Thanks to all who came to the Mad City Bazaar this Sunday. Seeing so many giddy faces as they spotted their finds truly made me smile. That is what I love about treasure hunting myself. That thrill of the hunt.

So just as you all had that " I need that" thought it your head...just know I had the same thought when I found it.

I'll be sprinkling in items back in the Etsy shop and maybe a few new. I have to say. Doing yesterday's show definitely made we want to get back into the game...so thank you. Anything you had your eye on or something you need help searching for, email me...I love a good challenge.

The punch list

Ever have so many things you want to do, the list becomes so long it feels smothering? I hit that mark this Spring. So many great ideas but just no follow thru. A creative brick wall of sorts and if you are like me when you hit that wall you just stop. Natural I am sure, but I was ready to break that wall and more importantly let all those ideas come to fruition.

Lucky for me, a dear friend recently opened a shop in town and with all these projects waiting for homes...the timing could not have been more perfect. So I made my piles of things to donate, toss or create. The 'create' pile got pretty large, but excited to say I finished with a lot less stuff, a big sense of accomplishment & some pretty fun, upcycled goods.

So here is what I have doing the last few weeks. Starting with a huge assortment of old frames and lots of interesting things to fill them with. Puzzles, mirrors, maps, old music sheets...and some were just so cool...just adding color was enough.

I found these old Hamm's placemats and lacquered it into an old tray. "from the land of sky blue water.."

And finally, the Ingrid chair. A perfectly paired linen seat with a glossy royal blue .

You can find all of these..along with many other unique things at the Regal Find. Located in charming downtown Middleton, right around the corner from Bloom bake shop. It is lovely space that is worth exploring and the neatest shop owner.

Ahhhh, feels good to cross so many things off my list. Having little more creative breathing room doesn't hurt either.

Wood 3 Ways

Well, I am finally finished with my salvage art piece for the Habitat for Humanity Restore Show. To catch you up to speed.... each year this fantastic organization gives local artists $15 to spend at their stores and asks them to create recycled works of art with 100% of the sales going back to Habitat.

If you have never checked out a ReStore, you must. Always something to inspire and so many functional and vintage items that you are saving from a landfill.

This is what I picked up first. A stack of pressed wood floor tiles.

After further inspection I discovered they were individual tiles 'grouted' with a rubber caulk, so I separated them and started placing them into new shapes.

My first thought was paint, but then I saw my large stack of National Geographic magazines.

Flipping thru the pages, the plethora of breathtaking nature shots gave me an idea. Creating a landscape of terrains, elements and colors with the individual tiles.

Although I have loads of old scrap wood and cabinet doors, they just did not look right. So back to the ReStore and then I found it...right behind the shop. Pallet board. My location has a free pile in the back of the store for damaged ones. Although no longer suitable for their intended purpose, they are great salvaged boards to work with.

Taking apart the boards apart was a tad more challenging then I thought, but with some help from my handy Nate & some power tools, I was able to find 3 good pieces that had lots of character. Patina'd wood and rusty nails.

Using twine guidelines the assembly could begin.

Construction adhesive provided a sturdy, clean and quick drying glue.

The layout itself took some time. Deciding the order, spacing and color flow. I like to marinate on things like this. Put them together, stare at it for a bit, shift a few tiles and then revisiting a day or two later. I liked the idea of recreating layers of the earth in an upward flow and settled on a design.

Starting with rocks, shale & lava

moving into wetlands, moss and the seas

and topping off with glaciers, clouds and stars.

The result...an evolving look at our world's climate and landscape. The title...well, I am a big fan of Top Chef and cooking competitions in general. All the rage is preparing a single ingredient in various methods, so instead of Salmon: 3 Ways, I give you "Wood 3 Ways".
1)The pressed wood tiles
2) the raw pallet wood
3) & magazine paper, which is made of course from wood pulp.

2 scrap pieces of wood on the back holds the 3 planks together, and also gave me a great spot to attach the hanger.

There are 3 Madison locations where the works will be displayed. "Wood 3 Ways" will be at Hatch Art House with an opening reception on Friday May 3rd.

Such a fun contrast of old and new and ironically reminds me of a board I created on Pinterest "Nature's Inspiration" . I must have been thinking of this idea all along.

Coast to Coast

It has been far, far too long since I shared a 'before & after' project so I will get right to it. Enter the 'before', a very dated tiled plant stand.

and the 'after', my tribute to the coasts of Wisconsin, covered in a blue that rivals Lake Superior.

Martha Stewart's Moroccan Teal provided the hue. It is turquoise, but softer. The knicked wood, instantly added some charm once coated in the paint and scuffed a bit.

To mask the country kitchen tile, a recycled state map.

From Bayfield,

to Green Bay, those frumpy flowers were instantly gone.

It turned out to be such a charming little piece, & with a thick layer of poly on the top...functional. Although, it would be a shame to cover up these great images.

It is headed over to Hatch Art House this weekend to find a new home with a fellow lover of the shores.

Off to the fair

This weekend was the opening of the Elkorn Flea Market and I although my stock pile is still quite full, I could not resist the creative inspiration. So instead of the truck load full of finds, it was nice to peruse the vendors and pick up only the things that made my heart smile.

First up, this metal Ferris wheel toy. My eyes lit up when I saw it on a back table. I love old carnival themed things. A bit dusty & rusty, but with darling illustrations and colors. This one needs a lot of TLC, but it was a 1/3 of what I thought it would be priced at, and if I can restore it a bit, it will be a real winner.

Although Mr. Duck has lost his wheels and is a little weak in the neck, their sweet faces and rich colored wood parts were worth saving. A few adjustment and this vintage Fisher Price pull toy will be the cutest decor piece for a nursery or play room.

And...holy jack pot. I have not seen a collection of old National Geographic maps like this since the first time I discovered them. I took home 15 and I barely made a dent in the basketful. Tammy at Hatch Art House will be very excited. I have been promising her more map chairs for months now.

Hope your weekend was just a treasure filled in what ever way you spent it.

Don Draper & the Tartan bag

About 10 minutes into watching this Sunday's Mad Men Episode 7, my heart skipped a beat. When Megan (Don's wife) invites her parents to visit for the weekend, Don Draper (Jon Hamm) walks into the apartment carrying this fabulous, plaid garment bag. Are you serious? Is that my bag? Sure, I had envisioned this scene in my head when I sold it to a stylist for the AMC blockbuster, but to see it actually in a scene. Silly, I know, but fun to think they thought it was as perfect as I did when I found it.

I must have rewound it 6 times...my husband is so patient. Although no way to be 100%, it sure does look like it, right?

The bag was in mint condition, bright red with a yellow stripe running thru it.

Regardless, in my mind, it is it, and I am leaving it at that.

I mean, Don Draper as your product model....does it get any better?

This Saturday, myself and I a handful of other local artists will be part of Absolutely Art's, 'pop-up' gallery at the ISTHMUS Green Day fair. What a perfect time to debut the Spring line of the slide carousel mirrors. Also available in my Etsy shop

You know, I rarely like doing the same thing twice, but the first round of these got such a good response, I thought why not. But to make it a little different, a fun array of colors.

Proof is in the pouf

Its true I finally have an answer to the mystery of the thrift store footstool. You remember, the mod rattan number I picked up for $7 at a Minnesota thrift store.

After hearing numerous speculations, I decided to go to a reliable source and get it appraised. So, I contacted one of my favorite magazines, Country Living to get the real story. They have a this great column called "What's it worth?" where readers send in questions about the origins & history of their treasures.

So.....just guess what made it into the May issue. My FOOTSTOOL, or should I say pouf.

Turns out it is not an Ico Parisi, it is a Franco Albini, an Italian architect who created these iconic furniture pieces in the 50's. My divine pouf was originally part of a set as a companion to the Margherita chair.

And the kicker......my little thrift store find is worth $700. If I had the matching chair, it would go for about $3000, but I am not complaining. Just thrilled that I finally know, & of course, that I have legit bragging rights on being able to spot a treasure amongst the trash.

Check out this amazing project from my friend Erin. A self proclaimed design junkie, Erin documents her talents on her blog and is also a regular contributor to the very inspirational blog Houzz.

Using old boards from vintage crates, signs & her own designs, she transformed these scraps of wood into a gallery worthy table.

I love this idea. For the last year I have been collecting old wood yardsticks to do a similar technique to a the top of a small end table, but this project just elevated the bar.

Her attention to detail & clean, modern design is just like her personality.....unique, innovative and beautiful. Well done Erin...well done.

the art of ice

Maybe it is because I grew up in the Midwest (with 4 definite seasons), but I like winter. I really do. It is calm, peaceful, cozy & reflective. So it is no surprise that I had a different perspective when it came to our recent visit to an ice hotel. It really was the beauty of all things winter. Sculpted, carved, illuminated...it was breathtaking.

The hotel uses no metal or wood structures, it is all packed snow. With tables, chairs, glasses even chandeliers carved from special reverse-osmosis ice shipped in from Montreal, the organic combination of hydrogen & oxygen collide into art.

In anytime of day, the hotel just glowed.

I'll be sharing more about our overnight stay & the rest of our trip to Quebec City, but I thought your Friday needed some winter beauty. Click on each image for a more detailed view.

I cannot always explain the random things I pick up. All I know is that a little voice yells...'you need that'.

I often have no idea what the end use for 'said' item, but I do know it stirred a little creative part of me, and for that, it is worth saying YES and letting it marinate.

I got my idea for my racket mirrors from a DIY from Country Living, so when I saw another DIY from Flea Market Style I thought...hey I have got a few of those in my stash, that have just been waiting for a project.

Vintage slide carousels turned into mirrors.

Quite modern yet vintage to the core. I have 3 of these fun mirrors. One black, one charcoal & one light grey. Display together or in a grouping.

All come packaged in their original Kodak box. Think of it as a little extra bit of history.

Twice forgotten finds

A sunny weekend, means time to take some pictures. I have spent the last few weeks digging thru my stash of 'end of season' treasures, which seemed to have escaped my mind once the weather got chilly. From books, to toys, to vintage shelf decor, there were some cool things. Combine those with new styles of racket mirrors and some Fisher Price necklaces, and the shop has been restocked post holidays.

Simple arugula pizza

We have all had those days. Long one at the office, tired, hungry. Not motivated to go out, but nothing in the fridge. There is a solution. Filling, healthy and quick quick quick.

Take a frozen flatbread or cheese pizza, a bag of arugula & some dressing and a little Parmesan. That is it.

For the dressing...take an old spice jar, mix 3 parts extra virgin olive oil to 1 part balsamic vinegar . Sprinkle in a little kosher salt, and if you want to jazz it up a bit...grate a clove of garlic, then give it a good shake.

Cook the pizza according to directions. While it's cooking, toss the greens with the dressing and crack in some fresh ground pepper. When the pizza comes out, layer on the greens, sprinkle on some Parmesan, & slice. The warmth of the pizza wilts the greens just a bit. Easy, easy, easy. You'll feel like you are at a local bistro for about $10. Add a spicy red wine and you've got a date night for 2. If you need something more substantial, throw on some roasted butternut squash, marinated peppers, or some sliced up chicken.

Tree of Thrift

This is a tale of a tacky picture turned tacky art duo.

Several years back, our friend Doug made the move from Chicago to make Madison his home. As a bachelor, his apartment was fairly simple, but he did have some decor gems. In his bathroom... this awesomely gnarly tree picture.

Glued onto a beveled wood plaque, a mustardy gold sky framed the tree. Tacky, but I loved it. Each time he moved, the tree came with him and now lives with him and his new wife.

So when I found a dingier version of the "golden tree" at a thrift store, I snatched it up faster than you could say trash, with an idea of making it a set.

Last weeks was Doug's birthday, so felt it was time the doppelganger made its appearance.

I wanted to make a real contrast, so the dark branches turned white, that mustard sky became violet and the autumn brush was transformed into a lush green moss.

It was a hit. AND in case they were wondering where to put this gem... they have an empty spot on the other side of their bathroom mirror. It's like it was just waiting for its twin.

2012 the Year of the Dragon

Today begins theYear of the Dragon. 2012's dragon is that of the water variety, which happens once every 60 years. The dragon is the only sign in the Chinese zodiac that is mythological, but it is also the most power. The dragon is driven, fearless & willing to take risks. Possessing high energy & prosperity, the year of the dragon brings optimism and hope for the year ahead.

Hotel de Glace

In just 6 weeks, I will be crossing a very cool thing on 'my list'. Staying in an ice hotel.

I studied one summer at the University Laval in Quebec City, Canada and fell in love with the city's European charm. Cobble stone streets, old fortress walls and hearing French everywhere. A return trip, with Nate, has been on the list for awhile and when I saw that Quebec City had an ice hotel it became our next adventure.

The 36 room Hotel de Glace opens today and although only open for 12 weeks, the hotel expects thousands of visitors to their grounds. Ice sculptures, guided tours, snowshoeing and even an ice slide make this man made natural fortress a site to be seen and I just cannot wait.

When you arrive at the hotel, you are greeted with a cocktail in the bar served in what else..an ice glass.

Hot tubs & saunas are both on site and when it is time to retire we'll tuck ourselves in our arctic sleeping bags for a cozy nights sleep.

We are only spending one night at the ice hotel and a couple more in the old city. Until then, I am brushing up on my French, searching for great restaurants and making sure I have lots of warm weather gear.

Blogger recently added a button for it on the design tab, but if you Google it I am sure you will find a method for whatever system you have.

Just one more step towards branding and a new focus for 2012. More DIY's, an expanded vintage shop and an all encompassing website. Exciting stuff indeed!

Favorite Finds of 2011

After a long vacation, I am back an back with a bang for my favorite finds of 2011. Some went right to the shop and others found a special place in my home. I hope they give you some vintage inspiration.

My first is a very special one. This vintage plaid garment bag was sold in November to a prop agent in California for the show Mad Men. Yes, that Mad Men. You can bet I will be scouring each episode this spring for its appearance.

Metal is always a hit and when in the form of these old Zoo 101 it is a no brainer.

While tearing down at last May's Vintage Bazaar, I spotted this darling vintage Christmas house. Complete with glittered snow and stained glass windows, it was the star of my table decor this year.

and while scrounging thru my family barn this summer, I unearthed these fabulous Hot/Cold knobs. Perfectly patina'd and really heavy.

This collection of antique phonograph cylinders is true blast from the past. I found that a tall shot glass (set inside) makes for a darling bud vase and keeps the cardboard sleeve dry.

Sets are always a win and when they are Pyrex and in monochromatic shades of green, they are even better.

This little metal dog will fit right in with my existing pack. I named him Felix.

Letters are still the rage and when they are my husbands initial, this neon castoff could not get in my truck fast enough.

When I am searching for a specific treasure, Etsy is my first stop. This bundle of 1930's funny money was the key element in my Budget Surplus lamp. (now for sale at Hatch Art House)

The thrill of the hunt indeed. A 3-D art piece was missing its star, until a trip to a thrift store made the diorama all come together. Also for sale at Hatch

How about this for nostalgia. A pair of Rock um Sock um Robots.

An Italian finger vase. I thought the periwinkle color was fun on its own but when my fuchsia zinnias are added, it pops even more.

Quirky and fabulous. A trio of mannequin arms was just too random to pass up. I have a great project in mind, but the engineering behind it is presenting some challenges.

Owls may be so 2010, but when they are as cute as this little turquoise bank, it becomes timeless....in my opinion of course.

and lastly....an old fish/bait basket. Filled with a string of lights and hung from my porch ceiling, the glow it provides is just magical.

the Runway

There are projects that I think of and come together in a weekend and there are others that takes months.

My Runway trio for example. The last new piece for last weeks Hatch show. I had an old set of 3 blond kitchen cabinets that I wanted to do use together, but nothing was clicking.

Then- a very clever Etsy-er listed these bundles of colorful vintage buttons. I just liked the way the 3 colors looked together and added them to the supply shelf. It wasn't till months later that I put the 2 together and just knew that the buttons needed to be dresses.

After giving the doors a fresh white coat, I quickly sketched out a rough outline, painted the dress a matching color and just started gluing on the buttons. A little paint by number, a little puzzle constructing, but I achieved what I was hoping.

Now- just needed to give them some personality. Of course they needed different hair dos, but the other parts remained similar. Soft flowy limbs, flirty eyelashes and some ruby red lips.

To top it all off. Barbie boots. Not sure where I picked these up, but I was able to scrounge up 3 pair and these girls were off the the show.

So, that is the show recap. 5 blog posts in one week....I think that is a record. I hope you enjoyed and see you back here soon.

Fridge Philosophy

I wanted to create a little something for the show that everyone could bring home. Something that resembled my style,but in a lower price range. How about jar lid and Altoid tin magnets? I have been collecting them for quite awhile and thought they were a perfect vessel for some inspirational words, colorful images and some 3-D elements.

Throughout many times in my life, I have relied on little quotes or sayings to help me put things in perspective and get me back on track. Like a little mantra or positive message, they really can change your mood. Even if that is just putting a smile on your face.

the Dreaming Chair & League of Justice table

To add some balance to all my wall art for last weeks show, I brought some furniture. Early in the year, I found a wonderfully Mod, yet scratched table that couldn't get in my trunk fast enough.

I was able to keep the hip lines, while covering up all the nicks with one of my go to colorful mediums..comic books.

AND- do you know Magritte. One of my favorite artists. Modern, thought provoking and very surreal.

So when I had come up empty when it came to an old wood school chair, I took a theme from Mr Magritte.

The Dreaming chair is solid wood, a cool turquoise blue and dotted with fluffy little clouds.

Just perfect for a writer's desk or any place you need a bit of reflection. Also, as part of my show, these 2 pieces are available at Hatch Art House. Tomorrow- a philosophical idea for decorating your fridge.

Trois Chats & Peony Power

You already saw the first re-imagined picture I did for the show at Hatch Art House, well since 3 seems to be the theme of this show, I had 2 more to share.

First. Trois Chats-

Too kooky to not pass up

this trio got a cool coral frame

some turquoise eyes

some glittered coats (all in an unique color)

and for whiskers, old retail tag ties.

the other, Peony Power, is a fabric picture.

Snagged at an estate sale, this washed out drawing needed some love.

Bright green and primary yellow trimmed in an old rope

while lush pink peonies and coarse floral greens make this one POP.

OH- and this is a fun twist. In the past, I have used framing grade dust paper to finish the back of the pieces. But, this time I added one more recycled twist.

Fun, right? Like a little extension of the re-cycled art itself.

A big thanks to everyone who came out this Friday for my opening reception. My adorable mother made the trek up to surprise me, and it was great visiting with old friends.

This being my second, you'd think I'd gained a bit of knowledge on budgeting my time, but I had a huge list of projects. Although a few did not make this cut, I was very happy with what I choose. A combo of furniture & wall art with of course lots of color. I'll be highlighting the pieces this week if you did not get a chance to come out.

With Halloween in our rear-view mirror and turkey day right around the corner , time to start thinking about all that holiday shopping and gift giving you need to do. I am not doing any shows this winter, nope not a single one....just shopping, so I will be hitting a few.

a Spring Thing

I just dropped off my first new piece for the show at Hatch next week.

Many might remember this diamond in the rough. Great shapes and size, but just very 1 dimensional.

Well- no more. Spring has sprung.

Yes I know I am the NOVEMBER artist, but it just felt like Spring to me.

Painting the old frame a fresh green didn't hurt.

Then, by using left over paint, floral stems and of course a smidge of glitter, the piece started coming to life.

and a coffee ground road round out the revamp.
