MEMBERS PRESENT: Terry Koehn, Jim Beeghly, Mike Mango, Jim Curran, Andy Carpenter, Patrick McCormick, Tom Cassavant, Ryan Story, and Mark Eads

GUEST: Chad Pfohl (guest of Tom Cassavant)

The Minutes of the May 1, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Karo. Bob Dunn moved with second by Brett Lenz that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said our bills for last month and before are paid; we only owe bills that have come in this month. The rebuilt cylinder for the Citabria cost about $900. Had we not paid that, we’d pretty much be doing okay; however now, we’re a little short. Anybody who’d like to pay their bill is welcome to do so; it would sure help.

2. Airplanes: Don talked to Tony re the ASI and gas odor. Tony will contact the manufacturer and see if they can send a new one to switch for the old one. Re the gas smell, the odor is only in the cockpit, not under the cowling. Discussion was held re what the problem might be. Don said Tony will check on the gas smell and, if located, will fix it. If Tony can’t find it and/or fix it, we’ll find someone who can. We also got a report that black oil seems to be on the back of the tach cable. Tony will check that out also.

157 has a problem with the push-to-talk on the pilot’s side.

3. Clean-Up Day: Don said 7 or 8 guys came out, really worked hard, and got a lot of work done, e.g., got new rope for the flag pole and they put it and the flag back up on the tower; cleaned out the drain in the center of the island so the water drains better; cut down trees on the north end of runway 33, cleaned out the office hangar and hauled a bunch of junk out, made arrangements to put an overhead door on the open hangar where the tractors are kept; and they had lunch. Discussion was held re needing someone to haul a bunch of scrap metal away. Rick moved with second by Karo that Terry bring his trailer out and cart it away. More discussion was held. Tabled.

4. Ground school update: Mark Eads said it’s going well. There are two more classes, then the students will take the practice tests so they can see how they’re doing. Discussion was held re Ryan Story, our newest CFI, teaching the next session of ground school classes. Mark said he’ll supply him with his notes and lesson plans so Ryan can take over when the next session is scheduled.

5. Flour Drop and Spot Landing Contest: Tim confirmed he’ll provide the meat and trophies; we’ll make final details and arrangements at next week’s meeting.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Annual Preschool Visit: Chief flight instructor Terry Koehn gave his annual tour to 25-30 preschool youngsters from North Liberty. A good time was had by all . . . sounds like, from how Terry described it, he had a great time.

Bob moved with second by Brett to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:07 PM.

OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Don Nelson, Bob Dunn, Rick Treiber, Brett Lenz, and Randy Stannard

MEMBERS PRESENT: Terry Koehn, Mark Elbert, Dave White, Kent Johnson, Jim Beeghly, Mike Mango, Steve Smith, Jim Curran, Ben and Marcy Wenberg, and Mark Eads

GUEST: Walter Hewett (an original member, back to visit from Palm Bay, FL.) Welcome back, Walt.

The Minutes of the April 24, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Mark Eads. Bob Dunn moved with second by Brett Lenz that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said it’s okay; the money is all spent, bills are pretty well paid, but we are broke.

2. One new member has signed up: Anna Sorey. Welcome, Anna!

3. Airplanes: The Citabria has a cracked cylinder and it is believed we can find a cheaper than new one to replace it. If not, it will be expensive to fix.

Regarding the Ercoupe, Steve Smith brought up a question regarding the airspeed indicator. It was replaced not too long ago due to an AD, but the indicated speed is incorrect. A comment was made that when the plane is in the hangar, the speed shows 20 to 22 MPH! Don said he’d contact Duke’s to see how a repair or replacement can be done. Ben Wenberg asked about the progress towards getting the radio/intercom problems resolved. Don said that different people have reported to him different stories, but it was a fact that in order to use any sort of intercom, the portable battery operated system had to be used. Ben asked the Board members if we couldn’t stop spending any more time, and just get it fixed! Mike Mango stated he’d contact a fellow he’d been trying to get out to look at it. [Note: Since the meeting, this fellow has checked the system, and found a blown fuse, and replaced it. The intercom seems normal now, but no-one knows why the fuse blew in the first place. Time will tell on that.]

Ben also asked the Board members if we could fix the problem with the strong gas smell in the cockpit on the Ercoupe. It’s not getting any better; in fact, it’s getting worse all the time. Steve Smith said when he last flew the Ercoupe, he was actually wondering if the gas leak might result in a fire! Ben commented that a couple days before, he and Marcy flew the Ercoupe for just over an hour, and their clothing stunk so badly they had to go home and wash the clothes and take showers! Don suggested that maybe he should have Mike remove the cowling and inspect the entire fuel system to look for a leak somewhere.

4. Work day planned for Saturday: It was determined weather is likely to be prohibitive for productivity, so it was decided to delay it until Sunday the 5th. Much discussion focused on what is needed to be done. Terry has a lengthy list so no one need worry about jobs to be done. Mike Mango volunteered to provide food for the work day on Sunday. Thanks, Mike!

5. Ground school update: Both Marks report things are going pretty well.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Tim Scheer brought up putting up new hangers. Discussion ensued. Don says he is in favor of anything we wish to do. Several ideas were discussed. Rick suggested we solicit people who might want to hangar their aircraft here, and one way to help finance the project may be for them to possibly pay hangar rent in advance.

2. Rick Treiber reported that in the pursuit of possibly doing another concert, he had contacted Radislov Lorkovic, who was a very popular performer in an earlier concert, and got an immediate response that he would love to do it if his schedule allowed. He is traveling internationally on a regular basis, so we need to find a date. Perhaps in late August. Also, Josh Russell (a past member and CFI who has his doctorate in piano performance and who has performed in past concerts as well) has agreed to perform again if his schedule allows. Rick is working on possible details.

Bob moved with second by Brett to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:12 PM.

DON NELSON

By Jim Curran

Patriarch of Green Castle FBO from July 1975 to 1990. Started Green Castle Aero club in 1993. Started flying in 1960. Comm (ASMEL), Inst, CFI-ASEL/Instru; 20,000 hrs total; 10,000 dual given (since 1966) including aerobatics. He has sent hundreds of students for licenses and ratings and done hundreds of flight reviews.

Don says Green Castle is a labor of love and a dream hobby after flying 18 yrs (1964-82) with IA highway patrol. Some of his memories include teaching a student who later became an Air Force 2 pilot as well as making 4 forced landings, always back on a hard surface with no a/c damage. Don frequently says that Green Castle is still an active airport due to all the effort by the club members. And we all thank Don for the enormous effort he has put into the club. Without Don, we would not have this club and a lot of us wouldn’t be the pilots that we are.

OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Don Nelson, Bob Dunn, Brett Lenz, and Karo Stigler

MEMBERS PRESENT: Em Norden, Terry Koehn, Dave White, Dewey Walker, Kent Johnson, Mark Elbert, Jim Beeghly, and Mark Eads

The Minutes of the April 10, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Mark Eads. (Because of heavy rains, no meeting was held April 17.) Bob Dunn moved with second by Brett Lenz that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said the “treasury is looking pretty good” as almost all our bills are paid; all-in-all, we’re in pretty good shape. The weather’s been lousy for flying, but we’re holding up. Don’s going to ask Dan Moen to run us a little report that covers the first four months of the year to see if we’re doing as well as he thinks we are.

2. Aircraft: Don reported the 180 hasn’t flown since the new starter was installed, but when it was tested, it started right up. The shimmy’s been fixed on both 19Q and the Ercoupe. The electrical’s been fixed on 157. The Citabria’s still at Duke’s for annual, and when it returns, 478 will go down. The radios seem to be clear on the Ercoupe; however, the intercom still doesn’t work. It will just have to go to Waterloo to have it checked out.

3. Ground School: Mark Eads said the class this week went pretty well. Tim Scheer thinks there’s a “vast improvement” over the last session we had. The students are quite engaged.

4. Tim got in touch with CR’s EAA chapter and invited them to our flour drop/spot landing contest that’s scheduled for Saturday, May 18. As mentioned before, the spot landing contest will be at 11:00, pot luck lunch (Green Castle will supply the meat) will be at noon, and the flour drop contest will be at 1:00.

5. Regarding our spring clean-up day (May 4), Terry said his list of work needing to be done is about two pages long now. We want to remind those who come out to help to bring brooms, shovels, chain saws, hammers, nails, and band aids.

6. We want to remind everyone that the front “page” of our website on the right side lists scheduled events. If someone can’t remember what’s happening or when, just check the website that Jim Beeghly keeps current.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Jim Curran is starting a “get-to-know-other-members” “blurb” for the weekly minutes. Jim will send an email to members (who have an email address listed on our website) asking them to respond with a little information about themselves (e.g., name, where they live, where they work or what type of them they do (or, if retired, where they worked or what type of work they did before retiring), what pilot ratings they have, interests other than flying, etc.), and will share it at the meetings which will then be an item in the week’s minutes. Good idea, Jim. Thanks.

2. Thanks, Mark Elbert, for getting the runway sign repainted. Looks great!

3. CFII Terry Koehn said the Super Sport (owned and built by Jim Beeghly, Rick Treiber, and Terry Koehn) made it up to 12,500 today and that the hours have been flown off. Yea!

4. Dewey Walker passed his written. Way to go, Dewey!

Bob moved with second by Brett to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:02 PM.

The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Randy Stannard at 6:31 PM.
OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Don Nelson, Bob Dunn, Brett Lenz, Calvin Colony, and Karo Stigler
MEMBERS PRESENT: Em Norden, Ben and Marcy Wenberg, Mark Elbert, new CFI Ryan Story, new private pilot Shelby Clair, Scott Clair, Mike Mango, Terry Koehn, Jim Beeghly, and Mark Eads
The Minutes of the April 3, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Calvin. Bob Dunn moved with second by Brett Lenz that the minutes be approved as corrected. Vote taken; Motion carried.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said the “treasury is getting healthier all the time”; practically all our bills are paid, including the unused fuel.
2. Aircraft: Don said the front strut on the 180 has been fixed and the starter will be installed tomorrow; 157 has been repaired and is ready to go; the fella who was going to check out the radios in the Ercoupe hasn’t had a chance to look at it yet but should some time this week. If not, we’ll take it to Waterloo. Don said we have a “major problem trying to keep our planes clean, especially during the winter.” For the last several years, Mike Burns has come down many times at 3:00 in the morning to wash our planes; however, since he’s working so much overtime at his paying job, he just doesn’t have time to do it right now. Don would like several members to come down so Mike can show them the best way to clean the oil off the bellies, etc. We’ll send an email out to all members as soon as Don gets a good date and time from Mike. Mike Mango, Mark Eads, and a couple of other members in attendance tonight spoke right up and said they’ll volunteer. 19Q’s shimmy will be fixed as soon as we get the part.
3. Ground School: When asked how ground school was going, Mark Eads jokingly said, “It’s not that interesting; it’s ground school.” Tim Scheer, Mark Elbert, Ryan Story, and Gary Lust were in attendance and assisted in the night’s proceedings. Mark said scholarship applicant Mitchell did well on the quiz.
4. Well, the weather finally allowed scholarship recipient Shelby Clair to go for her checkride, and SHE PASSED! CONGRATULATIONS, new private pilot SHELBY CLAIR!
5. Ryan Story got his CFI! We understand FSDO commented that Ryan made it easier being so well prepared and complimented CFII Terry Koehn on his preparation. CONGRATULATIONS, Ryan! Don moved with second by Bob that we add Ryan to the roster of CFIs. Vote taken; Motion carried. Terry will add him to the scheduler as an authorized Green Castle instructor.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Robert Broulik of Lisbon is a new member. Robert has been attending our ground school this session and is a student pilot. We understand Robert’s a very enthusiastic student. Welcome, Robert!
2. Terry Koehn said the grass runway has been rolled twice and we’ll roll it again when it dries out a little. Anyone who wants to go down and clear some trees at the end of 33, go right ahead.
3. Ben Wenberg said a lot of credit goes to Dean Teslik who’s done a lot of work on our mower. Thanks, Dean! Ben said he, Don, Dean, and Al Schmidt have all worked on the mower to get it going for the season. After three days of labor, Mike Mango offered a diesel-powered mower that provides a 72-inch cut like the one we already have. Thanks, Mike! Mike said it’s at Dean’s shop as it needs a little work.
4. On a sad note, we have been informed that Rick Treiber’s mom, Adeline, passed away April 7. Our condolences are extended to Rick and his family.
5. On the whiteboard in the meeting room were Calvin’s words of wisdom for ground school attendees: “Pitch is airspeed; power is altitude; anything you look at on the dash is only a CRUTCH!”
Bob moved with second by Brett to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:05 PM.

OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Don Nelson, Bob Dunn, Rick Treiber, Brett Lenz, Calvin Colony, Randy Stannard, and Karo Stigler

MEMBERS PRESENT: Em Norden, Gary & Sharon Lust, Mike “Dewey” Walker, Ryan Story, Mitchell Nemec, Doug Nemec, Jim Beeghly, Terry Koehn, Shelby Clair, Patrick McCormick, Mark Elbert, Dave White, Jim Curran, and Mark Eads

GUEST: Rosemary Cantrell (Don’s daughter)

The Minutes of the March 27, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Karo. Bob Dunn moved with second by Randy Stannard that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said there’s still no basic change; we’re holding our own.

2. Aircraft: Don said there are “a few minor little problems with a few of the planes.” Mike Mango knows of a fella who will look at the Ercoupe’s radios; if he can’t fix them, we’ll take it to Waterloo. The Citabria’s at Duke’s for annual; 157′s back, but there’s a problem with the electrical system (over voltage switch). The switch is here; all we have to do is install it.

3. Craig Yarker joined our club on March 30. Welcome, Craig.

4. Ground School: Mark Eads said three new people walked in Monday night to start ground school. Ryan Story lead the class. Mark said he thinks a class of eight is just about the max. Terry Koehn, Mark Elbert, Chris Lenz, Mike Mango, and Pres. Tim Scheer all appeared and observed and assisted.

5. The current scholarship recipient, Shelby Clair, was scheduled, once again, for her check ride but, once again, was weathered out. She’s scheduled (again) for her private rating check ride this Friday, as is Al Schmidt; also, Ryan Story is scheduled to get his CFI rating.

6. Tim talked to Dennis Hodge of the CR EAA chapter. They’re interested in having a BOD meeting here to check out our facilities. They’d like to participate in our flour drop and said the date is up to us. Discussion re date, time, whether to have a spot landing contest in addition to the flour drop, food, etc. Rick moved with second by Don that we plan to have the spot landing contest at 11:00, food at noon, and the flour drop at 1:00 on May 18. Vote taken; Motion carried. Rick will contact his radio program person and see if he can grab some air time to promote the event. Tim will, once again, provide the small cheap trophies.

7. Discussion was held re scheduling our spring clean-up. Rick moved with second by Randy that we set it for May 4, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. Vote taken; Motion carried. We’ll try and do as many things on the list discussed last we as we can as well as trim a few trees at the end of 33.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Discussion was held re having a concert like we used to have as a fund raiser for our scholarship program. Rick will check with Josh (piano) and see when he can come back; Rosemary said she knows Lisa’s willing to come up and sing; Rick will check with Rad (piano) and Kerry (cello) to see what’s good for them.

2. Gary and Sharon Lust are having a blue grass party again this year. Date: August 10; time: band starts at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Don moved with second by Bob to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:00 PM.

OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Don Nelson, Bob Dunn, Rick Treiber, Brett Lenz, Calvin Colony, and Karo Stigler

MEMBERS PRESENT: Em Norden, Mike Mango, Jim McCullough, Patrick McCormick, Ben & Mrs. Wenberg, Al Schmidt, Mark Elbert, Dave White, Jim Curran, Chris Lenz, and Mark Eads

GUEST: Matt Shook (guest of Dave White) is the new disaster management director in Muscatine County and is interested in possibly taking lessons.

The Minutes of the March 20, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Karo. Bob Dunn moved with second by Rick Treiber that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said there’s really nothing to report. Same as always. We have gas in the tank that’s been paid for, and we also have a lot of gas in the tank that hasn’t been paid for.

2. Aircraft: Don said 157 will probably be back this week then the Citabria will go down to Duke’s.

3. Ground School: Mark Eads said this class has a “nice pace to it.” Mitchell (our only scholarship applicant) is doing well. Chief CFII Terry Koehn addressed the class and contributed a lot. Mark Elbert and Tim Scheer both attended and, as usual, added quite a bit to the evening’s lesson.

4. The current scholarship recipient, Shelby Clair, was scheduled, once again, for her check ride but, once again, was weathered out.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. No new members this week.

2. Discussion was held re when we can get dirt to build up the island and when we can start with Terry’s list. We decided we can’t get dirt until the ground thaws. Tim Scheer hasn’t heard from the CR EAA chapter to see when they want to come down, but he’ll give them a call. Then, we’ll back it up a couple of weeks and schedule our work/clean-up date.

3. Mike Mango asked if the 5% discount if we put $1,000 on our account was still in effect. Answer: Yes, it’s still in effect.

4. Mark Elbert said we had a good showing at the AOPA meeting at the Clarion Hotel last night; about 12 members attended. Charts and symbology, minimum and maximum altitude, procedures for VOR at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a couple of accident recaps, etc. are some of the subjects discussed. Discussion was held re the use of iPads during flight and the importance of having a back-up device or paper chart in case the iPad gives out.

Bob moved with second by Rick to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:50 PM.

The Minutes of the March 13, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Karo. Bob Dunn moved with second by Rick Treiber that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said the treasury is doing pretty well; we got a load of avgas and have the money to pay for it.

2. Aircraft: The Ercoupe’s back and is ready to fly; 157 is at Duke’s; couple of DGs are out and have been sent away for rebuilding; seats in 157 will be reworked and possibly recovered.

3. Ground School: We have three students and two observers in this session of ground school, and Terry said we may have a couple of more students soon.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. No new members this week.

2. Terry’s been keeping a list of things that need to be done out here: repair doors by the tractors, add dirt and seed to island; asphalt clean-up around edges of runway; repair taxiway (edges need coldpatched); repair shop hangar doors (both sides); auto sump pump for well pit (need to redirect the water run-off from gutters away from the office building); paint runway marker sign; repaint “GREEN CASTLE” on roof; repair “GREEN CASTLE’ sign on hangar; build roof over gas pumps. Discussion was held re starting in April with the adding dirt and seeding.

3. Tim suggested we give Mark Eads some flight time to reimburse him for buying materials and to thank him for teaching ground school. Rick moved with second by Don that we credit Mark’s account with one hour of flight time per class taught. Vote taken; Motion carried.

Bob moved with second by Rick to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:08 PM.

OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT:

Don Nelson, Bob Dunn, Rick Treiber, Brett Lenz, Randy Stannard, and Karo Stigler

MEMBERS PRESENT:

Em Norden, Mark Elbert, Jim Beeghly, Terry Koehn, Chris Lenz, Ben Lunstrum, Ryan Story, and Mark Eads

The Minutes of the March 6, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Karo. Bob Dunn moved with second by Brett Lenz and Rick Treiber that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said “same as always; we can use more money, but we’re doing okay.”

2. Aircraft: The Ercoupe’s still at Duke’s waiting for the carburetor to be rebuilt. Don said the outfit that’s rebuilding the carb is two weeks behind. We understand that Terry Koehn’s “really broken up” that the DG quit working on 19Q. We’ll get it fixed, Terry.

3. Scholarship: We now have two applicants for the scholarship (Mitchell Nemec and Matthew Reiland). Discussion was held, and it was decided, that we’ll extend the scholarship application deadline to and including March 18, 2013 (first class of ground school this session). Our chief CFII, Terry Koehn, agreed to address the ground school participants some time during this session.

4. The current scholarship recipient, Shelby Clair, is scheduled for her checkride tomorrow, March 14. She’s been scheduled a couple of times before, but both times had to cancel due to poor weather.

5. Pres. Tim Scheer talked to three different people in the CR EAA chapter, and they’re very interested in getting together. Tim suggested we have a fly-in where everybody can bring a dish and Green Castle will supply the meat. Tim will talk to them re a good date.

6. It’s nice to see our 2008 scholarship recipient (Ben Lunstrum) in attendance tonight. Ben’s a student at the University of North Dakota and will receive his CFI rating this spring.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Two new members and student pilots: Warren Schmidt and Michael Alibasic. WELCOME!

2. THANK YOU, EM, FOR THE NEW TABLECLOTHS!

3. Some things that we’ll do this spring: some hangar doors need repair; general clean-up of grounds; ruts caused by driving on squishy ground (Don) need to be smoothed and reseeded; center area where we park aircraft needs some fill dirt.

Bob moved with second by Rick to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:52 PM.

OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT:

Don Nelson, Rick Treiber, Calvin Colony, Randy Stannard, and Karo Stigler

MEMBERS PRESENT:

Mark Elbert, Jim Curran, Jim Beeghly, Terry Koehn, Gary & Sharon Lust, Mitchell Nemec (and dad, Doug), Mike Mango, Cory Hodapp, and Mark Eads

The Minutes of the February 20, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Mark Elbert. [NOTE: Due to inclement weather, no meeting was held February 27.] Randy Stannard moved with second by Rick Treiber that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said “we’re the same as last week; we could always use more money. We’re actually keeping ahead.”

2. Aircraft: The Ercoupe’s still at Duke’s waiting for the carburetor to be rebuilt. Mike Burns is done all he can do on 157′s annual; we’ll swap it for the Ercoupe when the time comes. The runways are free and clear; ready to be used.

3. Scholarship: The members who made up the panel who participated in the radio program on February 28 at noon on KCJJ 1640 AM to promote our scholarship program, “did pretty good,” according to Don. We’re hoping people who listened and who know a young person who qualifies and has an interest in becoming a pilot will spread the word about our scholarship. Pres. Tim Scheer and Mark Eads went to an EAA meeting in Cedar Rapids and talked about our scholarship program. During the discussion, some of CR’s members had suggestions and asked several questions. Evidently, some of the members expressed an interest in getting together here at Green Castle for some sort of activity. Discussion was held re what type of activity would be a good “ice breaker” and when to hold it. Tim suggested we table this until he makes a few phone calls. We’re thinking about April.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. New Member and Student Pilot: Cory Hodapp. WELCOME, CORY!

2. Jim Curran reported that flight service is canvassing pilots by phone and is soliciting input from pilots re the service they (flight service) provide and what they can do to improve it. Jim encourages everyone to participate, as it could help all of us in GA.

Randy moved with second by Rick to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:51 PM.

The meeting was called to order by President Tim Scheer at 6:30 PM.

OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Don Nelson, Bob Dunn, Rick Treiber, Brett Lenz, and Karo Stigler

MEMBERS PRESENT: Em Norden, Mark Elbert, Jim Curran, Jim Beeghly, Jim McCullough, Rich Wilkening, Terry Koehn, and Mark Eads

The Minutes of the February 13, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Karo. Bob Dunn moved with second by Brett Lenz and Rick Treiber that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said “we’ve got some money, but we need a little more.”

2. Aircraft: The Ercoupe’s still at Duke’s (needs carburetor work).

3. No new members

4. Current scholarship student Shelby Clair is scheduled for her checkride Tuesday the 26th.

5. Scholarship: Pres. Scheer received word that a student at Marion High School will most likely be applying for the scholarship. Rick Treiber, CFII Terry Koehn, Mark Elbert, and Mark Eads make up the panel who will participate in the radio program on February 28 at noon on KCJJ 1640 AM to promote our scholarship program.

6. Terry said Sylvan Maher (recent new member from Chicago) received the three ratings he was going for.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Don said we should seriously consider selling 157 as we don’t really need it. The Arrow has a major coming up which could cost $17,000-$18,000. If we sold 157, the money we receive could be used to pay for the major on the Arrow. Discussion was held; tabled until the Arrow is majored so we can see the final cost, and then we’ll decide whether to sell 157 or keep it.

2. Bob Dunn mentioned he will not be at the next two meetings as he and Em are going to Arkansas on vacation. Have fun you two! [It was suggested that Karo send "unofficial pre-approved" minutes of tonight’s meeting to Dave White as a hint that, with our chef unavailable, we’ll be hungry.]

Bob moved with second by Brett to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:48 PM.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said everything is going pretty well. The Skyhawk’s up and running, we have all the parts to rebuild 478′s nose strut, the Ercoupe’s at Duke’s to get the shimmy fixed (should be done in a couple of days), and the engine heater on the Arrow is fixed.

2. No new members

3. Current scholarship student Shelby Clair is waiting for both the plane and Terry to free up, will take a couple of refresher hours with Terry, and then will go for her checkride.

4. Mark Eads said ground school will start March 18. Mark will send scholarship information and a bunch of applications to several schools and ask that they be provided to any student upon request. With Jim Beeghly’s help, Mark will send an email to Green Castle members regarding encouraging them to spread the word about our scholarship to family and friends.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Don mentioned that he has first-hand knowledge that the grounds at Green Castle are very, very soft and we all need to stay on the hard surface areas. [If you’ve seen the GIGANTIC ruts in front of the "meeting hangar," guess who made them!]

Bob moved with second by Randy to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:42 PM.

2. New member Jim Curran signed up today. Welcome, Jim. Tonight’s guest, Jason Meyer, is considering joining.

OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT:

Don Nelson, Bob Dunn, Randy Stannard, Calvin Colony, Rick Treiber and Brett Lenz.

MEMBERS PRESENT:

Em Norden, Jim Beeghly, Mike Mango, Patrick McCormick, Ben Wenberg, Marcy Wenberg, Dave White, Mike Walker, and Mark Eads.

The Minutes of the January 16 meeting were not available, so Don Nelson moved with Second by Randy Stannard that the minutes be read next week. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don said: “We’re struggling along but most bills are paid. Dues are coming in. We got about $1,000 in this week. Basically we’re OK.”

2. Airplanes: There have been a couple of problems. The nose gear on the Ercoupe had issues. The Skyhawk had some electrical problems, but Mike got that fixed. Still having some problems with starting it.

3. Ground school and scholarship: The next session of ground school will start March 18. Some discussion of past performance led to a series of stories. We were much amused. We need to try to get as many kids involved as we can, so it was discussed how we can get the word out. The deadline to receive applications is March 8, 2013 for this year. Each Scholarship applicant must go through the ground school unless it was already done somewhere else. Ground school will be free to high school students. As for publicity, Jim Beeghly will get posters sent to all for distribution. We need volunteers to get them to the schools. Rick will contact KCJJ to schedule some air time to discuss it on the air. Brett will forward details to the AeroHawks RC Club. Everyone needs to do what they can to help. Our past success getting multiple applicants was when we did the most publicity.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Don reported that Willie Nelson is involved with the American Legion and wants us to be aware that The Pizza Ranch in Sycamore Mall is running a benefit for The Sons of The American Legion. They will contribute 20% of the proceeds from any dinner check if a coupon is presented when paying for the meal on January 28, from 5 to 8PM. They would appreciate anyone helping out. It also applies to deliveries the same day. Call Don for copies of the coupon if you weren’t there to get one.

Bob Dunn moved with second by Brett Lenz to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:52 PM.

The Minutes of the January 9, 2013 Board of Directors meeting were read by Karo. Bob Dunn moved with second by Rick Treiber that the minutes be approved as read. Vote taken; Motion carried.

OLD AND NEW BUSINESS:

1. Treasurer’s Report: Don reported that we’re “getting healthier all the time. Several people have made payments.” Don said he paid off a lot of our bills, but we still have some to go.

2. Airplanes: Don said we don’t have any major problems with any of our planes except 478 is in our shop for reworking of the nose strut, the Skyhawk’s hard to start, and the nose strut on the Ercoupe is getting a shimmy (we may run it down to Duke’s). As far as he knows, Don reported “everything is hunky dory.”

3. Ground School: Mark said he has work to do yet on class plans before he starts the new session (which will probably be some time in March).

4. The Nemecs were going to come down and sign up, but the weather got real, real bad. Nemec said he will be down to sign up real soon as his son wants to take his first lesson right away.

5. Don said the door on a hangar was caught by the wind, and it needs to be fixed (when the weather gets a little better.” Other than that, everything else is pretty much okay.

6. New Scholarship Policies and Procedures. Treiber sent a copy of his suggestions to revise the scholarship policies and procedures to the BOD members. Everyone liked the suggestions, so they’ve been changed. Karo will send out an email to all Green Castle members saying we’re trying to recruit applicants for our scholarship students from “within” the club and will direct them to our website to check out the revisions. Jim Beeghly will post the 2013 application and policies on our website.

7. Shelby Clair (last scholarship recipient) passed her written and is ready to take her check ride. YEA!

Bob Dunn moved with second by Brett Lenz to adjourn the meeting. Vote taken; Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:41 PM.
