Founded by farmers in 1988 the Blackberry Patch makes small batch, high-quality, goods using real fruits and family recipes. This yummy syrup is handcrafted in Thomasville, Georgia along with rest of their line of jams, jellies and syrups. Did we mention a portion of their profits go to charity?

One thing to note is this syrup is very thick. I recommend heating up some on the stove first. I found this at my local Publix, but you can also buy this on their website. I’m looking forward to trying their Apple Butter Syrup or their Maple Praline Sugar Free Syrup next.

Have you ever imagined that it would be possible to drive a nice, powerful car and yet be green? It seemed like impossible in the past but now this is more than palpable reality. Now that is out there why anyone not wish to try it out? Actually, the concept of hybrid cars has been around for much longer than most of us think but many of us have discovered it with modern cars that immediately attract your attention. Here are top five ecofriendly reasons why switching to a hybrid car is such a good idea.

Reduction in the Emission of Toxic Fumes

The most important reason why anyone should want to purchase and drive a hybrid car is represented by their environmentally friendly features. These are especially designed to decrease the emission of toxic fumes encountered in the case of conventional cars. There is nothing too complicated to understand about the way in which these cars operate. The hybrid car simply reduce the amount of gas required to power up the car through a smart combination of gasoline and electricity engines. This way you get a strong car, enjoy the thrills of driving and keep the environment clean for yourself and the other people surrounding you.

Enjoy the Drive in a Green Environment

The reduction of emissions released by this type of vehiclesenables the driver to keep a green environment surrounding him while still enjoying the drive. Tests have proven that hybrid cars manage to produce 50 percent less dioxide emission than conventional ones so the greenhouse effect is seriously reduced which is great for all of us as Earth inhabitants. Getting better mileage is an added benefit in the case of hybrid cars. The air emission of smog-forming pollutants is reduced by 90% by the smartest hybrid cars. These modern models also manage to cut carbon dioxide emissions in half.

Efficient to Drive in Town and in the Countryside

The environment is important both in the countryside and in towns. No matter where you are driving a hybrid car will make sure you do not affect the surroundings by polluting them with the emissions of your car. The early models of hybrid cars were even considered better than conventional ones in the case of stop-and-start city traffic actions. Why is that? Because their electric motor generated much more electricity whenever the brake pedal used to be hit thus ensuring hast acceleration at lower speeds afterwards without the need to use gas.

Efficient Modern Hybrid Batteries

Modern cars have also assed though various stages and tests before they become as powerful as they are now. Many modern models of hybrid cars now come equipped with more efficient betters and powerful electric motors that enable them to go faster without the constant worry of remaining powerless yet keep the environment cleaner with every new step you take. There is no longer even significant difference between long runs and short ones. Now you can get around 50 mpg on the highway or just getting around the town in your hybrid car without any risks. All you have to do is enjoy your eco-friendly ride!

Luxury and Convenience

Hybrid cars do not only look great and help you keep up to your eco-friendly principles even when driving but also come equipped with amazing convenience features you should know about. Modern hybrid cars now include rearview cameras, amazing heating seats as well as Bluetooth capacity and numerous other technological inventions that make them a great choice. You can now have everything you want in a hybrid car the same as in the case of conventional ones and an added benefit: preserve the environment unpolluted which is something that we should all care about because it highly influences the quality of life for whole humankind.

Hybrid cars are a wonderful alternative these days. They look great, they have sufficient power and come with the essential non-polluting features that help you enjoy your drives in a healthy environment for yourself and other people living around you. Great operating costs and modern features incorporated in new models of hybrid cars will make you fall in love with them in an instant. Just give them a spin!

This feed comes from Green Behavior
The specific article's link is: 11 Small Habits that are Destroying the Environment

We all have habits, some good and some bad. When it comes to conservation and the environment, often times we have many more bad habits than good.

Although this list may seem like not a big deal to you, think about if everyone in the world did the same as you? Wasted resources, polluted the earth, and the like. Because even if it seems so minute on a personal level, when an entire society (or the majority) takes part in bad environmental habits; they seriously add up.

Here we list 11 small (yet huge) habits that are destroying and killing the environment. Hopefully this list makes you conscious of them, and next time you come across them you will correct it and do the opposite of bad and choose a greener alternative.

1. Running the dishwasher when it’s not full

Running a dishwasher that is not full is practically putting tons of water and resources to waste. Unless your dishwasher is old and needs less items in it to clean thoroughly, waiting to fill your dishwasher entirely can be a great way to get the most efficient usage out of your machine.

This is the same as a laundry machine; while you can’t overfill it, you don’t want to underfill it either and waste a lot of resources like water and electricity.

Note: A lot of dishwashers and laundry machines these days are outdated and inefficient in the first place; if you can, you might want to switch to newer and more efficient ones.

2. Using non-reusable plastic water bottles

I don’t know which is worse; wasting money on non-reusable plastic water bottles or the fact that plastic water bottles typically end up in landfills. Think about this for a second…

If you drink 2 bottles of water a day, everyday for a year, that adds up to 1,0 95 bottles. Now imagine if only 75% of those actually got recycled and 25% didn’t. You would end up with approximately 274 bottles that ended up in a landfill or worse, the wild.

All of this could be avoided and even money could be saved simply by investing in a quality reusable water bottle. They average around $10 for a decent one, and the benefits are endless.

3. Eating meat all too often

Although I don’t see everyone ending their meat eating habits entirely, all of the time, I think it is totally possible to go just one day a week without it. This is typically referred to as “Meatless Mondays” and it’s the day of the week a lot of people choose to go without meat.

There is no specific reason behind the day Monday except for the fact that meatless and Monday sound good together.

To inspire you to downsize your intake of meat, here’s an interesting fact for you. To produce beef it requires almost 2,000 gallons of water to make per pound. Not per animal or anything, but for a single pound of it. If those numbers don’t scare you, I’m not sure what will!

4. Too lazy to recycle

Have you ever found yourself in a situation in which your laziness overcame your love for the environment? Laziness is very powerful, and if you let it get to you then you might see yourself saying “this one time won’t hurt” when it comes to not recycling something.

Take the extra step, find a recycle bin, and put your recyclables in there. If you do this, your environmental impact will be lessened.

5. Driving to close places

If you have to go somewhere that is rather close (less than a few miles), what’s the harm in walking or riding a bike?

If you are going on a small errand, work, or over a friends, consider walking or taking a bike if you can. If that isn’t possible and if you aren’t consumed in pride, you might want to consider the bus or carpooling.

6. Keeping spam email

Believe it or not, your email inbox is generating a carbon footprint. Although regular email that you actually want produces a carbon footprint, it is much lower than that of sending snail mail.

But when we consider spam email being something we don’t want at all yet we ignore it and simply delete it, we aren’t doing the earth a favor. By taking a few minutes everyday, unsubscribing from spam emails, you can slowly reduce the carbon footprint of your inbox.

7. Consuming content physically rather than digitally

Instead of reading the newspaper, how about going online and getting the digital version?

Instead of reading a magazine from the store, why not go check it out online too?

The content we find in physical stores can typically be found online too. So instead of spending money and wasting paper, check out the web beforehand and save yourself and the earth from the waste.

8. Forgetting (or not having) reusable bags

Reusable bags are getting cheaper and cheaper, and if you don’t really care about the design of them you can get them for just a dollar each.

Although plastic and paper bags are free at more stores, do you know where those bags end up? The ocean, forests, and even in your community. The cost is cheap to pick up enough reusable bags for your typical grocery store trip, and they will greatly reduce the harmful bags being let loose into the world.

9. Using products with microbeads

Microbeads are often found in hygiene products which are there to help exfoliate in face cleansers, clean better in toothpastes, and so on.

These microbeads are actually creating very bad situations to the water sources they end up in. They are soaking up toxins, ending up in water sources with other life in them, and affecting marine life in a very big way.

Try avoiding products with microbeads, and if you need something like it in your products; be sure to get ones that break down while and after you use them.

10. Leaving your lights on

While leaving a light on doesn’t seem like it will waste much energy, it really does add up just like everything else on this list does.

Especially if you have older technology lighting products like CFL or Fluorescent in your lighting fixtures, you could be using 50% more energy than you would if you had LED products in place. Educating everyone and yourself on the benefits of new technology lighting along with turning lights off when they aren’t in use is huge when it comes to energy conservation.

Takeway from this: Turn off lights when they aren’t in use and upgrade your lighting systems to new technology like LED, which will reduce your lighting energy usage up to 75%.

11. Not bring your knowledge to work

For some reason the urge to be environmentally friendly goes out of the drain when we go to a job that doesn’t actively promote green activities.

Taking the first step and pushing your environmentally conscious decisions while you go to work is the first step. Secondly, advocating for a greener company is the next step to get the entire company on board. From there, they will be able to take even bigger steps to reduce waste that you can’t do yourself, like replacing old inefficient appliances and technology!

Conclusion

To sum it all up, there you have 11 small (but very large) habits that you are probably doing that is killing the environment. Advocating and implementing the change of these habits daily is the main key to turning societies bad habits into good and conscious ones.

If you have any other habits we need to change or should be aware of, share them with us in the comments down below! We’d love to start a conversation about this, so don’t be afraid to do so, all thoughts are welcome.

Staying abreast of market trends is crucial for any business to succeed, and thanks to millennials’ interest in eco-friendly living the latest innovations in the packaging industry have all got a sustainable edge. Today it’s been discovered in a survey by Cone Communications that 9 out of 10 millennials would switch brands to one associated with social or environmental issues. So, in order to keep this new wave of customers happy what sustainable packaging products can be adopted?

Customers want to see sustainable information

Today, customers prioritize sustainability and The A.P.P discovered in a recent study just how many of us are looking for transparency in packaging products.

57% would like to see whether the packaging is derived from recyclable materials.

43% would like to see if the packaging is made from renewable sources.

25% of Americans want to know if the packaging material is made from deforestation-free sources.

What packaging materials are sustainable?

There are many products businesses can adopt with ease that can help with their carbon footprint, and many are already utilizing these without knowing of their benefits.

Inflatable Plastic Packaging

Plastic has been a firm favourite in the packaging industry for years, thanks to its lightweight and durable nature. However, with one plastic bag taking 20-1000 years to decompose there’s a huge need for sustainable alternatives.

Thanks to technological innovation, protective plastics are now able to be recycled. Airpack packaging systems offer inflatable plastic packaging which is 100% recyclable. What’s more, unlike bubble wrap, which when delivered in bulk is cumbersome, this inflatable packaging is delivered flat, and is inflated by the user. This has a positive impact on the earth as more of the product can be delivered in one shipment, reducing carbon emissions from multiple deliveries.

Seaweed Packaging

Plastic is the one material that we love to use in packaging, but unlike glass and paper it cannot be recycled indefinitely. However, innovation is constant and there are new products being invented that act like plastic, but can be disposed of in a completely natural way; Agar is derived from red seaweed and dissolves in boiling water. Since the product is derived from the ocean, it causes no harm when it disposed of it there, unlike traditional plastic. In the future this is looking to replace traditional plastic bags.

Source: WDKA

Styrofoam Alternatives

Polystyrene or Styrofoam is a heat resistant packaging material that also resists composing. It’s often seen in food containers and as a void filler in the packaging industry. However, when left in landfills this product leaks toxins into the earth for thousands of years damaging the environment. This product is well-known for breaking into small pieces and endangering wildlife and polluting the earth with the emissions used in its manufacture.

Mushroom Packaging

Industry giants are trailblazing with sustainability, and tech company Dell are no exception. Their commitment to the environment can be seen in their adoption of “mushroom packaging”. This product is innovational, biodegradable plastic-like technology created by EcoActive. The material is manufactured naturally by feeding mushroom roots known as “mycelium” agricultural waste. The material has similar properties to Styrofoam but is completely recyclable and doesn’t hold the same the negative environmental impacts.

Nuts about Sustainability

Packaging innovations grow each year, and the latest sustainable trend is to use waste materials that would typically be incinerated to create new products. Confectionary company Ferrero use 70,000 hazelnuts a year, and with that comes waste hazelnut shells. The hazelnuts shells are treated to eliminate their allergenic properties, milled and repurposed as paperboard to be used in Ferrero’s packaging. This packaging is still in the development stages, but these innovative ideas give us a glimpse of the future of sustainability.

Sustainable Options for Small Businesses

Of course, seaweed, mushroom packaging and the development of by-product waste packaging is only available for industries that have large budgets to spend on their packaging solutions, but smaller companies can adopt materials such as loose fill chips, inflatable packaging and recycled cardboard boxes in a bid to lower their environmental impact. What’s more, investing in recycled products in bulk can cost less than virgin alternatives.

Adopting sustainable options early can impact greatly on the planet and your brand’s PR, consumers are becoming far more eco-savvy with 52% of consumers in a Neilson survey saying their decision to buy is influenced by to the social responsibility of the company.

When it comes to the environment, few things are as notoriously harmful as vehicles. Famous for their carbon emissions, the move to a greener method of transportation has been a long term goal for many people. Now, with discussions of fully electric vehicles and driverless cars, much of this technology seems to be at the precipice of becoming widely adopted.

So, with this in mind, how green are today’s cars? Needless to say it is not a perfect technology so, if there are any areas that aren’t completely green or sustainable, it helps to know what you can do to improve the situation.

The Greenest Cars Available

The best example of a green car right now is the infamous Tesla 3. As an electric vehicle, or EV for short, this vehicle offers a zero-emission fuel source. Of course, this is in theory at least, as there are a few additional factors you might want to consider.

First of all, these vehicles use lithium-ion batteries. While this is certainly better than using fossil fuels on a regular base, lithium is not easy to collect. While this isn’t ideal, the batteries can at least be recycled. As long as demand doesn’t outweigh supply, this arguably represents some deal of sustainability.

Secondly, as a driver, you have more control over where your energy comes from. An EV uses power like any other electrical appliance, so how that power is generated will somewhat improve or decrease the car’s green status. For instance, if you’re sure your provider is using renewable energy like wind and solar power, than you’re charging your EV with a green fuel source. If your provider still uses coal or other unsustainable sources, then your EV is arguably contributing to more emissions.

The Price Divide

Another issue many people have with EVs is there availability and price range. Many of these vehicles are relatively new to the market, so their price is rather high, even when purchased as a second-hand car. Just look at the Tesla 3, with an asking price of around $35,000, which is certainly outside many people’s budgets.

As a compromise, there are some great hybrid cars available, but these have a mix of fossil fuel and electric power sources. Many of these vehicles only use the petrol or diesel engine for higher speeds, so this might be a perfectly viable green car for inner city driving. While these are cheaper than EVs, Edmunds reports that hybrid cars cost more than petrol cars by around 20%.

On the other hand, if you own a diesel powered car, you might be able to swap to biodiesel, which is one of the more popular alternative car fuels. This is legal in many countries, including America, and, as long as you stick to the regulations, you can even make biofuel at home. Just check that your diesel particulate filter is in the tail pipe, rather than the exhaust system cylinders. The former can often handle pure biofuel, the latter can not. Even if this isn’t an option, many commercial diesel fuels contain some percentage of biodiesel, so a wiser choice at the pumps can still improve the green status of your vehicle.

It’s Not Just The Car That Matters

It is also worth remembering that your choice of car, as well as its fuel source, are not the only green areas you should concern yourself with. When it comes to the daily use and maintenance of the car, there are a few areas worth improving.

First of all, being efficient with your fuel economy helps to save on fuel, as well as money. Even on an EV, using less electricity is still a good thing (especially if you’re unsure of how your electricity is generated). This is an entire topic in itself, but driving at 55mph (where possible and legally allowed) and bringing your car to a natural halt (rather than excessive braking) are two areas that can be easily adopted.

To support this, you can also improve your car’s dynamics and resistance. Excess weight simply uses up more fuel, so an overburdened vehicle isn’t exactly as green as it can be.The same logic can also be applied to your choice of tires. Pick tyres with low rolling resistance for a better fuel consumption rate.

Furthermore, when it comes to tyres and other car parts, these are still produced like any other product. Most car parts can be recycled and it is often vital that you do so. Tyre rubber, for instance, has a variety of uses and is often in great demand, while car parts have various metals. Even ‘green’ parts need to be recycled. A catalyst converter, for instance, contains rare earth metals such as rhodium, palladium and platinum. The fact is, nearly all car parts can be recycled, including rubber, glass, plastic and metal components. Just make sure you send your old parts (and car) to the right recycling industry, rather than just dropping the entire vehicle off at a scrap yard.

Some companies are already achieving some success in this area. Ford, for instance, produces at least 30,000 F-150 truck bodies from recycled aluminium each month. Recycling is entirely viable in the automotive industry, but it requires existing car owners to recycle their own cars to help sustain this demand for material.

When all your gadgets, school supplies, mini fridge and other collegiate essentials are confined to a 230-square-foot dorm, converting this limited space into an eco-friendly hangout might be the least of your concerns. Not to mention that juggling a hectic academic schedule, active social calendar and shoestring budget doesn’t leave much latitude for environmental consciousness. Fortunately though, making these simple changes will help you “go green” without straining your wallet, routine or living arrangements.

Unplug Electronics When Not in Use

Instead of leaving your laptop, cell phone charger, light fixtures, and bathroom or kitchen appliances plugged in constantly, remember to power down and disconnect these devices after you’ve finished using them. Appliances continue drawing energy from electrical outlets even when they’re turned off, so eliminate this unnecessary waste by connecting all your electronics to a surge protector, then flip the switch before leaving a room.

Find Alternatives to Disposable Products

Swap out your reliance on plastic water bottles in favor of the reusable stainless steel or aluminum varieties. Bring a durable canvas tote to the grocery store rather than using the supermarket’s disposable bags. Take notes on your computer or mobile tablet instead of wasting excess paper, notebooks and index cards. Developing these sustainable habits will reduce the amount of garbage you produce throughout each semester.

Organize an Earth Day Planting Event

Each year on April 29th, people around the world celebrate Arbor Day by spearheading environmental conservation efforts in their communities. You can participate in this eco-friendly movement by enlisting friends, classmates or club members to plant trees around your college’s green spaces. After obtaining consent from the administration, register as a member of the Arbor Day Foundation for $10 & they’ll give you 10 free flowering trees.

Walk or Bike to Classes & Activities

Not only will leaving those car keys in your parents’ garage save you money on both gas and parking decals, commuting on foot or two wheels can significantly decrease fossil fuel emissions into the atmosphere. Petroleum powered vehicles release carbon dioxide which exacerbates the hazardous impact of climate change, so utilize your dorm’s public access bicycle racks or take advantage of the pedestrian trails around campus.

Choose Energy Efficient Bedside Lamps

For those midnight cramming sessions throughout finals week, invest in a cordless portable lamp to store near your bed. Make sure you purchase a type that operates on compact fluorescent (CFL) or LED bulbs, which conserve wattage more effectively than standard bulbs. Keeping this device on-hand will minimize the need to run your overhead lights all night, then potentially fall asleep without remembering to flip that switch.

Start a Recycling Program on Campus

Sharing close quarters with several roommates will inevitably create a surplus of trash, but in a dorm setting, the incentive to recycle is often undermined by the convenience of a chute or dumpster. However, you can encourage your university to adopt sustainable options and resources for students by placing recycle bins in residential, classroom and recreational facilities.

Opt for Used Textbooks Each Semester

Rather than paying exorbitant fees for newly printed books that contribute to wasteful paper manufacturing, order pre-owned editions online. As paper consumption escalates, partially due to these textbook industry demands, global deforestation will become a growing concern. Instead, buy your reading materials secondhand, then sell them to fellow students, a local bookstore or over the internet marketplace when the semester is finished.

The academic, financial and lifestyle demands of higher education shouldn’t prevent you from embracing sustainable habits throughout your daily routine. Not only are these strategies virtually effortless to implement, they will create a foundation for eco-friendly living even after you’ve graduated from college. So, how do you “go green,” while balancing that on-the-go pace of campus activity? Share your tips in the comment section below!

The specific article's link is: Infographic: The Scale of Deforestation

Our planet is currently losing over 15 billion trees a year. That’s the equivalent to a football field every 1.4 seconds. Deforestation is clearing the earth’s forests at an alarming rate and that’s why Earth Day this year is all about Trees for the Earth.

The good news if that over the past 25 years the rate of global deforestation has slowed down by more than 50 percent but that still isn’t enough. Some predictions state that rainforests of the world will be destroyed completely if deforestation continues at its current pace. In fact if deforestation continues at its current pace, we will lose an area the size of California in just over three years – and in fifteen years, an area the size of Mexico.

We all know the effects of deforestation but what can we do about it? One easy way to help is to get involved with Earth Day and plant a tree. Although Earth Day has been and gone this year, it’s more than just one day. Over the next four years Earth Day is calling upon us to redress the balance by helping plant trees. One tree might not seem like much, but with more than one billion people involved with Earth Day this year, we can make big things happen!

But it doesn’t stop there. You can take it one step further by making sure the choices you make at home, at school, or at work don’t contribute to the problem. Here’s what else you can do:

1. Go paperless. This means opting out of junk mail lists, signing up for e statements, paying bills online and sending e-greeting cards.

2. Use reusable coffee cups in the office.

3. Take a tote bag to the grocery store.

4. Recycle and buy recycled products. Today there is a variety of recycled items, including notebook paper, books, toilet paper, and shopping bags available. When people use recycled products and make a conscious effort not to waste, the demand for new raw material to replace these items can decrease. It’s as simple as that.

On top of all that, why not become an advocate of reforestation? Learn how you can spread the word or lend your support to organizations that concentrate on the preservation of forest habitats and join the fight for the future of our planet.

We all have a responsibility to be more environmentally friendly and it is possible however small the contribution seems. With the advent of global warming and inclement and erratic weather patterns, it is not something that we can simply ignore. 2015 was the hottest year on record on the planet so the worrying signs are not dissipating.

Recycling on a responsible level at home and at work is a great start but you can be environmentally friendly with your choices in the garden also. Being eco-friendly in the garden is achievable with minimal effort and just a little know-how.

Even the fact that you have decided to incorporate some element of gardening is a responsible choice as it might reduce your purchasing of packaged goods from supermarkets and the like, especially if you choose to include something like a vegetable garden.

Becoming more eco-friendly in the garden will be easier than you think. This infographic from Capital Garden Services aims to highlight ways that any gardener can introduce an environmentally friendly element to their garden. It shows how this can be done in a small way or in larger contributions. It also highlights some nice ways of attracting ‘friendly’ visitors to a garden and gives insight into a nice case study situation in London. Check it out below.
