Amendment 715 was an invitation to the federal government to further infringe on the rights of Americans by greatly expanding a background check system that could have created a de facto national gun registry and placed excessive burdens on private law-abiding sellers and buyers.
Here are the four Republican senators who voted against your Second Amendment rights.

Mitt Romney would be an acceptable candidate for the Democratic Party, and he would be a sublime candidate for the Reform Party; however, there are numerous reasons Mitt Romney should not be nominated to run for President as a Republican. Some examples include, his championing of socialized medicine, his creepy and cold personality, his lack of humor, his lack of support among conservatives, his lack of connection with the working class, etc.

All of these are excellent reasons why Mitt Romney should not be nominated to run as a Republican for President, but hey pale in comparison to the kiss of death delivered by one of the biggest losers to occupy the White House in the 20th Century. September 15, 2011, on MSNBC, Jimmy Carter stated he wants Mitt Romney to win the Republican nomination. Quite wisely, Carter thinks Romney will lose to Barack Obama, but Carter still thinks Romney at least deserves the nomination.

Jimmy Carter's motivations are unclear. Either Carter is intentionally torpedoing the Romney campaign by endorsing Romney, or Carter loves Obama, and he actually wants Romney to run against Obama, because he knows Romney will inspire the lowest Republican turnout in history, giving Obama at least a 70% chance of winning the general election,. Regardless, Jimmy Carter has inflicted horrible damage on Romney with this endorsement. The Romney campaign must be scrambling to minimize the harm of this humiliation.

Internet Tracking Bill Passes House Judiciary Committee

The members of Congress are currently working on a law that will significantly reduce the privacy of average innocent Americans. Sponsored by Lamar Smith of Texas, H.R.1981 passed the House Judiciary Committee on July 29, 2011 with supporting votes from the following Representatives.

Rep Adams, Sandy [FL-24] - Republican
Rep Ross, Dennis [FL-12] - Republican
Rep Smith, Lamar [TX-21] - Republican

This bill, mostly supported by Republicans, has a very deceptive name. It has been called the Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011, but the law will do little to stop child pornographers. What the law actually does is cast a broad net of data retention for every American who uses the Internet. This law will require all internet service providers in the United States to keep extensive records on the online activity of their subscribers. Some of the information to be tracked is customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses.

If you use the Internet, regardless of whether your actions are legal or not, detailed records of who you are and what you do online will be stored for at least one year. These records may be used by law enforcement to investigate virtually any sort of crime. Do not be surprised if the reach of the law expands even further into civil uses in the future.

Here is a list of the sponsor and co-sponsors of H.R.1981

On CNN's State of the Union, Boehner said, "We accept moderates in our party, and we want moderates in our party. We cover a wide range of Americans."

This is exactly what is wrong with the GOP. The last thing the GOP needs is more moderates. Conservative voters want to vote for conservatives. They do not want moderates, and they will not support them. As long as the GOP embraces moderates, they can be sure the GOP will continue to lose elections. Moderates got the GOP into their current mess and will continue to drag the party down until the GOP either becomes completely obsolete of rediscovers conservatism.

The GOP needs to move back toward conservatism, and they need to do it in a hurry. The GOP has about six more months to get their act together in time to charm voters for the 2010 Election. If John Boehner's idiotic comment is any indication of the GOP's plans for the next six months, they should just step aside and let a third party take the lead.

List of Republican Cowards Who Do Not Respect Contracts or Private Property

Once again, the Republicans in the House of Representatives have let down their party and the American people. In another act of cowardice, eighty-five Republicans (nearly half of House Republicans) voted with Democrats in their effort to use a 90% tax to seize bonuses paid to AIG employees. It should be pointed out these bonuses contractually had to be paid, and Congress along with Barack Obama had previously okayed these bonuses.

Today, Congress decided to seize legally obtained money from specific US citizens, and they did it with substantial Republican support. Jimmy Carter was elected after a very controversial administration as a liberal, family values, intellectual Democrat. Does this sound familiar? Of course, people soon realized how poorly suited Carter was for the job, but America was stuck with him for four years.

This four-year period was a time of tremendous inflation, rampant liberalism, foreign policy humiliations, and domestic despair. This period of suffering and malaise forced conservative Democrats to look outside of their party for relief. In 1980, Reagan soundly defeated Carter, ushered in one of the greatest times in American history, and created the gold standard of conservatism.

Since Obama is so much like Carter, one must wonder if Obama's administration will also be a tremendous failure. If it is, maybe Obama will pave the way for another great conservative. Right now, the only potential shinning candidate on a hill is Sarah Palin. If she doesn't rise to the occasion, maybe Jeb Bush can grow a beard, change his name to Jeb Shrubbery, and try to make it through the election before people figure out he has some famous relatives. Beyond that, it will have to be Joe the Plumber, Ted Nugent, or some sort of reanimated Thomas Jefferson zombie. (Great conservatives are hard to come by these days.)

The point is we had to suffer through four years of Carter to get eight years of Reagan and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Maybe Obama will wake up America (a nation which has been asleep since the fall of Baghdad), and we will get to see another great eight years and the fall of the Chinese Communist government and the Soviet Union II, which will probably be established by Vladimir Putin just after Obama takes the oath of office in January.

"Mr. Putin, tear down that wall again."

Time for Some Campaignin' by JibJab

JibJab has made a funny and smart video about the 2008 election to the tune of Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin'." See it here.

"Time for Some Campaignin'"

President Bush Defies the Fourth Amendment with Surveillance Bill Signature

President George W. Bush has once again struck another major blow to the Fourth Amendment by signing the Surveillance Bill. The Surveillance Bill gives greater power to the Federal government’s initiatives to spy on law-abiding Americans without court approval. It also grants protection to companies, which voluntarily comply with the Federal government in violating your rights. In short, the government wants to continue to spy on you, and give you little recourse, if any.

By signing the Surveillance Bill, President George W. Bush has extended a shameful era where you, as a private citizen, may be put under intrusive investigation without a warrant. And, by the way, the surveillance warrants are available. The Bush administration just does not want to be troubled with requesting them through proper channels. Apparently, convenience trumps your Fourth Amendment rights.

<category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="George W. This is an attractive prospect because Rice is smart, educated, experienced, attractive, groomed, connected, talented, etc. If that were not enough, she is also a “double minority.” To the politically correct crowd, Rice is doubly attractive because she is black and female. By being a black woman she trumps Hillary Clinton’s gender credentials and Barack Obama’s race credentials. Neither Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama can “out minority” Secretary Rice.

The problem with Condoleezza Rice is that she is President George W. Bush’s person, and everyone knows it. W’s Presidency has been horribly unpopular and has been a lighting rod for liberals, conservatives, and everyone in between. If John McCain wants to govern the country, he needs to make a clean break from the W administration. America needs a fresh start, and the choice of Vice President Rice just tells the country that President McCain plans to continue along the path of W. How many people really want another four years of the W administration? McCain needs to pick someone fresh. When McCain picks his VP, he needs to go very conservative to energize the base or rather liberal to attract the moderates. Whomever McCain chooses, he needs to show the country he plans on making changes, because change is what the voters want. Millions of people have worked hard and played by the rules to enter America legally. How can we possibly betray their efforts with a massive amnesty program for illegals?

Anyone who has gone through the process of becoming a permanent resident of America, knows that it is a grueling challenge involving stacks of paperwork, ridiculous amounts of money, numerous appointments, and years of waiting. Those that have entered America illegally have bypassed the system and made things harder for those who wish to operate within the law.

If America offers amnesty to illegals, what sort of message will we send to those immigrants who choose to follow the rules? How can any immigrant take our laws seriously if they see that we are so accommodating to those who blatantly disregard our right to control our borders?

Guest worker visas for illegals is a horrible idea. The White House has tried to defend itself by claiming that the spying is authorized under the “use of force” power granted by Congress, but invading privacy is not use of force. It is illegal spying on people who have not been charged with crimes or been placed under court-approved investigation.

The Presidential powers are limited for a reason. History has shown us that one man with too much power can be incredibly dangerous. The power of the Executive branch needs to be checked by the Judicial and Legislative branches to keep the President from growing too powerful. When Bush bypassed the courts to spy on Americans, he gave himself powers he was never supposed to have.

The White House claims that the authorization of domestic spying is within the President’s power, but that argument does not make sense. If it is within the President’s power to authorize spying on American citizens without court approval, why did President Bush get court approval for some of the domestic spying projects, while conducting other spying operations in secret? If the President does not need court approval to spy on Americans, he should have just bypassed the courts all together. That certainly would have made things faster and easier for the White House.

Naïve citizens think the secret spying is not a big problem. Most people think that the Federal government is spying only on Al Qaeda associates, but it would be very easy for completely innocent people to get caught in this secret web.

For example, let’s say you sold your computer, and the buyer happened to be remotely connected to a terrorist group. A sweep of your old computer’s hard drive might reveal the names and addresses of you, your friends, and your family. Suddenly, because the wrong person bought your old computer, you and the people you know might be considered legitimate terror suspects and therefor be subjected to domestic spying.

This is just one example. There are many other circumstances that could place you under suspicion. What if your child has a college roommate related to a questionable organization? What if a terrorist hacks your computer or steals your cell phone? What if a suspected person works with you or rents from you? The scenarios go on and on. You may currently be associated with a terrorist suspect and you don’t even know it; however, thanks to illegal spying, the White House probably does.

We are losing freedoms rapidly in this country, and a lot of these freedoms are being sacrificed for the promise of security. It is time to start asking ourselves just what we are trying to protect. Is a little extra defense against terrorists really worth giving up the beautiful and glorious freedoms on which this country was founded?

Jeb Bush Is the Perfect Vice-President for Giuliani

Assuming that Rudy Giuliani will get the Republican presidential nomination, the GOP will have to overcome Giuliani’s biggest problem. Rudy Giuliani is a moderate, and conservatives hate moderates.

The Republican conservatives are going to begin grumbling when they start learning about Giuliani’s liberal positions on social issues. A lot of conservatives are not going to like Giuliani, so the GOP will need to find someone to appease that huge portion of the base.

Nothing appeases conservatives like a Bush. Fortunately, the Bush family has a new Bush coming up in the current growing season: Jeb Bush. Jeb Bush may not be as conservative as his brother, President George W. Bush, but he is a solid Republican with a proven track record as Governor of Florida. Governor Bush is a good public speaker, is respected, and is highly popular in Florida. Jeb Bush will soon be stepping down as Governor, and he will be looking for the next big job.

As the candidate for Vice-President, Jeb Bush could easily carry the swing state of Florida. Florida could decide the 2008 election. If Jeb Bush can take Florida, the Democrats will have to work very hard in the other swing states.

Furthermore, Jeb Bush is a rather young man, and he has a strong appeal to younger people. He also has a Mexican wife and speaks fluent Spanish. Jeb Bush’s Hispanic connections will help the Republicans appeal to the growing group of Latino voters.

Some will argue that Jeb Bush’s worst asset is his last name. Liberals have grown to hate the Bush family name, and they will instinctively vote against any ballot entry where that name appears. The sad fact for the liberals is the Republicans do not care about them. Anyone who hates George W. Bush so passionately probably would never vote Republican anyway, so the potential loss of votes is minimal. The fact is that conservatives love the Bush name like a trusted brand. Many conservatives will instinctively vote for any ballot entry where that name appears.

With Rudy Giuliani and Jeb Bush on the ticket, the Republicans will be incredibly strong in 2008, and they will need to be. Hillary Clinton could be an incredibly strong candidate if the conditions are right for her and she chooses her running mate wisely. If you are not scared of Hillary yet, just look in the mirror and slowly say, “President Hillary Clinton. President Hillary Clinton. President Hillary Clinton.” She just might materialize behind you like Bloody Mary.

Rudy Giuliani Is Best Pick to Defeat Hillary Clinton in 2008

Assuming that the Democrats nominate Hillary Clinton for 2008, the Republican will have to reach for the stars to pull out a win.

John McCain is most frequently mentioned as the Republican presidential nominee for 2008. McCain does have enough clout to beat Hillary, but he is a little risky. McCain is unpredictable and has alienated a lot of Republicans. John McCain can certainly energize moderates, but he will have a very difficult time energizing the Republican base. After all, elephants are known for long memories, and McCain has angered a lot of elephants.

Rudy Giuliani is the clear Republican choice for President for one main reason: Rudy Giuliani can beat Hillary Clinton. After 9/11, Giuliani, arose as a great leader. His bravery and bold leadership as Mayor after the 9/11 attack gave him national recognition and respect. Since 9/11, Giuliani has had a very high profile and draws massive crowds wherever he goes. Giuliani always has the common man on his side. Even the Democrats that do not like Giuliani’s politics, still respect him as a man.

A significant factor that makes Rudy Giuliani a strong contender for 2008 is that he can take New York’s electoral votes. If the Republicans win New York, they will almost definitely win the nation. The Democrats simply cannot spare New York’s electoral votes.

Giuliani is also very popular among the California moderates, and his popularity will put California’s huge block of electoral votes in play. The Democrats cannot win the nation without California, and they will have to spend a massive amount of campaign money to secure the state.

Rudy Giuliani’s biggest problem is that he is a moderate. The Republican conservatives are going to begin grumbling when they start learning about Giuliani’s liberal positions on social issues. A lot of conservatives are not going to like Giuliani, so the GOP will need to find someone to appease that huge portion of the base. Fortunately, the Republicans do have several potential vice-presidential candidates with conservative appeal.

The big unknown with Giuliani is his past. Giuliani has never faced intense scrutiny over his private life. The Republicans’ biggest worry will be what skeletons Giuliani has in his closet. Giuliani has already raised some eyebrows with his past marriage, and New York has a shameful tradition of political corruption. Even if Rudy Giuliani himself has not been involved in any of the corruption, it is probable that some of his associates have been connected to some unseemly dealings. Scandals can sink campaigns, and the Republicans need to know what might be coming at them when the press starts sifting through the past few decades of Giuliani’s life.

If Giuliani’s hands are fairly clean, he should be a spectacular candidate. The Republicans are going to need someone big to keep Hillary Clinton from getting back into the White House.

The Patriot Act and the GOP

Are the Republicans right on the Patriot Act, or are they hurting the rights and privacy of American citizens?

<category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="George W. Here are a few questions to consider.

If America tortures terrorists, will it deter potential terrorists from attacking Americans?

Does legalized torture of terrorists hurt America’s international standing?

Does legalized torture of terrorists put our troops in more or less jeopardy?

Is the torture of terrorists beneath the dignity of America?

If we had captured Mohammed Atta, at 11:00PM on September 10, 2001, would it have been okay to torture him to find out which flights his fellow terrorist were going to hijack?

If a terrorist group hid a dirty bomb somewhere in Manhattan, and the FBI had one hour find it, would it be okay to use torture to find the bomb?

Please think about these questions and post your thoughts, by clicking on Comments below.

President Arnold Schwarzenegger: Article II of the Constitution Is All That Is Saving Us

I should begin by giving credit where credit is due. Arnold Schwarzenegger took on the office of Governor during a serious economic and political crisis in California. Governor Gray Davis had been an abysmal failure, and California was in shambles. Governor Schwarzenegger quickly moved in and rescued California, putting it back on the path to its former greatness.

Governor Schwarzenegger’s spectacular success in California is what makes him so dangerous. As soon as people began to realize that Schwarzenegger is not the big-screen muscle-head they thought he was and that he actually does have the brains and talent to run one of the largest economies in the world, they began whispering about what a great President he would be.

Most of the elements are in place for Governor Schwarzenegger. He is charismatic. He is wealthy. He is well connected. He has a proven track record of success, and he has a name that is known by almost every potential voter in America. There is only one thing missing: eligibility.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria, and Article II of the United States Constitution prohibits foreign-born citizens from serving as President. For many people the realities of Article II are crushing. They would love to see a President Arnold Schwarzenegger. Fortunately, the United States Constitution will make that extraordinarily difficult.

Governor Schwarzenegger is an excellent Republican for California, because he is liberal enough to hold power in that left-learning state, but he is still loyal enough to his party that the Republicans do not have to worry about him doing too much irreversible damage to the California Republicans.

While Governor Schwarzenegger may be great for a California, he would be awful for America. If taken to a national scale, Schwarzenegger’s liberal social policies would result in a massive surge in the size and scope of the Federal government. We would have a large taxpayer funded program for almost every conceivable problem. Most politicians would never have the power to get all of these disastrous programs passed thorough Congress, but Governor Schwarzenegger is not like most politicians. His powers of persuasion and ability to get the populace on his side would make him a juggernaut in D.C. No Senator or Congressman would stand a chance against blocking Schwarzenegger’s initiatives. In short, Schwarzenegger would get his way on almost everything, making him one of the most powerful Presidents in history. His liberal policies would sail through Congress and become the law of the land, increasing the Federal government’s influence in our lives for generations.

Fortunately, as the law now stands, America is being spared this fate by Article II. Our Founding Fathers were truly brilliant when they drafted the United States Constitution. Hopefully, our modern-day leaders will not dare to assume that their wisdom is greater than the framers of the greatest political document ever created.

Alternative Minimum Tax Delay Exposes Republican Priorities

Another year has gone by without the Republicans managing to retool the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). Bush Is the Future of the GOP

America’s changing demographics is creating some harsh realities for the Republicans. America was once mostly White; however, this is rapidly changing with the growing Black population and the exploding numbers of the Latinos. Furthermore, the Baby Boomers are turning silver in droves, and Generation X is starting to move into positions of power. Most of what we have known since World War II is going to change. America twenty years from now will be radically different from the country we know now.

Given these inevitable changes, the Republicans need to look to a different future. They have to stop mining the Baby Boomers for candidates and start developing the next generation of leaders.

George Prescott Bush fits the bill for the Republican Party’s next generation of leaders. George P. Bush was born in 1976, which makes him part of the vital Generation X. He is half Mexican and half White, which should make him attractive to both minorities and Whites. With a law degree from the University of Texas, he is well educated in political science. Fortunately, George P. Bush has charisma and looks like a leader. He has performed well in public appearances and seems comfortable in the spotlight.

George Prescott Bush’s most valuable asset, however, is his name. His great grandfather, Prescott Bush was a Senator. His grandfather, George H. W. Bush, and uncle, George W. Bush, have both served as President. His father, Jeb Bush, has been a highly successful two-term Governor in Florida and also has an excellent chance of becoming President in the near future.

If George P. Bush can keep his nose clean, he is an obvious choice for the future of the Republican Party and needs to be groomed for a big future. America has already put two George Bushes in the Oval Office. If the Republicans are smart, they will get busy preparing to make George P. Bush the third one.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://greatredabyss.blogspot.com/2005/12/george-p-bush-is-future-of-gop.html' title='George P. This is mainly because the Republican Party is full of wimps, but it also has a lot to with an infestation of odious beasts known as RINOs.

RINOs are Republicans in Name Only. These are moderates or liberals who have chosen to take on the label of Republican for the sake of political convenience; however, they govern as if they were Democrats. They tend to support the Democrat platform. They vote with Democrats, and they will often band together to block Republican Party initiatives. Sadly, these RINOs are more effective than Democrats in obstructing the Republicans.

Prominent RINOs are Olympia Snowe, Arlen Specter, Lincoln Chafee, Susan Collins, Christopher Shays, Michael Bloomberg, Christine Todd Whitman, et al. Given the beliefs and practices of these people, they have much more in common with Democrats than with Republicans. The only mystery is why they just do not leave the party and join their comrades on the other side of the aisle.

In 2001, Jim Jeffords felt he no longer belonged in the Republican Party, so he left to become an Independent. At least we can respect Jeffords for coming out of the closet and officially breaking ranks with the Republicans. Why don’t the other RINOs follow Jeffords’ lead? Wouldn’t it just be better for them to be free of the party they disagree with so strongly? Wouldn’t the Republicans be able to function better without them as a solid minority instead of a fractured pseudo-majority?

Dear RINOs, it is time to take a stand. Leave the Republican Party and become Independents. Or, better yet, start a new moderate party. The two-party system does not seem to be working very well. Maybe a third party of moderate centrists is the answer. Certainly, there are many disgruntled moderate Democrats that would love to join you.

White House Christmas Card Snubs Christmas

The 2005 Christmas card from the White House simply wishes the recipients a Happy Holiday Season.
