Through the grant funding, the City is providing the RecyclePro indoor/outdoor recycling containers to complexes to be used in common areas to help increase their recycling and decrease trash use. In-home recycling tote bags and can crushers are also being provided. Approximately half of the housing in La Mesa is multifamily.

While researching different recycling container options, the City determined that the RecyclePro was the best fit for durability, functionality, appearance and cost. The City is supplying 230 cans to dozens of properties for use in areas such as lobbies, pools, laundry rooms, community rooms, and mail box spaces. The cans will be used for recycling of cans and bottles, as well as paper and other common recyclables.

Distribution of the cans will begin next week and conclude by mid-March 2012. At the end of the grant in September, a final report will be submitted to CalRecycle including data on recycling rates at properties receiving the RecyclePro recycling containers versus other types of containers. Some properties are only getting in-home bags and/or can crushers and there is also a control group that’s not participating at all.

RecyclePro Recycling Containers have covers and bodies that are silk screened with clear messages and logos that look professional and last indefinitely. Organizations, businesses and municipalities can do their part by instituting recycling programs and installing easy to use and locate recycling containers.

By installing recycling programs, organizations and communities help society be more conscientious. By making recycling easy, with easy to locate and use recycling containers, recycling becomes a habit that is easy to pass on to future generations.

The steps in the recycling process generate financial, environmental, and social returns, and many of the benefits have local as well as global effects.

The steps in the “recycling loop” entail collections of recyclable materials with recycling bins, processing those materials, manufacturing products such as picnic tables and swing sets from those recycled materials and then the buying of recycled products. This creates a circle or loop that ensures the overall success and value of recycling.

Purchasing recycled products completes the recycling loop. By “buying recycled,” governments, as well as businesses and individual consumers, each play an important role in making the recycling process a success.
On average, states recycle about 33% percent of municipal solid wastes, from soda cans to glass bottles.

The fifth-annual Green-Business Conference was held in Columbia, South Carolina. Business owners discussed their green business and sustainability efforts.

Recycling can mean increased jobs and saved revenues for states. In South Carolina alone, whose municipal solid waste recycling is only 22%, recycling has an estimated $6.5 billion impact on the state’s economy with 15,600 “identifiable jobs” and an impact on 38,000 total jobs – numbers that would rise with more recycling.

If every South Carolinian, business and residents, would increase recycling efforts, South Carolina could easily double the existing recycling workforce, creating hundreds of jobs throughout the state.

As in many cities in the West, Midwest and Northeast, recycling in Columbia, South Carolina is voluntary rather than mandatory, and the state’s more rural areas lack recycling programs altogether.

However, along with developing municipal recycling programs, states should also develop ways to attract and grow sustainable businesses such as incentives, tax reform, infrastructure maintenance and educational funding.

The Fibrex line of recycling containers is available for sale in South Carolina through our distributor: South Eastern Waste Equipment, Mr. Rex Norris, 951 Hampton Hill Road, Columbia, (803) 782-4898.

School Playgrounds made from Recycled Milk Jugs Have Many Roles in Our Children's Schools

School playgrounds are a hot topic. Here's how to get started.

Companies everywhere are ramping up efforts to recycle, but sustainability starts with your employees. They're the ones printing the sheets of paper and using the soda cans that often easily end up in the trash can.

In the average workplace, about 80% to 90% of solid waste is actually recyclable, according to the EPA.

Establishing an office recycling program won't just reduce your carbon footprint, but it could also save your business money. Here's how to get started.

The first step to setting up an effective recycling program is to figure out exactly what's going into the trash. Then, you can figure out which products are recyclable and which ones you want to include in your workplace recycling initiative. Do this is by reaching out to whoever collects your recycling, whether it's your municipal waste management program or your building management, and ask them exactly what they recycle and what they don't.

But start small. Don’t overwhelm emplooyees by offering them 20 different items that they can put into recycling containers.

Paper products are a typical place to start. In U.S. workplaces, one to two pounds of paper product waste is generated on average each day.

Beverage containers, too, are a no-brainer; most workers go through as many as 3 a day.

Recycling Bins, separate for paper and for soda cans and other beverage containers, should be conveniently located. If employees are allowed to have soda at their desk, recycling containers should not only be located in the break room.

Whatever you decide to recycle, you'll need to appoint a coordinator to oversee and organize the program. This person should ideally be someone who is enthusiastic about sustainability and willing to help plan and see the entire recycling initiative through.
They also report that one-third of adults in the U.S. have gone on camping trips in the past five years. Camping continues to be a strong and viable vacation option even in this uncertain economy. Many retirees opt for camping in their golden years, rather than staying in their homes. Families are also going tent and RV camping more frequently these days.

Most of us take the time to recycle at home. But when you are visiting different campgrounds, it is not as easy to recycle when the option is not made available to you. Surprisingly, many campgrounds do not recycle.

If a campground doesn't provide recycling receptacles for their visitors, the limited space in an RV can fill quickly while the visitor stores recyclables to be offloaded once they've left the park. Campgrounds need to make recycling containers available to the growing number of campers.

Recycling opportunities for campers and picnickers exist at all five full-facility Broward County, Florida campgrounds. Broward County has been utilizing the Profile 6 Recycling containers to make it more convenient for campers to maintain their recycling programs when out in the wilderness, thus reducing their carbon footprint while visiting the beauty of nature.

The Profile line of containers, manufactured by the Fibrex Group, are very attractive in appearance and easy to use. Made from quality fiberglass with a high gloss gelcoat finish, these containers need little maintenance and will perform beautifully year after year.

It seems logical that campgrounds would be one of the most obvious places to be green and close the loop. If you would like more information on how you can implement a recycling program at your state park, campground or picnic area contact the Fibrex Group.

Recycling Centers for Beaches and Boardwalks Help Tourists Keep the Shoreline Clean

Ahhh, the beach: sand, surf, sun, & seagulls. There's something about the calming sound of the waves and the relaxing feel of the sand between your toes.

However, coastal development, erosion, and water pollution are issues that go hand in hand with shoreline development. Increasing numbers of tourists visiting beaches every year take an environmental toll, putting coastal areas and the wildlife that inhabit them at risk. Careless visitors and an insufficient amount of trash and recycling containers are a danger to our beaches and boardwalks.

The City of Miami Beach, Florida understands both the importance of keeping their city clean and their tourists happy, as well as the environmental implications of bad trash collecting and recycling habits. The City is utilizing the Envirodesign Recycled Plastic Lumber Recycling Centers for their beachfront areas. These recycling centers are made from 95% post consumer content recycled plastic (milk jugs) and are available in 25, 32, or 55 gallon options. They are made in many sizes and colors and are designed especially for the collection of both waste and recyclables at non-residential locations.

The Envirodesign Recycling Receptacles best serves the needs of the Miami Beach community because their modular configuration offers the perfect option for public area recycling and waste collection centers.

When visiting your local beach this summer, make a difference. Recycling is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Leave those footprints on the sand only!

Look for Recycling Stations at Rest Stops and Welcome Centers

With the summer months come family vacations and road trips. How many of you have stopped at one of the numerous Welcome Centers or Rest Areas at the side of the road en-route to your destination? Keeping these respites attractive, landscaped and clean is imperative to the face of the city or state in which they are located. The Town of Nags Head's Welcome Center in North Carolina understands this and has incorporated the Profile 6 recycling container in their welcome center and various locations throughout the beach community.

The Profile line of recycling collection containers, manufactured by The Fibrex Group, are very attractive in appearance and easy to use. Made from quality fiberglass with a high gloss gelcoat finish, these containers need little maintenance and will perform beautifully year after year.

Rest stops are built to allow motorists to rest on long trips, eat, refuel, and get directions and brochures from the information booth. Most states across the country have rest stops within the first 10 miles of their state border for tourists to visit. The point is to allow the motorist a place to stop without putting them on unfamiliar roads. Since there is a large amount of waste generated at welcome centers on the highway, recycling containers are a must.

Welcome Centers and Rest Areas set the tone and image of the state in which they are located. It is essential to make it convenient for visitors to continue their practice of recycling while on vacation, as well as maintaining the ecology of the locality. For more information on Recycling containers for the welcome centers and rest areas in your state, contact the Fibrex Group today.

Resort Recycling, Necessary and on the Rise

Resort communities are part of one of our nation’s most important and fastest growing industries. Travel and tourism accounts for a large percent of all international trade. Since 1950, total annual expenditure on tourism has risen from $2 billion to annual worldwide revenues of $476 billion. This amount exceeds the combined Gross National Product of the world’s 55 poorest countries.
Every community needs a recycling program in place. However, for those communities that rely on tourism as a mainstay for their local economy, it is even more important.

It is human nature to care for our own space and communities more than we care for other's. Therefore, it is very important for areas that rely on scenic views and beautiful vistas to provide easy recycling and waste disposal for their guests.

As visitors to new locations, we do not necessarily notice when a resort location is spotless and clean, but we do notice when it is dirty and littered with trash. When a community counts on tourism, especially if it is seasonal, it is imperative that that community is clean.

However, aside from the economic benefits to recycling: tourism revenue, job opportunities and utilization of resources; there are obviously other benefits as well. Mountains and oceans comprise the majority of vacation destinations and represent more than half of the the earth's fragile life sustaining ecosystems. Ocean and mountain environments are sensitive and are essential for normalizing climate. Increased access to these areas means that tourism has become a source of environmental stress and often significant environmental degradation. The tourism industry is obligated to minimize environmental degradation.

Cities such as North Myrtle Beach rise to the challenge. Fibrex Group supplied the Profile 6 recycling container to North Myrtle Beach to minimize the negative environmental effect of their tourism industry. With this area of South Carolina being a resort and recreation area, and reliant on the economics of tourism, Myrtle Beach felt obligated to keep the area clean by having access to recycling containers for visitors.

By taking the time to recycle, you reduce the need for landfills and incineration while simultaneously helping to conserve national resources such as timber, water, and minerals, sustaining the environment for future generations.

Chicago Recycling Initiative Increases Access to Recycling Bins in Chicago Parks by 125%

The Chicago Park District approved an initiative to promote 2,500 recycling bins throughout the Chicago Park District, including 16 miles of downtown lakefront, effectively increasing public access to recycling products (similar to Fibrex recycling bins) by 125 percent. Chicago will also place dual purpose bins (like Fibrex Recycle/Trash Bins) that provide residents and visitors with a convenient and rewarding way to recycle their plastic bottles and aluminum cans while on-the-go.

According to Keep America Beautiful, only 12 percent of public spaces are equipped with recycling receptacles—indicating a clear need for greater public access to recycling bins. Chicago sets the example for improving on the paltry 12 percent national average for public access to recycling options.

"The Chicago Park District is committed to keeping more than 570 parks and 26 miles of lakefront green and healthy for all to enjoy throughout the year," said Mike Kelly, Chicago Park District Interim Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer. As cities across the nation become increasingly environmentally conscious, The Fibrex Group will continue to lead the way in delivering safe and affordable recycling solutions.

Johnson County Kansas Announces Its Green Business Award Recipients

Several Johnson County, Kansas businesses and four elementary schools will receive Johnson County's Green Business Award for success in waste reduction.

ITW Labels - They began with a facility that did no recycling and upgraded to a zero solid waste facility. By designing an innovative recycling program that includes 20 different waste streams ITW went from sending 30 tons each month to the landfill to zero within a nine month period.

Brookwood Elementary - Brookwood implemented a composting program for all food, paper napkin, paper plate, and milk carton waste with Missouri Organic, a local commercial composting company. This program reduced lunch waste from eight (8) bags each day to less than one (1) bag.

LaserCycle, Inc. - They implemented a program where trash cans were removed from individual cubicles and offices and placed them in central locations for collection. This provided greater awareness of sorting materials into recycling and residual trash.

Farmers Insurance HelpPoint - Farmers Insurance refurbished 368 desktop computers that were given back to the vendor and reinstituted to service elsewhere. Additionally, they sent 24 broken computer items to an EPA approved disposal service.

Briarwood Elementary - Briarwood performed a Recycling Rodeo for all their students. The Rodeo had each classroom collecting, measuring and graphing paper and mixed recycling daily for five weeks. Updates were placed in the Briarwood Brief to keep students and parents informed of their progress.

Tomahawk Elementary - Tomahawk has fully integrated their "Green" programs into
the school. They Changed their concept of conservation and environmental
education from just something the school "did" to truly being a part of their
everyday culture. The result has been greater participation in the
school's after school environmentally focused HiP team.

Cars are an indispensable fact of life for most of us. So, too, are abundant and clean supplies of drinking water. What we do with the used oil from our cars plays an important role in balancing our desire for convenient transportation with our desire for a clean and healthy environment today and for future generations.

We are all familiar with recycling newspapers, aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles, but you may not be aware of the efforts to promote used motor oil recycling: providing convenient collection sites for the purpose of keeping used motor oil out of our waterways and ground water supplies and getting used oil into the recycling system.

Motor oil has value even after it has been drained from an engine. The oil you take to a collection center to be recycled saves energy. It can be reprocessed and used in furnaces for heat or in power plants to generate electricity for homes, schools, and businesses. It can also be sent to a refinery that specializes in processing used oil and re-refined into lubricating base oils that can be used to formulate engine oils.

Used motor oil that is collected by "do-it-yourselfers" is critical to the used oil recycling system. Collecting used oil from the Do-It-Yourself oil changers is easy with the Profile Oil Containers. Conveniently located used oil drop-off sites equipped with attractive and user-friendly tanks are an essential element for any successful used oil program. The Profile Oil Container is specially designed to accept used oil from the public. This attractive unit is very user friendly which improves program participation and aids in keeping the collection site clean.

The Profile Oil Container combines the unique feature of a steel inner tank surrounded by a rust resistant fiberglass secondary containment. Other features include a large disposal funnel, rain resistant lockable lid, level gauge, instruction decals and a 2” service coupling for pumping out the used oil.

Survey Says People Who Dine in Restaurants Want Them to Recycle

Three out of five people prefer to eat at restaurants that have recycling practices in place, according to a study conducted by the National Restaurant Association.

The study found that roughly two-thirds of the nation's restaurants practice some level of recycling, but they would be more profitable if they implemented comprehensive programs.

Other highlights include:

85% of consumers say they sort recyclables in fast food restaurants if recycling containers are provided.

74% of restaurateurs who recycle do so in the kitchen and office areas, while 43% have a program in the dining room and other customer-facing areas.

72% of restaurant operators use products made from recycled materials, most commonly bags, paper products and food containers.

51% of consumers say they're willing to pay a little more at a restaurant that recycles.

13% of restaurants participate in composting programs

"Sustainability is more than a fad, it's the new way of doing business in the restaurant industry," says Hudson Riehle, Research and Knowledge Group for the National Restaurant Association. "Our research found that a majority of consumers prefer to patronize restaurants with recycling programs and recycling containers, and restaurants are following suit to ensure they meet their customers' expectations."

The National Restaurant Association surveyed 500 restaurant owners and operators nationwide during March and April, 2011.

The National Restaurant Association has signed on as a co-founding sponsor of the first sustainability conference exclusively focused on the restaurant and food service industry which was held this past weekend in Chicago.

Sustainability is a key industry imperative in the multi-year strategic plan, and the National Restaurant Association is committed to educating its members on how to increase recycling and environmental efforts.

The National Restaurant Association is providing tips, tools and resources for restaurant operators to continue to develop their environmental sustainability programs, including waste reduction and recycling.

The City of Raleigh makes it easy for residents living in apartments, condominiums and townhouses to participate in the Raleigh Recycling program. The program provides collection centers in convenient locations in multi-family communities. The Fibrex Profile 6 Compartment Recycling Container has been an integral part of increasing the recycling rate in Raleigh.

The Profile line of recycle containers are very attractive in appearance and easy to use. Made from quality fiberglass with a high gloss gelcoat finish, these containers need little maintenance and will perform beautifully year after year.

High participation in the Raleigh Recycling Program shows that residents care about their environment and are willing to do their part to help reduce the amount of solid waste put in the landfill. The management at each complex distributes city provided educational materials to their residents and are responsible for keeping the recycling containers and the collection area neat and clean between weekly collection visits.

Raleigh Recycling collects thirteen different materials for recycling which include:
• glass food and beverage containers
• food and beverage cans
• aluminum foil and trays
• plastic bottles
• plastic beverage rings
• milk, juice and laundry softener gable top cartons
• aseptic drink boxes
• newspaper and all inserts
• magazines and catalogs
• white paper, including junk mail
• paperboard, chipboard and paper tubes

“I think we truly have a success story with our program,” says Linda Leighton, the Waste Reduction Specialist for The City of Raleigh. “It’s been a long, long, long road with lots of bumps due to budget restraints. We are getting closer and closer to having recycling containers at all of our multi-family communities, despite the small funding and creative ideas we’ve had to deal with in the past. With the economy the way it is and the whole growth of ‘green’ everywhere you look, the property managers are beginning to get pressure from their residents to recycle in their communities. We have 480 multi-family communities participating to date (67%), and the participating units include 50,606 which is a 79% inclusion!”

If you are a property owner interested in recycle containers, Fibrex Group can help you determine the best, most efficient and most economical recycle bins for your multi-family property.
Kiawah Island has always been renowned as a naturally beautiful location. Filled with vegetation, flora and fauna, you could call it the archetypal "green" destination.

Since resort and real estate construction began on the island in the 1970's, all development has been carefully designed to blend into the island's natural habitat. In fact, before any commercial earth was turned, a complete inventory of the island's wildlife and plant life was undertaken.

This commitment to nature preservation led to many innovative developments, including the requirement that all buildings remain behind the secondary dune line to protect this critical habitat. There are also no streetlights on Kiawah, as the artificial light could attract Loggerhead Sea Turtles away from the beach on which they nest for six months of the year.

Long before "ecotourism" became a marketing term, the resort was giving guests the opportunity to donate $2 per night during their stay to the Kiawah Island Conservancy, which is dedicated to the preservation of the island.

Each of the five championship golf courses as well as the grounds of The Sanctuary have been certified by Audubon International as Cooperative Sanctuaries. This award-winning education and certification program recognizes golf courses and other facilities for their sensitivity to protecting the environment. To achieve the Audubon Sanctuary Certification, golf courses and The Sanctuary demonstrated a high degree of environmental quality in a variety of categories, including Environmental Planning, Wildlife Habitat Management, Resource Conservation, Waste Management and Outreach and Education.

And, as the world does become more eco-conscious, the resort continues to respond with new initiatives, including additional nature programming, water conservation and recycling. Even the oyster shells from the summer oyster roasts are redistributed into the salt marsh around the island.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort 2011 Sustainability Initiatives

Solid Waste Reduction

Participation from all departments in KIGR's waste minimization programs is mandatory to the best of their abilities and spatial limitations. KIGR constantly monitors and manages recycling and trash pick-ups for the most efficient use of resources to best serve our guests and the Lowcountry. The types of items collected for rescue, recycling and composting, in addition to points of collection, will continue to expand to reduce the volume of land-filled material.

Public Area Recycling

In addition to providing residential curbside recycling pick up, Kiawah Island Resort has placed the Fibrex Envirodesign Recycled Plastic Lumber recycling centers at high traffic areas throughout the resort. The recycling receptacles are located at the main pool, park and nature center. The receptacles are set up to collect trash and bottles & cans and have received rave reviews from residents and guests alike.

Community Relations

Just as the beloved Loggerhead Sea Turtles and Painted Buntings play integral roles within the coastal ecosystem, Kiawah lsland Golf Resort plays an integral part in the Charleston Community. By placing a concerted effort on repurposing usable items, conserving water and energy, and focusing on their local economy KIGR is fulfilling a beneficial niche.

Sustainable Food Initiative

"Sustainable" is food that is harvested in a manner that does not risk the health or future of the harvested population. While not compromising quality or guest satisfaction, efforts will be made to find local sources, organic products, and humane treatment of animals. Third party certifications will be sought out to verify these efforts where applicable.

Sustainable Product Availability

Increase the availability of more environmentally, socially and economically responsible products and services for guests, as well as employee use. Sustainability will be judged by the whole lifecycle of the product from extraction of raw materials, transportation, use and finally to proper disposal.

Harmful Materials Reduction

Achieve 100% recycling of all batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and e-waste. Emphasis will be placed on properly disposing paint and vehicle oil filters. Increase the availability of less harmful cleaning products, especially those chemicals that may be washed into our local wetland systems.

This innovative and environmentally friendly business was honored for its commitment to the environment.

Play Mart, Inc was one of four businesses recently presented with the Evergreen Award by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). The Evergreen Award Program was developed to annually recognize the efforts of partners who do business in an environmentally friendly way.

A total of 25 businesses were considered for the 2010 Evergreen Award. This Award was presented to a business in one of four categories. “These companies have done an outstanding job of making environmentally friendly options available to our federal customers and are committed to helping us reduce waste and save taxpayer dollars,” said Regional Administrator David H. Ehrenwerth. “We are honored to partner with companies that help us to green the government’s supply chain while creating a more sustainable environment and building a greener future.”

Play Mart, Inc., a manufacturer of recycled plastic commercial playground equipment, received the 2010 Evergreen Award in the Sports and Recreation category. A Woman-Owned / Family-Owned Small Business providing jobs in rural Kentucky, Play Mart manufactures 100% recycled plastic playground equipment and site amenities, diverting millions of jugs and bottles from landfills annually. Almost all of the company’s manufacturing waste, and more than 75% of the company’s operation waste, is recycled. The Take Back program ensures that the company’s products don’t go to landfills but are re-used and recycled. In 2010, Play Mart also eliminated its shop lighting and replaced it with an energy-efficient system of zoned and motion-detected fluorescent lighting. This change has provided an energy savings of nearly 7000 KWh per month which is equivalent to providing energy for 20 three bedroom houses annually.

The Evergreen Award itself “closes the recycling loop” in that it is made from recycled glass. The Award sets a high standard for other business partners to follow and is a wonderful example of how the federal government and businesses can work together. Play Mart is proud to be chosen by GSA as a partner that provide services and products that are environmentally sensitive and demonstrate its leadership in sustainability.

As the leading manufacturer of Recycled Plastic Play Systems, Play Mart celebrates 30 years of designing and manufacturing creative, age group specific play products (from 6 months to 12 years), fitness equipment, swings, site amenities, and ADA accessible components that meet and exceed current safety standards. Therefore, not only have new homes been built, but true communities have been established on these installations. One such example exists at Fort Polk, Louisiana. A company called Picerne was awarded a privatization contract for Fort Polk . They set out to create a community that would greatly enhance the quality of life for soldiers and their families. This emphasis started with a focus on building and refurbishing quality homes but went beyond a home, a street, or just one neighborhood. The company sought to bring about a sense of community at Fort Polk with play.

Upon reviewing the military installation, site managers discovered more than 150 play structures scattered throughout the neighborhoods there. The items ranged from tetherball posts to swing sets. Most of the items were outdated and in disrepair, which presented a safety concern. The company knew it could make an immediate impact on the quality of life for families by creating recreation destinations that offered something for everyone in the family, swings, age-appropriate play structures, basketball and tennis courts, picnic areas, and benches.

With a green outlook in mind for the improvements, they began to search for an environmentally conscious playground company to help carry out their plan. The company decided to enlist Play Mart, a playground manufacturer that extrudes its own proprietary Recycled Structural Plastic (RSP). This sustainable product is made primarily from recycled milk jugs. The company's average play set contains nearly 25,000 milk jugs, and it diverts over I million pounds of plastic from landfills annually.

Now, Play Mart has designed and installed environmentally friendly playgrounds at over a dozen neighborhoods in Fort Polk. The recreation area is a gathering spot for many residents, not just children. They bring a sense of community to the neighborhoods as families come together to watch their children play. Several parents meet for regular play dates at the parks, and family child care providers take the children on outings to the recreation areas.

Early projects at Fort Polk included the placement of 240 recycled plastic lumber benches at newly refurbished bus stops. These benches contain more than 300 post-consumer milk jugs. In addition to complete playground structures, high-quality, low maintenance recycled plastic lumber products have been used to create picnic tables and waste receptacles. All items consist of up to 100 percent recycled plastic lumber.

Ruben Leenders is the national account manager for Play Mart. The Fibrex Group is the exclusive Mid-Atlantic distributor for Play Mart Inc. We offer full service design & installation of sustainable play equipment, surfacing and borders. We also manufacture and distribute recycled plastic lumber benches, picnic tables, recycling containers and trash receptacles.

Picerne has revitalized other Military Housing installations using Play Mart playgrounds as well, such as Fort Riley, Fort Meade, Fort Rucker, Fort Bragg and Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

Did you know that in addition to our popular recycling containers, the Fibrex Group has an extensive collection of recycled plastic lumber site furnishings at competitive prices? Recently, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) decided to replace their old, weathered wood benches and trash cans.

Ms. Debbie Galvez, business manager at VIMS, discovered The Fibrex Group on the eVA purchasing portal/directory and decided to give us a call. She realized that due to their scenic, waterfront location that is subject to harsh elements, VIMS required a product that wouldn’t rot, crack, split, shrink, chip or require maintenance like similar wooden or metal products. VIMS decided on our stylish 6’ Envirodesign Victorian Bench which has the look of cast iron with the durability of recycled plastic. They also purchased various picnic tables including the Hexagon and ADA models to accommodate all of their employees and students, and the Envirodesign dome top waste receptacles. All of which never need painting or treating – and are immune to termites and insects, which is so important in a waterfront landscape!

VIMS’ order was promptly delivered by our staff (since we are in the same neck of the woods). All of their site furnishings fit in beautifully with the fresh Spring blooms and their breathtaking location on the river.

By purchasing products manufactured from recycled plastic content, VIMS saved 45,137 milk jugs from being disposed of in a landfill, thus solidifying their commitment to saving the environment and surrounding wetlands. They had indeed “closed the loop”.

The School of Marine Science (SMS) at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for the College of William & Mary. Chartered in 1940, VIMS is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States focusing on coastal and estuarine science. The VIMS 40-acre main campus is located in Gloucester Point, Virginia, near the mouth of the York River, a major tributary and passageway to Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The VIMS Gloucester Point campus lies about 13 miles east of the College of William and Mary along the Colonial Parkway. The close proximity to the river and ocean takes a heavy toll on outdoor benches, tables and trash receptacles.

In today’s environment, buying “GREEN” is more important than ever. The Fibrex Group fabricates 100% recycled plastic lumber made from post-consumer recycled plastic milk jugs. Our products are safe for both children and adults, as they do not splinter, absorb bacteria, or contain chemicals that may leach into the skin or soil like pressured treated wood.

Fibrex benches, picnic tables & site furnishings can be found in school play areas, commons areas, parks, sport & recreation facilities both indoors and outdoors. The uses of these products are limited by imagination only. They are perfect for use trail-side, dock-side, at nature centers, stadiums, and shopping/downtown areas– the potentials are endless!

Recycling Containers in Coppell Texas Parks

Funding for recycling containers was recently awarded for the “Play Green” project.

The grant funding allows the city to furnish additional permanent recycling containers for the parks, as well as purchase more portable recycling containers for the city’s special events as well as educational and promotional materials.

“The containers are primarily for water bottles, cans and that sort of thing,” said Cristal Rollins, community programs coordinator for Coppell. “Those are the things found most often out on the parks and trails. Park goers can now recycle more while they are using the parks, fields, facilities and trails with the new recycling containers in place.

The containers were provided by a Solid Waste Implementation Project grant from the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and Texas Commission on Environmental Equality (TCEQ).

Rollins wrote the grant for just under $15,000 and that money provided 17 new recycling containers in the parks and on the trails located in Coppell.

The recycling containers have been placed at Andy Brown East and West parks, the Kid Country playground and the trail system. Each recycling container is marked with “Coppell Recycles Bottles and Cans” signage and has a special opening at the top to minimize contamination. The recycling receptacles are placed next to trash cans in all locations, Rollins said.

“The recycling containers are in the parks and we are using some of the portable containers we purchased at some of the recent city events,” she said. “We also purchased some promotional items to give out to encourage people to recycle.”

Recycling in the parks was first initiated in 2006. The first recycling containers were placed at the soccer and baseball fields at Wagon Wheel and MacArthur parks through “Run, Refresh, Recycle.”

The “Run, Refresh, Recycle” project was also funded through a Solid Waste Implementation Project grant.

The “Play Green” project funds have given the city the opportunity to enhance the park recycling program, increase the diversion rate and create less waste that ends up in a landfill, and gives park users more chances to play green, Rollins said.
Colleges, schools, businesses and those hosting large events pay hefty fees for the collection, transportation and disposal of garbage and trash. Often, it contains more recyclable materials than actual garbage or trash. Beverage containers, food service containers and documents make up the majority of “the trash” that is transported to already full landfills.

Trash or waste audits can be performed that will provide a reasonable estimate of just how much trash volume and expense can be reduced when you strategically place recycling containers throughout a campus, school, business, or event. At schools and colleges, cafeterias and libraries are ideal locations for recycling containers.

School administrators in particular, may not fully understand the extent of their trash expense. In Seattle, Virginia Mason Hospital recently reduced their garbage expense by $170,000 a year after increasing the use of recycling containers. In addition, the amount of garbage they contributed to landfills was reduced by 80%. Certainly, colleges or large institutions could use that kind of savings.

The Fibrex Group has recycling containers designed for durability and easy cleaning which are also attractive. Recycling bins can have the college or school mascot on them, or they can be color-coordinated with the event or business logo. Our recycling containers are clearly labeled and are made from numerous materials, in many sizes and shapes, to fit nearly every need or decor.

By installing and promoting the use of recycling containers, colleges, schools, businesses and municipalities can significantly reduce their trash expenses and their carbon footprint. School board officials, community leaders and investors will see this as positive indicators of your success and innovative thinking. Additionally, the community will see your business or event as a responsible neighbor, rather than a disruption or intrusion. The successful use of recycling containers will improve your reputation and social performance and keep more cash in the bank.

That Half Empty Plastic Soda Bottle Can Contaminate the Entire Bin

This blog post centers upon the little known fact that partially filled plastic containers can ruin the recycling process. We discussed this subject with our kids the other day. Our youngest suggested we “put it in our new blog”. How can we argue with that?

We have a curbside recycle bin and recently discovered a three-quarters-full plastic soda bottle. You might be surprised how this seemingly benign circumstance can have a dramatic effect on the recycling process.

Consider these facts:

Machines that handle the sorting of the materials can become damaged, which means that precious time, energy and money will be needed to repair the machines.

Liquids and solids left in recyclable materials makes the job far more difficult and inefficient for workers sorting the material by hand.

Certain biodegradable materials actually inhibit the materials in the bin from turning into the highest quality materials possible

In extreme cases, foreign matter in the recycling containers can result in the entire bin content being sent directly to the landfill.

Now back to those kids. I know that they are much more concerned about “Mother Earth” than they are about wasting Mom and Dad’s hard-earned money. While I don’t expect to see any more half-full soda bottles in our recycle bin, I am a realist and know their concern for Mother Earth will not resolve their natural calling to open 12-ounce drinks to satisfy their two-ounce thirst. I suppose they will devise some creative (and comical) covert product disposal methods all in the name of protecting the environment.

Shopko discovered a recurring widespread dilemma within their customer base. Customers love the utility and convenience of plastic bags at check out, but they are also increasingly unhappy with the amount of plastic they send out with the trash. Fibrex solved the Shopko customer dilemma via the Shopko “Custom Recycling Box”.

Consider what this has done for Shopko and what it could do for your business. For an ever-increasing number of Shopko customers, the first thing they do is deposit the plastic bags of their previous purchase in the custom recycle box. This conscious act of returning bags to a recycling receptacle is a disciplined, productive act that delivers personal reward associated with the simple act of walking into Shopko. The consumer may or may not actively associate Shopko with the positive emotion, but the subconscious association is indisputable.

The Fibrex Group's Recycle Box is a low cost collection solution suitable for all types of recyclables: bottles & cans, plastics, paper, or anything else the proprietor wishes to collect. It is available in a 32 & 44-gallon capacity and is easily customized to perfectly blend into your business model. We are proud to inform that we manufacture all Recycle Boxes with a minimum of 30% recycled content.
