need a design that is so arresting, dynamic, searing, whimsical, mind-bending or otherwise amazing that it will radiate cartoon-like waves of energy. Some further crucial information to help you create the graphic gold we’re panning for:

• The design should reflect, suggest, embody, convey or otherwise relate, directly or obliquely, to an election year theme. An election is about choice, and so is Fringe: Audience members have 50 shows to choose from. But the 2012 Fringe will be better than the 2012 presidential election! At Fringe, there’s not a limited choice between two major tickets – the Fringe Festival is the You-Pick-It Ticket. It presents patrons with many shows, which are radically diverse. Festival goers can pick what to see according to their whims, mood and interests, and so create their own Festival experience.

• The design should capture (or at least not contradict) some of the other key characteristics of Chicago Fringe theatre.

• Last year's winning design and runners up can also be seen on the Chicago Fringe website, and for further inspiration, you might look at designs from other Fringe Festivals around the world, such as Adelaide Fringe.

• You can (but are not required to) include the words "Chicago Fringe Festival 2012" as part of your design, but no other text, please. Be bold: the design will appear in whole or in part on CTA ads, print ads and web ads, so it needs to grab people’s attention and hold their interest. In other words, the masks of comedy and tragedy could be part of the winning design – but probably won’t be.

The design size of the file must not exceed 11”x17”. The design can be saved at a resolution that will enable us to zoom in to see details during judging, but the file size must not exceed 2MB. Designs may be in any medium. Multiple submissions are acceptable.

There is no entry fee. Eligibility Everyone worldwide. Prize See your design on CTA ads and Fringe materials distributed all over Chicago! The winner’s design will be the design for the official 2012 Fringe Festival poster and will appear in part or in whole on a wide range of Fringe materials, including ads, tee-shirts, festival programs, pins, banners and more.

The winner’s name will appear on the poster and all other materials on which it is practicable to include an artist credit. The winner will also receive a commemorative Fringe button granting entry to all days of the Festival and two complimentary tickets to one Fringe show of choice.

And as far is it is practicable, the winner will receive copies of all Fringe paraphernalia and merchandise, including a tee-shirt, featuring the design. Three runners-up will have their designs published on chicagofringe.org.<div class="feedflare">

The campaign will focus on the need to expose and counter the tobacco industry's brazen and increasingly aggressive attempts to undermine the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) because of the serious danger they pose to public health.

Tobacco use is one of the leading preventable causes of death. The global tobacco epidemic kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600,000 are people exposed to second-hand smoke. Unless we act, it will kill up to 8 million people by 2030, of which more than 80% will live in low- and middle-income countries.

Last year, Kick Butts, Take Names held its first celebration in observation of the World Health Organization’s "World No Tobacco Day." We call our celebration "World No Tobacco [Abuse] Day" as a reminder that tobacco is neither friend nor The Enemy. We believe it is our disconnection from ourselves and from one another than stands in the way of our freedom.

We are looking for a poster to draw attention to this date again this year, in this spirit. It is important that the poster uses no negative or fear-based images, that it incorporates our heart and fist logo, and that it is a powerful representation of the life-changing, life-saving, buttkicking work of Kick Butts, Take Names, changing the way the world sees and responds to tobacco.

Entrants may gain a greater understanding of our work by searching (and liking) Kick Butts, Take Names and Nicci Tina, the Ambassador of Buttkicking, on Facebook, amazon.com and YouTube. Deadline is 10 May 2012 to allow adequate time for judging, and for exposure of the winning poster prior to the 31 May date.

There is no entry fee. Eligibility All are eligible to enter. Prize There is no money prize. The winner will receive international exposure via our ever-growing community of Facebook friends, and a signed copy of Kick Butts, Take Names, retail value: $25. This will be a labor of love, and buttkicking social change.<div class="feedflare">
