City of La Mesa Utilizes Fibrex RecyclePro Containers for Multi-Family Program

The City of La Mesa has been awarded a grant in the amount of $113,850 from CalRecycle (California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery) to improve recycling opportunities at multifamily properties. Through the grant funding, the City is providing the RecyclePro indoor/outdoor recycling containers to complexes to be used in common areas to help increase their recycling and decrease trash use. In-home recycling tote bags and can crushers are also being provided. Approximately half of the housing in La Mesa is multifamily.

While researching different recycling container options, the City determined that the RecyclePro was the best fit for durability, functionality, appearance and cost. The City is supplying 230 cans to dozens of properties for use in areas such as lobbies, pools, laundry rooms, community rooms, and mail box spaces. The cans will be used for recycling of cans and bottles, as well as paper and other common recyclables.

Distribution of the cans will begin next week and conclude by mid-March 2012. At the end of the grant in September, a final report will be submitted to CalRecycle including data on recycling rates at properties receiving the RecyclePro recycling containers versus other types of containers. Some properties are only getting in-home bags and/or can crushers and there is also a control group that’s not participating at all.

Solid Waste Recycling Programs Could Create Hundreds of New American Jobs

States and municipalities could create hundreds of new jobs by redoubling recycling efforts. On average, states recycle about 33% percent of municipal solid wastes, from soda cans to glass bottles.

The fifth-annual Green-Business Conference was held in Columbia, South Carolina. Business owners discussed their green business and sustainability efforts.

Recycling can mean increased jobs and saved revenues for states. In South Carolina alone, whose municipal solid waste recycling is only 22%, recycling has an estimated $6.5 billion impact on the state’s economy with 15,600 “identifiable jobs” and an impact on 38,000 total jobs – numbers that would rise with more recycling.

If every South Carolinian, business and residents, would increase recycling efforts, South Carolina could easily double the existing recycling workforce, creating hundreds of jobs throughout the state.

As in many cities in the West, Midwest and Northeast, recycling in Columbia, South Carolina is voluntary rather than mandatory, and the state’s more rural areas lack recycling programs altogether.

However, along with developing municipal recycling programs, states should also develop ways to attract and grow sustainable businesses such as incentives, tax reform, infrastructure maintenance and educational funding.

How to Start a Recycling Program in your Office

As much as 90% of office waste in the average workplace can be recycled. Here's how to get started.

Companies everywhere are ramping up efforts to recycle, but sustainability starts with your employees. They're the ones printing the sheets of paper and using the soda cans that often easily end up in the trash can.

In the average workplace, about 80% to 90% of solid waste is actually recyclable, according to the EPA.

Establishing an office recycling program won't just reduce your carbon footprint, but it could also save your business money. Here's how to get started.

The first step to setting up an effective recycling program is to figure out exactly what's going into the trash. Then, you can figure out which products are recyclable and which ones you want to include in your workplace recycling initiative. Do this is by reaching out to whoever collects your recycling, whether it's your municipal waste management program or your building management, and ask them exactly what they recycle and what they don't.

But start small. Don’t overwhelm emplooyees by offering them 20 different items that they can put into recycling containers.

Paper products are a typical place to start. In U.S. workplaces, one to two pounds of paper product waste is generated on average each day.

Beverage containers, too, are a no-brainer; most workers go through as many as 3 a day.

Recycling Bins, separate for paper and for soda cans and other beverage containers, should be conveniently located. If employees are allowed to have soda at their desk, recycling containers should not only be located in the break room.

Whatever you decide to recycle, you'll need to appoint a coordinator to oversee and organize the program. This person should ideally be someone who is enthusiastic about sustainability and willing to help plan and see the entire recycling initiative through.

Chicago Recycling Initiative Increases Access to Recycling Bins in Chicago Parks by 125%

The Chicago Park District approved an initiative to promote 2,500 recycling bins throughout the Chicago Park District, including 16 miles of downtown lakefront, effectively increasing public access to recycling products (similar to Fibrex recycling bins) by 125 percent. Chicago will also place dual purpose bins (like Fibrex Recycle/Trash Bins) that provide residents and visitors with a convenient and rewarding way to recycle their plastic bottles and aluminum cans while on-the-go.

According to Keep America Beautiful, only 12 percent of public spaces are equipped with recycling receptacles—indicating a clear need for greater public access to recycling bins. Chicago sets the example for improving on the paltry 12 percent national average for public access to recycling options.

Johnson County Kansas Announces Its Green Business Award Recipients

Several Johnson County, Kansas businesses and four elementary schools will receive Johnson County's Green Business Award for success in waste reduction.

To recognize new, as well as ongoing efforts of businesses to "go green," the Johnson County Solid Waste Management Committee has selected 10 recipients of its annual Green Business Award.

The 10 recipients diverted a combined total of 1,227 tons of waste from landfills to recycling and composting. Awardees include manufacturers, schools and a hospital. The 2011 recipients of the top Emerald Award are:

ITW Dymon, Olathe
ITW Labels, Gardner

ITW Labels - They began with a facility that did no recycling and upgraded to a zero solid waste facility. By designing an innovative recycling program that includes 20 different waste streams ITW went from sending 30 tons each month to the landfill to zero within a nine month period.
Brookwood Elementary - Brookwood implemented a composting program for all food, paper napkin, paper plate, and milk carton waste with Missouri Organic, a local commercial composting company. This program reduced lunch waste from eight (8) bags each day to less than one (1) bag.
LaserCycle, Inc. - They implemented a program where trash cans were removed from individual cubicles and offices and placed them in central locations for collection. This provided greater awareness of sorting materials into recycling and residual trash.
Farmers Insurance HelpPoint - Farmers Insurance refurbished 368 desktop computers that were given back to the vendor and reinstituted to service elsewhere. Additionally, they sent 24 broken computer items to an EPA approved disposal service.
Briarwood Elementary - Briarwood performed a Recycling Rodeo for all their students. The Rodeo had each classroom collecting, measuring and graphing paper and mixed recycling daily for five weeks. Updates were placed in the Briarwood Brief to keep students and parents informed of their progress.
Tomahawk Elementary - Tomahawk has fully integrated their "Green" programs into the school. They Changed their concept of conservation and environmental education from just something the school "did" to truly being a part of their everyday culture. The result has been greater participation in the school's after school environmentally focused HiP team.

Survey Says People Who Dine in Restaurants Want Them to Recycle

Three out of five people prefer to eat at restaurants that have recycling practices in place, according to a study conducted by the National Restaurant Association.

The study found that roughly two-thirds of the nation's restaurants practice some level of recycling, but they would be more profitable if they implemented comprehensive programs.

Other highlights include:

85% of consumers say they sort recyclables in fast food restaurants if recycling containers are provided.
74% of restaurateurs who recycle do so in the kitchen and office areas, while 43% have a program in the dining room and other customer-facing areas.
72% of restaurant operators use products made from recycled materials, most commonly bags, paper products and food containers.
51% of consumers say they're willing to pay a little more at a restaurant that recycles.
13% of restaurants participate in composting programs

"Sustainability is more than a fad, it's the new way of doing business in the restaurant industry," says Hudson Riehle, Research and Knowledge Group for the National Restaurant Association. "Our research found that a majority of consumers prefer to patronize restaurants with recycling programs and recycling containers, and restaurants are following suit to ensure they meet their customers' expectations."

The National Restaurant Association surveyed 500 restaurant owners and operators nationwide during March and April, 2011.

The National Restaurant Association has signed on as a co-founding sponsor of the first sustainability conference exclusively focused on the restaurant and food service industry which was held this past weekend in Chicago.

Sustainability is a key industry imperative in the multi-year strategic plan, and the National Restaurant Association is committed to educating its members on how to increase recycling and environmental efforts.

The National Restaurant Association is providing tips, tools and resources for restaurant operators to continue to develop their environmental sustainability programs, including waste reduction and recycling.

Kiawah Island Goes Green

Kiawah Island has always been renowned as a naturally beautiful location. Filled with vegetation, flora and fauna, you could call it the archetypal "green" destination.

Since resort and real estate construction began on the island in the 1970's, all development has been carefully designed to blend into the island's natural habitat. In fact, before any commercial earth was turned, a complete inventory of the island's wildlife and plant life was undertaken.

Playground Equipment Made From Recycled Milk Jugs Gives Fort Polk Louisiana A Boost

At many military installations around the United States there has been an initiative to improve the quality of life as well as moral. Therefore, not only have new homes been built, but true communities have been established on these installations. One such example exists at Fort Polk, Louisiana. A company called Picerne was awarded a privatization contract for Fort Polk . They set out to create a community that would greatly enhance the quality of life for soldiers and their families. This emphasis started with a focus on building and refurbishing quality homes but went beyond a home, a street, or just one neighborhood. The company sought to bring about a sense of community at Fort Polk with play.

Upon reviewing the military installation, site managers discovered more than 150 play structures scattered throughout the neighborhoods there. The items ranged from tetherball posts to swing sets. Most of the items were outdated and in disrepair, which presented a safety concern. The company knew it could make an immediate impact on the quality of life for families by creating recreation destinations that offered something for everyone in the family, swings, age-appropriate play structures, basketball and tennis courts, picnic areas, and benches.

With a green outlook in mind for the improvements, they began to search for an environmentally conscious playground company to help carry out their plan. Fibrex Recycled Site Furnishings Beautify the Virginia Institute of Marine Science

Did you know that in addition to our popular recycling containers, the Fibrex Group has an extensive collection of recycled plastic lumber site furnishings at competitive prices? Recently, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) decided to replace their old, weathered wood benches and trash cans.

Ms. Debbie Galvez, business manager at VIMS, discovered The Fibrex Group on the eVA purchasing portal/directory and decided to give us a call. Recycling Containers in Coppell Texas Parks

Funding for recycling containers was recently awarded for the “Play Green” project.

The grant funding allows the city to furnish additional permanent recycling containers for the parks, as well as purchase more portable recycling containers for the city’s special events as well as educational and promotional materials.

“The containers are primarily for water bottles, cans and that sort of thing,” said Cristal Rollins, community programs coordinator for Coppell. “Those are the things found most often out on the parks and trails. Park goers can now recycle more while they are using the parks, fields, facilities and trails with the new recycling containers in place.

The containers were provided by a Solid Waste Implementation Project grant from the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and Texas Commission on Environmental Equality (TCEQ).

Rollins wrote the grant for just under $15,000 and that money provided 17 new recycling containers in the parks and on the trails located in Coppell.

The recycling containers have been placed at Andy Brown East and West parks, the Kid Country playground and the trail system. Each recycling container is marked with “Coppell Recycles Bottles and Cans” signage and has a special opening at the top to minimize contamination. The recycling receptacles are placed next to trash cans in all locations, Rollins said.

“The recycling containers are in the parks and we are using some of the portable containers we purchased at some of the recent city events,” she said. “We also purchased some promotional items to give out to encourage people to recycle.”

Recycling in the parks was first initiated in 2006. The first recycling containers were placed at the soccer and baseball fields at Wagon Wheel and MacArthur parks through “Run, Refresh, Recycle.”

The “Run, Refresh, Recycle” project was also funded through a Solid Waste Implementation Project grant.

The “Play Green” project funds have given the city the opportunity to enhance the park recycling program, increase the diversion rate and create less waste that ends up in a landfill, and gives park users more chances to play green, Rollins said.

Recycling Containers Can Cut Your Bill for Trash Removal

That Half Empty Plastic Soda Bottle Can Contaminate the Entire Bin

This blog post centers upon the little known fact that partially filled plastic containers can ruin the recycling process. We discussed this subject with our kids the other day. Our youngest suggested we “put it in our new blog”. How can we argue with that?

We have a curbside recycle bin and recently discovered a three-quarters-full plastic soda bottle. You might be surprised how this seemingly benign circumstance can have a dramatic effect on the recycling process.

Consider these facts:

Machines that handle the sorting of the materials can become damaged, which means that precious time, energy and money will be needed to repair the machines.

Liquids and solids left in recyclable materials makes the job far more difficult and inefficient for workers sorting the material by hand.

Certain biodegradable materials actually inhibit the materials in the bin from turning into the highest quality materials possible

In extreme cases, foreign matter in the recycling containers can result in the entire bin content being sent directly to the landfill.

Now back to those kids. I know that they are much more concerned about “Mother Earth” than they are about wasting Mom and Dad’s hard-earned money. While I don’t expect to see any more half-full soda bottles in our recycle bin, I am a realist and know their concern for Mother Earth will not resolve their natural calling to open 12-ounce drinks to satisfy their two-ounce thirst. I suppose they will devise some creative (and comical) covert product disposal methods all in the name of protecting the environment.
