Ilocos' Pride: Bangui Wind Farm

We had a chance to visit the Bangui, Ilocos Norte Wind farm last month. The view of the gigantic wind mills lining up the shoreline is just amazing.

Windmills along the shoreline

Along the 9 kilometer beach are 20 Vestas wind turbines facing the South China Sea. Each turbine is 70 meters tall with blades that are 41 meters in length that can generate 1.65MW of power. That’s a massive 33MW power capacity of the entire farm that equates to 40% of Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative (INEC) power requirement.

The wind farm has been in operation since 2005 and it was built by Northwind Power Development Corporation at a cost of $50 million. The first phase of the project consists of 15 with turbines.

Additional 5 turbines were added during phase two that was completed on August 2008. Another interesting fact is that this project was the first large-scale wind power plant in South-East Asia.

The wind farm in Ilocos Norte only proves that our country has great potential on renewable energy projects. The site also attracts a lot of tourist because of its magnificent view.

We can harness this energy by using solar panel that converts solar energy into electrical energy.

The effects of the growing energy crisis are noticeably evident. Rotating power outage, higher electric bills, soaring oil prices are just a few examples. On a global scale, it seems impossible to solve but by viewing it on a personal level we as individuals can do a lot to resolve this problem.

One way is to become aware of how much energy we are using in order to control it. We can even produce energy right from the comfort of our home. That’s the beauty of technology. Solar panel comes in many varieties including home solar kits. One product is Adtel Home Solar Kit.

The 40-watt Plug ‘N’ Play system includes:
-AM/FM radio
-a multiport cellphone charger for Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson phones
-two 1.8W LED lamps
The five-watt system includes:
-control box and a 2W LED lamp and can power a three-volt radio
-a cellphone charger

Having these kinds of kits will surely provide benefits:<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 100px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UKILlH_6tDA/TIEFT8qz2nI/AAAAAAAAABo/ad_3y8Do1Mo/s200/PICT0182.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512693259139537522" />
1. Hosted by Dr. M. Sanjayan, lead scientist at The Nature Conservancy. It is a very informative show that explains the status of fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. It aims to help educate viewers and empower them to take action with their personal energy needs.

POWERING THE FUTURE puts energy on the national stage, addressing the challenge from every angle and cutting through the noise by establishing a target: identifying a clean, limitless, secure energy supply and addressing how it could possibly be delivered. Producers traveled to more than 30 different locations around the world -- from an offshore oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico to the oil sands of Canada, Washington, DC to Beijing, China - to meet with the people at the heart of the issue.

Here's a youtube link to the first episode: The Energy Revolution

Sanjayan, explores the beginnings of a shift in energy use that will change the world. Whether for national security, the economy, or the health of our planet, there are as many drivers for change as there are technologies vying for a top spot. The hope is for a silver bullet to solve the problem all at once; the reality is that mankind is looking at the next industrial revolution, requiring the greatest minds and all the creativity we can harness. The episode looks at cutting edge technologies that could allow us to break our dependence on fossil fuels.

Sources: http://press.discovery.com/us/dsc/programs/powering-future/

10 Best Green Jobs
