Floods and flood-related disasters are a fact of life for residents of Pennsylvania. In fact, flooding is the Keystone State’s most frequent natural disaster. Some floods start slow while others happen in a flash. It can occur because of a long period of rain or when small streams and rivers overflow.

According to the non-profit research group First Street Foundation, 9.1% of properties in the Quaker State are at major risk from flooding over the next 30 years. What’s more, there’s a 26% chance for a 1-in-100-year flood event to occur at least once over the life of a 30-year mortgage.

A mix of several factors contributes to the state’s vulnerability to flooding. Below are the reasons why floods happen in Pennsylvania.

An Immense Network of Waterways

Did you know that Pennsylvania has 86,000 miles of waterways? It is second only to Alaska’s 365,000 miles of rivers.

“It’s hard to walk around Pennsylvania without tripping over a stream,” observes Penn State extension water resources program team leader Jennifer Fetter.

This means that the state offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, boating, and other water-related activities. But, it also means that more localities are prone to flooding when these waterways overflow.

In fact, many regions in the Commonwealth have a high flood risk. Neighborhoods situated in the following areas are especially vulnerable:

Along the Susquehanna River in Central Pennsylvania, which is considered to be among the most flood-prone areas in the country,

Along the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Youghiogheny Rivers in Southwest Pennsylvania,

Along the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers in the East, and

Surrounding parts of the Darby, Perkiomen, Brandywine, and Neshaminy creeks, among others.

In addition, lower elevations, even those far from rivers and streams, are also at risk.

How These Waterways Contribute to Flooding

Three major rivers run through the state, Susquehanna, Delaware, and Ohio, and they come with countless smaller streams and tributaries. While these major rivers might have flood control systems, it is the smaller but faster streams and creeks feeding into them that bear the brunt of the initial and most rapid flooding.

Excessive rainfall or snowmelt can also result in the overflow of creeks, streams, and rivers. This is exacerbated by mountainous, steep, or hilly terrain, which can produce rapid runoff that quickly overwhelms the drainage capacity of local waterways.

What’s worse, bridges, culverts, infrastructure, and other man-made alterations on any part of this network can worsen flooding in specific areas, as they can restrict water flow and result in blockages.

High Tide

In Philadelphia, flooding can occur even on sunny days. This is known as sunny day flooding, high tide flooding, or tidal flooding, which occurs when water levels in coastal or tidal waterways rise due to high tides.

If you’re wondering what high tide has to do with Philadelphia, which is located around 60 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean, here’s the answer: The city is bordered by two tidal rivers, whose water levels and currents are influenced by ocean tides channeled through the Delaware Bay. To the east is the Delaware River, while to the west is the Schuylkill River.

Excessive Rainfall

Heavy or intense precipitation, either over a short or prolonged period (e.g., over several days), can cause flooding, not just in coastal areas but also further inland as the storm moves on shore. In Pennsylvania, excessive rainfall will usually result in floods.

Extreme precipitation is typically caused by slow moving thunderstorms and tropical cyclones (otherwise known as hurricanes, typhoons, or tropical storms). Pennsylvania isn’t located along the Atlantic Ocean, so it is not directly hit by hurricanes or tropical storms and their remnants. However, the indirect effects of these natural phenomena can be significant.

In particular, water from heavy rainfall brought about by tropical cyclones can result in river flooding, flash flooding, and inundation of low-lying areas. For instance, when Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee hit the country in late August and early September 2011, respectively, they brought more than 20 inches of rainfall, or half a year’s normal precipitation, across portions of eastern Pennsylvania over the span of about 10 days. This isn’t surprising given the fact that strong winds and heavy rain from these natural disasters can extend over 100 miles from the eye of the storm and cause damage.

Dam or Levee Breaks

There are several hundred dams and nearly 200 miles of levees in the Keystone State. The goal of this infrastructure is to protect communities from the threat of floods. However, this flood control system isn’t perfect and can break or fail with little to no warning. When this happens, a sudden surge of water flows downstream, bringing destruction in its wake.

For instance, in 1889, the South Fork Dam broke and caused the now famous Johnstown Flood. Another example is the Austin Dam collapse in 1911. In both occurrences, heavy rains was a primary or contributory factor to the resulting flood.

Snow Melt & Ice Jams

With winter comes snow and with spring comes snowmelt, which results when snow melts into water. Snowpacks melt when the season begins to warm and releases water into rivers and other waterways. So, snowmelt runoff is a natural part of the water cycle.

However, too much of this runoff, too soon can be problematic. This is exemplified by the case of heavy snowfall followed by a sudden thaw and heavy rain in January 1996, which resulted in floods along rivers from New York through Pennsylvania to Virginia. It also resulted in ice jams, or the buildup of ice on waterways, which exacerbated both the flooding and the resulting damages.

Climate Change

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), climate change has resulted in an increase (or warming) in Pennsylvania’s temperature by more than half a degree (F) in the last century, more frequent heavy rainstorms, and a rise of around 1 inch in the tidal portion of the Delaware River every eight years. But, this is just the beginning.

In the coming decades, climate change is expected to harm ecosystems, disrupt farming, increase some risks to human health, and increase flooding. For instance, heavier storms and extraordinarily high river flows are expected to worsen flooding along the Susquehanna River and its smaller tributaries.

If you own an insurance policy and have to make a claim, you could do it on your own, or get help from a professional who knows exactly what they’re doing. Enter a public adjuster.

A public adjuster is an independent insurance professional who works for you, the policyholder, in processing your insurance claim. With their help, you can be assured that the insurance company is not short selling you but that you’ll get what you deserve to the last penny.

So, they don’t work for insurance companies but rather against them in the pursuit of your claim or interest. This clashes with the profit-driven interest of insurance companies and as a result, insurance companies just don’t like public adjusters and will often discourage policyholders from working with one.

Insurance Companies Want to Avoid Legal Battles

A common strategy among insurance companies is pretending to want to go to court when a dispute arises between them and the policyholder. Their goal is to push you to become afraid of the intricacies and expense of a legal battle, so much so that you would rather just take the money they’re offering and be done with it.

But, no one really wants to face suits, if they can help it. Insurance companies feel the same way. They don’t want to go to court over your cases as well. That is why, they will do their best to settle an amount with you during negotiations.

However, because most policyholders aren’t experts in insurance policies, they may settle for an amount that they think is good enough. But, when you work with a public adjuster, they come with their knowledge and experience and provide you an estimation of the true value of your loss. Among the first things they will do is double-check the assessment of the insurance company, and if they find a discrepancy, they will ask for a higher settlement amount.

If insurance companies stay adamant on the lower settlement amount and you want to take the case to court, your public adjuster would have already helped you build a strong case and may work with an insurance dispute attorney who can represent you in court.

Rise in Costs, Reduction in Profit Margins

When insurance companies see public adjusters, they will instantly think of the additional costs and decrease in profits that come with them. Why? Well, it’s because of this one thing: The claim settlement amount will definitely increase.

One reason for this is that public adjusters work on a contingency fee basis. This means that they get a cut or percentage of the claim settlement, so they have an incentive to drive up the amount to the max of what the policyholder is due.

Increased Likelihood of More Accurate Claims

One of the tasks of a public adjuster is to conduct an assessment of property damage. The results of their assessment often contradict those of the insurance company’s internal adjusters, which can lead to increased scrutiny of the latter.

Public adjusters are also known to submit thorough and accurate documentation in support of the policyholder’s claims. Backed with their knowledge and understanding of the intricacies of insurance policies and the claims process, they are sure to submit more comprehensive claims.

All of this bumps up the settlement amount.

Extended Claim Processing Time

Businesses always want their employees to do their jobs as quickly as possible so that they can do more and bring in more profit for the company. Insurance companies are also like this. With many policyholders handing in their claims, especially after disasters, for instance, insurance providers prefer to complete the claims process quickly and efficiently, not only to minimize their workload but also to reduce costs.

However, when a public adjuster is involved, insurance companies can expect the claims process to be delayed. Public adjusters are famous for being meticulous in their assessment or review and documentation of property damage. Being thorough and accurate takes time.

Power Shift During Negotiations

They say knowledge is power, and this couldn’t be truer when negotiating for insurance claims settlement. Just imagine a policyholder who is not as familiar with the terms of the insurance policy as the internal adjusters of the insurance provider. In this scenario, who do you think has the upper hand? It’s obvious that the more knowledgeable party will win in a negotiation.

Now, imagine a different scene. This time, instead of the policyholder, it’s a public adjuster who negotiates for them with the insurance company. (Note that public adjusters are known for their negotiating prowess.) Now, wouldn’t you say that the playing field is more even?

The bottom line is insurance companies don’t like public adjusters because when it comes to negotiating for the settlement, they tend to shift the power dynamics. Now, the negotiation isn’t one-sided; they lose control of the conversation. They can bet that their lowball offer won’t be accepted and that they’ll have to compromise on a fairer amount.

Choosing a Public Adjuster

If you’re considering working with a public adjuster, here are some of the key qualities you should look for to hire a good fit.

Credentials

Most states require public adjusters to operate with a license. You can easily verify if the public adjuster you’re talking to is licensed or legit by searching for their profile in the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters website.

Relevant Claims Experience

There are various types of insurance coverage, property, and damage. Make sure that the public adjuster has the relevant knowledge, experience, and track record of dealing with the type of case you’re facing. If not, they might miss significant details that could impact your reimbursement.

Reputation

You should also check if the public adjuster has a good reputation. Are they reliable? Can you trust them with your case?

Honest & Clear Communication

Choose a public adjuster who communicates with you clearly and openly. They should be transparent about the process, their fees, and what to expect.

Testimonials

Check the experiences and feedback of policyholders who have previously worked with them. You can search for reviews online or ask someone they’ve worked with in the past. You can glean insights into their success rate and client satisfaction from these testimonials.

Living in Southeast Michigan for my entire life, I have had the privilege of being in close proximity to the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan (USA) and Windsor, Ontario (Canada). Traveling and camping often with my mom and grandparents, I have also been across the Blue Water Bridge at the Port Huron–Sarnia Border Crossing, which connects the cities of Port Huron, Michigan (USA) and Sarnia, Ontario (Canada) across the St. Clair River.

My grandparents also loved to travel to Niagara Falls, which we visited on both sides of the Falls, the United States side in Buffalo, New York, and the Canadian side in Niagara, Ontario. The border crossings near the Falls are called The Peace Bridge, which connects Buffalo to Fort Erie, and the Rainbow Bridge connects Niagara Falls, New York, to Niagara Falls, Ontario.

There are many more border crossings between the USA and Canada, and even more that I have not been privy to cross, as they are on the Western coasts of both countries, such as those that claim the Vancouver territories near Seattle, Washington.
Although Michigan does not have as many crossings as do other states, for example, on the West Coast, the Ambassador Bridge that connects Detroit and Windsor is the busiest USA and Canadian border crossing, handling around 8,000 trucks and 68,000 travelers daily!

Top 10 busiest US Canada border crossing

We have mentioned over seventy-eight USA-Canada border crossings, noting that the Ambassador Bridge, connecting Detroit and Windsor, is the busiest border crossing. Now let’s take a look at and see what the experts say about which of these are the top ten busiest border crossings.

The United States Department of Transportation reports that these are the top ten busiest border crossings:

Rank

U.S. Customs port/crossing

Passengers in personal vehicles per day

Personal vehicles per day

Daily port share of personal vehicles crossing U.S.-Canada border (percent)

1

Detroit, MI

59,518

22,905

22.6

2

Buffalo-Niagara,NY

45,269

20,980

20.7

3

Blaine, WA

22,560

  9,129

  9.0

4

Port Huron, MI

18,810

  6,390

  6.3

5

Calais, ME

  8,525

  3,875

  3.8

6

Sault Ste. Marie,MI

10,634

  3,498

  3.5

7

Massena,NY

  8,340

  2,987

  3.0

8

Champlain-Rouse Pt.,NY

  7,526

  2,685

  2.7

9

Sumas,WA

  5,583

  2,243

  2.2

10

Derby Line, VT

  4,144

  2,190

  2.2

Total, top 10 ports

190,909

76,883

76.0

Total, all U.S.-Canada border crossings

246,704

101,137

100.0

What is the best time to cross the border in Canada?

Having an understanding of which border crossings are the busiest, we now want to know when the best time is to cross, with the least amount of wait time. TripAdvisor suggests that, “Any time midweek is usually better than travelling on a weekend. Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings are always going to be the busiest. Long weekends and holidays on either side of the border also impact the length of the line, as do sporting events (ie Toronto Blue Jays playing the Mariners in Seattle, etc.),”.

When crossing the Ambassador Bridge in my hometown, the best time is usually in the late evening, between midnight and 3 am. However, that’s when people are coming home from the bars, specifically the USA nineteen-year-old residents who are officially of legal drinking age in Canada! Otherwise, early morning is between 5 am and 6 am, before rush hour starts around 7 am and goes until 9 am.

Of course, weekends and holiday weekends are extremely busy, especially during the Fourth of July holiday when we share one of the largest fireworks displays called the International Freedom Festival (now called the Ford Fireworks).

People of all cultures and backgrounds peacefully line up along the Detroit River on both the Detroit side as well as the Windsor side to watch the shared fireworks over the river to celebrate our independence as free nations and friendly neighbors.

Busiest US Canada border crossing

In conclusion, while many crossings connect the USA and Canada, the Ambassador Bridge stands out as the busiest, underscoring its vital role in North American travel and trade.

After years of working in the food service industry in Michigan, fires in restaurants, were common in my experience. I have worked in many types of restaurants, from five-star chef run to small mom-and-pop burgers and beer joints, as well as everything else in between. Rarely did I prefer to work at corporate-run or chain restaurants, as I found that I made more money in tips at privately owned restaurants.

For example, as listed below, I have worked at these restaurants in various roles, including the following, such as but not limited to:

Poole’s Tavern – head server and bartender

The Moose Preserve – server

Ernesto’s Italian Restaurant and Trattoria – server

Steve and Rocky’s – bartender

Duggan’s Irish Pub – server

Steak and Ale – server

House of Woo – server and bartender

Big Boy’s Restaurant – cook

Roman Forum – salad and dessert girl

Tavern on the Main – bartender

Outback Steakhouse – server

Max and Erma’s – server

Lake Point Yacht Club – server

Ponderosa Steakhouse – server (first job as a semi-waitress)

Little Ceasar’s Pizzeria – cook and customer service

Finger’s Saloon – server

Rosevelt’s Restaurant – server

Riffle’s Restaurant -server

Chicago Roadhouse – server

After working at these establishments, I only witnessed a handful of fires, and they were in the kitchen or, as restaurant people call it, the “back of the house.”

According to data collected by the U.S. Fire Administration, “No matter the type, however, each restaurant poses unique fire risks as it engages in cooking activities and large numbers of customers potentially gather at one time.

Restaurant fires accounted for about 6% of all nonresidential building fires reported to fire departments each year. These fires resulted in an average of less than one fatality per 1,000 fires, 11 injuries per 1,000 fires, and $23,000 in loss per fire,”.

Fires involving combustible cooking oils and fats are classified as what class of fire?

Since most of the fires I witnessed were in the kitchen/back of the house, some type of combustible cooking oil generally caused them which took place in the deep fryers by an inexperienced cook, never a chef. When it was by a chef, it was usually because they were working so fast with too many pans going at once.

The National Fire Protection Agency reports that, “NFPA statistics show that for eating and drinking establishments, the majority of fires occur in the kitchen and specifically involve cooking equipment. Fire extinguishers that are rated for Class K fires (those involving animal fats or cooking oils) are the only type of extinguisher that can be used on fires involving animal fats or cooking oils. This is because many other types of extinguishers will either be ineffective or could even make this type of fire worse,”.

Class K fires are particularly challenging in the restaurant industry due to their unique characteristics. Unlike other fire types, Class K fires are fueled by highly flammable cooking oils, grease, and fats. When these substances reach high temperatures, they can ignite and burn rapidly, creating intense flames and thick smoke.

Because of their chemical makeup, these fires require specific extinguishing agents found in Class K fire extinguishers, which work by forming a protective barrier and cooling the affected area to prevent re-ignition.

Restaurants with high-volume cooking, such as those that utilize deep fryers, are especially at risk. Implementing stringent safety measures is essential. Regular cleaning of kitchen equipment to prevent grease buildup, proper staff training on fire prevention and extinguisher use, and routine maintenance of fire suppression systems are key strategies. The goal is not just to extinguish fires but to proactively minimize the likelihood of their occurrence, protecting both staff and patrons.

How to put out grease fire

Putting out a grease fire has quite a different process and procedure than other types of fires. Firstly, putting water on a grease fire is absolutely the last thing to do, as the water will just disperse the grease and spread the fire immensely, ultimately making it even harder to control or extinguish.

As mentioned earlier in this article, using a Class K extinguisher is the best line of defense with a grease fire. However, if you do not have one, Lincoln County’s official government site out of North Carolina suggests the following recourse for putting out a grease fire, “If the worst happens and your oil does catch on fire, do the following:

Turn the Heat Off – Don’t try to move the pot. You might accidentally splash yourself or your kitchen with burning oil. And that would be bad.

Cover the Pot with a Metal Lid – Fire cannot exist in the absence of oxygen. With the lid on (and the heat off), the fire should quickly consume all the oxygen and put itself out. Use a metal lid since glass will shatter.

Pour on Baking Soda – Baking soda will extinguish grease fires, but only if they’re small. It takes a lot of baking soda to do the job.

Spray the Pot with a Class B Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher – This is your last resort, as fire extinguishers will contaminate your kitchen. Still, it’s better than the alternative if the fire is getting out of control.

Get Out and Call 911 – If the fire does break out of control, don’t try to be a hero. Get out and find a phone to call 911,”.

Furthermore, many local fire codes now require commercial kitchens to have automatic fire suppression systems installed directly above cooking equipment. These systems activate when excessive heat or flame is detected, releasing a special extinguishing agent designed for grease fires.

Additionally, some restaurants also undergo unannounced fire safety inspections to ensure compliance and identify risks before they lead to incidents. In busy establishments, assigning a designated “safety lead” per shift can also help maintain awareness and readiness in high-pressure environments. Prevention and preparedness go hand-in-hand when it comes to keeping kitchens safe.

Are fires common in restaurants

In conclusion, while restaurant fires are not everyday occurrences, they are a real risk in fast-paced kitchens. Proper training, regular equipment maintenance, and awareness of fire safety protocols are essential to protect staff, customers, and the business itself.

With all of the wildfires and destruction happening in California, one might wonder if Canada, specifically commercial British Colombia industries, will end up exporting more goods to the United States (U.S.) – especially since California lost so much in this last natural disaster event.

Even though the immense fires have not broken out further south near San Diego County, the abnormally strong winds are still wreaking havoc on farms with persistent smoke, facing the possibility of devastating damage to their crops.

According to Trade and Invest British Colombia:

“Varied agricultural production

B.C. farms grow high-quality products, including dairy, cattle, poultry, tree fruits, vegetables, berries, grapes, mushrooms, bulbs, ornamental flowers, and shrubs.

Value from the sea

A booming seafood industry fuels steady growth and substantial trade and investment opportunities from the coastal waters and shores.

Commercial fisheries and aquaculture

B.C. is known worldwide for its salmon. Other seafood products include groundfish, shellfish, geoducks, and herring.

Alcoholic beverages

B.C. has long been recognized for its award-winning wines. More recently, the province is attracting international interest in craft-brewed ciders, beers, and spirits,”.

Furthermore, British Colombia Government News cites the following, “Quick Facts:

54% of BC exports in 2023 were sent to the United States;

Wood, pulp and paper, metallic mineral and energy products combined make up approximately 67% of total goods exports.

The top five states for B.C.’s exports were: Washington ($9.8 billion), California ($3.2 billion), Illinois ($2.1 billion), Texas ($1.5 billion), Oregon ($1.3 billion),”.

What is the quality of life in BC?

Being a Michigander, I happen to know a lot about the Windsor, Ontario, side of Canada, but I do not know much about life in BC, Canada. In the Southeast Detroit side of Michigan, when young people turn nineteen, it is almost a right of passage for us to cross the border at the Ambassador Bridge and drink legally in Windsor.

When I turned nineteen, we did not have micro or craft beers yet, so going to Windsor to drink meant we got to drink beer with more alcohol content—specifically, Brador, which is a brand of malt liquor beer that was my personal favorite.

Back to life in BC…

From Learn Live BC, they note that, “The standard of living is high in B.C. and Canada. The United Nations Human Development Index consistently ranks Canada as one of the world’s best countries to live in. The people of B.C., like the rest of Canada, are friendly and welcoming. People from many cultures call B.C. their home, creating a diverse and vibrant society that welcomes international students,”.

British Columbia, with its rich natural resources and vibrant cultural scene, is indeed poised for increased trade opportunities. In addition to the products already mentioned, B.C. also boasts a growing technology sector. The province is a hub for tech startups and boasts an intense video game development industry, with companies like EA and Capcom having significant operations in the region. This particular sector not only contributes to the economy but also attracts talent from across the globe, further enhancing its export potential through software and digital solutions.

Moreover, the forestry industry is transforming. While historically rooted in traditional timber and logging, there’s a shift towards sustainable practices and innovations like engineered wood products, which are in high demand worldwide. The emphasis on sustainable forestry not only aligns with global ecological goals but also strengthens B.C.’s position in international markets looking for eco-friendly building materials.

In terms of infrastructure, British Columbia benefits from modern transportation systems and strategic ports like Vancouver, which facilitate efficient trade routes to the Pacific and beyond. The province’s commitment to upgrading its infrastructure ensures that it can handle increases in export volume, which is crucial for maintaining competitive edges in global trade.

Lastly, B.C.’s education system and research institutions foster innovation and contribute to an educated workforce. Initiatives aimed at enhancing collaboration between industries and academic institutions seek to drive further advancements in technology, health care, and environmental sciences, sectors expected to play significant roles in future exports.

Okay, let’s go back to talking for a minute about my side of Canada near my home in Michigan.

What country is due south of Detroit?

We are so close to Windsor in Canada that we share one of the largest fireworks displays called the International Freedom Festival, where we line up along the Detroit River on both the Detroit side and the Windsor side to watch the fireworks over the river. In fact, we are so close there is a riddle that goes like this: What country is due south of Detroit? Go ahead, take a good guess. If you guessed Canada, you’re right!

Wikipedia notes that, “The Detroit-Windsor International Freedom Festival was the former name of the fireworks display that took place over the Detroit River as part of a multi-day celebration in late June and early July. The festival began in 1959 and was jointly celebrated by Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. In 2007, the festival was split into two separate events: Detroit River Days and Windsor Summer Fest.

For most of its existence it was sponsored by Hudson’s. Its corporate successor Target took over as sponsor until 2013, when the Ford Motor Company became the primary sponsor, with the event re-branded as the Ford Fireworks presented by Target. The show is broadcast on TV by NBC affiliate WDIV-TV Local 4, while WJR airs an audio simulcast of its music.[4] On the Windsor side, there is a midway consisting of carnival rides and concessions during the festival. The Midway operates as a stand-alone attraction at the end of June and beginning of July. It’s also sponsored by Zehrs, providing free transportation for people to get to the fireworks via Transit Windsor. The Ford Fireworks is produced by The Parade Company of Detroit,”.

Commercial exports British Columbia Canada

In conclusion, British Columbia’s diverse resources, innovative sectors, and strategic infrastructure position it as a vital player in global trade, promising sustainable economic growth and increased export opportunities for the province in the coming years.

If you have driven by an oil field before, you might have seen fires popping up in the distance. These blazes can burn day and night and typically spout out of tall, pole-like structures. Commercial fires in Texas are common sights in an oil field.

But, what are these fires? Where do they come from? And, why are they burning in oil fields?

Reasons for Fires in Oil Fields

The burning fires that you see in oil fields are called flares. They are brought about by gas flaring, or the process of burning the natural gas that comes with extracting oil.

Flaring occurs because of several reasons, and we’ll discuss some of them below.

Safety

Flaring is a practice that began in the very early years of oil production roughly more than 160 years ago. Today, flaring is still utilized by oil companies because it is a relatively safe process of disposing of the natural gas that comes from extracting oil.

Safety is perhaps the no. 1 reason for flaring or burning gas from oil extraction. Oil companies have to deal with exceptionally high and changeable pressures during the extraction and processing of the oil and gas. So, any sudden or pronounced increase in pressure can trigger an explosion and a fire.

In short, oil companies have to burn the excess gas to de-pressurize their equipment. It is a way for gas flaring operators to manage unpredictable and large pressure variations during the oil extraction process.

Industrial accidents

Because of the industry’s focus on safety and compliance with regulations, it is rare that natural gas related to oil extraction can cause fires. However, when ignited, these blazes can last for long periods of time because they can be difficult to contain and control.

Technical and economic challenges

At the end of the day, oil companies are businesses that want to earn a profit. So, they have to consider if capturing, transporting, processing, and selling the natural gas related to oil extraction is worth it.

Two major deterrents to processing natural gas are logistics and the sheer amount of capital necessary to build the infrastructure to capture natural gas.

Because of the nature of their business, oil companies face several challenges in logistics. First of all, oil fields are typically located in remote parts of the country. This means that access to the oil fields might prove difficult.

Another issue oil firms face is the possibility that the oil field might not produce large or consistent volumes of natural gas. Or, oil production sites might be small and scattered across a location.

In any case, the natural gas is wasted because it is just burned. The burning process also adds to pollution.

Admittedly, flaring is an inefficient way of disposing of gas that’s associated with extracting oil. However, alternatives to gas flaring, such as liquefied natural gas plants, small electricity generation plants, and integrated compressed natural gas systems, are most often expensive to implement. So, despite advancements in small-scale gas utilization technologies, flaring remains a cheap and safe option for oil firms. They often prefer this method over the huge investments necessary to capture, transport, process, and sell the natural gas.

The Environmental Impacts of Fires in Oil Fields

There is a huge amount of gas being burned in oil fields. According to The World Bank, thousands of flares at oil production sites all over the world burned around 148 billion cubic meters of gas in 2023 alone. If the natural gas was instead captured and put to use, that amount of natural gas could power the entire region of sub-Saharan Africa.

In the U.S., the states with the most reported vented and flared natural gas are Wyoming, Texas, and North Dakota. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), “North Dakota has had high rates of venting and flaring since 2006 because associated natural gas production in the Bakken region grew more quickly than natural gas production and processing facilities, as well as pipeline takeaway capacity.”

The burning of natural gas in oil fields poses two main environmental issues: emissions of greenhouse gases and black carbon.

CO2 and methane emissions

A major problem with fires in oil fields is the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In particular, gas flaring emits a significant amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that contributes to global warming.

According to The World Bank: “Assuming a ‘typical’ associated gas composition, a flare combustion efficiency of 98% and a Global Warming Potential for methane of 28, each cubic meter of associated gas flared results in about 2.6 kilograms of CO2 equivalent emissions (CO2e), resulting in over 350 million tons of CO2equivalent emissions annually.”

Aside from carbon dioxide, gas flaring also sometimes releases raw methane. According to the UN Environment Programme, methane is 80 times more potent at warming than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. In fact, about 30% of global warming since pre-industrial times is attributed to this dangerous greenhouse gas. And, it has only been increasing.

However, compared to carbon dioxide, methane has more of a near term or short to medium term impact. It only takes around 10 years or one decade for methane in the atmosphere to break down. In contrast, carbon dioxide can remain in the atmosphere for hundreds to thousands of years.

Black carbon pollution

Aside from the emission of greenhouse gases, fires or gas flares in oil fields also sometimes release black carbon into the atmosphere. Also known as soot, black carbon is a pollutant that is more commonly produced through the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels.

While black carbon only remains in the atmosphere for just a few days or weeks, it still has a huge impact on the climate. In particular, black carbon emission is a major concern in the Arctic region. Experts believe that black carbon deposits in the region have resulted in the melting of snow and ice at a higher rate.

According to research from the European Geosciences Union, gas flaring contributes to around 40% of the annual black carbon deposits in the Arctic. However, the exact amount of black carbon emissions depends on the composition of the natural gas and the specific conditions under which the gas is burned.

As a small business owner, I can empathize with needing sources of working capital to keep our company afloat. Sometimes, all it takes would be a few large projects, but when those do not come to fruition, other sources will be needed, and banks are not always the best option.

And, unless you are financially wealthy, you will need some financial backing and help with Alternative business financing options.

According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), they identify the following sources of working capital as, “Alternative Lending – Traditionally, small business owners have turned to banks or credit unions for loans, lines of credit, etc.

The good news is alternative lending offers a quicker and easier process when it comes to borrowing money. Some of the major differences between banks and alternative lenders can be broken down into three main areas; application process, qualification requirements and the time it takes to fund.

Invoice Financing – Do you have unpaid invoices? The fact is late payments and overdue invoices can cause a serious cash flow problem for a business. A financing solution known as invoice financing or accounts receivable financing, allows small business owners to free up unpaid invoices.

Revolving Line of Credit – Unlike traditional business loans, which have a fixed monthly payment and repayment term, a revolving line of credit is open indefinitely. It provides a business the flexibility to access funding up to a set credit limit at any given time,”.

Explain the sources of working capital

Below are some of the most used sources of working capital:

Share capital happens when a company is first registered and has been put into the company by the shareholders to finance the company’s activities.

Mortgage loan

Retained Profit is what a company has made over the years, which has not been distributed to shareholders in the form of dividends and may be used to finance expansion or other investments without raising external capital.

Venture Capital is money invested in a company in exchange for an equity stake in the business; however, they are only interested in companies with high growth potential and are willing to take on more risk than traditional investors.

A debenture is a loan secured against the assets of a company, usually issued by larger companies, and carries a lower risk than unsecured loans, as their assets back them.

Project finance is used to finance the construction of a specific project, such as a new factory or power plant, typically provided by a consortium of banks or other financial institutions.

Asset-based lending is secured against the assets of a company, such as inventory or equipment, secured by businesses that have difficulty obtaining traditional bank financing.

Factoring allows a company to sell its accounts receivable (invoices) to a third party at a discount to raise cash for companies that have difficulty collecting payments from their customers.

Invoice financing allows a company to sell its accounts receivable (invoices) to a third party at a discount to raise cash.

Types of business loans

A line of credit is like a financial safety net for businesses, offering them a set limit of funds to tap into as needed, usually for short-term expenses. Microloans, on the other hand, are smaller loans aimed at helping entrepreneurs who may struggle to get traditional bank loans. Community-focused organizations or microfinance institutions often provide these.

When it comes to SBA loans, these are crafted to support small businesses in securing funding. Although offered through traditional banks, they’re backed by the U.S. government, which adds an extra layer of security for both lenders and borrowers.

If you’re looking to fund your business by gathering small contributions from a large group of people, crowdfunding might be the way to go. Platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo popularize this approach, though it can also be implemented through events or other community efforts.

Bootstrapping is a self-reliant way to finance a business, utilizing personal savings or resources without seeking external investments. Many startups and small businesses use this approach due to limited access to other funding options.

Term loans are typically used for significant purchases like equipment or real estate. They are structured to be paid back over a set period, often in equal monthly installments.

For specific purchases like equipment, businesses might consider equipment financing. This often comes in the form of leasing, where the business rents the equipment for a period before buying it outright.

Small business loans cater specifically to various needs within a business, be it for new gear, expanding premises, or simply maintaining cash flow.

On the topic of cash flow, invoice financing can be a lifesaver. It allows companies to sell invoices to a third party at a discount, getting immediate funds to manage cash flow challenges, mainly when customers are slow to pay.

A merchant cash advance offers business funds in exchange for a cut of future sales, providing an alternative for those who might find it challenging to secure a conventional bank loan.

Pledge loans involve securing funds by pledging assets like stocks or property, providing a means to finance when traditional loans aren’t an option.

Import financing is specialized lending for businesses needing to purchase goods from abroad, often supported by letters of credit to protect both buyer and lender.

Government loans are another avenue provided by various agencies supporting everything from startups to education and housing.

Lastly, personal loans are direct transactions between individuals, helping cover a range of needs, from home upgrades to medical expenses or debt consolidation.

What are the sources of working capital

In conclusion, while securing working capital is crucial for small businesses to manage their operations smoothly, traditional bank loans are often inaccessible, so alternative financing options such as invoice financing, lines of credit, and crowdfunding can provide more viable solutions.

Each option has distinct features, like varying application processes and funding times, allowing businesses to choose what best suits their needs. By understanding these diverse sources, entrepreneurs can effectively address cash flow challenges and support their business growth and operational continuity.

Georgia peaches, of course! And a whole lot of fried foods, I am guessing. When my aunt moved south to Griffin, Georgia, a little quaint southern town just outside of Atlanta, both my mom and I were excited to visit from Michigan. We were looking forward to trying some of that southern comfort food – especially the fried chicken for me. It did not take my aunt long to adjust to Georgia weather, way of living and eating – she’s a big lady and loves to eat.

Below are some of the types of food we all tried within her first months of living in the “deep South.” In fact, let’s hear from the experts. According to The Food Network:

“Peaces

Pimento cheese

Boiled peanuts

Vidalia onions

Meat & Three (meatloaf, fried catfish, country fried steak and smoked turkey on offer, though the fried chicken, made from a time-honored recipe, is by far the most popular meat. Pair it with your choice of (3) sides including macaroni and cheese, fried okra, collard greens, squash casserole, green beans)

Barbeque

Chicken and dumplings

Pecan pie

Fried chicken

Fried green tomatoes

Georgia wild shrimp

Fried apple pies

Fried okra

Blueberries

Fried chicken biscuit

Pralines

Coca-Cola

Deviled eggs

Trout

Sweet tea,”.

Normally, I would consider myself somewhat of a foodie, but I have to be honest here – I did not know some of these foods were from Georgia. For example, I only buy Vidalia onions, and I had no clue they were from Georgia. Or even pimento cheese; I assumed that was an Italian thing! Being from Michigan, I assumed we were the blueberry state, but apparently, Georgia is among the top three states that produce blueberries.

In fact, Michigan is not number one, but Washington is. From The World Population Review, they show:

“Blueberry Production by State (measured in Tons)

Washington 90,000

Oregon 75,500

Georgia 43,250

California 37,250

Michigan 36,450

New Jersey 21,000

North Carolina 17,850

Florida 13,250,”.

Wow, that is a ton of blueberries! (haha)

What weather is Georgia known for?

With all of these wonderful foods and crops, what must the climate be like in Georgia to produce and export these goods? Since Georgia is a large state, we’ll keep our focus near the Atlanta region.

Expert scientists at The National Weather Service say that the climatology of North Georgia (excluding the mountains) is like, “The area experiences all four seasons. Summers typically consist of long spells of warm and humid weather. Average afternoon high temperatures are in the upper 80s to around 90. Readings of 90 or higher can be expected on 30 to 60 days. Overnight lows usually range from the middle 60s to lower 70s.

Temperatures during winter months are more variable. Oftentimes, stretches of mild weather will alternate with cold spells. Winter high temperatures average in the 50s. Lows average in the mid to lower 30s. Lows of 32 degrees or lower can be expected on 50 to 70 days.

Spring and Autumn seasons are characterized by much variability from day to day and from year to year. The average date of the first freeze in the autumn is in late October. The average date of the last freeze in the spring is in early April.

Precipitation – A measurable amount of rain falls on about 120 days each year, producing amounts averaging between 50 and 55 inches. As for snowfall, the average annual total is 1 or 2 inches in the northern counties. Usually this snowfall occurs on just one or two days.

Averaging over many years, the driest months are September and October while the wettest month is March. Thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer months. On a typical year, thunder will be heard on 50 to 60 days,”.

When my cousin moved from Michigan down to the Florida Keys, I helped him drive down with all of his life’s possessions and his three dogs, also known as “family,” we drove through Atlanta. First of all, there was so much traffic – even more than we see in Detroit. Second and most notably, it was snowing during the month of March! I always enjoy it when it snows in the South because I get to tease my family members who supposedly left Michigan because it was too cold. I digress.

The ever-changing weather in Georgia might surprise newcomers or visitors who aren’t familiar with the Southeast’s dynamic climate. While its summers are hot and humid, often laced with afternoon thunderstorms, there’s a certain charm in how the state transitions through seasons.

With lush springs full of blossoming dogwoods and crisp autumns colored by vibrant foliage, Georgia offers a diverse array of climate experiences. When planning outdoor activities, it’s wise to note that heavy rain can cause brief disruptions, especially in the spring when thunderstorms are common. This variance in weather is key to the state’s agricultural success, supporting crops like peaches and peanuts. So, whether you’re a fan of sun-drenched days or the occasional snowfall surprise, Georgia’s climate certainly keeps life interesting and diverse throughout the year.

Professional sports teams in Georgia

I remember when I was a little girl (ok, I am about to date myself), cable television was a new thing, and we used to get a whole lot more channels included in the basic subscription. TBS (Turner Broadcasting System) was known as the Atlanta channel, and we would watch the Brave’s baseball team. Furthermore, the other popular teams in Georgia are the Atlanta United soccer team, the Atlanta Hawks basketball team, the Atlanta Falcons are the football team, the Atlanta Dream is the women’s professional basketball team, and Georgia Swarm is their indoor lacrosse team, to name a few.

And just for kicks, since we’re reminiscing about cable television, here are some of the first national cable networks:

HBO

TBS

CBN

CNN

MTV

NICK

Besides watching the Atlanta Braves baseball on TBS, we watched Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock on HBO, 24/7 news on CNN for my grandparents, MTV for all the great music videos coming out, NICK or Nickelodeon for us kids, and my mom’s favorite 1960’s reruns later on in the day when it switched to “Nick at Night,” and lastly, CBN with all the televangelists, which we did not watch.

What food is Georgia known for?

Overall, Georgia is famously known for its rich culinary offerings, from delectable peaches and fried chicken to vibrant pimento cheese and hearty pecan pie, reflecting the state’s warm hospitality and diverse agricultural bounty.

Kenosha are the names of a county in Wisconsin and of a city within that county. So, there’s the city of Kenosha that’s located in Kenosha County in Wisconsin.

On a map, you can find Kenosha County at the far southeast corner of the state of Wisconsin. The city of Kenosha is at the eastern part of the county, right by the shores of Lake Michigan.

In addition to the city, Kenosha County is also comprised of 11 villages and towns. These are the towns of Brighton, Paris, Randall, Wheatland, the town/village of Somers, and the villages of Bristol, Genoa City, Paddock Lake, Pleasant Prairie, Salem Lakes and Twin Lakes.

The name came from Kenozia, a Native American word that means “place of the pike,” which is a type of fish. In 1836, it was renamed Pike Creek and then again in 1837 to Southport. Finally, in 1850, it took on the name Kenosha as a modernized version of the Indigenous name. However, Kenoshans love to call their hometown Keno or K-Town.

Getting To and Around Kenosha

Kenosha is about 40 miles (64 km) from Milwaukee to the north and around 66 miles (106 km) from Chicago to the south via I-94 E.

If you’re flying in, Kenosha has its own airport, the Kenosha Regional Airport, but it is also accessible through three other airports, namely Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee as well as O’Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport in Chicago. After you’ve landed in either Milwaukee or Chicago, you can get on the Airport Express from Mitchell International Airport or O’Hare International Airport to Kenosha.

If you’re commuting, you can take a bus from the Wisconsin Coach Lines. It operates buses daily from Milwaukee through Racine and Kenosha and vice versa. There’s also the Metra Commuter Rail system from Chicago to Kenosha.

To take you on a spin around the city, hop on either the electric streetcars or the lakefront trolley. The streetcars run along a 2-mile loop of downtown, the historic districts, HarborPark, the Sculpture Walk and the shores of Lake Michigan. Meanwhile, the trolley runs through downtown between the Kemper Center and University of Wisconsin-Parkside from June to August.

What is Kenosha Known for

Kenosha is famous for many things, such as being home to Mark Ruffalo, popular athletes, inventors and other famous people and many other things besides. Here are some of them.

Manufacturing town

For over a hundred years, Kenosha has been the hub of automotive manufacturers and other companies. It’s been home to American Motors and DaimlerChrysler Corporation as well as to Simmons Bedding Company, American Brass, Bain Wagon and many other companies. Today, Kenosha is the global headquarters for Jockey International, Inc. and Snap-on Incorporated. Amazon also has warehouses there.

Historical sites

Kenosha is filled to the brim with history, but its story is especially etched in the four districts (Library Park Historic District, the Pearl Street Historic District, Third Avenue Historic District and the Civic Center Historic District) and 21 locations that are on the National Register of Historic Places.

It is also the venue of the oldest operating velodrome in the country, the Washington Park Velodrome, which has hosted bicycle races since 1927, as well as the oldest continuously operating lunch car diner, Franks Diner, and its gargantuan Garbage Plate meal.

Being a harbor town, Kenosha also features two lighthouses. The North Pier Lighthouse is privately owned, but you can still take pictures with it in the background if you’re near enough to the landmark. On the other hand, the Southport lighthouse and its keeper’s house are part of the Southport Light Station Museum. It is open to the public at designated hours, so you can schedule a visit to climb the 72 steps that lead to its lighthouse tower for beautiful views.

Of course, don’t forget to visit Kenosha’s other museums. See life-sized exhibits of meat-eating theropods at The Dinosaur Discovery Museum and the largest collection of Woolly Mammoth bones ever discovered at the Kenosha Public Museum. The Civil War Museum, with its 360-degree film experience, is just next door too. Meanwhile, the Kenosha History Center takes visitors deep into the past through three exhibit galleries. A fourth gallery focuses on maritime history and is located at the Southport Light Station.

Downtown discoveries

There’s more to Kenosha than just lighthouses and museums, though. Downtown is where you want to head for history, shops, food and entertainment. There are tons of restaurants, pubs and breweries in downtown, but if you prefer fresh food, head to the farmers market at Kenosha’s Original HarborMarket and the Kenosha Public Market on Saturdays.

Downtown is also the venue of many special events.

In May, Kenosha hosts “The Cheesiest Marathon,” where runners from across the country and the globe join donning their cheesiest apparel to win a big cheese medal.

Summertime is marked by free outdoor concerts and car shows and cruise-in nights, as the spirit of the early auto manufacturing days fill the summer air. Pop up during these events to see thousands of classic cars from Wisconsin and other states. There’s also the Kenosha Homecoming Car Show, the world’s largest AMC car show, which is held every three years.

Lightin’ Up occurs the day after Thanksgiving each year. It begins with a tree lighting ceremony at Fountain Plaza. The Christmas tree, which is donated by a local, is decked up in 1,200 colored bulbs. The celebration continues with live entertainment and family activities.

In winter, there’s the Snow Daze Festival, which features ice sculptures displayed in front of storefronts.

Once you’ve had your fill of delicious food and fun events, you can stop and savor the views of Lake Michigan. Don’t forget to snag some Kenosha swag or other vintage or handmade items from its boutique stores as a souvenir of your visit to the city.

Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is a major tourist draw for Kenosha. Nearly 90% of the county has access to the lake through beaches, marinas, parks and bike paths.

Aside from downtown, the HarborPark neighborhood is another good place to enjoy Lake Michigan. HarborPark used to be a factory town, but today its 69 acres offers plenty of public activities, including biking, fishing and rollerblading along the harbor. Or, simply take a stroll down the promenade.

If you want to get into the cool lake waters, head to any of the five public beaches or Simmons Island. Or, you can kayak, canoe, paddle, or fish on the lake. For even more fun, try the duck-themed pedal boats at Kenosha Community Sailing Center.

After wind and hail, the most common cause of homeowners insurance claims is fire and lightning. In 2021, wind and hail accounted for 39.4% of property damage claims, while fire and lightning accounted for 24.8% of property damage claims, according to the Insurance Information Institute (III or Triple-I).

This isn’t surprising as a house fire is a fairly common occurrence in the U.S. According to the Triple-I, a house fire occurs every 87 seconds in the country. This averages to 358,000 residential fires annually, according to Center for Disease Control (CDC), the U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

These government agencies estimate that house fires cause nearly $12 billion damage each year and $11.1 billion is lost to property damage caused by residential fires.

As a homeowner paying insurance premiums, you’d expect to receive your fire claims to help you rebuild and recover. Unfortunately, fire claims generally have a low success rate, and it doesn’t help that insurers have the right to deny your claim. Insurers have various reasons for denying a fire claim, but here are some of the most common ones.

Inadequate or Insufficient Coverage

This means that you own an insurance policy that doesn’t cover the incident that caused the fire or the type of damage that ensued. In other words, your policy is limited to what incidents or types of damage it can cover and this particular case doesn’t fit that criteria.

For instance, your policy might stipulate that it only covers fire damage but not water or smoke damage. So, it will only provide remuneration for damages that are the direct result of a fire, but not for damages brought about by the ensuing smoke or water damage caused by fire sprinklers.

In addition, your insurance policy might also be limited to only specific types of fire damage. For instance, it might not pay for damages caused by wildfires, war or “acts of God.”

As your insurance company is only obligated to pay for covered perils outlined in your policy, it will deny claims that are outside its coverage.

Non-Payment or Missed Payment of Insurance Premiums

Another common reason why insurers deny fire claims is missed premiums. This happens when you missed to pay your premiums, you did not pay your latest premiums or you did not pay your premiums on time.

When this happens, it means you have failed to meet your obligations, which is to pay your premiums and pay them on time. Simply put, if you failed to keep your insurance premiums up-to-date, your insurer has no obligation to pay for the fire damages.

Lack of Evidence or Documentation

All insurance claims require proper documentation. This includes pictures, repair estimates and invoices, and any other supporting documents that prove the existence of fire damage and the resulting losses or expenses.

For instance, you must prove ownership of the items that were damaged or lost in the fire. You must also have records or documents stating the value of the damaged items, which includes your property, belongings and all other insured things. Last but not least, you must also provide enough evidence of the extent of the fire damage. All of the evidence must be verifiable too.

When one or more of the necessary evidence is missing or cannot be verified, your insurance company will deny your claim.

Property Value Dispute

Following up on the above, another common reason by which insurers deny your fire claim is by disputing the valuations. As much as you want to avoid getting a compensation that is way below the amount of losses you’ve suffered, you also don’t want to file a claim for an amount that is above what the actual damage is worth.

When you lack proof or evidence for your claim, you open the door for disagreements over the valuation of your property and belongings as well as the amount of replacement costs. That is why it’s essential to maintain accurate records that prove, without a doubt, how much an item is worth. You can also ask the help of a professional appraiser to make the proper valuations for you, especially when the insurance company makes a lowball offer.

Misrepresentation

Misrepresentation is providing false or misleading information. In short, it’s being dishonest. While you might get away with white lies every once in a while, dishonesty must be avoided both when purchasing insurance and when filing claims with an insurer.

In insurance, misrepresentation means lying or stating incorrect information as well as omitting or concealing information, especially those that might influence an insurance company’s decision on your claim.

However, whether or not you stated the facts in your application will soon be found out, as your insurer will conduct its own investigation regarding your claim. Misrepresentation will only lower your chances of approval, so it’s best to avoid it altogether.

Unpermitted Work

As a homeowner, you have the responsibility to keep your home in good condition. However, you need to do so properly. This means fixing issues with the necessary inspections and permits as well as working only with licensed professionals for all maintenance and repair jobs. And, you must keep records of all their works in the event that you need to file a claim.

In other words, you should not DIY any issues at home. If you do, you risk denial of your claim.

For instance, don’t do any electrical work yourself. In case faulty installation or faulty wiring becomes an issue and starts a fire, your insurance company will deny your claim because you did not maintain your property correctly.

Defective Workmanship

Fires can get started because of poor construction design or defective workmanship. This basically means that some portion of your house was built poorly. If this is the case, your claim will be denied.

Faulty construction or repairs can result from a contractor’s lack of skill or negligence, which oftentimes happens when homeowners work with a builder without the proper licenses and permits.

Another reason an insurance company denies a claim is when they find out that you’ve used defective materials or those with poor fire protection qualities. For instance, materials that have been recalled by manufacturers or relevant authorities.
