He graduated from the prestigious Ecole Centrale de Paris. His extraordinary career was marked in 1876 by the construction of the Maria Pia bridge over the River Douro in Portugal, then by that of the Garabit Viaduct in central France in 1884 and Budapest station in Hungary. He was responsible for the metal structures of the Bon Marché department store and the Crédit Lyonnais bank in Paris, the cupola of the Nice observatory, and, above all, the very impressive internal structure of the Statue of Liberty. The construction of the Eiffel Tower in 1889 was his crowning achievement. His career as an entrepreneur would come to an end with the failure of the Panama Canal project. From then on, he devoted his time to operating the Tower and to various experiments in air resistance, the observation of meteorology and especially the installation of a giant antenna for the earliest radio broadcasts. Indeed, it is because of these experiments that the Eiffel Tower is still standing, since it was initially built to last 20 years!

1832 - Born in Dijon on December 15 to François-Alexandre Eiffel and Catherine Mélanie Moneuse.
• 1843 - His early childhood is spent with his maternalgrandmother and at school at the Lycée in Dijon where he passed his baccalaureate.
• 1850 - He enrols at the Paris college of Sainte-Barbe to prepare his entrance exam to Polytechnique. This was the golden age of Freud, Zola, Jules Verne and Rodin. For the Universal Exhibition of 1889, a date that marked the centenary of the French Revolution, the Journal Officiel launched a major competition to “study the possibility of erecting an iron tower on the Champ-de-Mars. The tower would have a square base, 125 metres on each side and 300 meters high”. The project proposal by entrepreneur Gustave Eiffel, engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier and architect Stephen Sauvestre was chosen out of a total of 107.The Eiffel Tower s a 19th century iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris that has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The Eiffel Tower, which is the tallest building in Paris, is the single most visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch for the 1889 World's Fair..
The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend either on stair orlift to the first and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by lift. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants.

The EIiffel tower is the most-visited paid monument in the world. The Eiffel Tower is open 365 days a year. So that nearly 7 million visitors can be welcomed in the best conditions, operations behind the scenes resemble those in a well-oiled industrial plant. In 2003, the Tower celebrated the fact that it has welcomed over 200 million visitors in 114 years. Royalty, stars, tourists, international celebrities, strollers – these Eiffel Tower citizens” all form part of the history of one of the capital’s most astounding jewels.
As with the Pyramids, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Acropolis, the Coliseum and the Statue of
Liberty, the Eiffel Tower stirs the curiosity and evokes admiration.
Since 1998, over 6 million people have visited the monument each year!

The history behind the Eiffel Tower restaurants is inseparable from the “Great Moments”in history from the monument’s opening to the public in 1889. The Tower offers its visitorsbreathtaking seating overlooking Paris: a delight for the eyes and the taste buds. The tower has two restaurants: Altitude 95, on the first floor 311 ft (95 m) above sea level; and theJules Verne, an expensive gastronomical restaurant on the second floor, with a private lift. This restaurant has one star in the Michelin Red Guide. In January 2007, the multi-Michelin star chefAlain Ducasse was brought in to run Jules Verne
The Eiffel Tower has inspired numerous sporting, artistic and scientific feats, but has also been
witness to some incredible stunts and challenges. Its history is full of feats and exploits. Ex. Le Figaro sets up a printing press on the second floor and produces its daily paper on site. Visitors buying their newspaper can have their name inscribed on their copy to “certify” that they climbed the Tower. & A.J. Hackett, a New Zealander, bungy-jumps from the second floor.

“EIFFWL TOWER”SUBJECT OF CONTROVERSY- :
As is the case with many major architectural projects that today constitute part of France’s cultural heritage, the Tower has suffered the slings and arrows of detractors. Protest well predates the construction of such controversial structures as the Pompidou Center and the Louvre Pyramid. But time alone always proves the final judge – and in the case of the Eiffel
Tower, the verdict has already been rendered. During construction, several personalities protested violently. On February 14, 1887 Le Temps published a manifesto signed by “personalities from the world of arts and letters”* railing against the construction of a 300- meter tower on the Champs de Mars esplanade. Gustave Eiffel fought tooth and nail for his project, but the temperature of the heated debate just kept rising. A number of persons did
later change their views and make amends. Sully Prudhomme, for example, expressed his admiration as early as 1889. Coppée waxed lyrical on the subject, and the Tower inspired Gounod to write a little “concerto in the clouds”.
Since the opening of the Eiffel Tower for the Universal Exhibition of 1889, visitors have been able to visit the different floors of the monument via elevators
Why the Eiffel Tower is made of iron
What are the advantages of iron? Gustave Eiffel himself gives the answer: “First of all, its resistance. From the viewpoint of loads one or the other of these materials can support, we know
that for any given surface area, iron is ten times more resistant than wood and 20 times more resistant than stone.” He points out: “It’s above all in the large constructions that the metal’s
resistance makes it superior to other materials. The relative lightness of metal constructions also allows for smaller supports and foundations.” And he concludes: “To give just one example, that of the Exhibition Tower, I astonished more than one person who was worried about the load on the floor of the foundations, by saying that the load wouldn’t be any greater than that of a
house in Paris.”
The scientific experiments
The day after the Tower was inaugurated, Gustave Eiffel installed a meteorology lab on the third floor. He also had a passion for aerodynamics and performed a series of observations on falling
bodies (dedicated equipment was installed from 1903 to 1905). He then imagined “an automatic device sliding the length of a stretched cable between the second level of the Tower and the
ground”. He had a small wind tunnel built at the foot of the tower. From August to December 1909 he carried out five thousand tests. In addition, Gustave Eiffel encouraged others to perform experiments on the Tower: Foucault’s pendulum, the mercury manometer, physiology studies and radio contact (1898).

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the tower has been used for radio transmission. Until the 1950s, an occasionally modified set of antenna wires ran from the summit to anchors on the Avenue de Suffren and Champ de Mars. They were connected to long-wave transmitters in small bunkers; in 1909, a permanent underground radio centre was built near the south pillar and still exists today. On 20 November 1913, the Paris Observatory, using the Eiffel Tower as an antenna, exchanged sustained wireless signals with the United States Naval Observatory which used an antenna inArlington, Virginia. The object of the transmissions was to measure the difference in longitude between Paris and Washington, D.C.[46] Today, both radio and television stations broadcast their signals from the top of the Eiffel.
Maintenance of the tower includes applying 50 to 60 tonnes of paint every seven years to protect it from rust. n order to maintain a uniform appearance to an observer on the ground, three separate colors of paint are used on the tower, with the darkest on the bottom and the lightest at the top. On occasion the colour of the paint is changed; the tower is currently painted a shade of brownish-grey. On the first floor there are interactive consoles hosting a poll for the colour to use for a future session of painting. Currently, the color on display is a specific three-tone variation of bronze, with the lightest tone at the top. It was adopted in 1968 after several color changes ranging from the original reddishbrown to ocher-yellow. The three different shades today ensure a perfectly hued complement to the color of the Paris sky.

Weight of paint: approximately 60 tons
• Time required: 15 to 18 months
• Frequency required: the Tower is entirely re-painted every
7 years. The 19th painting is scheduled to begin autumn 2008 and
finish at the beginning of the year 2010.
• 25 painters
• Cost of the 18th painting in 2001: 3 million euros

FOR MORE INFORMATION -: http://www.tour-eiffel.fr/teiffel/uk/

Please do contact me for More info about any of the thingrelated to personalities profile and request your personalities, email me at guysyourock@gmail.com
http://guysyourock.blogspot.com/

Famous quotes by the little master - Sachin Tendulkar

And that is the reason why this victory is great, because different players have made contributions to the win.
At least with me, the match starts much, much earlier than the actual match.
Beating Pakistan is always special because they are a tough team and we have a bit if a history regarding Pakistan.
Before coming here I had a minor back problem and I thought whenever I play Pakistan I get a back problem.
But eventually it is a game of cricket.
But it is not fair to blame a particular individual in a team comprising 11 members.
Every individual has his own style, his own way of presenting himself on and off the field.
From the spinners, Anil and I have been together for a long time and I respect him a lot.
I always had a dream to play for India but I never let it put pressure on me.
I am not thinking too far ahead, just want to take it one thing at a time.
I believe every era has its significance and the same holds true for players and coaches.
I didn’t want to prove a point, cause bowlers always want to make a statement and my job is to go out and score runs for India.
I feel when somebody has been playing cricket for a long time, he creates a separate identity for himself.
I find it difficult to sleep even after all these years because my mind is constantly working and that is the way I have always prepared.
I hate losing and cricket being my first love, once I enter the ground it’s a different zone altogether and that hunger for winning is always there.
I have never believed in comparisons, whether they are about different eras, players or coaches.
I have never thought where I will go, or forced any targets on myself.
I have never tried to compare myself to anyone else.
I have played for 15 years and it has been a dream.
I just keep it simple. Watch the ball and play it on merit.
I just want to continue the way I am going.
I myself want to learn to play the guitar because I just love music and I want to learn to play at least one good musical instrument.
I never played with a runner in my entire life, even in schools, because only I know where the ball is going and how hard, when I hit the ball, something my runner will never know about.
I want to give my six hours of serious cricket on the ground and then take whatever the result.
If one man is representing India in cricket, then yes, blame that person when things go wrong.
Imran Khan did not become Imran Khan overnight. He worked hard to become a legend.
Isn’t cricket supposed to be a team sport? I feel people should decide first whether cricket is a team game or an individual sport.
It doesn’t always happen according to the way you have planned things out but I feel if you have covered most of the aspects, it does help out there in the middle.
It has been very good here, but the World Cup game was different. It had a different significance to it.
It is my job to make runs for the country and win. That is the job I have to do.
Lara’s done very well recently and I never had any doubts about the abilities of Lara or Waugh.
Moment there is contact your sub conscious mind knows whether it’s a single or more. It’s that fraction of contact that matters.
My first strategy was not to give any wickets in first five to six overs because first 10 overs were important.
My point of view is that when I am playing cricket I cannot think that this game is less or more important.
New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori is a very good bowler.
Obviously after such a long gap, one itches to get back to the game and score big runs.
Shoaib Akhtar has been playing for 5, 6 years and is an experienced bowler.
The Australian tour was good for us; it was ideal preparation for us.
There are a few players who don’t like to think about the game.
Wasim and Waqar were amazing bowlers. I would put them right up there with the best in the world.
We defeated England in Natwest and also in Sri Lanka, but it’s was psychological game and I wanted to settle a score because of memories of losing at Wankhede Stadium were there.
When I was 15, I started playing first class cricket and always dreamt of being a Test cricketer, wanted to do something for the country, married in 1995, have 2 kids it’s been great.

Please do contact me for More info about any of the thingrelated to personalities profile and request your personalities, email me at guysyourock@gmail.com
http://guysyourock.blogspot.com/

Sachin Tendulkar unknown interesting facts

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 129px; height: 202px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mabAnFmGDyk/S-BpuPQ0CiI/AAAAAAAAADU/4iuLQd_ONjo/s320/sac-new1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467486190719732258" />
Here are some interesting stories for all the god’s fan….
1.Sachin was given a pair of pads by his cricket hero Sunil Gavaskar when he was a schoolboy – and he made his Test debut for India against Pakistan aged just 16-years old in 1989 wearing those very pads…..

2.Like loads of other cricketers, Sachin is pretty superstitious – he’ll always put on his left pad before his right whenever he’s getting padded up……

3.“He hasn’t spent Diwali at home since we got married. But it really doesn’t matter that it’s Diwali… any time he spends at home is great!” – Anjali, his wife, told once…
Once in a BBC interview when asked about his dream women, Sachin answered ‘my wife’ without batting an eyelid.

4.”He scored a fantastic 148 in Shane Warne’s debut Test in Sydney and then followed it up with another century at Perth, one of the toughest pitches in the world, where Indians have traditionally struggled. The value of his hundred increased because all the other Indian batsmen struggled.
His weakness is the fact that he is so talented. His adrenaline pumps strongly when he walks out to bat with the noise of the crowds. You can’t hear yourself think with that noise.
I would pay $1000 to watch Sachin bat.
To score a 148 at Sydney – and that too when you are 18 — was out of the ordinary though the wicket was a lot like the ones you encounter in India, flat with lots of runs for the taking…….”
The above facts are told by Allan Border.

5.The entire cricket world is convinced of one thing : Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is the world’s best batsman. Not just for his extraordinary skill, not just for his ability to tear even the most formidable of bowling attacks to shreds; but also for a rare never-say-die spirit, an insatiable hunger for runs and victory, a desire to dominate the opponent ; commitment, dedication …
These are what the little champion has built his reputation on. ..

6.Tendulkar was a person who would never show any disrespect to the national flag..He respects the national flag most and had even sought permission to use the tricolour on his helmet……
It’s not the riches or the records but the love for the game that keeps the world’s richest cricketer going day after day. It is his hard work, determination, temperament & dedication for the country that keeps him charged….

7.Tendulkar, now in his eighteenth year in international cricket says, ”I still play… because I still love the game.” ”I would like to clarify this. It’s not about records. It’s all about loving the game and enjoying being out there in the middle. That is extremely special to me and far bigger than breaking records or creating new ones.”
”Creating records happens after you’ve gone on the cricket field, but you’ve got to find a reason to go on the cricket field, and for me the reason is very clear.”
”From the age of three I’ve loved this sport and I’ve never thought about scoring the most number of centuries or runs in international cricket. Everyone enjoys breaking records, I’m enjoying it too, but that is not the reason for playing cricket.”
“Whatever level you reach, getting better never stops”-Sachin.
Tendulkar said ”When I started playing, I always wanted to be regarded as one of the best and the idea was that when I stopped playing, people would remember my name. Being regarded as one of the best players is always a good feeling, and that drives you, it refuels you completely. You want to be on top of your game all the time and push yourself harder and harder. There’s a huge responsibility and it is a great challenge. I love that,” he added…..

8.Some quotes by GOD himself……
My big sister gave it to me after returning from a trip to Kashmir, which is known for its high-quality willows. It wasn’t the best bat, but it was like a piece of gold to me. I used to imagine myself batting for India, hitting fours and sixes, the people cheering.
I used that bat until it broke ..
I was the only one supporting John McEnroe — everyone used to call me “Mac” because I styled myself on him. I made my father buy me the same headbands and sweatbands and even grew my hair long. You wouldn’t believe the pictures of me from that time. I was also extremely naughty. Very, very difficult to handle. …I had a nanny who used to run after me virtually 24 hours a day, because I never wanted to go home
My father, who died in 1999, was never a cricket fan, not at all. He was a writer and a poet: he taught Marathi, my mother tongue, at the local university. But he understood exactly how to get the best out of me. He always encouraged me and told my mother that he had full faith in me. It was probably reverse psychology, but as I got older I felt like I could not misuse that trust. He warned me against taking short cuts and told me to just keep playing, despite the ups and downs. My parents taught me that it is important to live every day of your life with grace and honour. When it came to choosing between cricket and going to university, he said: “You can play cricket, I know that is your first love, so go for it.”
Of course, my parents were extremely happy when I became the youngest player to play for India, at 16. ..
Cricket is something very, very special to me. It has never been about owning this or that car and the other things that come with this life.. An obsession with money or worldly matters was always thumbed down. My only dream was to wear the Indian cap and the Indian colours. In that respect, my childhood dreams have come true…..
Having children brings back all my old childhood memories, wonderful years. Now, every minute is measured and calculated. I still dream — without dreams, life is flat, you stagnate. I don’t go to the temple every morning, but I do pray. I thank God for everything he has given me, because life has been very good to me.

9.Chappell should remember how Tendulkar has achieved his greatness and carried the weight of expectations of a billion people since the age of 16, Jadeja said. He added “When tendulkar enters the field, the crowd says-SACHIN! SACHIN! This is something what every cricketer wants”..
Sachin Tendulkar, the brightest star in the world of cricket has achieved his greatest prices with his intellectual and skilful cricketing brains..
SACHIN dreamt a world of superstars and great triumph and he achieved it..
At the age of 10 he walked to the field at 6 am with a cricket bag bigger than him for the practice. At the age of 11 he moved with his paternal uncle to get trained in cricket by the most renowned coach Ramakanth Achrekar. ..

10.Billions of hearts weep…..on the day when Sachin (GOD) retire.
Indians wish that day never comes. It would be one of the most disappointing days of our life. Ever since Indians started watching cricket, it was Sachin, Sachin & only Sachin who made them feel cricket so special. Sachin is only responsible for making cricket a religion in India. They haven’t experienced watching cricket without Sachin. Whether he was injured/rested, there was always a ray of hope that he comes back to team soon. But after retirement, he will never be backing………..If anyone wants to achieve anything in life, Sachin is the best example for them.
I feel most people find it hard to digest that Sachin will no more be a part of Indian cricket…….on that day, isn’t it?
JUST imagine that day, when Sachin plays his last game. He comes to bat for the last time, and everybody in the stadium claps & the chants of SACHIN!!! came for the last time after he gets out, while walking back to the pavilion, the entire crowd gives him a stand awaition. Many of them will be in tears, millions of eyes wet watching their hero play for the last time. An era ends. The end of a legend came……..The bond between every generation breaks. Would you miss Sachin a lot? I think most of people would say “YES”. The saddest day of Indian cricket- when genius retires…LOVE YOU SACHIN!!!

11.From the early 90s to the early years of the new millennium represented the decade of Brian Lara, Richardson, Martin Crowe, Steve and Mark Waugh, Mathew Hayden, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Gary Kirsten and Rahul Dravid. But there can be any doubt that the No.1 batsman in the world for a decade now has been Master Blaster, Sachin Tendulkar. .
But figures, however important they may be, are something that Tendulkar’s achievement should not be measured by. He should be judged by the manner of his batting & that is what Bradman did.
Symbolized by Sir Bradman naming him in his dream team of all time. The team in which Tendulkar is the only Indian player.
He has scored runs on slow pitches of the subcontinent, fast tracks of West Indies, bouncy wickets in Australia and South Africa and in whirling conditions in New Zealand and England.
The thought of having Tendulkar as an opponent gives bowlers bad dreams. No batsman has inflicted such psychological damage to bowlers at any time in the world like Tendulkar did to Shane Warne!!!(Warne said Tendulkar is my nightmare).
His technique is so well organized that he is able to encounter any delivery with ease and comfort, giving the impression of having all the time in the world to play the stroke, the hallmark of the greatest of batsmen.

Please do contact me for More info about any of the thingrelated to personalities profile and request your personalities, email me at guysyourock@gmail.com
http://guysyourock.blogspot.com/

Sachin Tendulkar - The Master Blaster

Full Name: Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar
Date of Birth: April 24, 1973
Place of Birth: Mumbai
Major Teams: India, Mumbai Indians
Batting Style: Right -Hand Batsman
Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium, Leg Break, Right Arm Off Break
ODI Debut : India v Pakistan at Gujranwala, 2nd ODI, 1989/90
Test Debut : India v Pakistan at Karachi, 1st Test, 1989/90
Height : 5'5

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is an Indian cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He is the leading run-scorer and century maker in Test and One Day International cricket.
Tendulkar was born in Mumbai. His father, Ramesh Tendulkar, a Marathi novelist, named Tendulkar after his favourite music director,Sachin Dev Burman.. Tendulkar's elder brother Ajit encouraged him to play cricket.
Tendulkar attended Sharadashram Vidyamandir (High School),[1] where he began his cricketing career under the guidance of his coach and mentor,Ramakant Achrekar. During his school days he attended the MRF Pace Foundation to train as a fast bowler, but Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee, who took a world record 355 Test wickets, was unimpressed, suggesting that Tendulkar focus on his batting instead.

When he was young, Tendulkar would practice for hours on end in the nets. If he became exhausted, Achrekar would put a one-Rupee-coin on the top of the stumps, and the bowler who dismissed Tendulkar would get the coin. If Tendulkar passed the whole session without getting dismissed, the coach would give him the coin. Tendulkar now considers the 13 coins he won then as some of his most prized possessions. He was getting famous day by day. In 1988 session he scored century in every innigs he played. He was involved in an unbroken 664-run partnership in a Lord Harris Shield inter-school game in 1988 with friend and team mate Vinod Kambli.Tendulkar(326* runs).
When he was 14, Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar gave him a pair of his own ultra light pads. "It was the greatest source of encouragement for me," he said nearly 20 years later after surpassing Gavaskar's world record of 34 Test centuries. On 24 May 1995, Sachin Tendulkar married Anjali, a paediatrician and daughter of Gujarati industrialist Anand Mehta. They have two children, Sara (born 12 October 1997), and Arjun (born 24 September 1999)..
Tendulkar sponsors 200 underprivileged children every year through Apnalaya, a Mumbai-based NGO associated with his mother-in-law, Annabel Mehta
Some remarkable achievements -:
. He is the only player to score a double century in an innings in the history of ODI cricket.
In 2002, Wisden ranked him the second greatest Test batsman of all time, behind Donald Bradman, and the second greatest one day international (ODI) batsman of all time, behindViv Richards
In September 2007, the Australian leg spinner Shane Warne rated Tendulkar as the greatest player he has played with or againstTendulkar was the only player of the current generation to be included in Bradman's Eleven
Tendulkar is the first player to score fifty centuries in all international cricket combined, he now has 93 centuries in international cricket. On 17 October 2008, when he surpassed Brian Lara's record for the most runs scored in Test Cricket, he also became the first batsman to score 12,000 runs in that form of the game, having also been the third batsman and first Indian to pass 11,000 runs in Test cricket.
He was also the first player to score 10,000 runs in one-day internationals.
He was first player to cross every subsequent 1000-run mark that has been crossed in ODI cricket history.
In the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Tendulkar surpassed Australia's Allan Border to become the player to cross the 50-run mark the most number of times in Test cricket history, and also the second ever player to score 10 Test centuries against Australia, after only Sir Jack Hobbs of England more than 70 years previously.
Tendulkar passed 30,000 runs in international cricket on 20 November 2009, and has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan award, India's second highest civilian award, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India's highest sporting honour.
CAPTAINCy -:
Tendulkar's two tenures as captain of the Indian cricket team were not very successful. When Tendulkar took over as Captain in 1996, it was with huge hopes and expectations. However, by 1997 the team was performing poorly. Azharuddin was credited with saying "Nahin jeetega! Chote ki naseeb main jeet nahin hai!",[49] which translates into: "He won't win! It's not in the small one's destiny!"
Tendulkar, succeeding Azharuddin as captain for his second term, then led India on a tour of Australia, where the visitors were comprehensively beaten 3–0 by the newly crowned world champions.[51]Tendulkar, however, was at his usual best and won the player of the tournament award as well as player of the match in one of the games. After another Test series defeat, this time by a 0–2 margin at home against South Africa, Tendulkar resigned, and Sourav Ganguly took over as captain in 2000.

BUSINESS MAN…SACHIN
Tendulkar's immense popularity has led him to numerous profitable business dealings in the past. He currently has the most sponsorships out of all players in world cricket. Sachin Tendulkar was an early pioneer in India on cricket business dealings when he signed a then record sports management deal with Worldtel in 1995, the value of the deal being 30 crore rupees over five years.[94] His next contract with WorldTel in 2001 was valued at 80 crores over five years.[95] In 2006, he signed a contract with Saatchi and Saatchi's ICONIX values at 180 crores over three years.[96] He is the highest earning cricketer in the world.
Making use of his popularity, Tendulkar has opened two restaurants: 'Tendulkar's'[97] (Colaba, Mumbai) and 'Sachin's'[98] (Mulund, Mumbai). Sachin owns these restaurants in partnership with Sanjay Narang of Mars Restaurants. He has also got a new restaurant in Bangalore called Sachin's.
In 2007, Tendulkar also announced a JV with the Future Group and Manipal Group to launch healthcare and sports fitness products under the brand name 'S Drive and Sach'.[99] A series of comic books by Virgin Comics is also due to be published featuring him as a superhero

Product and brand endorsements
Sachin Tendulkar endorses the following products:
Pepsi: 1992–Present
Canon: 2006–2009
Airtel: 2004–2006
Nazara Technologies: 2005–2008. When acquisition costs are similar, we much prefer to purchase $2 of earnings that is not reportable by us under standard accounting principles than to purchase $1 of earnings that is reportable.

• Never invest in a business you cannot understand.

• Unless you can watch your stock holding decline by 50% without becoming panic-stricken, you should not be in the stock market.

• Why not invest your assets in the companies you really like? As Mae West said, "Too much of a good thing can be wonderful".

• (When speaking of managers and executive compensation) The .350 hitter expects, and also deserves, a big payoff for his performance - even if he plays for a cellar-dwelling team. And a .150 hitter should get no reward - even if he plays for a pennant winner.

• The critical investment factor is determining the intrinsic value of a business and paying a fair or bargain price.

• Risk can be greatly reduced by concentrating on only a few holdings.

• Stop trying to predict the direction of the stock market, the economy, interest rates, or elections.

• Many stock options in the corporate world have worked in exactly that fashion: they have gained in value simply because management retained earnings, not because it did well with the capital in its hands.

• Buy companies with strong histories of profitability and with a dominant business franchise.

• Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful.
• It is optimism that is the enemy of the rational buyer.
• As far as you are concerned, the stock market does not exist. Ignore it.
• The ability to say "no" is a tremendous advantage for an investor.
• Much success can be attributed to inactivity. Most investors cannot resist the temptation to constantly buy and sell.

• Lethargy, bordering on sloth should remain the cornerstone of an investment style.
• An investor should act as though he had a lifetime decision card with just twenty punches on it.
• Wild swings in share prices have more to do with the "lemming- like" behaviour of institutional investors than with the aggregate returns of the company they own.

• As a group, lemmings have a rotten image, but no individual lemming has ever received bad press.
• An investor needs to do very few things right as long as he or she avoids big mistakes.
• "Turn-arounds" seldom turn.
• Is management rational?
• Is management candid with the shareholders?
• Does management resist the institutional imperative?
• Do not take yearly results too seriously. Instead, focus on four or five-year averages.

• Focus on return on equity, not earnings per share.
• Calculate "owner earnings" to get a true reflection of value.
• Look for companies with high profit margins.
• Growth and value investing are joined at the hip.
• The advice "you never go broke taking a profit" is foolish.
• It is more important to say "no" to an opportunity, than to say "yes".
• Always invest for the long term.
• Does the business have favourable long term prospects?
• It is not necessary to do extraordinary things to get extraordinary results.
• Remember that the stock market is manic-depressive.
• Buy a business, don't rent stocks.
• Does the business have a consistent operating history?

• An investor should ordinarily hold a small piece of an outstanding business with the same tenacity that an owner would exhibit if he owned all of that business.
http://guysyourock.blogspot.com/

Warren Buffet -- Investment tips

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; "A ham sandwich could run Coca-Cola."
Believe it or not, that's a compliment to Coke. It speaks to why it's Berkshire Hathaway's biggest stock holding. As Peter Lynch put it, "Go for a business that any idiot can run -- because sooner or later, any idiot probably is going to run it."

9. Margin of safety
As with many of his most beloved tenets, Buffett got this one from his mentor, Benjamin Graham. A margin of safety simply means buying in at a price well below your best estimate for a stock's intrinsic value.

In other words, don't just buy popular names like McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) and UPS (NYSE: UPS) because they are great companies with seemingly strong moats (McDonald's brand and UPS's logistics network are difficult for new competitors to match ... more on moats later). Go the extra step, and only buy them when they are great companies selling for good to great prices.

If you're wondering, neither McDonald's nor UPS gets me super-excited at current price multiples (14 times forward earnings for McDonald's and 18 times for UPS), but neither strikes me as wildly over-valued, either, based on their quality of earnings and likely ability to grow said earnings conservatively. Fairly priced stocks are fine, but we're looking for a margin of safety.

8. The concept of inner scorecard vs. outer scorecard
"If the world couldn't see your results, would you rather be thought of as the world's greatest investor but in reality have the world's worst record? Or be thought of as the world's worst investor when you were actually the best?"

Those who answer the latter have an inner scorecard. They'll have the ability to be a true contrarian, ignoring the world's judgment and focusing on long-term results.

7. Don't fall into the false precision trap
"We like things that you don't have to carry out to three decimal places. If you have to carry them out to three decimal places, they're not good ideas."

It's important to keep the big picture in mind. A 20-tab Excel model that calculates a company's value on a discounted cash-flow basis is useless unless you understand the business enough to feed in good assumptions. When Buffett made a killing on PetroChina (NYSE: PTR) earlier in the decade, the mispricing was so obvious that his only due diligence was reading its annual report (sorry, investors, the magnitude of that mispricing is long gone as he sold out his position in 2007 because of valuation concerns ... the stock isn't much lower than those levels currently). Not recommended for mere mortals, but you see his point.

6. A stock is the right to own a little piece of a business
Another Graham idea. We frequently divorce a stock from its underlying company, especially when Mr. Market is delivering up a volatile stock price. Remember, though, that in the long run, a stock is only as good as the company backing it up. Kind of like how a promise is only as good as the person making it.

5. "Intensity is the price of excellence"
When asked what the most important key to his success was, Buffett answered, "Focus." Microsoft founder Bill Gates answered the same way.

Buffett reached his current heights not only because of his brilliant mind, but also because of a focus that has had him analyzing stocks for hours on end, just about every day, for decades.

The takeaway for armchair investors is to stick to buying and holding index funds and ETFs, unless you have the time to dedicate to individual stock picking. Even then, indexing should be the core of most portfolios.

4. "I will tell you how to become rich. Close the doors. Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful."
Remembering the Buffett concept of an inner scorecard, and the Rudyard Kipling admonition to "keep your head when all about you are losing theirs," can lead to outsize returns as Mr. Market sways back and forth.

3. "Leverage is the only way a smart guy can go broke."
Debt is dangerous. That's why you can have banks rife with Harvard MBAs (hello, Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) and JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM), I see your balance sheets that still rely heavily on short-term debt) that are always a few days away from bankruptcy via a crisis in confidence. See also: Lehman Brothers.

For regular investors, buying stock on margin replicates this risk. Don't do it.

2. The concept of a "moat"
Buffett looks for companies with moats, or sustainable competitive advantages. The strength of Coca-Cola's moat (its brand) is why he believes a ham sandwich could run it. The stronger a company's moat, the more likely it will be a leader for decades rather than years.

For examples, see some of the other companies Berkshire Hathaway owns a significant stake in: Kraft (NYSE: KFT), GEICO, Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), and Wells Fargo. In terms of competitive advantages, Kraft and P&G rely on branding, GEICO provides customers with rock-bottom prices by eliminating insurance agents, and Wells Fargo is able to consistently beat other big banks on net interest margin.

1. The Snowball
Buffett's definitive biography, "The Snowball," is titled so because it sums up his life in two words. Over everything else, Buffett believes in the power of patiently compounding over time. In investing, that means starting as early as possible (he started as a pre-teen), avoiding short-term risks even if it means lower possible returns (rule No. 1: never lose money), and letting investing returns build upon themselves.

http://guysyourock.blogspot.com/

warren buffet - Intersting facts...

There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second
richest man who has donated $31 billion (85% of his fortune) to charity.

Here are some very interesting aspects of his life:

1) Warren bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!

2) He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers.

3) He still lives in the same small 3 bedroom house in mid-town Omaha, that he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence.

4) He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.

5) He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.

6) His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis.

7) Warren Buffet has given his CEO's only two rules.

Rule number 1: Do not lose any of your share holder's money.

Rule number 2: Do not forget rule number 1.

8) He does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time after he gets home is to make himself some pop corn and watch television.

9) Bill Gates, the world's richest man met him for the first time only 5 years ago. Bill Gates did not think he had anything in common with Warren Buffet. So he had scheduled his meeting only for half hour. But when Gates met him, the meeting lasted for ten hours and Bill Gates became a devotee of Warren Buffet.

10) Warren Buffet does not carry a cell phone, nor has a computer on his desk.

11) His advice to young people: Stay away from credit cards and invest in yourself
http://guysyourock.blogspot.com/

Warren Buffet-Oracle of Ohama

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Buffett's father, Howard was a stockbroker and also became a member of congress. Warren Buffett showed early signs of being entrepreneurial through being involved in various business dealings as a child, including purchasing bottles of cola cheaply and selling them for a profit. He also made his first investment in the stock market when he was just 11 years old.

Buffett began studying at the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, but transferred to the University of Nebraska where he graduated. He then went on to the Columbia University to do a Masters in economics. This was where he met the influential value investor Benjamin Graham.

The young investor was very influenced by Benjamin Graham and went to work for him in his company "Graham-Newman". It was here that Warren Buffett developed many of his stock market investing skills that have now become legendary. Graham developed a method where investors could work out the intrinsic value of a company and make intelligent investing decisions by comparing the stock price to the intrinsic value.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Berkshire Hathaway
After Graham's retirement, Buffett returned to Omaha and began a limited investing fund partnership with a group of friends, family and associates. The "Buffett Partnerships Ltd" fund racked up amazing returns for its investors over a ten year period, with returns 10 times higher than the Dow Jones Industrial average for the same time. Buffett liquidated the fund and took control of the textile company Berkshire Hathaway.

It was a difficult time for the textile industry and Buffett eventually wound up Berkshire Hathaway's textile activities, but kept the name for Buffett's portfolio of companies and investments. The insurance industry was the first major area of success that Berkshire Hathaway had, with the funds used to acquire carefully selected investments each year. Major undervalued companies that Buffett took advantage of included "American Express", "Coca-Cola" "The Washington Post" and "Gillette". Berkshire Hathaway owns large holdings of each of the above major brand companies (more than 5% each).
Selected Berkshire subsidiary companies include:

Borsheim's Fine Jewelry

Acme Brick Company

Buffalo NEWS, Buffalo NY

Clayton Homes

Fruit of the Loom

GEICO Direct Auto Insurance

General Re

Helzberg Diamonds

Nebraska Furniture Mart

The Pampered Chef

See's Candies

United States Liability Insurance Group

Warren Buffett lives with his long time partner Astrid Menks in Omaha, USA. All three were close, and holiday cards to friends were signed "Warren, Susie and Astrid" (as per Roger Lowenstein's book, Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist). Susan Buffett briefly discussed this relationship in an interview on the Charlie Rose Show shortly before her death, in a rare glimpse into Buffett's personal life.

Buffett is an avid player of the card game bridge. Much to the amazement of Atari, Wozniak reduced the number of chips by 50, a design so tight that it was impossible to reproduce on an assembly line. His adoptive parents named him as Steve Paul. He was a student of the Cupertino Junior High School and Homestead High School in California. During his years of schooling, Steve used to attend after-school lectures at the Hewlett-Packard Company, which fetched him a summer job in the company. Here he got the opportunity to work with Steve Wozniak, the cofounder of Apple Inc, later to be.

In 1991, Steve Jobs married Laurene Powell and they later had three children.

After graduating from high school, Steve was admitted to the Reed College in Portland, from which he dropped out and took up a course in calligraphy. Calligraphy, seeming to be of no use in a career in computers, later turned out being the most important factor responsible for the development of fonts.

In 1984, Jobs purchased a 14-bedroom Spanish Colonial mansion, which he inhabited for around ten years. Reports say that he had kept an old BMW in the living room of this magnificent apartment he owned.

Job's Professional life-:

In 1976, Steve Jobs in collaboration with Stephen Wozniak, a former electronics hacker, founded Apple and a success story had begun! They were funded by A.C. "Mike" Markkula. With the effective words, which said, "Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water to children, or do you want a chance to change the world?" Jobs managed to attract John Sculley, who was previously working with Pepsi-Cola, to be the CEO of Apple.

January 24, 1984 was the day that marked the introduction of Macintosh, which went up to become the first commercially used small computer with a GUI.

Later, during the same year, Jobs' relations with Scully worsened and Jobs had to receive one of the greatest blows of his life, a lay-off from Apple! But he was Steve Jobs, not the one to lose hope so easily. He went on to found NeXt Computer, a computer company that was highly experimental and technologically advanced. The NeXt workstation had a built-in Ethernet port; it supported embedded graphics and proved being a step towards personal computing.

In 1996, Apple came forward to buy NeXt, thus resulting in Jobs returning to Apple. At the 2000 MacWorld Expo, Jobs became the permanent CEO of Apple. From then on, there was no looking back. He is the winner of many awards, the most prominent of them being the National Medal of Technology from the President. He is also inducted to the California Hall of Fame. While facing criticism from some sectors of industry, he continued being one of the admired figures in the sphere of technology. Steve Jobs remains being one of the icons of the computer industry

Something important abt JOBS--:

In the late 1970s, Jobs, with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula,[10] and others, designed, developed, and marketed some of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers, the Apple II series and later, the Macintosh. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see thecommercial potential of the mouse-driven graphical user interface.[11][12] After losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985,[13][14] Jobs resigned from Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher education and business markets. NeXT's subsequent 1997 buyout by Apple Computer Inc. brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and he has served as its CEO since then.
In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios.[15] He remained CEO and majority shareholder until its acquisition by the Walt Disney Company in 2006.[2] Jobs is currently a member of Walt Disney Company's Board of Directors.[16][17]
Jobs' history in business has contributed much to the symbolic image of the idiosyncratic, individualistic Silicon Valley entrepreneur, emphasizing the importance of design and understanding the crucial role aesthetics play in public appeal. His work driving forward the development of products that are both functional and elegant has earned him a devoted following.[18] Beginning in mid-January 2009, Jobs took a five-month leave of absence from Apple to undergo aliver transplant.[19] Jobs officially resumed his role as CEO of Apple on June 29, 2009

Jobs' biggest coup came in May 1998, when he unveiled iMac. iMac combined computer and monitor into a single unit. A stunning success, iMac helped revive Apple sales and remains one of the biggest money makers. In 2007, Mac accounted for 43 per cent of the company's revenue.

In October 2001, Apple unveiled its first iPod, the digital music player further galvanised the company's position in the market. The portable music players continue to dominate the global market.

In January 2007, Steve Jobs introduced iPhone, Apple's state-of-the-art mobile phone. With iPod and its accessories, Apple TV and the iPhone, it became clear that Apple is no longer a mere computer company. Hence, went the term `Computer' from its official name.
