This is low – stealing a puppy from someone’s yard? Got this message from Kirsten:

Someone in a red car stole my sister’s Boxer puppy, Bella, out of her yard. I was wondering if maybe you could post some pictures of her and ask everyone to keep an eye out for her? She’s 6 months old, brindle, and wearing a pink camo collar. My sister, her adult boxer, and my niece are all distraught. I don’t know what kind of terrible person steals a family member like that, but we’d really like Bella to come home safe. Anyone with info can call at 788-9624.

Hope someone spots Bella and gets her back home.

UPDATE: got this happy e-mail from Kirsten a few minutes ago:
“Great news! We were up at the animal shelter this AM putting up a flyer and while we were there, a lady called in saying she had found a boxer puppy…. and it was Bella! So we met up with her and now Bella is home safe and sound. ”

Stumbled across a unique business here in Great Falls: the Pink Ladies Cleaning Service! Gotta give ‘em some love for their name. Wonder if they wear Pink Ladies outfits like the gals in “Grease?”

Not sure where they are from, or why they were in Great Falls (something work-related, apparently), but it’s cool that Sandy & Genevieve blogged about their visit! They offer some commentary about the charms of our community, and they posted some pictures (even a turtle!) – including this very embarrassing sign at Wendy’s on 10th Avenue South.

Local vs National

The debate over local versus national eateries will never be resolved, and this Trib article is sure to provoke some debate. People who don’t like “chain” restaurants or fast-food will take the opportunity to bash them, and the “local” supporters will cite it as evidence that we don’t have “too many” fast-food eateries. Here’s the bottom line:

Per capita, Great Falls actually has the fewest number of fast-food chains compared to Montana’s other major cities. Counting just the major fast food locations — Wendy’s, Arby’s, McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, and Dairy Queen — Great Falls has 14 fast-food retailers, or one for every 4,200 people. Kalispell has the most fast food with per capita, with one eatery for every 1,600 people.

For the record – and most of you know this already – I love both local AND national. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

I love tucking into a nice Mongolian BBQ meal at 3-D, or enjoying a campfire steak at Eddie’s, or downing a dog at the Downtown Dog House, or pulling in to Ford’s Drive-In, tossing back a Howard’s pizza, or (best of all!) scarfing down a HAYSTACK at Goode’s!

But I also enjoy McDonald’s fries, an occasional “pizza pizza” (and Crazy Bread!) from Little Caesar’s, and once in a great while even check in at Chili’s.

So the correct answer to the local versus chain question is: BOTH.

Eight Years!

I was having so much over the weekend that I didn’t realize until a few minutes ago that Saturday marked my eight-year anniversary of arriving in Great Falls!

I’ve said it before, and I will repeat it here: thank you, Great Falls, for being such a wonderful community. That goes for all of it – the people, the leaders, the scenery, the events, the climate (!), the geese – everything!

The Rocking K Bar in Carter, formerly the Carter Bar! Very nice inside, and the new owner Tamara and barman Shane were pure Montana-friendly. Didn’t eat on this outing – just downed a couple of lemonades – but we’ll be back soon to try the ribeye steak (vittles!).

Jack reminds us that it’s been 48 years since Malmstrom became a missile base, and adds:

I hope the Air Force and communities across Montana plan a big event for July 2012 which will be the 50th anniversary of the first missile going into the ground here in Montana. Many folks have passed through the gates of Malmstrom AFB over the years. It would be a heck of a reunion.

I’m picturing a huge Minuteman-shaped cake with 50 mini-missile candles.
