The Comprehensive Campaign for the Lewisburg Area School District

Sunday, December 4, 2016 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Lewisburg Area High School – 545 Newman Road, Lewisburg

This year, we are combining our donor and volunteer recognition reception with our campaign event! The event will begin promptly at 4:00pm with a short presentation in the new auditorium, including the honoring of our many dedicated volunteers. It will be followed by self-guided tours of the new high school that end in the cafeteria. You’ll learn about the progress of the campaign, the impact that our donors’ generous gifts have made and discover how you can be part of the campaign and make a difference for Lewisburg students!

In the cafeteria, you will have the opportunity:

Kindergarten Grill Out 2016

THE KINDERGARTEN GRILL OUT IS POSTPONED UNTIL WEDNESDAY 17TH AT 5:30PM.

Due to the inclement weather predicted for this afternoon, we’ve decided to postpone the Grill-Out. Please spread the word. If you have any questions please feel free to contact annglock@greendragonfoundation.org or call 570-522-8433.

All incoming kindergartners and their families are invited to a grill out at the Lewisburg Area Recreation Park on Tuesday, August 16th from 5:30pm-7pm! The Grill Out will allow incoming kindergartners and their families to meet fellow classmates and families prior to their first day of school.

Lewisburg Area Recreation Park is located at St. Mary’s Street and 15th Street near the pool. We will meet under the large pavilion in the big park by the pool. There is no cost for this event and dinner will be provided for adults and children.

GDF Receives EITC Donation from Giant Foods

Giant Foods recently made a $5,000 gift to The Green Dragon Foundation through Pennsylvania’s EITC program. According to Brooks Gronlund, president of The Green Dragon Foundation, EITC donations are used in support of innovative programs at the Lewisburg Area School District. He continues, “We are so appreciative of Giant Foods for its commitment to our students through this program. We are delighted that they chose to include us in their charitable giving. Lewisburg students will directly benefit from their generosity.”

LAHS Adds National History Club

History teacher Jennifer Boyer-Switala is passionate about the subject she teaches, and her enthusiasm is spreading among students who take her class. Jordan Hartzell, a junior at the high school, is one such student who decided to form the National History club. Jordan thought that the NHC would be a good fit because it was, “a great way for Lewisburg students to be part of a large, national group while still working on self-directed, creative, and fun history projects“. She enlisted Ms. Boyer-Switala as the club’s advisor. The club now has a charter, as the Lewisburg chapter of the National History Club. Ms. Boyer-Switala enjoys being an advisor, but says; “I am really more of a guide, the students do everything for the club.“

The National History club currently has about twenty student members. The students convene to discuss historical topics of personal interest, books they have read, and sometimes, current events such as the presidential race; who can resist that topic? Recently the club meetings focused on a debate. The subject was “what woman from history should be put on the ten dollar bill in 2020?” Ms. Boyer-Switala created a list of 21 eligible women and the format resembled a March madness bracket. The women were debated, two at a time, with the winner advancing to the next round. The final four consisted of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Ida B. Wells, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Rosa Parks. The students were so engrossed in the debate that it continued for six club meetings. Ida B. Wells was the ultimate winner.

The club received a $500 donation from The Green Dragon Foundation in October 2015. They have used the money to facilitate projects that they have organized, such as the school-wide trivia challenge during black history month. As the club continues to take on momentum, and more members, they are hoping to use GDF money to organize a historical works research symposium. Students would read a work of historic fiction or nonfiction, research the period in history, write a report, and create a presentation that would be shared at a public event. In addition, the club plans to organize a History Honors Society that would recognize students at graduation.

Jordan Hartzell said that while the high school has many academic clubs available, there was not one for students interested in history. Her goal in starting the NHC at Lewisburg was “to start an organization in which passionate students could connect and share their interests outside of the classroom“. It appears that the students, with the guidance of Ms. Boyer-Switala, are enjoying that opportunity.

The cocktail reception will feature complimentary wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres. The Master of Ceremonies will be NFL Quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was one of Brandon’s college roommates.
