Google and UNEP unite for local cleanup act!

Amazing but true but people across the planet are cleaning up their area and sharing their result with millions of people on the internet thanks to a new campaign launched by Google and the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP).During International Cleanup weekend in October 2007,community groups and individuals on every continent are heading out in small groups with friends and family to clean their local parks,beaches,neighbourbood areas and even streets! Well,great minds do think alike and under this new initiative their activities and results will create history by giving a global platform to every local initiative.The power of local community action is being matched by the power of World Wide Web says UNEP's Executive Director.This accounts for a formidable partneship uniting and empowering groups from Bangalore to Bermuda and Beijing to Berlin in common cause.

In yet another United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP) partnered events which reach out to local communities the Billion Tree Campaign this year has attracted tree planting pledges from regions all over the world.The annual "clean up the world weekend" organised last month inspired 35 million volunteers to fix and conserve their local environment. Sydney based Ian Kiernan has an active role to play when he pledged to clean up Sydney Harbour after a yacht race left him appalled by the amount of rubbish choking the world's oceans.
Awareness without action is out.Volunteering is in! And it's never too late to get started!!
So let each one of us begin with the thought that even I can make a difference and get rolling.

Just how hot can melting ice get?

Though we are aware that lives and livelihood of millions if not billions in many parts of the world is influenced by ice caps.Its time we seriously ponder about the fact just how hot can the ice get that our mere sustenence gets affected?The futures of hundreds of millions of people across the world will be affected by the declines in snow covered sea ice,glaciers,permafrost and lake ice.Based on today's population a one metre sea level rise would without adaptation measures, expose 45 million people to flooding with Asia particularly low lying Bangladesh being the most affected.Other areas of concern include many small islands and population living in the mega deltas of Ganges-Brahmaputra, the Mekong and the Nile in Africa.The geographical widespread is so alarming that if Nile delta can be affected so can any far flung area.

Contrary to the common notion that India is a small contributor to the worldwide phenomenon-global warming, we found out that we too are effecting and affected by global warming.

University of California based climate scientist Dr V Ramanathan said " Its getting darker and darker for India, as the sunlight is going down and the blanket of haze is growing thicker over the Indo-gangetic plains which might result in reduction of rainfall during the monsoons.

Professor Schrag said India was among the five countries, which account for 75 percent of coal usage in the world.

He also adds that " there will be a dramatic change in 10 years."

Both scientist claimed that the global warming impact on the environment is real.

Take a look at following facts:

Largest source of greenhouse gases is electricity generation.
More than 60% of electricity comes from burning coal.
An average home actually causes more air pollution than an average car.
Every time you turn on the light, you create a little pollution.
Switching off saves power and eventually pollution...

Do we still need more reasons to save power??
