A Symbian S40 powered device that brings BlackBerry like styling to the masses.

When you first take the Nokia C3 out of its box you could be forgiven for thinking that you’ve been sent the wrong device it looks expensive, has a beautiful metallic finish and a full BlackBerry esque Qwerty keyboard.

And this is something of an aberration from Nokia, albeit a pleasant one, as its low end devices usually look, well, just that: lowly, plastic and cheap.

The Nokia C3 is none of these things.

The device is beautifully crafted featuring a metal back plate and high-shine plastic on the front, which looks, at first glance like its metal.

Unfortunately, it isn’t. But for £80, it’d almost be rude to ask for more especially as it looks like a lower end BlackBerry and not really like a Nokia at all.

The device is also well proportioned and measures in at 115.5x58.1x13.6mm, which means it is marginally bigger than the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and will fit into your pocket snugly.

Interestingly, though, the Nokia C3 at 114g is actually lighter than the Bold 9700, which measures in at 122g.

Unfortunately, this is where the BlackBerry comparisons end and, because the Nokia C3 is aimed at the “less fussy” mobile user, Nokia have scrimped on both the hardware and software in order to get the price down to a ridiculously low £80.

For instance, the camera, which is 2-megapixels, doesn’t have a flash and while it's okay in well-lit environments, it’s pretty useless after dark or in poorly lit rooms.

There’s also no 3G either, so you’ve only got Wi-Fi at your disposal, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, so long as you’re not bothered about being online 24/7.

If you are, however, then you should probably think about upgrading to either an S60 device or a low-end Android handset.

Obviously in a bid to keep the price dramatically low, Nokia has opted with Symbian S40 OS in the C3 so, it’s not the fastest thing in the world and there’s absolutely no multi-tasking.

This may put off a lot of users, but on the whole during testing, we found that for basic stuff such as navigating, playing games and loading web pages it performed admirably.

If you want more than that, you’ll have to pay more. Simple.

On the downside, we had a lot of problems with the Nokia C3’s Wi-Fi, which refused out right to connect to three separate networks we persisted for about an hour, decided to reset the phone, tried again and, eventually, we managed to get it connected to a network.

Nokia C3 allows you to view alerts and news on the homescreen.

It supports multiple email accounts of popular services such as Yahoo mail, Windows Live Hotmail, Gmail, OVI Mail, etc.

Running on Android 2.3 software, the Illusion comes with a fast 1-gigahertz processor and EV-DO 3.5G Internet for smooth and speedy access to multimedia and games.

The Illusion features a curved-glass touch screen display for comfort and convenience, in addition to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3-megapixel camera.

Bottom Line :

The Samsung Illusion is a decent midrange Android phone for Verizon users, but you don't have to look hard to find better options.

Design and Call Quality

The Samsung Illusion measures 4.5 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.2 ounces.

It's made entirely of plastic, with a textured back panel.

Unlike the gigantic Galaxy Nexus, the Illusion is a comfortable size to hold for any hand.

The 3.5-inch, 320-by-480-pixel capacitive touch screen is bright and vibrant, though that resolution is disappointingly low.

I would have much preferred to see the 800-by-480 screens that are now becoming standard.

I had no problem typing on the onscreen QWERTY keyboard with accuracy.

Four touch functions keys sit beneath the display, which are suitably responsive.

The Illusion is a dual-band EV-DO Rev A (800/1900MHz) with 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.

You can also use the phone as a mobile hotspot with the appropriate plan to provide a Wi-Fi connection for up to five devices.

But while there are still plenty of 3G phones coming out for Verizon, the carrier's 4G network now covers 200 million Americans; a lack of 4G is a definite minus in my book.

Voice quality is excellent.

Reception is average, and incoming calls sound rich and clear, with volume that can go extremely loud.

On the other end, calls made with the phone are equally clear and feature good background noise cancellation.

The speakerphone sounds fine, though it's a little low for outdoor use.

Calls sounded clear and natural through a Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and voice dialing worked accurately.

Battery life was excellent at 8 hours, 10 minutes of talk time.

Hardware, Android, and Apps

Inside, the Illusion is powered by the same 1GHz Cortex A8-based Hummingbird CPU found in the 4G Samsung Droid Charge ($199.99, 4 stars) as well as last year's Samsung Galaxy S line.

It's decently fast, though it lags far behind dual-core devices like the Motorola Droid Bionic ($199.99, 4.5 stars).

The Illusion runs Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) with Samsung's TouchWiz UI layer.

It isn't as all-encompassing as HTC's Sense UI, but it adds some nice color and graphic enhancements.

There are five customizable home screens that come preloaded with some useful apps and widgets.

Verizon has added some undeletable bloatware to the Illusion, but no more than you find in most Android phones nowadays.

There are no plans so far for an upgrade to Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich."

You get Google Maps Navigation for voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS directions, along with some other useful, preinstalled apps.

Of course, you also have your pick of more than 250,000+ apps from the Android Market, most of which should work well on the Illusion.

Multimedia and Conclusions

There's a side-mounted microSD card slot on the left side of the Illusion, which is a big plus. Samsung includes a 2GB card, but our 32GB and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine.

You also get 990MB of free internal storage.

Music sounded good over both wired 3.5mm headphones as well as Altec Lansing BackBeat Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 3.5 stars).

The Illusion was able to play AAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, and WMA test files, but not FLAC.

All of our video test files played back without a hitch, at resolutions up to 720p.

The 3.2-megapixel camera is disappointing.

Though it snaps photos in a quick .3 second, it lacks auto-focus or an LED flash.

Test photos look decent, with average color and detail, but they're no replacement for an average digital camera.

The camera also captures 720-by-480 (DVD quality, not HD) video at a smooth 30 frames per second both indoors and out.

The Illusion has the makings of an excellent entry-level smartphone, the kind you get for free with a two-year contract.

While it's a solid starter device, there are too many other good options on Verizon in the same price range to recommend it highly.

The Samsung Stratosphere ($99.99, 3.5 stars) gets you access to Verizon's 4G LTE network along with a much nicer display and a physical QWERTY keyboard for just $20 more than the Illusion.

The Pantech Breakout ($99.99, 3.5 stars) drops the keyboard, but also has 4G LTE and a better display.

Then there's the iPhone 4 ($99, 4 stars), which isn't 4G, but has a gorgeous display and the best app selection out there.

All three beat the Illusion handily, showing that this might be the right budget Android phone, but it's being sold for the wrong price.

I have seen a proof about the anti-stain coating in a Russian review of the Xperia S.

They write on it with a pen then wipe it out with a wet finger looks like it’s true.

In the beginning the phone is charged with an immense current of 2,6 Ampere!

This is done until the battery is at 80% charge after about 30 minute.

After that the charging rate gets lower and lower until the battery is fully charged.

That means in average 10 minutes of charge time will bring one hour talk time.

And after 30 minutes of charge you should easily bring it over a whole day.

This is very good if you forgot to put it on the charger in the evening and want to get a quick charge in the morning after getting up until you leave the house.

Sony along with the launch of Xperia Ion introduces Xperia S phone which is the first Sony phone.

Yes, that’s true! It’s the phone with no partnership with Ericsson.

This will be the debut handset with new Xperia NXT series of handsets produced by Sony.

It’s with new design approach which has emphasis on display screen.

Xperia S will be a feature rich handset providing true form of entertainment experience.

The Music Unlimited from Sony Entertainment Network offers music access to 12 million unique songs with Video Unlimited providing block buster’s movie listings.

The new Sprint Motorola Photon 4G cell phone is actually what I wanted the Evo 4G successor to be.

Sprint finally get their first dual core 4G device.

The photon has clearly better industrial design.

If you travel abroad a lot then there is no choice.

Photon’s advantage of gorilla glass is really not an advantage over the Evo3d.

The Evo 3d has gorilla glass also.

I think the biggest thing this phone is going to have over the Evo 3D is world.

If you root and like trying different ROMs, the EVO 3D is definitely the way to go.

Is the EVO 3D a good phone?

Of course it is.

Do I think the Photon 4G is better, sure.

The new Blackberry Colt, which is going to be the first BBX superphone, may come supporting 4G LTE connectivity.

In addition to social networking features and a dedicated emoticon button, this pay-as-you-go phone comes with an MP3 player.

You can use a memory card to store up to 32GB of music on the LG Rumor Touch.

You can't use your standard audio files for ringtones, but you can record anything on a voice memo and use that for call notification.

Furthermore, this phone comes with a 2MP camera that shoots still photographs and video.

You can connect using a data service or Bluetooth, but this phone is incapable of Wi-Fi connectivity.

You can surf the web with this phone, but the Opera Mini browser is less than ideal for long-term or extensive use.

Design

The LG Rumor Touch is a bar style phone with a large 3-inch pressure touchscreen.

This pressure technology means you can use your finger or a stylus to make corrections.

However, the technology is older than heat-sensitive technology used on iPhones and more recent touchscreen phones from LG.

If your screen becomes unresponsive, we recommend using the edge of your fingernail as a makeshift stylus.

The LG Rumor Touch is heavier than most of the other pay-as-you-go phones we reviewed.

This is due to its combination of a touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard.

The phone is also slightly thicker than competing models.

Summary

The LG Rumor Touch is a good option for pay-as-you-go cell phone users because it comes with many advanced features and superior calling and messaging options.

The phone's large size and operating system are limiting factors, but not ones that get in the way of keeping in touch or listening to music and occasionally enjoying web content.

Xperia Arc Smartphone from Sony Ericsson

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc is a wafer-thin Android smart phone that brings Sony's Bravia Engine TV tech to your pocket.

Thanks to an up-to-date version of Android and a thinned-down custom user interface, the Arc is by far Sony Ericsson's best Android smart phone yet.

The Arc won't be cheap.

You can expect this high-end phone to cost around £30 to £40 per month on a contract, when it arrives in shops in spring of this year.

You can also pick it up SIM-free now for around £430.

Small screen, big scene

Listing the Arc's specs makes us feel like kids in a sweet shop, but the biggest treat of all could be its 4.2-inch touchscreen.

It's not the AMOLED kind flaunted by phones like the Samsung Galaxy S. Rather, it's an LED-backlit TFT LCD screen.

This means that, although it doesn't offer the eye-piercing brightness of an AMOLED display, it delivers more subdued, accurate colours.

The 480x854-pixel screen doesn't match the iPhone 4's 640x960-pixel display, but it's still sharp and beautiful to look at.

In our eyes-on tests, the screen's colours looked natural and bright. Compared to the 4-inch, 480x800-pixel Super AMOLED screen on the Google Nexus S, the Arc's display looked noticeably sharper and clearer.

The screen uses Sony's Bravia Engine image-processing technology.

Sony Ericsson says that the Bravia system delivers optimal colour, contrast, noise reduction and sharpness on the Arc's small screen, and that it will work on any video.

We've seen it in action and it looks impressive, particularly when smoothing out streaming video in the YouTube app.

But, when watching YouTube in the browser, video didn't look nearly as sharp.

We're happy that you can actually do this, thanks to the Web browser's support for Flash, but, if you want to catch up on zany cat videos, we'd strongly recommend using the YouTube app instead.

The wide-screen aspect ratio of the screen is another plus. Movies play without any black bars.

If you have small hands, you'll probably also find the long, thin handset is easier to grasp than other phones with similarly sized screens.

There's one final note in our love letter to the Arc's display.

It looks effortlessly cool, because it sits so close to the surface of the glass.

When the phone is off, you can hardly see the edge of the display, so the Arc has a pleasingly monolithic appearance.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc offers a stunning wide-screen display and an excellent camera. It's the ideal Android smart phone for media lovers.

We just wish the three buttons beneath the screen were similarly subtle.

We prefer the Arc's proper, clicking buttons to the touch-sensitive type on many other Android smart phones, but their elongated, shiny design strikes us as being a tad '80s.

Two-dimensional experience

The Arc is one of the thinnest smart phones around, measuring 9mm at its thickest ends and curving to 8.7mm in the middle.

That makes it feel like a big After Eight mint, and just as snappable.

Sony Ericsson admits that its phones haven't been the toughest around in the past, and the Arc has a plastic case, rather than a metal one, such as that sported by the HTC Desire HD.

Still, it's hard to criticise a phone for being gorgeously thin, and Sony Ericsson does claim the Arc's screen is protected by a shatter-proof cover on top of the scratch-resistant mineral glass.

The plastic back flexes slightly, which detracts from the phone's expensive air. But there weren't any loose or wobbly parts on our sample.

Overall, the Arc is definitely worth showing off, but, like most smart phones, we don't think it would survive a short drop onto concrete.

The Arc managed to capture decent photos even in a very dark room, with its LED light turned off.

We found that the red-eye-reduction setting didn't have much effect, though.

Although the LED light certainly improved the image in dark conditions, it's painfully blinding to look at.

We'd stick to turning on the lights instead, if you can.

The Arc has a dedicated photo button on the side, but it's tiny and it sits right at one end of the phone, so it's hard to press.

We found that pressing it could sometimes cause the phone to move, which can make photos blurry.

We much preferred to take advantage of the option to tap the screen to capture a photo. You can tap anywhere on the screen, which makes it easy to take snaps quickly.

The Arc also shoots 720p high-definition video. We tested the video performance in darkness by filming a bobblehead Mountie toy trapped in a box.

The Arc was able to adjust to the darkness of the pitch-black cardboard prison, capturing the Mountie's ever-smiling face.

One advantage of shooting with the Arc, rather than the iPhone 4, was that the screen clearly showed what was being filmed.

On the iPhone 4, everything looked dark and we had to guess where to aim.

On the Arc, we could see the Mountie, so we could be sure to shoot him straight on.

With Android on-board, there are plenty of options for sharing your photos and movies online and over email. If you want to partake of your shots on the big screen, the Arc has a mini-HDMI port, and Sony Ericsson tells us the phone will come with an HDMI cable in the box. Unfortunately, we weren't provided with a cable so we couldn't test this feature out.

We're told by Sony Ericsson that the HDMI output from the phone goes beyond just showing films.

You'll be able to see everything you do on the phone mirrored on the TV screen, as with the Nokia N8, so you could show off your mobile gaming expertise, for example.

Thanks to the powers of HDMI, you can also use your TV remote to control the phone.

This may not work on older TVs, but you don't need a Sony telly.

We can see the need for remote-control compatibility.

If your phone is tethered to your telly so you can watch a video, you'd have to sit close enough to your TV to use the phone to pause, fast-forward and rewind, unless you can control everything with a remote.

But don't look for any features that will let you connect the Arc to your PlayStation, such as those on the Sony Ericsson Aino, which could connect to the console remotely.

Ditto for having privileged access to Sony's vast film and music catalogues.

Sony Ericsson concedes that it's fallen behind the pack with its smart phones' software the Xperia X10 came out with version 1.6 of Android when other phones were already sporting version 2.1.

But the company promises that it's upped its game, and aims to prove it by shipping the Arc with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the latest version of the operating system.

One of the ways in which Sony Ericsson is aiming to put Android updates out faster is by taking the hatchet to the custom skin that it slaps on top of Android.

We're told that the user interface and operating system have been separated, so updates can be made more quickly, while the UI itself has been slimmed down.

We weren't fans of the tweaks that Sony Ericsson made to Android on the X10, so we're glad that the chops have been as harsh as a post-break-up haircut.

The formerly abysmal Timescape social-networking app has been refreshed as a widget, so you can swipe through an animated pile of your recent Facebook and Twitter updates on the home screen.

The animations look as pleasing as ever, but it takes some work to integrate the app well with your social networks.

By default, tapping a tweet or Facebook status update in Timescape will send you to the Twitter or Facebook website, which is no good if you're offline.

If you install apps for the two services from the Android Market, Timescape will link with those instead, providing a smoother experience.

We'd also like the widget to fill the screen, rather than two-thirds of it. But, if you don't like Timescape, you can easily remove it from your home screen, and download something else that tickles your fancy from the Android app store.

Sony Ericsson's other flagship Android app, Mediascape, wasn't as bad on the X10 as Timescape, but it too has received a makeover on the Arc.

It's a simple, good-looking media player, and we like the button that automatically searches for an artist's videos on YouTube.

Overall, we give Sony Ericsson's custom Android skin the thumbs-up. The dark blue and black screens look slightly dated we prefer the bright, spacious feel of HTC's Sense Android skin but they don't look bad.

We especially like the glassy, transparent app menu, which you can arrange every which way to Sunday.

The user interface on the Arc is smooth and pleasurable to use. Transitions are fluid and the phone responds quickly to commands.

The Arc's processor is single-core rather than dual-core, like that of the LG Optimus 2X but it runs at 1GHz, so it should have plenty of power when it comes to keeping your apps ticking over.

The phone's battery life is unremarkable.

We got a full day of use out of it during testing, but, if you're spending much time Web surfing, watching videos or using Google Maps, you may need to charge the Arc more than once a day.

Outlook

Sony Ericsson has woken up from a few years of smart-phone slumber with the Xperia Arc.

Its shapely curves and Android brains are enough to tempt any smart-phone fancier.

Perks like the Bravia Engine screen and Exmor R CMOS camera sensor make this a monster media phone, despite its lack of PlayStation love.

With an up-to-date version of Android and a stunning wide-screen display, the Arc is a phone we'd be happy to show off.

Samsung I9103 Galaxy R

The Galaxy S lineup is no stranger to versioning the original Galaxy S relied on half a dozen different editions to achieve its market success.

Its successor will obviously take a similar path as we just got its first body double in the face of the Samsung I9103 Galaxy R.

With Tegra 2 stepping in for the Exynos chipset and SC-LCD taking the place of the new generation SuperAMOLED Plus, the Galaxy Z should be covering for the cases when the Galaxy S II is just slightly out of budget, while at the same time saving on the precious AMOLED panels.

Samsung, clarified that the handset will be available in most markets as Samsung I9103 Galaxy R.

Now, the Samsung I9100 is obviously a winning formula so Samsung should be extra careful with any changes that it introduces.

Tegra 2 is a fine alternative to Exynos and we already know what kind of performance to expect.

We’ve seen the switch to SC-LCD before with the I9003 Galaxy SL.

With the numbers the SuperAMOLED Plus packing I9100 is selling, it’s no surprise that Samsung will try to sell a few units that don’t use up their scarce SuperAMOLED recourses.

We’ve summarized the specs of the Samsung I9103 Galaxy R to get you acquainted with the device quickly, so we can move on to the fun stuff.

Clearly, the I9103 Galaxy R is meant as a companion of the I9100 Galaxy S II early pricing info also suggests that the two belong to different market segments.

We would have liked an 8MP camera and 1080p video capture, but if sticking to the 5MP/720p camera specs means we can munch on Gingerbread for less cash than the S II would cost, then we won’t complain.

After all, the original Galaxy S had a similar camera module and we’re quite pleased with it.

Before proceeding further, we should point out that we’re using a pre production model of the Samsung I9103 Galaxy R and the hardware might change before the design is finalized.

The software looks identical to the one in the I9100 Galaxy S II, so that probably won’t see much (if any) changes.

Further optimizations to suit the new chipset seem likely though.

It may not have the slender, 8.5mm frame of its big brother, but the I9103 Galaxy R is a good looking device.
