Websites are often left untouched as resources are redirected to daunting projects with rapidly approaching deadlines.

Liz’s ten top areas where hospital marketers should focus is right on target. We would also add that a strong, internal and external, web-base communication strategy will go a long way in making each of these items successful initiatives.

Identify the most commonly asked questions from patients calling your office. Consider turning each of these questions, along with a helpful answer and explanation, into a blog post.

Take a look at what patient education pieces you have around your office. Helpful tips on how patients should care for themselves or other resources you recommend can be re-worked into short blog posts. Consider providing some insight into WHY these health tips are important. Encourage people to call and make an appointment if they have more questions.

Physicians have CVs and a lot of years of training. Your patients ‘expect’ this. What they may not expect is to read why you became a doctor and to learn about why you chose your area of expertise. Personal stories are a great way to make a connection with your patients. Even more interesting are short video clips of you and your team speaking directly to the viewer. These short messages do not need to be any longer than one minute.

Pharmaceutical companies also have great patient education materials you can refer to and they may even have interactive content like videos or photos you can use to make your blog posts more interactive.

Time to get blogging!
</a10:content>

<a10:author><a10:name> </a10:name></a10:author>

Health Literacy: Is your website bad for your patients’ health?

In article in the Washington Post last week highlighted a topic we’re beginning to hear more about: health literacy. Specifically, the LACK of health literacy among the American public. The article recounts examples of patients who misunderstood their doctors’ instructions, causing additional complications to their health.

Organizations like the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Joint Commission are now evaluating and rating health care organizations ability to communicate with their patients. It is no surprise that websites, social media and mobile technology will fall soon within this scrutiny as well, especially given the role that these tools play in health care communication strategies.

At GWT, we work with our health care clients to make sure their web-based communication strategies reach their target consumers. And while we rely on our clients to provide the content for their websites, we provide counsel to them on ways to improve their copy for SEO purposes. The Washington Post article highlights that health literacy is another area we need to help our clients pay attention to: Is the content easy to understand? Is there too much clinical or technical language? Are medical terms defined, are their more succinct ways to explain complex terminology? Can our clients use tools like videos or pod casts to better explain specific diseases or conditions? Is there an easy way for users to make contact with someone at the health care organization if they have questions?

A web-based communication plan is the back bone of a successful health care organization marketing plan. It is certainly important that your website or your mobile site is well designed and pleasing from a design point of view, but have you looked at the content of your site through the eyes of your patients? Is the information on your site easy to understand? How can you improve the health care literacy of your patients using your website? You never know—it just may be good for someone’s health. Health care industry expert Jenn Riggle, in her FierceMobileHealthcare post this week, reminds hospitals that their websites are now mobile. So now, in addition to “feeding” it with new content and timely updates, you should also be “kicking the tires” and “checking the oil” so-to-speak. Your website, my friend, is on the road!

Make time to give your website a “test drive” on a mobile device or two. Is your website mobile friendly? Is it hard to navigate or does it take a while to download? Do you have information on your site organized so that phone numbers and driving directions are easy for a mobile user to find quickly? Are you taking advantage of texting messaging to drive traffic to your events, your facilities and your web site? Can mobile users find your blog posts, your videos, and your Facebook page?

At GWT our mobile sites can be developed to be managed in tandem with a live website so that edits and updates can be carried over from the main site to the mobile site. Our mobile sites are designed so that users will find quick links to social sites, touch to dial numbers and driving directions easily. If mobile users want, they can also click over to the main website to look for more in depth service line information. ALL this within a few clicks.

So, is your mobile hospital website ready roll??????
</a10:content>

<a10:author><a10:name> </a10:name></a10:author>

Health Care Providers, Hospitals, Need Social Media Warning

From time to time we come across health care groups that are clearly struggling to understand the digital space and how powerful social media has become. So, in the spirit of all those warnings that accompany health-related advertisements, we think that social media needs a warning, too!

Hospitals, clinics, doctors, medical providers should be warned: A lack of a social media strategy can be harmful to the health of your brand.

We think the warning should be accompanied by these excellent points posted on Bloomberg Business Week by C. Edward Brice:

1. Believing that if you build it, they will come. Just because you brand a Facebook page, YouTube channel, Twitter feed, or blog does not mean that you are using social media.

2. Not being authentic. You will soon be sniffed out if all you’re doing is using social media tools to promote your one-sided message and make sales.

3. Thinking you are in control. If you think you can control negative comments on your blog or other avenues, you will soon learn that you can’t.

4. Not listening. Social media is about open, two-way dialogue that entails both giving and sharing.

5. Thinking social media is not work. Social media is the most unscalable tactic there is in digital media. It takes a human being on the other end of the channel to engage and converse.

6. Not knowing your audience. Lacking an understanding of what your audience is passionate about or wants to engage in will result in a poor experience both for you and your audience.

You’ve been warned! We’re here to help—see your GWT provider, ahem, account exec, today!
</a10:content>

<a10:author><a10:name> </a10:name></a10:author>

NeuroTexas Institute Launches Research Site

Our friends at the NeuroTexas Institute recently completed their second website project with us.

This site is similar to the main NTI site in terms of the look, feel and brand standards found across all of St. David’s HealthCare’s web properties. It was designed with growth in mind, so that as more research programs are added, the site can also expand. Sitefinity Is the perfect platform for a site like this to be built. As the NTI Research programs expand, they easily add to the information posted on the site, include pictures and videos, and have an impressive web-based way to share their research finds with the world.

The site launches just in time for Neurosurgery Outreach Month (August 1-31).

Case in point is Marianne’s frustration with not being able to email her new PCP. She, like so many busy- with-life-do-as-much-as-possible-on-line kind of people, wants to be able to communicate via email with her doctor. Her anecdotal experience is now supported by a study done by Kaiser Permanente (published in Health Affairs )and reported on by James Carroll for HealthLeaders .

The study gives credence to Aiello’s gripe: Doctors who email with patients may improve the quality of care provided and we venture to guess that healthier patients are happier patients. Marianne Aiello says: “…if healthcare can learn anything from other industries, it's that consumers don't want to spend time on the phone looking for information—especially when they can find what they're looking for in a couple of clicks.” (Note she doesn’t even mention flipping through the yellow pages. See our previous post on June 23rd.)

So if you’re a physician grappling with whether you need a website for your patients to find you, we say unequivocally: “DO IT NOW!” With physician shortages in the news in some major cities, reimbursement being tied to satisfaction and other variables looming on the horizon, a solid web-based presence and a strategy to make it work for you is worth your time now. Your patients are on-line waiting to hear from you.</a10:content>

<a10:author><a10:name> </a10:name></a10:author>

Health Care Apps

With mobile technology becoming what consumers rely on more and more, it has been fun to watch the health care related mobile apps take on a life of their own. What we CAN suggest is that spending the time to develop a well-rounded on-line marketing strategy with tactics and initiatives to increase your search exposure, keep the content on your site new and interesting, and investing in a mobile version of your site are all things that won’t end up getting a swift kick into the recycling bin.

So as you build your marketing plan, and ogle the dollars being sent to one (or more???) of your local phone directory companies, why not consider how your website might serve you better than static yellow pages:

Search Engine Optimization. Let us help you zero in on the best way for your customers to find you—instead of picking where you will be listed once per year, why not be sure to be where your customers are looking for you.

Mobile Site. No need for a phone book or directory assistance! Get your phone numbers, maps and directions and other important information in front of your consumers who are on-the-go and looking for you from their smart phones.

Speaking of maps. When you add, move or close locations, a printed map in the yellow pages immediately becomes a useless tool. Why not give your consumers the most current snap shot of where your locations are and provide driving directions to boot!

Measurement. Other than measuring how thick the yellow pages are, can you really measure how many people see your ad? Website traffic and pay-per-click campaigns not only deliver a call to action, they can be tracked! You will know exactly how effective your on-line marketing tactics are by reviewing the analytics. You can even establish a conversion factor to determine a truly measurable result for your site or your campaign.

PS: No trees were destroyed during the creation of this web post.
</a10:content>

<a10:author><a10:name> </a10:name></a10:author>

GWT Launches St. David’s Rehab Micro Site

Rehabilitation is a service line that crosses the entire St. David’s HealthCare (SDH) Partnership. Advertisers are taking notice too. This virtual version of “word of mouth” influencers has some incredible power to influence their followers. So, health care marketers, here’s what you know:

Moms turn to the web for health care information + Moms turn to other moms for advice + Moms make health care decisions for their households = A BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR WEBSITE:

Have you:

Considered pitching to local mommy bloggers about your services? Are their things about your hospital or your program’s website that would be helpful and interesting to moms in your community?

Thought about enlisting the support of your own mommy blogger for key service lines like, say….Women’s Services?!

Dreamed about building a private, social network around women who have had or are having babies at your hospital? An instant, go-to audience that is unified around your facility and, quite possibly, one of the most life changing events ever?

Offered webinars and pod casts for BUSY moms about important health related information or topics? Instead of asking them to come to you (in between play groups, teacher conferences, laundry, jobs, the gym, etc) why don’t you go to them and provide education and outreach on THEIR schedules?

These ideas all have incredible potential to connect you with that virtual world out there. Think you don’t have time to understand or manage a social media campaign? We’re here to help you—your mom(s) will approve.
</a10:content>

<a10:author><a10:name> </a10:name></a10:author>

Hurray for Hospital Week!

This week hospitals all over the country will celebrate hospital week with lots of events and special activities. We’d like to give a special round of applause to our hospital clients. Together we have created some great hospital websites and web-based communication strategies that have touch the lives of people all over the world. We may be a tad partial, but we think that we work with some great hospitals!
</a10:content>

<a10:author><a10:name> </a10:name></a10:author>

National Cancer Survivor’s Day

According to the National Cancer Survivor’s Day Foundation, June 6th, which is Cancer Survivor’s Day, is the world’s largest survivor’s event. If cancer services and support are among the things offered within your organization, we think that this is a great time to update your website and use some social media tools to promote what you do!Just a few ideas and suggestions:

Use Facebook to promote an event planned by your organization that day. A great way to feature and share information about your event, Facebook can help you build awareness and collect RSVPs.

Add video via YouTube and a photo gallery tool, like Flickr, to share the stories and the images of the survivors associated with your services.

In the spirit of partnership, contact your local American Cancer Society or otherlocal organizations that provides cancer support services to add links to their survivors’ community, events, classes and support groups.

Create your own private social network for cancer survivors to connect with one another.

Whatever plans you have to mark this event, let us help you bring those to the community via your website and social media.

</a10:content>
