In a way, affiliates focus a lot of their time on the income generating tasks part of their own business.

Affiliates and the company usually go into a partnership with a contract. Affiliate marketers must abide by the rules of the company they are promoting for. Many companies usually have do’s and don’ts as to how an affiliate marketer can promote their product.

Affiliates have to get approved by companies they want to promote for. Some companies are very strict and have a lot of requirements usually in the form of how many people are on an affiliate’s email list, how many page views their website gets, and how big their following count is on their social media. For the most part though, the approval process is very easy for many companies as they just require a sign up. This is a good thing for new and beginning affiliates because they can get approved easily and can start promoting products right away.

How do affiliates get paid?

Affiliate programs usually make affiliates fill out a 1099 form in case they do make over $600 and have to file taxes. Most affiliate programs pay through Paypal or they have their own ewallet program that they use to payout affiliates. Affiliate commissions range from  3% all the way to 100%. Now why would a company pay 100% in commission? They simply can when their upsells bring in a lot of sales that they can pay a full 100% in commission for customer acquisition.

There are some cons to being an affiliate marketer, but it should not stop anyone from pursuing this business model. One of cons is that you don’t own the product or service that you’re promoting. The product or service could very well change or it could even be deleted by the company.

The commission structure could change. An affiliate could be getting paid 60% commission, then all of a sudden the company can decide to drop that commission to 40%. This is a dramatic difference in payout. It’s especially dramatic when it’s the affiliates main product that they promote and make lots of sales with it.

The affiliate program could be wiped out all together. It could be that the company decides that they don’t need affiliates anymore, don’t want to pay affiliates anymore, or they went out of business. There are plenty of reasons that an affiliate program could get wiped out. These problems could be avoided by choosing affiliate programs from trustworthy companies.

How to get started with affiliate marketing?

Now that you know what affiliate marketing is, the first step to getting started with affiliate marketing is by picking a niche. I highly recommend picking a niche that you have interest in because you will be talking about it over and over again. You’ll want to then sign up for affiliate programs to promote.

Most affiliates will use a software like ClickFunnels that can create their landing pages so that they can collect their leads. They’ll also use an email marketing software like ActiveCampaign to keep in contact with their leads so that they eventually turn into customers.

While trying to search for a topic to write about, I happened to do a search on influencer marketing and there was a peak of searches during the pandemic. I guess everyone was trying to figure out ways to make money while we were all locked up at home. Becoming an influencer can be really lucrative if done right. If you’re reading this, then you’re probably curious and want to know how to become an influencer right? Is it too late to become one though? 

What exactly is a social media influencer? An influencer is someone who has built up a following in a particular niche. They are the go to expert and have built influence in this niche. Because they have built up the influence in this niche, brands want to work with them to reach their audience. There are micro and macro influencers. Micro influencers usually have 10,000-50,000 followers. Macro influencers have an extremely large following compared to a micro influencer. Macro influencers also cost thousands of dollars to work with, but don’t worry because plenty of brands love working with micro influencers. Brands can reach many different audiences working with micro influencers instead of blowing that money off on one macro influencer that might not even bring them a lot of sales. Micro influencers are really popular to work with so it is not too late to become an influencer as building a 10,000 following can be done extremely quick, especially on TikTok. TikTok is still a fairly new platform that doesn’t block reach.

Pick your niche

To become an influencer, you must pick your niche first. What do you not mind talking about for days? When I mean days, I really mean days because you will be talking about this topic for a really long time. You’ll be building your business around this niche. You don’t want to confuse your followers so you must talk about the niche until you are credible enough to start branching out to other topics. You will become the go to authority in this niche. You will build influence in this niche. Make sure that this is also a popular niche so that there are plenty of brands to partner with. After all, brands are part of how you will get paid.

Grow your following

You’ll need to grow your following on a social media platform. Focus on one platform that you can master and build influence on. Instagram and YouTube are popular platforms to partner with brands. TikTok has become quite popular and is one of the easiest platforms to go viral because they haven’t regulated reach compared to Instagram.. Brands want influencers to have at least 10,000 followers so this would be the first growth goal if you are thinking about becoming an influencer that makes money. Depending on the platform, you’ll need to have a business account or content creator account. There are other names for these accounts, but basically you need an account that allows brands to run ads on and be able to see your insights or analytics.

Brands begging to send free product

As you build a following, you will start getting brands contacting you to send you a free product in exchange for a shoutout. This is when you know that you have made it. A lot of influencers will gladly accept the free product especially if it is more expensive. Who doesn’t want free products right? The thing with accepting a free product is that it devalues the whole influencer market. Why would brands pay influencers lots of money when they can find many new micro influencers accepting free products?

If you have 10,000 followers and accept the free product that probably only took a few dollars to make, the brand makes huge money savings and profit because of your reach. It would cost them thousands of dollars just to get a reach of 10,000 if they were to do their own advertising. Not only that, your word to your followers is more credible than their word to an unknown market that they are trying to advertise to. You’ve built up your own brand and your followers will naturally agree to what you say making the sales for whatever you are pitching easier. If a brand was trying to target your same followers through an ad, they wouldn’t have the same impact because they are an unknown brand to your followers. It is also harder for brands to target their customers compared to using an influencer. 

Ambassador

Many brands will approach you to become their ambassador. They are hoping that influencers will pitch their products to their following. This is a great opportunity for the brand, but it’s not that great for the influencer, unless the commission is high. Most of the time the commission structure is so low. It is usually 10% commission when one of the followers uses a code. This is really a ton of free advertising for the brand when they would normally be paying thousands in ad spend to get that much reach on their product. However, if the item aligns with your following and you can negotiate with the brand a higher commission rate, then you could very well make a lot of money as an ambassador. It’s even better if your followers know that you use the product every day because then they will want to use it too.

Pitch to brands

Want to start working with your favorite brands? Go ahead and do it. It can be intimidating at first, but you’ll get the hang of it. Brands want to know what you can do for them. It really isn’t about you. It is about how you can help their business. With your pitch, you’ll need to send over your media kit. Your media kit should have your contact information, a little about you, your social media accounts, your following count, your following demographic, your engagement rate, etc. Brands want relevant information that would help them make the decision to work with you. A lot of brands also want the ability to run ads through your social media account so it is also best to have a Facebook page for this. 

Sign up for agencies

One of the best ways to get paid partnerships is through influencer agencies. There are many agencies out there, but they aren’t all equal. Some agencies have a lot of brands that will only pay $25 for a post. Please do not work with these brands. You’ve worked so hard to build your following and this would be a disservice. With the influencer marketing agency, you are able to bid on projects as well as be found by branding managers. My two favorite agencies are Izea and Popular Pays. Working with a brand is not just limited to one post. There could be a whole campaign around a product that you will have to do. Sometimes brands will use an influencer’s account to run ads on Facebook and Instagram. Have you ever seen where your favorite influencer is running an ad about a brand? It’s not your favorite influencer running the ad, it’s the brand running the ad through your favorite influencer’s account through Facebook Business Manager. Make sure you charge a good amount of money for doing this.

Build a blog

While building a following is great, a blog can get even more partnership work with brands. A blog is also a medium that you control, unlike a social media account. A social media account could get wiped out or the servers could go down like it often does. It’s really easy for it to just disappear and unfortunate if it does happen because of all the time spent on building it. With a blog, you have full control of what content you can post. The best part is that your content could circulate all around the internet and can be found through a Google search. A blog also allows you to generate more income from other sources rather than just relying on paid partnership with a brand. Check out this article on how to start a blog that makes money.

Build an email list

Building an email list should be the first step in any business. Especially if you are selling things online. If your social media and blog ever goes down, there is always an email list that allows you to keep in contact with your subscribers. The good thing about email lists is that the person has to go through a series of steps to actually give you their email compared to social media where they are just hitting the follow button. There are many email marketing companies out there, but my favorite one is Active Campaign because they have amazing automation sequences. Leverage affiliate marketing

While working with brands is great, it also involves waiting around for them to come to you or you approaching them with a pitch, affiliate marketing is a lot easier and you can start making money as soon as possible. All it requires is an approval from a company to become their affiliate. Then you can start making commission for selling their product. Amazon is one of the biggest affiliate programs and it is called Amazon Associates. Ever wonder how YouTubers make money? Plenty of them are affiliates for Amazon. Amazon’s commission structure is very small though. It’s about 3% or less per sale. Other companies have 10%, 15%, and 25% commission. There are even others that pay as much as 50% or even higher in commission. It takes the same effort selling something for $10 as it does selling something for $1000. Sell your own thing

If you’ve built such a big influence, why not sell your own thing? A great example of this would be Kylie Jenner with her makeup brand. Why wait for others to pay you to promote your brand when you can promote your own brand and make all the profit? There are so many products you could private label in your niche. You can create and launch a course. You can sell tshirts. You can also dropship where you don’t have to buy the product and it ships directly from the seller. You could even sell on Amazon. There are so many ways you can leverage selling your own product all from the comfort of your own home. Which one would you like to do?

Most influencers will make money through brand partnerships. Why only stop there though? Brand partnerships are an active form of income. If you want to build a business that has passive income, then it’s best to implement the other sources of income generation too. Why wouldn’t you want to leverage your influence into other income generating things?

The cashflow quadrants

In the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, Kiyosaki has built a graph with four quadrants. The four quadrants are employed, self-employed, business owner, and investors. On the left side are the employed and self-employed while the right side are the business owners and investors. The left side is known to be exchanging their time for money while the right side is known to let their money or business work for them. If you’re going to be on the left side, why work so hard to be self-employed when you can just be employed and be guaranteed a wage, health benefits, and 401k benefits right? The right side is where we all want to be if we want to attain a life of freedom.

Now I used to do graphic design and wedding photography. Art and design is my forte, but I began to hate it because I had to keep exchanging my time for money. Rather than having more time to myself because I thought I owned a “business”, I was losing a lot of time. It soon became tedious and I started to hate it. If I knew what I knew now, I could have turned that self-employment into a business that generates different income streams, not just an income stream where I am exchanging my service for money.

There are several income streams, but there are two most common income streams that you can generate. One of the two income streams is active income where you are exchanging your time or service for money. The other income stream is passive where you can create it or build it once and keep generating income from it.

Active & passive income streams

Active income stream is very common. A workplace usually pays their employees for the time they put in. If you don’t go to work, then you don’t get paid. A self-employed person usually provides a service in which they get paid once the job is completed. An example of this would be a graphic designer creating a package design for a company. Each design is always custom and will always need time to get the work done in order to get paid.

We will use a graphic designer from above in the next scenario for building passive income. In order for a graphic designer to make passive income, he or she must create a done for you design that they can sell to the masses. They can sell these done for your products on marketplaces like Etsy or Creative Market. They can also create a course teaching people how to design, and they can sell this course in masses. The point of passive income is that it can be built once and continue to create income passively.

Other types of income streams

Other types of income streams include high-ticket sales and residual income.

High-ticket sales are usually products or services that are over $1,000. If you’re going to be doing active income generating activities, you might as well make them high-ticket right? The premise is that the marketing and sales efforts that go into selling something that is high-ticket is the same as a low-ticket item. High-ticket can also be passive. You just have to sell something that is high in price that you’ve created once. A good example of this would be a course.

Residual income is an income type that keeps coming. It could be active income or passive income. Residual income is usually subscription based. Using a graphic designer example from above, the graphic designer could provide monthly social media graphic templates. They can sell these monthly social media graphic templates to the masses. They would only have to create one set a month and give it to all their paid subscribers. Because social media graphics have to be created once a month, this would not be a form of passive income.

However, there are residual income that are passive such as car insurance, and health insurance. You keep paying for these memberships. Another example of passive residual income is multi-level marketing. Multi-level marketing company handles the shipping of the products to your customers monthly for you so you don’t have to spend time on that at all. MLM also pays out team bonuses that are just residual and purely passive. Like MLM, affiliate marketing also has subscription-based products that can build passive residual income for you.

How to build passive income streams online

There are many people skeptical when it comes to passive income. Can it really be done? Absolutely! It can be done in any business model and industry. As mentioned above, you just have to create your product once in order to make the passive sales.

Now if you have a tangible product, you can somewhat make the process passive for yourself by hiring people to do the fulfillment for you. Your product is already made from your supplier, so there is not much work for you to do there. Someone just needs to press a button every time an order is made to fulfill the order. There are places like Amazon that does it all for you. You just have to list your products on their site or hire someone to do it for you. Evergreen Marketing

Evergreen marketing is a type of marketing that is always around, similar to evergreen trees that always have their leaves. Evergreen marketing isn’t like social media because with social media, you are constantly posting to beat the algorithm. With evergreen marketing, people do a search on Google, and they can find you. People aren’t looking to be sold to on social media. They are there to be social. Google is used to find a solution to a problem.

Blogs

Blogs are found on Google. People are usually searching for solutions to their problems, and if you happen to have a blog article with the correct keywords then your blog will pop up on Google. Blog articles are something you do once, and they are forever on the internet. These blog articles can direct people to the product that is being sold with potential to make passive sales. YouTube

Like blogs, YouTube is owned by Google and will pop up at the top of Google when someone is searching for a solution to their problem. We use Google to gain more info about a particular topic. We also do the same with YouTube. YouTube is hitting two birds with one stone in that someone can search on Google and find the YouTube video or someone can search on YouTube and find the YouTube video. These YouTube videos are always around and can make sales passively because it is another form of evergreen marketing. It’s a great marketing tool as people can really get to know you and your brand authentically as they can see you.

Both blogging and YouTube can also generate income by having Google Ads on these platforms.

Ads

Running ads to your products is another way to build passive income. By running ads, you have full control of who sees your ads and how often. You are able to easily scale your income by just increasing ad spend. If you make a dollar profit from each dollar you spend, that scenarios is already a million dollar scenario.  Russell Brunson, creator of ClickFunnels always says “whoever can spend the most money to acquire a customer wins.” Successful ads are built on sales funnels. Sales funnels usually guide a customer through a series of web pages that have upsells and downsells. It is said that a confused mind never buys and that is why a sales funnel works so well. There is no confusion in a sales funnel. The customer is presented with a product, they either want it or not and depending on the answer they are given and upsell for saying yes to the product or a downsell for saying no to the product. If a page was thrown together with multiple items to buy, chances are the customer gets confused and buys nothing because of an indecisive mind. You can read more about sales funnels here.

So what exactly do you need to do with all this information? Well, you simply can start implementing a little at a time. Welcome to Network Marketing

This is the type of business where consumers could sign-up as distributors of the products of a certain MLM company for a certain amount of investment. They could start to run their own business using the system of the company they chose to join.

In addition to the mark-up that they will earn for the products that they could sell, they will also earn residual income, depending on the benefits given by the company.

This type of business is called network marketing, multi-level marketing, or referral marketing.

Besides the selling of products, this also involves recruiting people to do the business. Members would get referral commissions for every member that they could recruit. The recruiters are called uplines and the recruits are called downlines.

This is why network marketing or multi-level marketing acquired a bad reputation and sometimes referred to as a pyramid scheme, even though it is not.

The company expands through the efforts of all the members. Much of the marketing is done by the members.

Despite its bad reputation, network marketing has its benefits.

1. It’s less risky.

Unlike when you start a traditional business where you need to set-up a brick and mortar store with all the documents and paper works you need to do to register it as a legitimate business, starting with network marketing, whose products you love to use, entails only a small amount of capital.

Many network marketing companies offer quality products that have great demands for them.

3. Residual income

In addition to the income that comes from direct selling, network marketing offers residual income also to all the members. You get additional income for every successful referral.

The potential for earnings is high depending on how much effort you give to the business. Through a residual income, you will have the chance to reach the dream life you had always imagined.

How do network marketers get leads?

In previous years, when there was no social media, getting leads and making sales was a hard part of network marketing. Here are some of the marketing strategies that you were told to do.

1. The first thing you need to do after signing-up is to list at least a hundred people, more is better, and call them one by one and invite them to attend the business presentation.

Of course, not all will come. You will be lucky to see one or two of your invites come to the orientation. To pacify and keep your morale high, they will always tell you that you’ll receive a lot of rejections in this line of business.

2. Those who came will not decide at once to buy the product or sign-up. You have to do some follow-ups with them until they finally buy and if you’re lucky enough, one or two will sign and do the business as well. They will be your downlines.

3. After you have exhausted your first list of at least a hundred people, you need to think again of another batch for you to invite. You need to also help your downlines if any, to get members under their name. They’re going to do what you did also, prospect all the people they know. The cycle goes on and on.

At this point, you might be already thinking if this is worth keeping.

Help from social media

This old way of recruiting people has been somewhat made easy by social media. But, it still needs a lot of tasks to gain mileage.

You can now reach more people, through Facebook and Instagram, but you need to post several times or at least once a day on social media platforms. Your friends could now see what you’re up to lately. If they become interested, they’re now the ones who will message you and ask you about your business.

This somehow lessens the hardship of inviting and talking to people one by one. But the postings that you need to do several times a day or at least once a day could be tedious and time-consuming.

There’s hope in multi-level marketing

When you’re already losing hope if you’re gonna continue with your internet marketing business, don’t give up yet. Today, you can promote your business online using automated tools.

Now, it’s easier to make sales and grow your team without sending friend requests and messages every day.

Internet marketing

Through the internet and social media, you can automate the marketing of your business. No more direct prospecting, no more rejection from people you know, and acquaintances. You can have a wider reach of your target market with online automation.

You’ll be able to scale up your network marketing business without having to post several times a day on social media. This will give you back your time and freedom to do other things that you love to do.

Difference between passive and active marketing

Blogs, videos, and SEO are methods used in doing passive marketing. This is how your business or products can be found online. Without directly messaging certain persons to look for your posts, you will be found by anybody looking for answers to their questions. This would happen repeatedly even after years of posting your content. Your blogs and videos will be available as long as there is the internet.

On the other hand, active marketing is when you do postings to social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram multiple times a day for your products to be visible on your friends’ feeds. This type of marketing is quite burdensome because it takes a lot of time and effort to post and produce content you’ll upload in social media. Also, people who look for solutions to their problems don’t turn to social media.

Traffic sources

When you do the marketing of your business online, there are three different types of traffic sources. This is how to get more leads.

1. Traffic you don’t control

When you post on Facebook, not all of your friends can see all of your posts. Facebook has its own algorithm that controls what would appear in each of your friends’ Facebook walls. The same with website visitors. If a website is not on the first page, the chance of getting visitors on your site is slim.

Depending on the algorithm and SEO of each platform, you don’t have control over the number of visitors who would see and click your content.

2. Traffic you control

When you do Facebook, Instagram, and Google ads, it’s where you will have control over the traffic to your page or site. You will be able to set your target market. Your post would be shown to many more people unlike when your post is free.

But, this will all depend on the amount of money you are willing to spend on advertisements.

3. Traffic you own

The traffic you own is your email list. These are the emails that you have collected in exchange for some freebies that you’re giving away for every reader who visited your site.

When you have an email list, you can market to all the people who have subscribed to your list, whenever you want, and for years. You can email them as often as you want regarding the products that you are selling. 

But, for the majority of the readers, the decision to buy does not come immediately. That’s why you need their emails. This is the way you can get their trust by sending them information that could help them with their problems. The fact that they decided to join your email list, they saw something useful to them. It’s up to you how you could upgrade their trust and convert them into buying customers.

Sales funnels

Sales funnels also called a revenue funnel or sales process is a series of processes or steps that lead your audience with the decision to buy your products.

Here are the stages of a sales funnel with the acronym AIDA – Awareness, Interest, Decision, and Action.

• Awareness

This is the first time people become aware of your products. This could be because of your posts on social media, blogs, videos, or through word of mouth.

• Interest

This is when a website visitor, after reading or seeing your contents, becomes interested in what you are offering, like the free ebook, or free training and decides to subscribe in the opt-in form, where email addresses are being collected.

That is why your social media posts, blogs, or videos should be relevant enough to get the attention of your readers and read further about your products.

• Decision

This is the time when a customer is ready to buy. Affecting a buyer’s decision will all depend on the kind of marketing you did from the time that person subscribed to your email list.

In this process, you need to be more creative. Offer more than what your competitors are giving. It could be free shipping, discount, promo packages, or giving additional products as a bonus. Make your offer so appealing that they can’t resist and would take advantage of it.

• Action

When the customer finally bought from you, it is not the end of your relationship with that customer. Your next action should be how to keep them and become a repeat customer.

After the purchase, send a thank you email to your customer for trying the product. Offer him after sales service and request feedback.

There are two types of sales funnels. There is a backend sales funnel and a front end sales funnel.

A front end sales funnel is a series of web pages that usually collect and email address as well as make sales and upsells. Sales funnels can be created on ClickFunnels if you do not have an existing website already or with Thrive Themes if you already have a WordPress website. Sales funnels are always paired with an email marketing platform like ActiveCampaign. The email part of a sales funnel tends to be the backend of the funnel.

3 Types of offline marketing that you can automate online

Bridge Funnel or 3-way call

This method is the one wherein your upline helps you demonstrate the product or the business side of your network marketing business to one of your prospects.

Here’s how it will look like when it is automated:

This funnel requires only 2 pages.

The first page is about the desire and the pain your visitors would want to get rid of. You’ll create a form on the first page, where you’ll collect the email addresses of your readers. After this, they will be directed to the second page.

The second page contains a video that you will make with the so-called Epiphany Bridge script.  Epiphany is telling your own story about how you became interested in the product you are selling. What and how did you feel the first time you saw the products and the business opportunity. You have to show the readers your sincerity to earn their trust.

Include also in the video, how to fill up the order form so they won’t be confused when they are directed to the company’s sales page.

From this page, you need to place a call-to-action button (CTA) where your readers would click and be directed to the website of your network marketing company. When your readers click your link and at the same time register to avail of the products or the business, they would be listed under your name.

Home party selling funnel

With the help of your upline, you are going to present your products and business to a group of people.

In this type of presentation, many of the attendees decide to buy your products, some could also end up signing with the company and would like to do the business also. Being in a big group, everybody seems to be excited where the FOMO attitude “fear of missing out” was in the air.

This is how it will look when automated:

The Home Party Funnel consists of the following pages:

• First page – The Party Invite Page

Just like the Bridge Funnel, the first page would be the welcome page where you have a great headline that would entice your readers to sign-up and give their email addresses.

• Second Page – The Confirmation Ticket Page

After signing-up by giving their email addresses, the readers would be directed to the next page where it would confirm their attendance to the event.

• Third Page – The Party Hang-out Page

This page contains three sections.

• First section –  contains the headline, date, and the time of event.

• Second section – will be the live stream where the event would take place

• Third section – would include the images of the featured products and buttons where they could order and join the opportunity.

What you do in the Home Party Funnel is just the same as you would do offline. This is a live stream of the usual orientation or a pre recorded event..

But, before the event proper, since you have the email list, you can remind them through sending emails about the party that they joined in. This could also be automated with the help of ActiveCampaign.

The coaching and consulting industry has become a very popular and lucrative way to monetize a blog or business. Simply put it that you are ahead of many people, and you can simply coach or consult them from your experiences.

Coaching and consulting are often intertwined online, though these two are very different from each other. A consultant is someone who can go in and tell you what to do.
