First Sod Install of the Spring

Just wanted to share some of the photos from this sod install.

Total of 1350 sq. ft.

We had to do some irrigation repairs as well to ensure maximum coverage.

Total Cost of this project was 1,475.00

I'm not the cheapest, but certainly not the most expensive either. I include a couple of follow up visits as well to ensure the sod takes.

Getting kids involved for an Earth Day activity is fun, and teaches kids some invaluable things that they can use all through life. Kids are the future of this planet and how we cultivate it's resources.

Hi Everyone!!

I have not been able to keep up on the blog format of my business website. I will more than likely be posting some interesting new things this winter.

I am going to be updating my Services page soon. I feel it needs refreshing. I am also going to be adding in different packages of gutter cleanings.

December is a great month to get them cleaned. Gutters should be maintained twice a year in order to avoid the pitfalls and nuisances that can come in not doing it. I have been shopping around to look at prices other companies charge... and I am very underpriced for what I do.

I tend to forget that I am a Licensed Contractor, who is insured, and has expenses. I like to keep prices affordable for everyone, but I am very thorough in what I do, and should charge accordingly.

There will be "Standard" Gutter Cleaning Package

"Premium"

"Platinum" Gutter Cleaning Package

Price will depend on Small, Medium, or Large home.

This is a change in my 1 story and 2 story pricing now. A two story home may qualify for the small pricing plan.

We will also offer two additional options for our gutter cleaning services.

A 10 point inspection report

A thorough, careful inspection of all seams and downspouts to provide a detailed, photographic report so that future needs can be anticipated and addressed, where possible, before damage occurs.

This inspection report will run

$40 dollars for Small

$70 dollars for Medium

$100 dollars for Large

(This is in addition to the cleaning package)

Installation of Downspout Leaf Strainers

Downspout leaf strainers are specialized products, designed to prevent the build-up of leaves and other organic materials inside your downspouts. This ensures a much higher level of protection for your home, dramatically reducing the likelihood of blockages forming before your next scheduled cleaning in 6 months. This is available as an add on to the cleaning package of your choice. $8 each, installation included.

We can also add flex hose to downspouts to help water drain away from the home.

Gutter cleaning is one of the expenses in being a home owner. Proper maintenance can save you from some very costly damage to your home. Mold, Mildew, Leaking, Wood Rot, Roof Damage can all be very expensive.

The Best Fall Flowers

Fall is coming!! Pumpkins, Leaves, Wind, .... What about some gorgeous fall blooming beauties??

Here are some amazing colorful flowers to keep the spring and summer appeal in your garden and landscape, without having to deal with the heat.

Aster Novi-Belgii Zones 4-9

These daisy like beauties pop open in late August and continue on until the winter chill. A genus of flowering plants from the Asteraceae family. The name Aster is Greek for "Star" . Full sun to part sun and loves loamy soil... (who doesn't?) and can grow from 8 inches to 8 feet. Red, Pink, Purple, and White can flood your landscape and enchant visitors through fall months. If you get the taller variety of Aster make sure to stake them upright, as well as pinching the young shoots to encourage bushy growth. These attract butterflies like crazy.

Calendula Zones 3-10

This guy does a great job giving info on Calendula. Calendula is often mistaken for Marigolds. These a great addition to your fall garden and provide herbal remedies.

Agastache Zones 8-10

Agastache (Hyssop) blooms in a variety of colors. Red, purple, pink, blue, white colors can accent a great fall flower garden. Full sun will give the most prolific show of flowers.. I like these because they tolerate heat very well, but also can deal with shade on those overcast fall days.

Humming birds, butterflies, and bees love the aromatic foliage that these fall favorites carry and dazzle with. The Agastache is also known as the humming bird mint. One cool fact is if you rub the foliage on your skin, it acts as a mosquito repellent.

Caryopteris Zones 5-9

Caryopteris is a late bloomer shrub. Also known as blue mist spirea, or heavenly blue, one variety is even called Dark Knight which I love.

I love the deep green leave contrast these have. Very drought tolerant and

deer-resistant. A great border shrub that grows fairly low so that you can place more behind in your garden. Just a very well behaved shrub that attract butterflies.

Lawns and Dog Urine

It's a price you pay when you have a furry loved one in your life.

What can we do??

Let's educate ourselves on why this happens first.

A dogs urine contains urea. Urea is a form of ammonia which converts into nitrates.

You might be saying " I thought nitrogen was good for grass. " Well yes it is.... in small doses.

Concentrated nitrate from a dogs urine burns the grass very bad. Especially the first early pee of the day.

How can you avoid the brown?

There really is no, easy solution. I've read things like adding tomato juice to your dogs diet, and supplements for your dog. I've yet to see those work.

If you want to avoid the brown, you need to water the location of the pee immediatley after. Diluting the urine is a sure fire way to keep the grass green.

I said it wouldn't be easy. I mean c'mon!! Who really wants to water where their dog pees 2 to 3 times a day every single day???

Try setting your sprinkler timers to go off after the first pee of the day. This small action will help immensely. Yes that means every day, even just for 5 minutes on your off watering day. Invest in a good timer. You can have multiple settings. Have another spray down around 7 or 8 in the evening. Even for just 3 minutes. This will keep the urine and nitrates diluted to a point where the brown won't get out of hand.

You can also try and train your dog to pee in certain spots of the backyard. Allocate a small section. Put some plants in that section, dogs love to pee on plants. I suggest something like daylillies! Ha! I really do not like daylillies... sorry for anyone that does. I just see waaay too many everywhere.

Dogs tend to get dehydrated very easy. Dehydration leads to increased nitrates in the urine. Ensure your dog get adequate water every day.

Don't get caught up in female vs male dogs have different urine.. blah! Not true... pee is pee, sorry. They may pee differently but it still pools on the grass the same way.

One other thing I have read... which seems plausible is giving your dog filtered water. I know right!! Filtered water, but hey.. if it works. Dogs tend to drink more water if it's filtered apparently. I know I don't like hose water very much. LOL

If all else fails, just let them pee on the neighbors yard. HA! Just Kidding... or am I?

Is Romance Dead?

Buried beneath the soil of dinner and a movie, lies romance, intimacy, and old fashioned fun.

Don't get me wrong, I love movies and love to go out for dinner. My question is... doesn't it get boring and monotonous?

Whether we are just starting our adventure to find that special someone, or have had the luxury of waking up next to them for 30 years, romance shouldn't die. I'm guilty of it, sure. I always use the excuse that everything costs money. No it doesn't. I did some research on dating venues of the 40's and 50's to help my research on this topic.

Why are we so uncreative in the 2000's?

Our we Lazy? Has it just been so long that anyone has thought outside the box? I'm not sure, but I know I'm gonna spark some fun old date ideas today.

The Picnic

When was the last time you had a picnic?

Just you and that special someone. A park, the forest, or your own living room. Some cold pasta salad, bbq chicken, and lemonade. Ladies you will have to be the driving force behind this idea.
So many fun possibilities could really switch up the boredom in a marriage with this one. I highly recommend getting out of the house, but if you can't, late night picnics in the living room after the kids are in bed can be fun too.

You have to make it fun!

Dress up in 50's clothing, use your instagram and take pictures. Play frisbee, read a book together, talk about life and dreams.
The old fashioned picnic with just the two of you could dust off that romantic slump and add some sparkle again.

Parking

Have you ever parked?

Hahaha, I am on 34 really!!

Did you know that in the 50's a lot of towns and cities would set up special places for kids to go and park? It wasn't that they were encouraging sex or anything, they were actually trying to monitor and control it better.

Patrol cars would frequently check up on the area. Cars would be required to keep there lights on and be legally parked.

Automobiles have always provided fantastic privacy for exploration with that certain somebody.

Why don't you do it anymore??

Honestly this could be fun. Ask yourself, when is the last time you "necked" or engaged in "heavy petting" in a car?

Ha! I love those phrases.

Go find a spot in your area that is secluded and not "monitored" . Hopefully it has a view. Make a playlist of some romantic shoo bop shoo bop songs or Beyonce, whatever makes you happy. Take the time to enjoy each other's company again like kids in a car when you were first dating. I know public fornication is illegal so don't get too crazy with the make out part of the date.

Sunrise Hike

I am not a morning person at all.

I really like this idea though.

Every city has a spot where you can hike up and get a good view.

Plan out a sunrise hike with your sweetie.

Bring some water, some sort of breakfast item, and good hiking shoes. Leave early enough to get to the right spot so you can watch the sunrise together and enjoy a small breakfast. Take pictures to remember the moment... I know I would, cuz it would be one for the books to see me up that early. :)

Dance Class

I'm not talking about joining dancing with the stars, or dirty dancing, or boot scootin and boogying! Just a ball room dance class, salsa lessons, etc. . You can check your local community and see if they are offering classes. Usually not too expensive.

Ladies, it might be a challenge to get your man on board for this one, but I have faith in you. Guys... you want to impress her, you set up the class.

1 small bit of advice, make sure the class doesn't have a weird rule where you have to dance with other people. Bad experience for my wife and I. The whole point is to experience something new and fun together.

In the 50's dancing was HUGE!!! We unfortunately don't have as many good venues that could be found in the 50's to dance at. I am not a big fan of clubs where usually the music is terrible and you feel like you're at a rave. I'm sure you can find some occasions to try out your new moves once the class is over.

Local Farmers Market

I have had a lot of fun doing this one. Local farmers markets are full of cool stuff and good food. The atmosphere is fun and old fashioned. You can usually get a really good lunch for under 10 dollars for the two of you. Most farmers markets have taste sampling, music, and great finds.

Backyard Campout

Put the tent up in the backyard and leave the cell phone in the house. The point of a lot of these green dates is to get you out of your normal element. Get you out of your rut. Bring back some romance. The backyard campout with just you and your soul mate can be fun. Share a big sleeping bag. Use candles for light. Make some fun treats for the night before hand.

You can even do your sunrise hike the next morning early. Stargaze. Pretend the house doesn't exist other than for bathroom purposes. Get a book of ghost stories to read from by candle light. So many fun ideas you can do with this. It can be very romantic and fun.

Visit a national monument or park

You probably have a lot of untapped resources not too far from you that don't cost much at all. We recently visited Muir Woods and had a great time. Find out what is relatively close to you and go do it. Make it a date. So many different spots you can go that don't cost a thing other than maybe gas and your time.

Botanical gardens are fun and romantic and usually they can be found everywhere, some may allow you to picnic there.

Here are a few more ideas below:

Volunteer for a cause together

Go help on a farm for an afternoon

The ocean or beach

Long walks in new areas

Take up a new sport together

Plant a garden

Whatever you do, don't let the romance stay buried any longer. Life is short. The moments we make special and simple can bring smiles to our faces for years to come.

Put the cell phone down, mute it, turn it off. Get away from your normal daily environment.

Dress up, have fun. Neck, Pet, Hold hands, Sit at a park bench together and talk.

The effort put forth to be creative and romantic will add new life to your relationship.

Homemade Pistachio Mint Ice Cream

Latest and Greatest Recipe for

Healthy Organic Ice Cream... well,

as healthy as Ice Cream can get anyway. :)

Pistachio Mint

Amanda wasn't too sure this was going to be good, but my recipe didn't disappoint. As with everything I used organic products that are safer and healthier for my family. It's a little more pricey, that's why I grow mint and look for local farmers markets. Cost is nothing compared to what health care costs are these days.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 cup toasted unsalted pistachios, chopped up
2 eggs
3/4 sugar (Organic Sugar)
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract
10-15 mint leaves
dash of salt

Shell the Pistachios and use a food processor or knife to chop them up.

Pistachio Health Benefits

These little shelled health nuts are amazing. No wonder they cost so freakin much. Reduce heart disease due to the antioxidants and lutein found in pistachios. Lutein protects against oxidized LDL, which is worse than regular LDL. Pistachios help you look younger and fight the aging process due to the fat-soluable antioxidants in them. Diabetes, Weight loss, they even help hair to shine!! I got my pistachios from local seller, unsalted. Reap the benefits of these with some home made ice cream.

Crack eggs and whip together with mixer for about a minute until fluffy. Add the 3/4 cup of sugar and mix again.

In a heavy sauce pan put in your whipping cream and whole milk. Heat bringing to a slow simmer with pistachios and mint added. Simmer for 30 minutes to gain the flavor of pistachios and mint.

You can use cheesecloth or a fine mesh sieve to strain your mixture. The pistachios and mint have been sucked dry of their flavor by now. Mix 1 cup of the heated mixture to your egg and sugar bowl slowly. You want to wisk together the mixture at the same time. After, you can add rest of mixture to eggs and sugar. Put into fridge for a couple of hours, and then use your Ice Cream maker. I have a great cuisinart Ice Cream maker.

I added in some fresh chopped pistachios about 3 minutes before it was done.

I didn't add food coloring which a lot of recipes do.

Global warming is still a big issue of the world. Global meaning means increase in climate and is mainly caused by increasing concentration of carbon and other green house gases in the atmosphere. Some of the environmentalists said that Global warming is the only factors which are responsible for creating controversies than the most environment issues.

There are numerous factors responsible for global warming and one of the major factors responsible for this is over population. As, more the population, more resources will be used and more resources will be wasted and hence results in global warming. Even our day to day activities also lead to global warming. Even this is the best, easy and least expensive method for everyone to offset the carbon dioxide gas that they generate in their daily lives from their vehicles, refrigerator. Technology can also play an important role in this way. As now every work is done online on internet like online games (casinoeuro.com). No need to waste paper.

Gardening Apps Review 2012

I wanted to review a few of the gardening apps available this year.

Sometimes the problem with the gardening apps is they are made by techies and not gardeners. Gardener reviews on some apps really tell the story.

I really should use a couple of these apps more than I do.

Landscapers Companion

Landscapers companion is a really good on the go encyclopedia of information on plants, vegetables, flowers, and trees. I like the search feature on this app. Each plant has a profile with the plants zone, growth rate, requirements, etc. . 20,000 plants and vegetables are indexed. I also like that you can leave notes on the plant page for yourself and email as well.

Landscapers Companion isn't without flaws. I would like to see more how to information. A recent update fixed some bugs that had been reeking havoc. All in all at 4.99 the Landscapers Companion provides good on the go information. It's like having the Sunset guide on your phone or Ipad.

I give it 3 out of 4 GTB Stars!!

Mother Earth News Gardening Guide

This particular app is very helpful when pertaining to vegetable gardeners. I like that the archived materials come straight from Mother Earth News which is an environmental magazine that publishes organic gardening tips and other info.

I like that this app shares how to collect seeds, fantastic techniques for the average to expert grower. The app is totally free which makes it a

4 out of 4 GTB stars for me. The gardening guide app seems to be developed by actual gardeners which makes it nice.

When to Plant

Love, Love, Love this app. It's a 1.99 and worth it. Made by the same Mother Earth News Gardening News. It checks your growing area automatically and let's you know what you can grow each month. There is a resources tab that links into Mother Earth News. You really need this app if you grow all year.

Leafsnap

This one has so much potential but just really fails. I love the concept behind it, and I have been wanting something along these lines. You take a picture of a leaf that you are trying to identify and it will pull up several different possibilities for you. I'm pretty good at plant identification but still could use this tool if it worked properly. There hasn't been any updates for this since May of 2011. Really unfortunate.

The idea is 4 out of 4, but the execution just isn't there. Too many bugs, not specific enough. Sometimes it won't take picture. The apps free, so you can try it out, it can just get frustrating.

Well there is a quick review of some gardening apps. I'm hoping with advances in technology, there will be some great gardening apps to follow.

11 Ideas for having a "Green" backyard

I am working on my own backyard. I have gutted it and have a clean canvas to work with now. Designs with drawings in progress. I am so excited about my own project I can't even begin to tell you.

The first thing that came to my mind of course is what can I do to make this a sustainable paradise?

I am designing a Tuscan themed backyard and am working on a fairly small budget.

(Luckily I know a really good landscaper who is dirt cheap!)

As you can see in the above picture I have edited my logo for this post. I'm actually really digging the color scheme. Greening the grey. I like that.

What is Sustainable Agriculture?

Sustainable agriculture is a perfect eco system where ...

Water, Air, Soil, and Light work together. Sustain the economic viability of farm operations through "Green" practices that save resources, time, and money. Many practices in a backyard can be very counter productive. Pesticides is a big one. Too much water and not enough drainage. Insufficient light and poor soil conditions where nutrients are lacking terribly. The image above shows arrows in synch working with each other around our world.

In my personal opinion everyone should have a garden in their backyard, or front yard, balcony, window ledge, etc. You get the point right?

People tend to make gardening a chore vs a Joy. It requires a little work and time sure.

It requires a lot of time to sit and wait for prescriptions at the dr.'s office too.

We can really no longer trust the systems in place in our government. Corrupt lobbyists have stolen Washington, the FDA, and in my opinion the President as well. We have some of the worst regulated policies on food. We still are not labeling GMO foods. You can't even guarantee when you shop at expensive stores such as Whole Foods that you are getting foods from local farmers or foods not containing GMO's. I know these are bold statements I am making. I have read, researched, studied, and followed the past few years with extreme concern in our American food system. The quick sum up of what I have found is.... IT'S BROKE!!

I am not a liberal, or a quote unquote a tree hugger at all. I just care about the justice in our country providing better, safer, and ethical food to it's people. I believe our farmers just as our teachers in this country deserve to paid just as much as star athletes. I want our country to stop funding pharmaceutical companies off of so many Illnesses we get from the foods we eat.

Ok, enough of my ranting.

What do we do then?

Plant your own Fruits and Vegetables.

Make it a priority.

Teach your kids how to grow and make it the most mesmerizing experience of their life.

I would love to hear kids say " Man, when I grow up, I want to be a Farmer! "

I'm definitely in my Zone!! LOL

Your probably like ... um where's the 11 ways for a sustainable "green" backyard? Well here ya go!

1) Drip Lines

Drip lines save so much money in watering your backyard. You are much more efficient to where your water is actually going. My grandmother would have loved drip systems. In dry climates so much water is wasted from sprinklers, it just evaporates. Windy areas as well. I am telling you that drip lines are not as expensive, or difficult as you might think. I have so much fun installing them, I usually don't even charge as much as I could for the installation... it makes me happy when people are more efficient.

2) Bzzzzzzzz

You need bees, butterflies, humming birds roaming around in your backyard. Bees are so important to our agriculture. Plant bee friendly bushes and plants to attract them into pollinating your garden. Bees are good!!

3) Reduce Lawn Size

I have read about this one a lot. Do you know what the largest crop in America is that we water?? GRASS!! 40 Million acres to be exact. The lawn mowers we use to manicure our yards produce as much pollution as a car that has driven 20 miles. You will need some space in your backyard for all the goodies you plan on planting. Use space for the BEE friendly bushes and plants. Decorate and think outside the box. USE PINTEREST if you have no imagination.

4) Grow Your Own Food

If you don't already, start now. You can start small and grow bigger. You should start with an herb garden. You can grow some of your favorite fruits, like strawberries or get a lemon tree. Have fun with this. Grow Vertical, Horizontal, on a roof, wherever. You are gonna get rid of some grass anyways... plant something and see how it goes.

5) Compost

The synthetic crap out there today is horrible and builds up arsenic in our own backyards. Do you want your kids, or dogs exposed to that? Composting is the best way to fertilizer our lawns and gardens... and it saves waste. It's simple and easy. We have google for crying out loud.

6) No More Pesticides.

No more!! No more I say!! C'mon, pull the freakin weed that is buggin you. If you have a lot, get some vinegar and spray it. Get weed paper and mulch. Don't spray the bugs with toxic crap!! There is a reason why Unfoo foo and FiFi have tumors growing off of them! The stuff is bad. There are plenty of good effective organic sprays to rid yourself of pesky problems.

7) Water Barrels

I love em. I have posted over and over about em. Get one, install it, and use it. Rain Water is so much better for your gardens anyways. You can find a million different water barrels that you can purchase or make on your own. Nothing screams sustainability quite like a rain barrel.

8) Gas BBQ

When you have your own oasis or eden you want to share it. Gas releases far fewer pollutants than your charcoal grill. Propane gas is much cleaner and made 90% in the U.S. . I use propane products in my business and it ensures I am giving my clients greener service. Grill some of those garden fresh veggies on a shish Ka bob staying green with your gas grill.

9) Restore and Reuse

My Tuscan paradise is going to feature a lot of items that I have restored. One being my grandmothers old patio set. It's gorgeous and has real value to me. I am sanding it down and stripping it with natural products. I will be repainting it and including it. Wine barrels make great additions, and you can find some for dirt cheap at a winery near you. Look at yard sales or on craigs list for other items you can restore and reuse for your "Green" back yard.

10) An Outdoor Recycle Station

In my visit to Muir Woods the other day, I loved their recycle station. Waste, Recycle, Compost. Make a 3 garbage can system for your backyard. Your compost will be easy and readily available. Simplify your garbage inside so you can put it outside. Understand and educate yourself on what can be used as compost and what is recyclable. You will be very surprised what you can use as compost. The little station in the backyard can be fun and creative.

11) Reel Mower

For what grass you may have in the back, get a 140 dollar reel mower. Scott's 20 inch is perfect. I use it for customers that want that kind of look. Eliminate your carbon footprint and save money. You are taking the time with the other 10 steps to make a sustainable backyard... do you really wanna screw it up with a gas mower? Put small clippings back into the yard or add into your compost bin. Oldschool status!!

A day at Muir Woods

I had an amazing day yesterday with my family.

I hadn't been to Muir Woods since I was a kid.

We left early enough to beat the weekend crowds, and enjoy the serenity that can be found in these old woods.

Muir Woods National Monument is a very old redwood forest. It thrives on the coastal fog and weather of the pacific ocean.

Wikipedia tells the history better than I would.

History

One hundred fifty million years ago ancestors of redwood and sequoia trees grew throughout the United States. Today, the Sequoia sempervirens can be found only in a narrow, cool coastal belt from Monterey, California, in the south to Oregon in the north.

Before the logging industry came to California, there were an estimated 2 million acres (8,000 km²) of old growth forest containing redwoods growing in a narrow strip along the coast.

By the early 20th century, most of these forests had been cut down. Just north of the San Francisco Bay, one valley named Redwood Canyon remained uncut, mainly due to its relative inaccessibility.

This was noticed by U.S. Congressman William Kent. He and his wife, Elizabeth Thacher Kent, purchased 611 acres (247 ha) of land from the Tamalpais Land and Water Company for $45,000 with the goal of protecting the redwoods and the mountain above them.

In 1907, a water company in nearby Sausalito planned to dam Redwood Creek, thereby flooding the valley. When Kent objected to the plan, the water company took him to court to attempt to force the project to move ahead. Kent sidestepped the water company's plot by donating 295 acres (119 ha) of the redwood forest to the federal government, thus bypassing the local courts.

On January 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt declared the land a National Monument, the first to be created from land donated by a private individual. The original suggested name of the monument was the Kent Monument but Kent insisted the monument be named after naturalist John Muir, whose environmental campaigns helped to establish the National Park system. President Roosevelt agreed, writing back:

MY DEAR MR. KENT: By George! you are right.

Kent and Muir had become friends over shared views of wilderness preservation, but Kent's later support for the flooding of Hetch Hetchy caused Muir to end their friendship.^[7]

The Great Pumpkin Preparation Party

We are going to start off by planting our pumpkin patch. I like the weekend after the 4th of July to plant all your fall crops.

I know... Halloween in July?? No, just some fun with pumpkins. I wanted the kids to have fun with this initial prepping for the pumpkin patch.

Rustic Redwood Deck

I had a good friend ask if we could put down concrete or a deck in her Dad's backyard. I was like sure!! We decided to go with a redwood deck. It's very simple, and yet really cool and rustic. I thought it was perfect for her dad.

30 x 12 is the size of this bad boy. We started with the frame... in 100 degree weather. :(

Luckily I had the GTB Team in full force. I couldn't believe how awesome my son Jordan was. He blew me away. I mean it was 105 degrees and he was working non-stop.

I've been in a blog funk lately. Been feeling redundant and boring... I hate that feeling. I have been wanting to start making my own organic ice cream for the past 6 months. I finally broke down and bought this...

I love this thing!! No more ice and salt. Plus you get actual Ice Cream, not a slushy milk substance.

I am going to do several blogs on organic ice cream and the health benefits that can be reaped. Every one I do I promise will taste amazing!!

Green Thumb Barbers own line of Organic Ice Cream... In my wildest dreams!! It is a goal of mine to own my own GTB Flower shop, Tshirt Line, and Ice Cream brand. I am very ambitious :0) !!

So what we are making for the 4th of July spectacular is a Red, White and Blue Organic Ice Cream.

We are using Raspberries, Strawberries, and Blueberries mixed in with a classic old fashioned Vanilla flavored ice cream.

We are obviously using organic ingredients like Vitamin D milk, heavy whipping cream, Agave, eggs, and vanilla.

Why Organic Agave?

Health Benefits of Agave

Agave is a natural sweetener derived from a plant. A sweet syrup similar to honey is a fantastic alternative to sugar and offers great health benefits. What makes Agave better than sugar? Sugar is processed and has NO nutritive value...other than calories. Agave is a low glycemic sweetener. This means when it's consumed it won't cause a sharp rise or fall in blood sugar.
Saponins and fructans is also found in Agave. Saponins have anti-inflamatory and immune system-boosting properties. Aztecs use to treat wounds because of it's antibacterial properties.
Inulin is a type of fructan fiber and is highly effective in weight loss. Inulin is associated with lowering cholesterol, and reducing the risk of certain cancers.
Many people these days are replacing sugar and other sweeteners with Agave. Organic Agave, Honey, and Maple Syrup are fantastic sweeteners loaded with health benefits.

Eggs or no eggs

This is an ongoing debate that I'm going to stop here today. It's your preference!!! With eggs, you wanna make sure to use organic to avoid salmonella. Eggs help create a richer, smoother flavor in ice cream. You can make it without and it's probably just as good.

There is protein in the egg yolk as well. I know people might think oh my gosh the calories in using heavy cream, whole milk, and eggs. My response is, really??? It's all organic and yes there are calories, but not as much crap as what you buy at Baskin Robbins or the store.

I mix all the above ingredients together and place in the fridge for a couple of hours. I do this so I get a good and thick consistency in my new ice cream maker.

My 2 quart ice cream container needs to be refrigerated for at least 6 hours or overnight before use.

The organic fruit should be chopped up in small pieces.

The antioxidants in this Ice Cream will blow you away.

You use all organic fruit!!

Why organic fruit?

New reports show that blueberries and strawberries have more than 40 pesticides used on them. Cancer anyone??

You wanna pour the fruit in about 5 to 10 minutes before.

It will get smashed into small pieces which makes the ice cream look great, and gives it the red, white, and blue look.

The recipe above is simple. The organic agave I found to be about a half a cup. I started with 2 teaspoons and it just wasn't enough.

I started with 1 teaspoon of organic vanilla and added a little more as well. You can use vanilla beans too. In the first 15-20 minutes try the ice cream and add accordingly to how you want it to taste.

The fruit does add sweetness as well.

Whatever ice cream maker you use, after it's done you can place in the freezer for a couple of hours to get a thicker consistency.

I used small reusable mason jars that work great and the kids loved. We tied some fun 4th of July ribbon around, and added some fun touches.

The kids thought the Patriotic Dish was Amazing!!

We bought some fun tattoos as well to go along with our little Liberty ice cream party.

Even I got in on the action!!

In addition to the practices above, there are many other ideas you can implement to ensure your garden remains sustainable and truly organic.

· Before using fertilizers in your garden, consider the damage you are doing to the environment. If you choose to use such a product, ensure you go for a sustainable option produced from natural ingredients. Where possible, use compost to help you get the results you need. Investing in a worm farm or insectary is also a great idea, as they can be amazing helpers in ridding your garden of pests.

· Work to stop the spread of weeds by containing them or disposing of them safely. Certain plants, such as Japanese Knotweed are highly dangerous and require expert removal and disposal.

· Being a sustainable gardener means thinking about how you trim your garden. If you use an electric mower, ensure you use an energy efficient one. Try to mow lawns less often, too. A lawn of, say, 5cm in length is much healthier for your garden overall than something carefully manicured and resembling a bowling green.

Put these ideas and principles into practice in your garden today, and you will begin to see the difference very quickly! Sustainable gardening is an excellent way to contribute to improving the overall environment.
