Generally, PSD, JPEG, GIF format raster image files are converted to EPS, Ai, PDF format vector image. The quality of a raster image is not good enough. What is image tracing?

In computer graphics, image tracing means the conversion of raster graphics into vector graphics.

A photo technically has no specific physical structure. An image is a composition of marks on paper, grains in film or pixels in the bitmap. This image is useful, but it has some limitation too. If the image is magnified or enlarged, The halftone dots, film grains and pixels become apparent unexpectedly. Sharp edges of such images look fuzzy and unclear.

On the other hand, a vector image does not have the same problem. Edges are represented in the form of mathematical lines or curves, and they can be magnified thousands of times .

The task in vectorization is to convert a 2D image into a 3D image. Live portraits are not suitable for vectorization. Methods and the art of using elements in a design is up to a designer’s wish. The techniques and combinational application of these elements, resulting, compositions bring out the final
look and feel of the creation or art on any surface, irrespective of the material used. Such main primary design elements are explained bellow.

Balance:
Means the equal distribution of objects, color, texture and space in a design. When a design is well balances, we feel the stability of the left, right and center of the picture.

Symmetrical
In such designs or arts are equally and perfectly balanced towards the left and right sides. If you happen to fold such a picture into two, both sides would be similar to mirror images.
Asymmetrical
In these arts and designs although there is somewhat of balance, it is not a perfect balance, the deviation may be of closure, shading, size, distance…etc.

Movement
Movement makes our eyes move when we look at an art or design. Movement creates eye travel within an art by harmonizing unity. The techniques of repetition, rhythm and action can be used to achieve this impression.

Movement via action
Action can create movement. We are forced to imply and achieve the feeling of action in 2Ddesigns and arts. A painting can create life only by implying action within the work of art. One may use movements, size, shades and colors, distances to achieve the final impression.

Repetition
Similar colors, shapes, designs, lines which are repeated to make a pattern or an artwork

Rhythm

Simplicity

Contrast
The one and only irregular or highlighted item, stands out from the rest of the contents of the designed artwork. This can be shown by color, size, scale differences.

Proportion & Scale

All sizes of items should be according to a scale or a gauge against the natural sizes of a landscape or any other item or any living thing. Otherwise the elements in a picture would be out of proportion and look abnormal as per the given pictures bellow.

Harmony
Means perfect agreement between all elements and parts of a design or an art, bringing in balance, peace, blending in the picture. Nothing stands out and nothing is left out.

Unity
Unity Is the relationship among the elements of a visual that helps all the elements functioning together. Unity is when the elements in a space combine to make a balanced, harmonies complete Whole. The space feels right and everything works together. The result is a pleasing feeling, that everything is right with the final look and feel. Unity of design is planned and controlled by an artist.

Gestalt
Gestalt is a psychology term which means ‘Unified Whole’. It refers to theories of ‘Visual perception’ developed by German psychologist in the 1920s.These theories attend to describe how people tend to organize visual elements into groups or unified Wholes when certain principles are applied.
The eye differentiates an object from its surrounding area. A form or shape is naturally perceived as FIGURE (object), while the surrounding area is perceived as GROUND (background).

The one on the left is seen as a whole room. The one on the right is split into it’s parts.

Gestalt means when parts taken individually connects to the whole.

Balancing figure (fore ground) and ground (Back ground) can make the understanding of an image clearer.

Similarity
In these pictures or designs you find objects or sub-object groups that have the same characteristics, as shown below. The first picture has similar leaves with similar lines and shapes, the second has similar shapes of a fish which makes an entirely different pattern when put together.

Dissimilar
In the midst of many items or objects, one object is different to all others, thereby attracting the focus on to it. This difference can be gained by using color, size, shape, distance, angle etc.

Proximity
This impression is given by putting the objects or elements close together. It gives the feeling of a group or one object altogether. In proximity, all objects need not be similar, they may be different to each other.

Closure
Closure can be implied by indicating enough of the space being enclosed. The balance incomplete o open area is easily completed visually by the mind of the observer.

Continuity
Makes the eye go from one object to another, by guiding the visual track through lines or curves or waves etc.

This process starts with general instructions and ends up with specific details. The idea in the mind becomes a visual which is real.

Design Visuals :
A design uses a visual language or method.

Design Elements :
Design elements are interconnected ‘parts’ or ‘blocks’ which are used to complete a design, as per the real world’s objects. Even the real world – real objects are made of these parts or blocks.

01)Line

The basic primary element of any design is the ‘Line’.

Lines may be different in many ways as: direction, shape (wavy, straight, curved…), continuity (dotted. contentious), thickness (pen, brush..), effect (clear, blurred), shading, brightness… many more. Lines can be used to inter-match objects, to bring unity and to produce final effects on images within a design. Lines can finally help to see through and around a design.

Line–Characteristics

All lines have their own characteristics and features: they are ;

width (thick, thin, uneven)
length (long, short, continuous, broken)
directions (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curving, perpendicular, oblique, parallel, radial zigzag)
focus (sharp, blurry, fuzzy, choppy)
feelings (sharp, jagged, graceful, smooth)

Line Design -Mood & feelings :

Lines can also used to express moods or feelings. They can express many human feelings of some are ; Sad, Happy, Angry, Painful, Quiet, Free, Worried, Confident, Nervous, excited, board, calm, frightened, graceful, peaceful, active….etc.

Line - Expressive Quality

Lines have their own power of expression. This is achieved by drawing the lines in different ways.

Bold lines - strength, power, stability, might
Branched lines – unity, strength, focus
Curved lines- happiness, harmony, peace, tranquility
Dark Slashing lines – aggression, anger, rage
Dark heavy lines – confidence, boldness
Diagonal Lines – rhythm, movement, harmony
Fuzzy lines- soft, gentle, relaxed
Vertical lines – stability, strength , power

Line – Types

Actual Lines: These are psychically present. The real basic lines, that create, form & space, shapes, contour, space in a picture. These arts have actual visible lines.
Implied Lines: These lines are really not there in the picture or an art work, but it is felt like being present.
Psychic Lines : These designs/pictures imply lines or directions which are really not drawn, but are felt. In the following picture there two gentlemen in black coats, who we feel are looking at each other, but if we observe closely, they are only looking at the same direction, and not at each other

Lines Directions

Horizontal Lines: These lines are parallel to the horizon. They align to the face of earth always. They show calm, peaceful, quiet, relaxed and comfortable environments. These lines never join or cross path.
Vertical Line: These lines are always 90^ofrom the horizon, going right up to the sky. They show future energy, if they happen to fall down. Can convey stability and strength.
Diagonal Lines: These lines are at an angle, giving impression of rising and falling effects. Can suggest directions and movements and angles. They can create feelings of rising, falling, action, motion, tension, excitement, slow/fast actions.

Contour & Gesture Lines

Contour drawings are used to show outlines and shapes. Gesture lines are used to show movements(angles), weights and postures

02) Shapes

Shapes are two dimensional including width, height and coverage, but does not include depth. These are closed shapes with enclosed areas.

Types of Shapes

Geometrical shapes : These are man made artificial shapes which are shown by types of houses, types of buildings, types of items, utilities, equipment…etc.
Organic shapes :These are taken from the natural sources of the universe. Stones, trees, flowers, leaves, sea weeds/ animals/plants/shells, fruits…etc.
Positive Shapes : Shows solid strength and long lasting features.
Negative shapes :These show the space around the positive space.
Static shapes& Dynamic shapes :Static means shapes which are stable and non-moving, Dynamic means shapes which are moving and active.

03) Form

A form can show a three dimensional view. It consists width, height and depth, forming 3D Views. It gives a feeling of a real object/picture.

04) Value

Is the lightness or darkness of a line, shape or form. It can be within the ranges of Black and White covering all value ranges in-between. The application of value to an art can be simply called as ‘shading’.

05)Texture

Means the quality of the surface. How you may feel or appear to feel. When you touch and really feel the surface it’s called ‘actual texture’ . If look at a surface and get a feeling or understanding of it without touching, it’s called ‘implied texture’

06) Space

Is the illusion depth or space on a flat surface of a picture or artwork. Space brings the real natural 3D look to the object or artwork on a 2D page. It can show closeness, far away-ness, above, bellow feelings which are directly connected to space. Indirect effects to create space can be size value, placement position, overlapping, details, color combinations, shading and linear concept within the object/drawing.

Today, everything is becoming digital. Computers, cameras, CDs, digital clocks, and so on. And many more. Even the mobile phone, which is now a necessity, incorporates digital techniques, bringing social media and WEB access to the end user's fingertips.

Digital equipment

Digital electronic technology can store, retrieve and communicate data and information in form of ‘0’ and ‘1’ which are binary numbers, letters or icons. ‘0’ defines a positive state and ‘1’ defines a negative state. Data is represented as strings of ‘0’s and ‘1’s, which are coded transmitted and decoded at communication activities.

Types of Computer Graphics

Vector graphics

Are made of graphic objects or a collection of graphic objects. They have geometrical aspects such as points, lines and curves. These are called ‘Primitives’. Each and every object can be edited separately. The storage requirements of vector graphics are minimal. When resized, these graphics do not lose their quality.

They can be images, logos, CD covers, CD stickers, Business cards, File covers, Book cover designs and many more. Tools which can design vector graphics are, CorelDraw, ADOBE Freehand, In-Design.

Raster Graphics (bitmaps)

These graphics are made of tiny parts of pixels. The computer stores details of every single pixel in an image. Due to this, the file storage size becomes larger than a vector storage size. Pixels may be in many colors, which may or may-not have effects and shadows. They are called ‘Bitmap graphics or Raster Images’. The quality of these pictures is managed by the resolution and density of the pixels.

What is better Vector or Raster

The suitability of each type of image depends on the requirement and the purpose of the job. Therefore it is the decision of the graphic designer, to choose the proper tool for the respective task or job.

Resolution : No. of pixels in each slide. (64_Px X 80 _PX)
Dimensions :Display or print dimension (4^inch X 6^inch)
Depth : Bit Depth (1Bit, 8bit, 24bit, 32bit)
Colour Mode: Bitmap, Gray Scale, RGB, CMYK

Resolution

The number of Pixel dots per inch gives the resolution. The above picture shows how the design becomes clearer when the resolution increases. The more number of pixels per inch produces better and sharper images. Lesser amounts of pixels per inch may show ‘jagged/blurred’ image edges.

Dimensions

Images can have many dimensions, as per the designer’s wish or the user’s wish or a particular standard.

Bit Depth

Is called pixel/color information/bit depth in an image. If the bit depth is high, it can store more color. I Bit images can store only Black & White. The more the bits are such as 2 /4/8/24 bits, the clearer and sharper the image and the colors are.

Color modes

Gray Scale : Made of all shades of Gray

RGB : Done via projecting lights of Red, Green and Blue

CMYK : Done via Inks of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black
