Rain gardens combine form and function

Each time it rains, large quantities water flows off impermeable surfaces such as roofs, driveways and patios. On its way to nearest storm drain, it collects garden chemicals, oils, dirt and bacteria which in many cases end up directly in nearby rivers or other bodies of water. These chemicals can have a devastating effect on the organisms, fish and wildlife that call the river home. Rain gardens can prevent some of this water from reaching the storm drain in the first place, creating healthier waterways.

A rain garden is nothing like a water garden, pond or wetland, in fact the majority of the time it’s dry. Planted in a small depression, the garden contains native shrubs, perennials and flowers and is most often found on a natural slope. The garden only holds water for a short period of time during and immediately after it rains. The advantage of a rain garden is that it allows the collection of rainwater so that it can slowly percolate into the ground, recharging underground aquifers. The gardens have been proven effective at removing 90 per cent of chemicals from rainwater runoff and up to 80 per cent of sediments, neither of which we want flowing into our rivers and streams.

GRAVEL-LOK Updated Coverage Rates – MIX method

October 2012

We are no longer recommending 16 oz. liquid : 5 gallon bucket of stones

It works in some cases, depending on the cleanliness and size of the stone, but using 18 oz. is better for a wider variety of scenarios.

Rare cases: if somebody is using stones which are really small, 1/8” then we recommend using 20 oz. : 5 gallon bucket of stones. The smaller the stone, the more surface area of stones to cover.

ADA Compliance would need stones which are 1/8” up to 1/2” to create a smoother pavement for wheelchairs.

FOR MOST CASES…..

1/4” up to 1/2” for pavements (and this includes 3/8”) should be mixed at 18 oz. liquid : 5 gallon bucket of stones

At 1” thick: 210 sf/5 gallon container (USE ONLY ON CONCRETE LAY OVERS)

At 1.5” thick: 140 sf / 5 gallon container

At 2.0” thick: 105 sf/5 gallon container

If they are using 1/8” size stone then you should use 20 oz. liquid : 5 gallon bucket of stones.

At 1” thick: 180 sf / 5 gallon container

At 1.5” thick: 120 sf/5 gallon container

At 2.0” thick: 90 sf / 5 gallon container

Here's a little clean up tip for you...

There is a product on the market called Zip-Strip which is a paint and finish remover. We have found that it works well to get cured Gravel-Lok off of concrete, flagstone, etc. when used with a wire brush. You can purchase online at Amazon.com or at Ace Hardware and other fine retailers.

Recycled glass in different colors combined with the Gravel-Lok aggregate bonding system to create the look of a water stream.

"We worked really hard on this project. It was a tricky one because it had to pass muster with conservation people as well as the homeowner. All the plants are wetland natives and the hardscape had to include an outdoor shower, fire area and seating/dining. The hardscape is also seen from a roof deck and is this is an ocean property. The "water" looking storm water feature needed to function as well as look like it belonged in this ocean and wetland abutting home. The "glass stream" functions and looks wave-like,especially because the hardscape drops 7 inches and terminates at the outdoor shower." - Ida Wye Designs
