Condom Thieves Strike in Mumbai

The Indian city of Mumbai has been recently and mysteriously hit with an onslaught of condom thefts. Resisting the urge to chuckle at this moment may not be easy, but please consider doing so, because AIDS and HIV-prevention activists fear that these thefts could adversely affect the sexual health of the city’s residents.

Criminals have broken into more than 500 of the 3,000 condom vending machines installed in Mumbai as part of an HIV-Aids prevention program.

Officials feel motives may vary; some say it’s for fun, others for small change and still others feel the motive is to get free condoms. Whatever be the case, the Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trusts (HLFPPT), who provide the vending machines in conjunction with other organizations, are highly concerned.

The Indian state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai (Bombay) is the capital, has one of the highest numbers of HIV infected people.

“These machines are installed in areas where high risk people like truck drivers are likely to visit. Often these places also have drug addicts or petty thieves… When a machine is damaged, then you have to factor how many people would go without a condom. One of the guidelines is that a person should be able to procure one within 15 minutes. It is not easy to get people to use to condoms and take them from these machines,” says Rajesh Nainakwal of HLFPP.

The damage to hundreds of the more than 3,000 machines, which are usually loaded with 20 packs of condoms each, goes beyond financial loss, although the dynamo in the machines fetch good prices in the “grey” markets. They are always needed in slot machines in video parlors.

Many officials have expressed concern over what they believe is police apathy. No action has been taken against the vandals whom police believe are drunks and drug addicts. Social workers are advocating a shift of relocation for these machines to safer areas like hospitals or washrooms and 24×7 manned toilets.

The theft of condoms may be strange, but it is no laughing matter in a country laden with the HIV virus and full blown AIDS.

Iranian plane catches fire on landing

A plane carrying pilgrims in Iran has caught fire while landing at Mashhad, in the north-east of the country.

State media said almost 170 people were on board and that at least 46 were injured. There were no reports of fatalities.

The plane, a Russian-built Tupolev 154 owned by Taban Air, suffered serious damage as it landed, losing its undercarriage and a wing.

The rear end of the plane broke up after the passengers were evacuated.

Reza Jafarzadeh, spokesman for Iranian civil aviation, said the plane had left the city of Abadan, in south-west Iran, on Saturday, but bad weather had forced it to land in the central city of Isfahan for the night, according to state television.

After taking off again on Sunday, the captain was forced to make an emergency landing in Mashhad because of a passenger's health problems, he said.

Iranian news networks released pictures of the tail of the plane burning, with smoke billowing from the end of the plane.

There have been a number of accidents involving Iranian aviation over the last few years.

Its civil fleet is made up of old planes in poor condition due to their age and lack of maintenance.

Last July a passenger plane burst into flames while landing in Mashhad, killing 17 passengers.

10 days earlier, a Tupolev plane had caught fire mid-air and crashed in northern Iran, killing all 168 people on board.

That incident was the third deadly crash of a Tupolev 154 in Iran since 2002.

'Bin Laden tape' warns Obama of more attacks

A tape said to be from al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has warned US President Barack Obama there will be more attacks if the US continues to support Israel.

In the newly released audio tape aired on al-Jazeera, Bin Laden says the US will never live in peace until there is "peace in Palestine".

The authenticity of the audio tape has not been verified.

The message claims al-Qaeda was behind the 25 December attempt to blow up a passenger plane bound for the US.

A Nigerian man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has been charged with attempting to blow up the Delta Airlines plane as it approached Detroit from Amsterdam.

'No safe life'

The voice recording says that the message is from "Osama to Obama".

The Washington-based IntelCenter, which monitors terror group communications, said the message was a possible indicator of an attack within the next 12 months.

'Hero' Abdulmutallab

In a reference to the plane plot, the message said: "If it was possible to carry our messages to you by words we wouldn't have carried them to you by planes."

It said: "The message sent to you with the attempt by the hero Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is a confirmation of our previous message conveyed by the heroes of September 11."

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab allegedly tried to set off a bomb hidden in his underwear but it failed to explode. He said he had been trained by al-Qaeda in Yemen.

White House adviser David Axelrod said the US could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the tape.

"But assuming that it is him [Bin Laden], his message contains the same hollow justifications for the mass slaughter of innocents that we've heard before," Mr Axelrod told CNN.

The al-Qaeda in the Arabian peninsula group has already claimed it was behind the Christmas Day bombing.

The BBC's Kim Ghattas in Washington says the message may cast some light over the inner workings of al-Qaeda and its affiliates.

Some US intelligence officials said the tape was an attempt by the al-Qaeda leader to portray himself as in direct command of the organisation and all its offshoots.

Analysts have long debated whether bin Laden is really in control, our correspondents says.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Andy David told Associated Press news agency: "This is nothing new; he has said this before. Terrorists always look for absurd excuses for their despicable deeds."

UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband said he needed to study the message but pointed to the importance of the Detroit plot as "an attack on the West rather than an attack within the Middle East".

He added: "It obviously demonstrates both the dangers that exist, but also the links that can exist between different terrorist groups."

The al-Qaeda leader issues sporadic tape messages, the last being in September 2009 when President Obama was warned he was "powerless" to stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The last purported Bin Laden video appeared in September 2007, when he referred to French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who had both recently come to power.

ADE-651 Magic Wand Bomb Detector Is a Fraud, Probably Killed Hundreds

Jim McCormick promised his ADE-651 wand could identify anything, including bombs, simply by waving it around with the right RFID card inside. Yeah, totally fake, and now he's in prison. Too bad Iraq already spent £85 million on them.Updated.

Literally, the $40,000 (apiece) devices did absolutely nothing. Nada. Zilch. Experts think the insides contained nothing more than a dumb RFID card. Powered by nothing. Nope, not even a power supply. Just some snake oil, if that. $85 million!

Even worse, "inventor" McCormick was a firm, open believer in dowsing (as in, finding water with a stick), and that's what the device was based on. Dowsing!

The BBC ran an investigative report on the device, during which McCormick claimed, without breaking his stride, that the device could detect explosives up to one kilometer away. Video below (money shot at 7:30 when the insides are shown to be empty)

Now the money lost is bad, but the loss of life is worse. Immeasurable. Security personnel and Iraqi soldiers were using these powerless dowsing rod devices in the field to detect bombs at security checkpoints and who knows where else. Scores died with this murderous thing gripped tightly in their hands. Hundreds more when the security checkpoints, armed with these devices, failed to protect them.

Update: We ran the US's doubts on this device in November. This story confirms without a doubt that devices were fake, probably resulted in hundreds of deaths, and that McCormick, thankfully for the human race, has been arrested and is awaiting trial (although he's currently out on bail). Current NASA Administrator and former astronaut Charles Bolden, speaking a few weeks ago at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society, explained how our nation's space program is at a crossroads and pledged to continue manned missions into space.

A combination of the federal budget deficit and a number of successful unmanned space endeavors—think Hubble, Mars Rovers—has dimmed Dubya's plan to put man back in space in a big way. Bolden, however, refuses to let the Astronaut die on his watch.

"I do not see this president being the president who presides over the end of human spaceflight," he said. Bolden expressed an interest in partnering with other nations on practical manned missions, in addition to continuing to develop more efficient space flight technologies. Still, there are many powerful voices who consider manned spaceflight a frivolous endeavor.

Apple Moves Forward with Tablet's Trademark-Infringing "iPad" Name, Reveals Potential Features in Filing

The Jesus Tablet Blog recently uncovered documents deep within the US Patent Offices suggesting that the iPad was the Apple Tablet's name based on their battles against Fujitsu for it. Now they're moving ahead with a U.S. trademark battle.

So, to recap: Fujitsu trademarked iPad, and Apple filed to oppose the trademark back on September 1, 2009, literally, the first day Apple was even able to oppose Fujitsu's iPad name. Ryan noted that Apple's just been trying to kill time up until this point:

Apple lawyers haven't yet filed any specific complaints about Fujitsu's "iPAD" mark yet, they've just asked for time, and then more time, to put together arguments against the name. So it's entirely possible Apple just wants to preserve the option of naming its tablet the "iPad" up until launch, expected to come at a press event Jan. 27.

But it now appears that they're going through with it anyway. Having already filed for the international trademark, they're going for the US trademark as well.

IP Application Development LLC, a company linked to Apple that has filed patents in internationally for the iPad mark, has now filed an application to trademark "iPad" in the United States as well. The application is dated January 16, and appears to have been posted to the US Patent and Trademark Office website today. The application was filed under Filing Basis 1(b) and 44(d). According to the USPTO website, Filing Basis 1(b) refers to the "bona fide intention to use a mark in commerce" and 44(b) refers to the "claim of priority, based on an earlier-filed foreign application under §44(d)." Looks like last week's international filings were a precursor to this filing under 44(d).

Fun! Apple thinks they have the god-given right to iPad. Despite the fact that they couldn't file even though they didn't go after it until now, which is funny, considering they've had the iPod out in stores for, what, seven years? And it sounds a whole hell of a lot like the iPod! Anyway! Even more revealing is this:

The application covers hundreds of goods and services including: computers, books, games, and telecommunications. Interestingly, one service being applied for "enables users to program the scheduling of audio, video, text and other multimedia content, including music, concerts, videos, radio, television, news, sports, games, cultural events, and entertainment-related programs as they will be aired".

Don't know what that is, but it sounds dangerously awesome and Jesus Tablet-y! Or iPad-y. Or whatever. The point is this machine is called something and that something is probably "iPad" and if you name your kid "iPod" so help you god because they will not stop until his soul is sucked out his ass or his name is changed or he belongs to Steve Jobs. Bottom line.

Israeli PM plays down minister's Lebanon war claim

Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel sought peace with its neighbours

Israel's prime minister has distanced himself from comments by a member of his cabinet who suggested Israel was heading for a new war with Lebanon.

Israel was "not seeking any conflict" with Lebanon, Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Earlier, Yossi Peled, minister without portfolio and a reserve army general, had said that a repeat of the 2006 war with Lebanon was only a matter of time.

More than 1,000 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and about 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers, died in the conflict.

"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarifies that Israel is not seeking any conflict with Lebanon," the Israel leader said in a statement on Saturday.

"Israel seeks peace with its neighbours."

The statement came shortly after comments by Mr Peled were broadcast in which the minister said Israel was "heading towards a new confrontation".

"In my estimation, understanding and knowledge it is almost clear to me that it is a matter of time before there is a military clash in the north," he said.

The 2006 war began when Israel launched air and sea attacks on targets in Lebanon, after Lebanese militant group Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers.

During the conflict, Hezbollah fired thousands of rockets into Israel.

Google builds loyal following in China

Google launched its Chinese site only in 2006, but it has already attracted a loyal following of dedicated users in China.

They use the site to send e-mails, look up maps and translate material from Chinese into English, or visa versa.

There are other China-based websites that are more popular - most notably the search engine Baidu.com - but some will mourn if Google pulls out of China.

The US firm said recently that it was no longer willing to continue censoring its China-based site in line with official regulations.

Information censored

Liao Yuting, a first-year journalism student at the People's University of China in Beijing, said many think it will be a disaster if Google shuts down.

"My friends and I went to the headquarters of Google in Beijing when it made its statement. We wanted to witness a historical event," said the 18 year old.

"Google is a symbol of the internet in some ways - Google is part of our lives."

Despite Google's obvious success in attracting Chinese users, many people agree with China's determination to censor the firm's search engine.

Chinese users are not able to access results for sensitive words, such as Tiananmen massacre, a reference to the bloody crackdown on protesters in Beijing in 1989.

Google says it's no longer willing to accept censorship

Student Wang Xin, also studying at the People's University, said: "I really would like to have free access to information, but I'm not recommending that everyone have this right."

He said China was a big country - and not everyone could be trusted to use information in a responsible way.

This student's views echo those of his government.

Officials said riots and demonstrations in the western region of Xinjiang last July were fanned by the spread of information by text messages and the internet.

The government shut down both in the region following the unrest, and is only now gradually allowing limited services to resume.

"Maybe it's reasonable to have some extent of censorship here in China," added Mr Wang, who is 22.

But even he uses Google's e-mail service because he says his Chinese account does not always allow him to receive messages from abroad.

Baidu has a much larger share of China's search market than Google

Of course, not everyone uses Google - the firm's big rival in China is Baidu.

Figures vary but, according to internet research firm Analysys International, Baidu had 58% of China's search engine market in the final quarter of last year, followed by 36% for Google China.

Many users in China prefer Baidu because they say it provides a better service. The translation service, for example, is more accurate.

"Generally speaking, I use Baidu first, and then I use Google as a back up. Baidu is better with Chinese searches," said Guo Chao, a third-year student at China's prestigious Peking University.

His fellow student, 23-year-old Ma Delin, said he preferred to use Peking University's own research website when looking for information because the sources are more dependable.

"I rarely use Google for academic purposes, but I use it for entertainment or news information," he said.

But, as journalism student Liao Yuting put it, Google has become a symbol of the internet and many Chinese people support its recent stance.

"In the past, I have always been very supportive of our country's positions," said one internet user after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's criticism of China's internet censorship.

"Now I suddenly feel that I really agree with the views of the US. Have I just woken up?"

Two Chinese pop singers have fallen foul of a lip-synching ban, facing fines of up to $12,000 (£7,400) for allegedly miming at a concert.

The firm that put on their 2009 show insists Yin Youcan and Fang Ziyuan are dancers and says it cannot find them.

Miming was banned in China after a girl was revealed to have lip-synched at the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony.

The actual singer, a seven-year old with crooked teeth, was not considered pretty enough to appear.

Instead a nine-year-old girl who was deemed to look more suitable mouthed along to a recording, charming a worldwide audience and earning the title of China's "smiling angel".

China was embarrassed by the revelations and authorities in the Chinese province of Sichuan now say Yin Youcan and Fang Ziyuan must pay the fines.

In December 2008, China banned lip-synching from the nation's biggest TV show, held to celebrate Chinese New Year.

The broadcasting regulator ordered organisers to pick "real" singers and songs with "healthy" lyrics.

The Ministry of Culture said in 2008 it would revoke the licences of professional performers who are caught lip-synching twice during a two-year period.

And at 2007's year's Spring Festival Gala, actress Zhang Ziyi was criticised for miming her way through her performance in the patriotic, star-studded TV extravaganza.

As a result, China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television issued an order on its website to "choose performers with real singing ability".

Italy paparazzi probe said to involve Lapo Elkann photo

Italian prosecutors have begun a fresh investigation into the alleged blackmail of prominent figures by paparazzi, Italian newspapers say.

The prosecutors believe the rogue photographers may have extorted payments in return for withholding compromising photos, the papers said.

One prominent name mentioned is that of Lapo Elkann, a flamboyant Fiat heir.

Prosecutors reportedly believe 300,000 euros (£263,000) were paid to prevent photos of him being published.

The fresh investigation is said to involve a total of about 20 alleged cases of blackmail.

The targets of the scam include some of Italy's top TV personalities and politicians.

Four people are under investigation, including two photographers, the head of a photo agency, and an entrepreneur involved in public relations, according to Milanese newspaper Corriere della Sera.

Prosecutors are building on a earlier investigation that led to the conviction of one of Italy's most notorious celebrity photographers, Fabrizio Corona.

Recently freed, he is testifying in the new investigation and has suggested that Italians are about to be shocked by a new flood of revelations.

Lapo Elkann previously became headline news in 2005, when he was found in a coma after taking a near-fatal overdose while in the company of a group of transsexuals.

Mr Elkann is a grandson of former Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli.

Woman kills lover by sitting on him

Mia Landingham has admitted to killing her boyfriend after a fight by sitting on him.

A US woman weighing 136kg has admitted to killing her much smaller boyfriend by sitting on him.

Mia Landingham pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Mikal Middleston-Bey, who weighs just 54.4kg, FOX8 News reports.

Landingham was sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours community service. She was immediately released from jail.

Police said the couple, who share three children together, were arguing last August when Landingham sat on Middleston-Bey.

Middleston-Bey died of asphyxiation .

The pair had a long history of domestic abuse, according to Landingham's lawyer.

Landingham said she was sorry for squashing her boyfriend.

"I just want to say that I am sincerely sorry about this situation... I wish I could take it back."

Middleston-Bey's family were angered by the sentence.

"So basically you can say that I can go sit on somebody and get probation?" a family member said.

"I feel there wasn't no justice."

Google Voice Extension For Chrome Lets You Click and Call

Yesterday Google updated their Google Voice extension for Chrome, allowing Voice-heads to call numbers directly from their browsers. If you love Google or hate retyping phone numbers, this one's for you.

One of the great things about upgrading to a smartphone years ago was that all numbers were links. The updated Voice extension for Chrome allows for a similar streamlining in your browser.

The extension basically just turns phone numbers into clickable links, eliminating the need to cut and paste them across windows. It also adds a phone icon to Chrome, letting you quickly place calls and choose the number from which you do so. While it's a nice step towards a lazier future, there are some caveats. Mac users, for example, will need to install the latest Chromium build, not just the regular old Chrome, to gain the functionality.

Venezuela oil 'may double Saudi Arabia'

Venezuela holds the largest oil reserves outside the Middle East

A new US assessment of Venezuela's oil reserves could give the country double the supplies of Saudi Arabia.

Scientists working for the US Geological Survey say Venezuela's Orinoco belt region holds twice as much petroleum as previously thought.

The geologists estimate the area could yield more than 500bn barrels of crude oil.

This assessment is far more optimistic than even the best case scenario put forward by President Hugo Chavez.

The USGS team gave a mean estimate of 513bn barrels of "technically recoverable" oil in the Orinoco belt.

Chris Schenk of the USGS said the estimate was based on oil recovery rates of 40% to 45%.

Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), Venezuela's state oil company, has not commented on the news.

However, Venezuelan oil geologist and former PDVSA board member Gustavo Coronel was sceptical.

"I doubt the recovery factor could go much higher than 25% and much of that oil would not be economic to produce", he told Associated Press news agency.

Venezuela holds the largest oil reserves outside the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has proven reserves of 260bn barrels.

Haiti quake victim rescue operation declared over

Humanitarian relief is being scaled up as rescue efforts come to an end

Haiti's government has made the "heartbreaking" decision to declare the search and rescue phase for survivors of the earthquake over, the UN says.

The announcement came a day after two people, an 84-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man, were pulled alive from the rubble in Port-au-Prince.

The UN spokeswoman Elizabeth Byrs says 132 people have been rescued since the earthquake 11 days ago.

On Friday the official government death toll from the quake rose to 110,000.

Speaking in Geneva, Ms Byrs said that the decision to end the rescue operation was "heartbreaking" but that it had been taken on the advice of experts.

She said most search and rescue teams would now be leaving Haiti, although some with heavy lifting equipment may stay to help with the clean-up operation and with aid distribution.

She added that humanitarian relief efforts were still being scaled up in Port-au-Prince, as well as in the towns of Jacmel, Leogane and other areas affected by the earthquake.

The BBC's Adam Mynott, at a university building in Port-au-Prince where many people are feared buried, says there has been some disquiet among Haitians about the decision to end search efforts.

But although two people were pulled out alive in the capital on Friday, it is believed rescue teams have detected no new signs of life under the rubble for the past three days, our correspondent says.

Rescued after 10 days in rubble

On Friday an 84-year-old woman was found in the wreckage of her home seriously injured and severely dehydrated.

She is being treated by doctors at the main city hospital with intravenous fluids and drugs.

Her son said he had heard her cries on Thursday morning and, almost a day later, he dug her out with the help of friends.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old man, Emmannuel Buso, was pulled out alive by an Israeli search team and is said to be in a stable condition.

Speaking from his hospital bed he described coming out of the shower when the earthquake hit.

He said he had no food, and drank his own urine to keep thirst at bay.

The head of the Israeli team, Major Amir Ben David, said the rescue had given hope more people could be found alive.

No decision has yet been taken on whether the Israeli team will now go home, the Associated Press news agency reported.

More than 1,000 mourners gathered on Saturday by Port-au-Prince's shattered Roman Catholic Cathedral for the funeral of Haiti's Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot and a vicar, Charles Benoit.

President Rene Preval attended the service, joined by New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan and the Vatican's ambassador to Haiti.

"I came here to pay my respects to all the dead from the earthquake, and to see them have a funeral," mourner Esther Belizair told AP, saying that she had lost a cousin.

Few funeral services have been held in Haiti for those killed by the quake.

At least 75,000 bodies have so far been buried in mass graves, Haiti's government has said. Many more remain uncollected in the streets.

The 20-minute long daily broadcast, called Connexion Haiti, will try to give people up-to-date information about the basic services they need to survive - such as where to find food, clean drinking water, medical assistance and shelter.

An estimated 1.5 million people were left homeless by the 7.0-magnitude quake, which some have estimated has killed as many as 200,000 people.

The UN says 130,000 people have now been relocated out of Port-au-Prince, easing the pressure on overcrowded camps in the city.

Meanwhile the UN agency the World Food Programme says it has increased its food aid to survivors.

Speaking after a two-day evaluation mission to Port-au-Prince, the executive director of WFP, Josette Sheeran, said that on Friday the agency had delivered about 2 million meals.

"This is the most complex operation WFP has ever launched," she said.

"Haiti's entire supply chain infrastructure has been devastated, and we have been faced with launching an operation from scratch."

A benefit concert featuring more than 100 music and Hollywood stars has been broadcast around the world to raise money for the victims of the earthquake.
