NEW WEBSITE OFFERS NATION’S FIRST RESOURCE FOR GREEN AUTO INSURANCE
NASHVILLE, TN, APRIL 14, 2009: Blue Haggard, LLC announces the launch of its new web property, EcoSmartInsurance.com, the internet’s first website dedicated to recognizing and promoting environmentally-friendly auto insurance companies. Using a good, better, best scale EcoSmartInsurance.com helps consumers find out if their current auto insurance provider is green. If not, the site offers users many options to choose a greener alternative to their current provider.

Publisher Michael O’Dell says, “The U.S. is behind much of the developed world in choosing eco-friendly auto insurance. So this site is a way for the nation’s green consumers to start speaking with their wallets when looking to insure a car.” EcoSmartInsurance.com awards good, better and best recognition to insurance providers based on a number of factors including: environmental policy, giving back to the community, paperless billing, discounts for hybrids and pay-as-you-drive (PAYD) programs. Of the country’s many auto insurance companies only about 20 make the cut as “green” auto insurance providers. O’Dell says, “lots of insurance companies offer, say, paperless billing. But few really make green practices part of their business imperatives.”

Among the nation’s greenest auto insurers are the biggest names. State Farm, Progressive, Geico, Allstate and Esurance take the top five spots. However, a crop of smaller and newer insurers are making big strides in eco-conscious insurance. “MileMeter is making a big mark as the first PAYD program down in Texas. We hope to see these guys grow and other similar by-the-mile programs spring up as more states allow this kind of policy”, states O’Dell.

ABOUT EcoSmartInsurance.com
EcoSmartInsurance.com is the web’s first comprehensive resource for finding and selecting green auto insurance. Based on research of several hundred car insurers the site gives environmentally-minded consumers recommendations for the top green insurance providers in their state. Thanks to a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, EcoSmartInsurance.com will preserve 250 square feet of rainforest for every completed green insurance quote through the organization’s Rain Forest Rescue® program. To find out more, visit http://www.ecosmartinsurance.com.

Who hasn’t been enraged to read about how Ford and G.M. can make perfectly good little gas sippers in Europe, but just can’t bring themselves to make a fuel efficient car for us back home?

Well, now that they need some funding from us, here’s an idea. Let’s fund Detroit just to set up their efficient European car factories — back here, where they are really needed. Let’s get some better gas mileage out of their money troubles.

Apparently, it only costs $75 million to completely retool a plant, to produce an efficient little car instead of the gas-guzzling behemoth they were fobbing off on us fools all these years.

» See peer reviews of Fuel Efficient Cars at Green Home

Detroit needs money, and we need efficient vehicles. Let’s make a deal: We taxpayers will provide the funding to retool their factories to build just the specific models that are in the Common Good. We’ll fund retooling to build any models that help solve the climate crisis by getting better than 50 mpg, right now. It’s a win-win. Full Article

WENATCHEE — Thirteen ordinary Toyota Prius hybrids drove into the Wenatchee Valley College auto shop early last week.
They drove out with even better gas mileage, a direct link to the feds and the hopes of many for a future less dependent on fossil fuels.
“This is all about a convergence of the auto industry with the electric-utility industry,” said Ron Johnston-Rodriguez, economic development director at the Port of Chelan County. “It used to be just about Detroit and oil.”
All 13 of the cars, and the port’s own Prius, are part of the port’s “PHEV Pilot Project.”
Starting this week, they’ll be part of a U.S. Department of Energy data-collection program designed to track the performance of some 130 modified Priuses nationwide under normal road conditions.
All the cars in the test, including the 14 in the port’s pilot project, have been converted into “PHEVs” — plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
Priuses already run on electricity at low speeds and for short distances. Their gasoline engine adds some kick for higher speeds and longer trips.
Plug-in hybrids are fitted with an additional set of long-life lithium ion batteries that extend their all-electric range to about 30 miles. Gas mileage can increase to 100 miles per gallon or more, depending on the driver.
The extra battery pack charges by plugging it into a standard wall outlet — the connector is installed in the cars’ rear bumpers.
Expert installers from the Green Car Co. of Bellevue were in town to convert all 13 of the port program’s Priuses.
The cars are part of regional fleets belonging to the program’s 12 regional “enrollees,” that include the city of Wenatchee, Chelan County, Wenatchee Valley College and the Douglas County PUD. Full Article

Whether you drive a gas-guzzling SUV or a green-running hybrid, you can increase your car’s gas mileage by making conscious but simple and effective improvements in the way you drive. Become a hypermiler!

Hypermiling is a term that refers to a set of driving techniques that maximize fuel economy (and minimize fuel waste) and, thus, saves you money at the gasoline pump.

The May 9, 2006 CNN article “Take it slow and save big on gas” talks about saving extra fuel and therefore money by changing your driving style.

It is talking about hypermiling.

The CNN article states, “You can get 35 percent better fuel mileage out of your current vehicle by using a device most drivers already have….That would be your right foot.”

The article says that for big gains in fuel savings, you need to lay off the accelerator.

CNN states, “Accelerating more slowly away from green lights and stopping more gradually for red lights cut fuel consumption in Edmunds.com’s tests by 35.4 percent for the Land Rover and 27.1 percent for the Mustang.” Full Article
