Several individuals have been recognised by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) for bringing Singapore’s standard of sustainable design to greener heights. They were awarded the Green Building Individual Award at the annual BCA Awards on May 16.

In 2013, a new award — the Young Green Building Individual Award — recognises young individuals under the age of 40 who have made outstanding personal contributions in the field.

A “green” hospital

One example of sustainable design can be seen in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. With space at a premium, plants are stacked vertically — from planter boxes hanging outside wards, to a central courtyard growing in the basement, and a community garden on the roof.

The hospital’s design also takes advantage of the neighbouring Yishun Pond and other water features to make for a healing environment. The courtyard also acts as the hospital’s heart — as it is designed to be the point of reference for visitors and patients to orientate themselves around the hospital ground.

Experts said finding underground reservoirs of water could solve Singapore’s problem of not having enough space to hold rainwater, and it could also prove to be the country’s fifth tap.

The comment follows a recent tender called by national water agency PUB to study the feasibility of extracting groundwater from the southern and western parts of Singapore.

If the three-year study shows promise, Singapore could join a host of countries that source drinking water from the ground.

Groundwater could then add to Singapore’s water supply that now depends on four sources — imported water, catchment water, treated recycled water and desalinated water.

The four sources are referred to as the “four national taps”. These sources provide for the nation’s current water demand of some 400 million gallons of water each day. PUB said this number is projected to almost double by 2060.

Currently, the area under scrutiny is a 200-million-year-old land space called the Jurong Formation.

Close to 60 Singapore companies have taken part in the development of Tianjin Eco-City in north China, and invested S$1.06 billion to date in the past four and a half years.

This is according to the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development Company, master developer of the Tianjin Eco-City project.

Singapore companies planning to venture into the eco-city over the next few years will have more funding aid to look forward to.

The Tianjin Eco-City is a bilateral project between China and Singapore, with private sector investment and development. It is a 50/50 joint venture between a Chinese consortium led by the Tianjin TEDA investment holding company and a Singapore consortium led by Keppel Group.

There are now 900 registered companies and more than 3,000 residents at Tianjin Eco-City.

Companies in the eco-city need not necessarily be “green”.

18 May 2013 – More than 86,000 books were given a new lease of life at this year’s Book Exchange, held at the National Library Building today.

Organised by the National Library Board (NLB) for the fifth year, this is an annual platform for people to recycle and share their treasured reads with other avid readers to get people to read more widely. Over the past three weeks, members of the public had brought their books to the NLB’s public libraries. For each recycled book, the public received a coupon which could be used during the event to exchange for another book. The Book Exchange has been sponsored by Keppel Land Limited (Keppel Land) since 2011, with increasing book donations from its staff, tenants and residents, from 1,500 used books in 2011 to 3,000 last year and 4,000 this year.

The Book Exchange was flagged off by Mrs Elaine Ng, Chief Executive Officer of the NLB, Mr Ang Wee Gee, Chief Executive Officer of Keppel Land Limited, and Mr Neil Humphreys, the event’s Reading Ambassador.

Said Mrs Elaine Ng, Chief Executive Officer of the NLB, “The Book Exchange has become a signature book recycling event which the public looks forward to annually. Since 2009, over 385,000 books have changed hands. This is a platform that brings people from all walks of life together year after year, and instils a spirit of sharing in the community. We also hope that this event will fuel the joy of reading as people have the opportunity to read more widely through the exchange of books.”

Mr Ang Wee Gee, Chief Executive Officer of Keppel Land, said, “As a company that is committed towards sustainability, Keppel Land strives to cultivate a green mindset among our staff and local communities. With our sharpened focus on environmental sustainability, this year, we have rallied residents of our waterfront properties, as well as our office tenants at our commercial buildings, to join in our efforts. On a staff involvement front, we are pleased that we have about 30 staff volunteers who have stepped forward to render their support during this year’s initiative.”

By Wong Wei Han, TODAY, 20 May 2013.

Seventeen food court and fast food operators, with over 500 outlets between them, have partnered the National Environment Agency (NEA) for the first time in a large-scale effort to encourage Singaporeans to return their trays in eateries here.

Within the next two years, the scheme will be introduced at many popular food and beverage businesses here, such as food court operators Kopitiam, NTUC Foodfare and Koufu, as well as fast food operators McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Subway. A ‘Tray Return Partner’ decal will be placed at their storefront, which serves as a way for the public to identify tray return ready outlets.

Second Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Grace Fu, who officiated at yesterday’s launch, said the tray return practice has to be established as a social norm because the simple act of leaving the table clean for the next customer helps make Singapore a more pleasant society.

“Returning our trays after eating… also supports public cleanliness,” Ms Fu added. “We want to encourage Singaporeans to have clean habits, for ourselves and our families, and not to be entirely reliant on cleaners. We want to be a clean city, not a cleaned city.”

This article is contributed by Peter Halliday, Head of Siemens Building Technologies Division for ASEAN.

In March this year, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) launched the BCA-IDA Green Mark for New Data Centers. This would be targeted at data centers that fulfil the established green standards, and it comes ahead of the opening of a data center park in Singapore in 2016.

As Singapore grows to be a data center hub, both the IT industry and building authorities are emphasizing the importance of energy efficient data centers. With servers running 24X7 under tightly controlled environmental conditions and often not at full capacity, data centers are among the world’s largest consumers of energy. IDA estimates that energy consumption accounts for more than 50% of the operating expenditure in a typical data center in Singapore.

In order for today’s data centers to be sustainable, both economically and environmentally, disjointed energy measures are insufficient. There needs to be an integrated approach to data center infrastructure in order for genuine energy optimization to be realized.

Peter Halliday, Head of Siemens Building Technologies Division for ASEAN, discusses the challenges of operating energy efficient data centers and how operators can increase energy efficiency by adopting green practices at the infrastructure level.

Environmental footprint of data centers

Energy consuming operations

Data centers consume more energy than any other building in the world as they operate without downtime in tightly controlled environments. Due to their energy-demanding operations, they are major carbon emitters. Environmental groups estimate that data centers contribute around two percent of the world’s total carbon emissions and are expected to overtake the airline industry in the amount of carbon emitted by 2020.

Disjointed energy measures

Due to the heat-and-moisture sensitivity of IT equipment, data centers require strictly controlled humidity and temperature levels. Disjointed energy measures, such as trying to optimize ventilation systems in order to affect the facility’s cooling needs, are often used to reduce the operating energy demand. These measures are stop-gap solutions as they do not affect or increase a data center’s energy efficiency, instead they merely mitigate the effects of a poorly designed data center.

Mapping out a green data center

With a Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) system, data centers are able to map out an outline for environmentally sustainable and high performing operations. This in turn will enable them to maximize their full potential, in terms of energy consumption, life cycle, asset management and operational efficiency, which leads to smaller real estate requirements and decreased operating costs.

The outline typically consists of the following elements.

Maximizing cooling efficiency

With sophisticated airflow management, hot- or cold-aisle containment, efficient cooling and patented heat recovery systems, data center operators are able to adjust the environmental conditions in the data centers according to actual cooling demands. This optimizes the facility’s cooling efficiency, which in turn leads to a lower amount of energy consumed during day-to-day operations.

Limiting energy loss from installed equipment

With a monitoring system that allows data center operators to observe the exact amount of energy consumed in the facility, as well as the data center’s energy consumption trends, energy loss on installed equipment is quickly identified for prompt rectification. This minimizes any unintentional loss of energy.

Decreasing operating energy requirements

New technology and design features in data centers allow for higher internal temperature and humidity set points that do not affect the performance of IT equipment. This greatly reduces the demand load for cooling and cuts down operating energy demand.

Increasing power usage effectiveness

With power monitoring devices and communication-capable circuit breakers, that reliably and precisely monitor power at strategic points, operators are able to monitor power consumption patterns in real-time. Communication-capable circuit breakers increase the transparency in power distribution by transmitting current status, alarm signals and threshold warnings. Power usage strategies can then be adjusted and corrective actions taken to ensure optimal power usage.

Green steps in Singapore

As Singapore grows to be a data center hub for the region, the need for energy efficient data centers will be critical as energy resources are limited. Data centers that are energy efficient at the infrastructure level will result in optimized performance, without compromising on environmental sustainability, which will lead to lower operating costs.

Buildings gobble up 31 per cent of Singapore’s electricity, according to the Building and Construction Authority.

To free up the energy grid, a pilot project targeted at commercial buildings has been launched to reward companies for cutting energy consumption during peak periods.

The Siemens Centre at Macpherson Road is the first commercial building in Singapore to launch the demand response service.

It allows businesses to reduce their power usage when asked to during peak periods when a lot of companies are feeding off the energy grid.

In return, the firms receive payments for their flexibility.

This pilot project is being tested in a partnership with Diamond Energy, a wholesale trader in the National Electricity Market of Singapore.
