Eco Event to Coincide with Announcement of Singapore’s own Green Product Certification by SGBC

(Singapore, September 06, 2010) – In one week, over 200 exhibiting companies from more than 20 countries internationally will showcase their latest environmentally-friendly building products, technologies, concepts and solutions at BEX Asia 2010, Southeast Asia’s premier Build Eco Xpo.

The three-day expo which is held in Singapore from 13-15 September will showcase major global players like BASF, Carrier, EnGro Corporation Limited, Johnson Controls, KONE, Interface, Sanyo and Trane and many more from the region and beyond including the United States, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand.

The event will be held alongside the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) International Congress 2010 – held for the first time in Asia – and the inaugural Singapore Green Building Council’s (SGBC) ‘Green Building Conference’.

On day two of the event at the 1st Anniversary Dinner of SGBC, the 1st dedicated green building product certification scheme to support the BCA Green Mark Scheme and the Building Industry, will be launched. The criteria for the assessment were formulated by close to 100 building professionals, academia, testing institutes and manufacturers. The Scheme will provide consumers, building industry stakeholders and government procurement system, an excellent listing of robustly assessed and certified green building products.

Singapore expects to see a sustained level of construction demand over the next 2 – 3 years. Singapore’s Building Construction Authority (BCA) has projected that the value of construction contracts to be awarded in 2010 will be between $21 and $27 billion, and between $18 and $25 billion for 2011 and 2012.

“BEX Asia is timely to complement and support the government’s efforts to accelerate and achieve a truly sustainable green environment by 2030,” said Michelle Lim, Managing Director for expo organizers Reed Exhibitions.

Over the last decade, many countries in Southeast Asia have initiated green efforts to ensure a greener and better living environment through the introduction of rating systems.

Malaysia launched a Green Building Index to promote sustainability in the built environment, Indonesia’s Green Building Council has a Greenship rating tool, and The Philippines Green Building Council has a Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE) Programme. Thailand developers have also begun to start adopting international standards such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the US Certification developed by the US Green building Certification Institute.

“The strategic eco-focus of BEX Asia allows exhibitors to present their products and educate potential customers on the benefits of their solutions, including adhering to rating regulations,” Michele added.

BEX Asia 2010 will unveil some of the new Green products, technologies, concepts and solutions such as:

The world’s first climate neutral carpet, Cool Carpet™; and the only modular carpet designed using the principle of biomimicry, the i2™ by Interface, Inc;

Green IT or green computing usually refers to making the data centre and other IT system or equipment more energy efficient, and to reduce the environmental impacts associated with IT, such as recycling of computing equipment.

You can adopt the following Green IT practices on energy efficiency in your organisation’s data centre, energy efficient office equipment, energy saving tips and recycling of used electronic equipment.

.

Energy Efficiency in Data Centre

Your organisation’s data centre uses a substantial amount of energy for power and cooling purposes, especially as computing demand grows in your organisation. It is possible to reduce the energy consumption by optimising the data centre’s performance, efficiency and space through power and cooling analysis, virtualization, and using energy efficient servers. Consult your IT vendor on energy saving solutions for your data centre. You can also visit the Greener Computing website for more news and tips on Green IT.

Here are some Green IT vendors:

APC

Asaiki Technology

Cisco

Dell

Fujitsu

HP

IBM

Sun Microsystems

In the Sustainable Singapore blueprint report published in April 2009, one of the new initiatives by the government is to promote energy efficiency in data centres:

Data centres, server rooms and IT equipment account for a significant amount of energy use in buildings. The government will work with the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry to develop and promote the adoption of green data centre standards that will reduce the power consumption of IT systems. These standards will take into account the ongoing international efforts in this area as well as guidelines and best practices for data centre design, setup and operations. The public sector will also adopt green data centre practices and promote awareness of green data centre benefits among data centre operators in the public sector, develop training and certification programmes for the public and private sector data centre operators, and promote R&D in energy efficient data centres.

Check with the Energy Efficiency Programme Office on the incentives available for Green IT.

.

Energy Efficient Office Equipment

In Singapore, computers, printers and photocopiers are not included under the Energy Label scheme. So if you’re looking for energy efficient computing equipment, you can look for ENERGY STAR qualified equipment instead. The ENERGY STAR is a US labeling program to identify and promote energy efficient products. Find a suitable model from this wide range of ENERGY STAR products.

When buying new computers, choose laptops instead of desktops as a laptop uses less energy. If your organisation needs to buy desktops, choose those with flat panel LCD monitors instead of CRT monitors, as a LCD monitor is more energy efficient and lasts longer. Also remember to choose the right-sized monitor to meet the office’s needs. A bigger monitor uses more energy.

.

Energy Saving Tips

Remember to switch off all the computing equipment when leaving the office or when they are not in use, and don’t leave them on standby mode as the standby mode still consumes energy. Here’s what you can do:

Connect different equipment to a power strip so that you only need to turn off one switch

Use plugin timers to switch off equipment after office hours

Use the power management mode on your computer to turn off the computer after some time of inactivity

Use the free Auto Shutdown software to schedule Windows shut down

When the computing equipment is in use, here’s what you can do to reduce energy consumption:

Set photocopiers, printers and other equipment on energy saving mode

Reduce the brightness of the computers to cut energy consumption as the factory default setting may be brighter than necessary

Disable the computer’s screen saver as the screen-saving mode uses more energy than in standby mode

Use the power management mode on your computer and enable the energy saving features

Use the free Edison software to optimise power settings

.

Recycling

You can recycle your used electronic equipment such as computers and printers through your IT vendor who usually can take them back. If they don’t, check out this guide to electrical and electronic waste recycling at Zero Waste Singapore.

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, total new investment in sustainable energy worldwide reached $162 billion in 2009, nearly four times of 2004. With $65 billion worth of new financial investment in clean energy already registered in the first half of 2010, some 22 percent up on the same six months of 2009, the market seems to be on an upswing. What is significant is the distinct shift in focus from Europe and North America to Asia-Pacific, with a sharp increase in financial investment from $31.3 billion in 2008 to $40.8 billion in 2009. Some $188 billion in government stimulus packages was also allocated to greening and climate change measures in 15 major economies between the autumn of 2008 and early 2010, with Asia-Pacific accounting for over 45 percent of this spending[1].

Powered by such strong growth in the region, the second annual Clean Energy Expo Asia (CEEA) is back, boasting a 50 percent increase in exhibition space and new conference tracks to feed into this growing interest in renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency, as well as smart grid and sustainable mobility solutions.

Buoyed by more clearly defined and expanding clean energy policies as well as the global push for climate change, the Clean Energy Expo Asia 2010 Trade Fair and Conference expects a strong showing with a 30 percent increase in overall participation and an increase of 20 percent in the number of exhibitors represented across the three-day event.

Held on 2-4 November 2010 at the Suntec International Convention & Exhibition Centre in Singapore, this year’s Clean Energy Expo Asia 2010 will provide an important knowledge-sharing platform for leading players in the Technology, Services, Finance and Government sectors to address key issues in renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. Jointly organized by Koelnmesse and the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS), CEEA is the closing anchor for the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), which features a week-long calendar of energy-related trade fairs, conferences and dialogues, expected to draw more than 10,000 participants.

Driving the business of clean energy in Asia

Building on the success of and the interest in last year’s inaugural Trade Fair, Clean Energy Expo Asia 2010 continues to grow from strength to strength. Country pavilions from Brazil, Canada, Europe, Japan and Singapore will showcase the latest in clean energy technologies, services and financing solutions in the key sectors of solar energy, wind, biomass and geothermal. In addition, CEEA will showcase energy-efficient innovations and technologies as well as smart grid solutions.

This year’s Japan Pavilion is proof of Clean Energy Expo Asia’s position as the premier networking and business platform for sustainable energy in the region. Supported and organized by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the official Japan Pavilion grew four-fold compared to last year, featuring a total of 16 Japanese cleantech companies and organizations, and occupying over 250 square meters of exhibition space.

“We feel that the Clean Energy Expo Asia Trade Fair and Conference is a very relevant and timely event that offers Japanese companies great synergy with other like-minded organizations in the region. Clean Energy Expo Asia 2009 provided us with an excellent business networking platform and once again, we look forward to another successful event this year. We are confident that Clean Energy Expo Asia 2010 will help Japanese companies further develop and expand their business beyond Japan and Asia,” Mr. Akihiro Miwa, Director, Business Development & PR, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

With many major car companies adding hybrid and all-electric vehicles to their fleets, the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that expanded production of such vehicles, combined with the purchase incentives available in more and more countries, could put over 5 million such vehicles on the road in the next 10 years[2]. With its finger on the pulse of clean energy trends, this year’s CEEA Trade Fair will feature a new Sustainable Mobility Pavilion, with leading Electric Vehicle (EV) players, such as Audi and EV World (featuring BMW and Porsche), showcasing their innovative EV technologies and cutting-edge EV models.

Forging a vision for the future through in-depth dialogue

Developed in consultation with industry partners and multilateral organizations, such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and SEAS, this year’s CEEA conference continues to engage key players to address trends in clean energy markets, policies, and financing as well as developments in sustainable energy technology in the Asia-Pacific region.

New to the Clean Energy Expo Asia 2010 Conference is the Sustainable Mobility Roundtable Discussion, which will see industry players, such as the Energy Market Authority, the Land Transport Authority, GE Energy, and EV World, come together to discuss the regulatory evolution and the measures needed to stimulate investment from the public and private sectors in regional and global sustainable mobility markets.

Spread across three days, the conference program will feature sessions on Clean Energy Market Outlook in Asia, Renewable Energy and Smart Grid Technologies, Energy Efficiency, as well as Clean Energy Projects and Financing. It will feature over 100 international speakers, including notable industry experts such as Mr. Dilip R. Limaye, President & CEO, SRC Global Inc., and Senior Advisor, The World Bank; Mr. Michael Liebreich, CEO, Bloomberg New Energy Finance; Dr. Bartosz Wojszczyk, Global Smart Grid Technical Leader, GE Energy; Prof. Joachim Luther, CEO, Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore; and Mr. Michael Kelly, Deputy Managing Director and Director, Market Development World LP Gas Association.

“The days of inexpensive, convenient, abundant, conventional energy sources are nearing an end. Policy changes, forward-thinking technology innovations, cultural changes and significant investment are key requisites for a new, sustainable energy future. Through Clean Energy Expo Asia, we provide a comprehensive platform for organizations, industry players and key stakeholder organizations in the region to come together in order to enact change and drive the transition to alternative energy economies and societies across Asia-Pacific.“ Mr. Michael Dreyer, Vice President, Asia Pacific, Koelnmesse.

Last year’s Clean Energy Expo Asia featured over 70 exhibitors and drew 3,500 participants from 45 countries. For more information on Clean Energy Expo Asia, please visit www.cleanenergyexpoasia.com.

As of July 2010, the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) has registered over 2,300 CDM projects globally, an increase of more than 35 percent over a year ago. More than three-quarters of these projects are registered in Asia and the Pacific, spelling once again the abundant opportunities in the region’s carbon trading markets.

With the Kyoto protocol nearing its expiration date in 2012, climate change negotiators are focusing their attention on reaching a definitive agreement for a global fight against climate change. These, and other exciting developments in the emissions trading and global carbon markets will be the centerpiece of the discussions at the fifth edition of CARBON FORUM ASIA, from 27 – 28 October 2010 in Singapore.

Returning with an even more incisive conference program and comprehensive trade fair, CARBON FORUM ASIA 2010 will once again bring together representatives from more than 50 countries in a key gathering prior to the climate change talks in Cancun, Mexico, at the end of this year. As the Carbon Market continues to grow and the need for a new international treaty becomes more intense, the leading Trade Fair and Conference in Asia is expecting to welcome some 1,000 international participants over the two days.

“Asia has dominated the supply side of the global carbon market over its short but dynamic history,” said Henry Derwent, President and CEO of the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA). “But key Asian countries are now on the brink of adopting emissions trading; so investors and market players must now gauge Asian demand as well as supply. CARBON FORUM ASIA is the place where the experts set out the trends and the politics that will define what could be the most exciting new market of the 21st century”.

ASIA STILL A KEY DRIVER IN GLOBAL CDM MARKET

While China and India account for more than 60 percent of 1,780 registered Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in Asia to date, emerging economies like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines are also notable contributors to the world’s CDM market.

With some 150 international companies and organizations such as Enel, Endesa, Vattenfall, Orbeo, Rhodia Energy Services, TÜV Rheinland, DNV, Baker & Mckenzie and Deutsche Bank expected to be represented at the CARBON FORUM ASIA Trade Fair, visitors to the event will gain a unique and comprehensive perspective of the Carbon Market activities across the globe. Australia, Germany, Japan and Singapore are some of the countries who will be hosting official country pavilions, providing visitors with a more focused view of the carbon market regulations, initiatives and innovations in each country.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will once more continue to gather project owners from developing countries in a special projects pavilion where Carbon Market sellers and traders can easily identify the opportunities available in these economies, while gaining insights into the types of projects dominating the global CDM investment market.

SHAPING ASIA’S ROLE IN THE GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE CHALLENGE

The Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in 2009, which resulted in the Copenhagen Accord, attracted worldwide attention for uncovering the intricacies of a global climate change negotiation. This year, the world is anticipating further progress in Cancun, Mexico, where the 16th Conference of Parties Summit (COP16) will be held.

Held just prior to this important round of climate change talks, CARBON FORUM ASIA continues to play a key role in shaping Asia’s viewpoints and contributions to the global climate change abatement efforts.

With over 130 speakers from key global and regional private and public organizations, and authoritative players in the emissions trading landscape, such as World Resources Institute, WWF, China Clean Development Mechanism Fund Management Center, Malaysia’s Biomass-SP, National Australia Bank, Chevron, Shell, Asian Development Bank, IETA, Japan Bank for International Cooperation, UNFCCC, World Bank, and Mexico as the COP16 Host, the CARBON FORUM ASIA Conference will define the key issues impacting the outcome at Cancun.

Covering topics spanning the latest developments in markets around the world, how Asia will fit into the global market of the future, the role of CDM at a time of global change, climate and carbon financing, venture capital, forestry and renewable energy, the CARBON FORUM ASIA 2010 Conference aims to provide participants with insights into the decisive and critical topics influencing the global discussion on emissions trading and climate change.

THE ASIA-PACIFIC CARBON MARKET CROSSROADs

CARBON FORUM ASIA 2010 is expected to attract about 1,000 participants from across the globe, providing the perfect avenue for networking and exploring further opportunities and innovations in the multi-billion dollar Carbon Market.

“Representing over 75 percent of the share in the CDM market, Asia is the perfect meeting place for Carbon Market professionals and observers to meet and deliberate on the issues impacting the global buying and selling of carbon credits. CARBON FORUM ASIA 2010 will once again provide the leading platform for Asia to showcase the opportunities available in the region, while opening the doors for global Carbon Market investors keen to participate in this robust market,” said Michael Dreyer, Vice President, Asia Pacific, Koelnmesse.

Jointly organized by IETA and Koelnmesse, CARBON FORUM ASIA 2010 will be held on 27 and 28 October at the Raffles City Convention Centre, Singapore. CARBON FORUM ASIA 2010 is the opening anchor for the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), which features a week-long calendar of energy-related trade fairs, conferences and dialogues, expected to draw more than 10,000 participants.

Last year’s CARBON FORUM ASIA showcased over 60 projects and drew 924 participants from 106 countries.

The World Challenge 2010 is a global competition run by BBC World News and Newsweek, in association with Shell, and aims to highlight and reward entrepreneurs and small businesses around the world that bring economic, social and environmental benefits to local communities through innovation and enterprise at a grassroots level.

This year, 12 entrepreneurs from around the world have been announced as finalists. The winner of World Challenge 2010 will receive a US$20,000 grant from Shell while the two runners-up will each receive US$10,000.

World Challenge 2010 Finalists

Denmark: ‘Africa: Cyber Capital’ – MYC4 – inviting people worldwide to connect directly with African entrepreneurs who cannot obtain capital to develop their businesses, allowing African enterprise to attract investment at an interest rate that they are willing to pay.

Guatemala: ‘A Class Apart’ – Tecnico Maya Vocational School – creating better employment and education opportunities in Comalapa. A popular park has already been created, but the goal now is to create a mixed academic and vocational school, built from recycled waste such as car tyres and bottles.

India: ‘Burn After Eating’ – Husk Power Systems – using an innovative technology mix to run off-grid mini power stations fired by rice husks – a by-product that would otherwise be thrown away and release methane as it rotted. In the state of Bihar in India, an estimated 50,000 villagers are lighting up with bio-power.

Kenya: ‘Double-Boiled’ – Jompy Stove – a lightweight and inexpensive stove-top device that sits between a cooking pot and an open flame to rapidly boil water. This incredibly simple technology could save millions who die from drinking contaminated water. Households can cook a meal and sterilise dirty water at the same time – both lives and fuel can be saved.

Madagascar: ‘One Reef at a Time’ – Blue Ventures – offering researchers and volunteers the chance to work with local communities to protect the reefs using sustainable marine conservation areas. Blue Ventures’ project in Madagascar – home to both the world’s fourth largest coral reef and a rejuvenated octopus fishing industry – is working with local communities to make sustainable livelihoods a reality.

Malawi: ‘In a Nutshell’ – The Full Belly Project – helping to improve life in developing countries, an Africa-wide project to promote easy-to-make and easy-to-maintain technologies to improve agricultural-output sustainability.

Mexico: ‘Saving from a Rainy Day’ – Isla Urbana – developing a simple collection and filtering system which harvests rainwater, mainly using materials from local hardware stores and installed by specially trained local plumbers.

Peru: ‘Pass it On’ – Sierra Productiva – passing on the knowledge to improve organic techniques to dramatically boost production from both livestock and crops. The main technology has been harnessing springs and the use of drip irrigation systems, freeing the farmers from dependence on rainfall that gave them only one harvest a year.

Philippines: ‘The Only Way is Up’ – Running Water Uphill – using the power of a river’s flow to literally push water uphill without any other energy input, it’s proving to be a benefit for poor villagers living in mountainous regions. The ram pump can save both hours of back-breaking work carrying water and cash where expensive water pumps are replaced.

Philippines: ‘Growth Cycle’ – Bamboosero – training and supporting bike building in developing countries, using local, sustainable bamboo. The bikes sell locally, but entrepreneurs particularly love the idea of exporting their products to Europe and the USA, where there is a market for the unique and increasingly high-quality frames.

Rwanda: ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ – e.quinox – offering a solution to rural villages left in the dark, the little shop of light has set up its first solar energy kiosk in Gakenke district in Rwanda. Sealed ‘battery boxes’ are on constant charge rotation, when the lights go dim villagers can come and swap their box for a fresh one.

Tanzania: ‘Ok Coral’ – Chumbe Island Coral Park – involving local fishermen and providing sustainable employment opportunities based on a protection model that pays its way. The evidence is a string of pristine coral islands that provide refuge for 400 fish species and a string of solar powered eco-lodges that do the same for tourists.
