One of the more popular trends with home remodeling projects is to create outdoor living areas that accomplish both form and function. The days of underutilizing outdoor areas are long forgotten thanks in large part to creative contractors and willing homeowners. Whether you want to create a space that is intimate and highly functional for your family or grand and beautiful to show off to your guests, you can now have it both. Below are a number of trends many homeowners are turning to when looking to create outdoor living space.

Make a checklist

When you begin thinking about how to create your outdoor living space, start by making a checklist of “wants”. Although your budget may quickly tell you that you can’t have everything all at once, it doesn’t hurt to have a list for future remodeling considerations. Your budget will help you prioritize what and when a remodeling project can be done. Below are a few ideas for you to consider:

New deck design

Outdoor fireplace

Screen porch

Covered porch

Outdoor kitchen

Outdoor lighting

Furniture

Regardless of what you start with and how you prioritize your list, you can create a space that is not only beautiful, but also functional. The comforts of home can now be found with the proper outdoor layout and furniture. If you live in a warm climate, you could potentially take advantage of your remodeled space year-round. Find a remodeling professional and ask what your options are and how you can get the most out of your new space.

Don’t ignore the details

The thing that makes a renovation project good and not spectacular is the details. Having the best layout with exceptional flow are two things that are great to have in an outdoor space. The details however are what takes the new space to another level. Pay attention to the small things in your renovation project. You almost want to design your outdoor space as if it’s part of your interior. Think about where you may want your flat-screen television to sit and of course don’t forget about the sound system. If you can think about your ideal interior setting and place it outdoors, then you are on the right track when thinking about the details.

Create a focal point

Creating a focal point will help serve as your design anchor. It can help break up some potential design monotony by allowing you to create unique areas around the focal point. A great example is taking advantage of a fire pit or a water feature. Both tend to attract people and can help you create sitting areas that may be a contrast in styles. A focal point helps in making the space beautiful while at the same time helping you create more functional space.

The goal with any outdoor space is to create a highly functional area that is also comfortable for your family and guests alike. Talk to a remodeling contractor about what specific options you may have when looking to blend these two together.

Garages have become very important parts of almost all the houses nowadays. A garage is not just a place to park vehicles but it also serves as an entry and exit point of the home. These doors are to be kept perfect at all the times as they can create lots of problems for the homeowners if not kept in check. Even the slightest of the problems with these doors can make homeowners face big troubles. Moreover, it’s not necessary that if a problem seems to be simple, it can be fixed easily. Some garage door problems require professional skills. However, there are some simple things which should be done before seeking professional assistance. Have a look at them-

Tightening Bolts and Screws- To ensure safety and security in your home, you need to make sure that all the bolts and screws of the door never go loose. You must check them periodically and in case you find them loose, tighten them instantly.

Reset the Tracks- The tracks of these doors should be perfectly aligned for flawless functioning. You should check them on a regular basis. If you find them misaligned, you can try to fix them on your own. Loosen the bolts on which the mounting brackets are held and reset the tracks. Align them carefully and tighten the bolts.

Clean the Tracks- Sometimes. Just a little dirt or grime can make these doors difficult to operate. The doors have to move along the tracks. If there is any grime, it will cause difficulties in smooth movements of the door. So you must keep the tracks of your doors free from any such thing which can cause hindrance in its operation.

Check all the Wires and Electrical Fittings- You may find it ridiculous but many times these doors don’t operate because of any problems with the electrical fittings but people call professional and pay unnecessarily for their visits. Check them properly and fix them to make your door work again.

Inspect the Sensors of the Opener- These sensors are there to keep any kinds of accidents at bay. If there is something between the pathway, these sensors don’t allow the opener to function. Moreover, the cameras of the sensors should be aligned properly for smooth functioning of the door. Make sure that the sensors of your doors are not misaligned.

If even after following all the above suggestions, you find yourself unable to identify or fix the problem, you need to consult a professional. But finding a garage door repair company is not an easy task at all. You need to consider a lot of things in order to end up with a perfect service provider. Let’s see the qualities of a good service provider-

Certifications- Companies providing garage door repair services need to obtain certification from the state before commencing their operation. It’s an offense to run such a company in the absence of any certifications. A certified company had gone through all the training and exams prescribed by the state and hence is capable of tackling these problems efficiently.

Experience- It will not be prudent to rely on a novice company for the repair of these doors. An experienced company is acquainted with all the complexities involved in repairs of these doors. This knowledge makes them competent of dealing with all the issues involved in an efficient manner.

Reputation- The reputation of a company is the best indicator of its performance. If people around you are having good opinions about a company, there must be something good about it. A reputed company has to keep up the good work in order to maintain its esteem. So, it really works better than its counterparts in the industry.

Skilled Staff- The technicians and other staff members of the company should be having all the required certifications. Taking services from a company which is certified but doesn’t hire good professionals can make you have some bad experiences. Pay good attention to the staff of the company.

Tools and Equipment- Even the best of the technicians may seem helpless in the absence of appropriate tools. Technological progress in all the fields is making all the works easier, quicker and cheaper by the means of innovative equipment and tools. Use of state of the art equipment is very essential to get satisfying results.

Own Warehouse- It will be better to have services from a company which owns a warehouse. Companies having their own warehouses can make more cost effective offers to the customers. Those companies which use warehouse of some other companies have to charge higher due to the additional cost borne by them.

The presence of all the above qualities in a company indicates that it’s a reliable and reputed organization. These qualities are not very rare to find when there are so many companies in the market but you need to investigate properly. Let’s see how to conduct this investigation-

Consult Your Friends- Having a few suggestions from your friends, neighbors or colleagues may be of great help in finding a good company. Almost all the homeowners are having garages in their homes. So, they all need to take services of such professionals now and then. They can tell you about their good and bad experiences which may prove to be very valuable in making this choice.

Visit Official Websites of the Company- All the service providers know the significance of online presence in today’s hi-tech world. They know that consumers of the present times don’t buy any products or services before conducting an online research. So they all have created their websites to avail required information to proposed customers. These websites may be visited to get an idea about the offers available to you.

Go Through Online Reviews- The most effective way to ascertain reputation and quality of any business is to read a few reviews about it. Today’s customers want to share all their experiences with all those people who are looking for such information. These reviews can assist you a lot in evaluating a company.

Your process of investigation of a garage door repair company comprises of just these three steps. After employing these methods, you will be in position to make a wise selection.

When you find your dream home or apartment, the enjoyable part of having your own living space begins. You can furnish your new area with pieces that show your personal preferences for color, decor, and style. Your furniture, linens, flooring, specially constructed features, and lighting all combine into the ambiance that you design with your own flavor of what’s stylish and attractive; the elements will work together to give an overall feeling that makes your home comfortable and pleasing to you and your guests. One of the most important pieces of furniture that you’ll select will be your sofa; this will be the anchor in your room around which all other additions must complement. A sofa will be an investment so you’ll want to shop and make your purchase from a dependable company that offers you style, quality, and a lovely design all combined into an elegant addition to your home.

Be a Smart Shopper

A smart shopper is a happy and satisfied shopper so knowing how to shop for a sofa before you go to a store is paramount to the success that you’ll have with your new piece of furniture. Test the frame strength to make sure it’s strong and will provide you with the comfort and durability that you need. Accurately measure for your sofa so that you’ll know how much space that you have; you can’t buy a sofa that’s too large or too small and achieve the effect that you desire. Think about how many cushions that you want, the type of filling you need, and the type of springs that are used in the construction of the sofa. Check the arms to see how they will impact your posture, how they will add comfort to your napping on a lazy day, and how the sofa will complement your decor.

Matching Pieces Complete Your Decor

You should select a color that you like, that matches your other decor, and that can be accessorized easily and in a cost-efficient way. Should you find other pieces that go with your sofa, now would be a good time to make an investment in your personal living space. Adding an attractive wing chair, a roomy armchair, or an elegant club chair will provide you with additional seating for your guests and give your family a variety of options whilst watching television or just chatting in the evening. Coloring lots is tricky so when you find pieces that go together, it’s wise to get them all in one purchase so you’ll have what you won’t without searching frantically for it later.

Visit the Company’s Website

Before you make a purchase, take the time to visit a company with which you’d like to do business to see their inventory, the colors available, and the prices so that you’ll have an idea of what fits within your budget limitations. If you’re looking for a bespoke brand such as the Chesterfield sofa, take notes of sizes and colors that you prefer so that you can match your other decor to your beautiful sofa. When you work with a dependable company you’ll get years of comfort and durable service, customer care that is second to none, and product detailing that will complement any decor. Review the contact information and store locations so that you can shop at your convenience and receive assistance from a team of professionals who knows their products and the service that you’ll get from your purchase. Whether it’s excellent posture and comfort whilst sitting or a lovely color that makes a statement of style, your new sofa will add luxury to your home that you’ll appreciate for years to come.

Working with a reputable company that only carries bespoke inventory will help your interior design make your personal preference and the ambiance in your home enjoyable for you and your guests.

Are you tired of the concrete jungle? How many times have you wished you could see more greenery than just the trees on the sidewalk? We don’t have to move out to the forest and live in log cabins to experience nature. There are plenty of opportunities to make our lives just a little greener without sacrificing the modern convenience of our cities, even if we are surrounded by tall, ugly buildings. Mother Nature can appear even in the meanest of urban sprawls.

Go For a Stroll

Take weekly walks in parks to recharge your batteries. If your city is big enough to be far away from real nature it should have a pretty big park or two. Even ten or fifteen minutes a week can make a difference. The flora and fauna that you find in the park, along with the people walking their dogs, can make you forget pretty quickly that skyscrapers are waiting just ten meters away. Bring your bicycle or roller skates to speed around, taking in fresh air as you do it. If you can afford to spend a whole day at your local park, bring a picnic basket and a few sandwiches for a getaway lunch.

Bring Nature Inside

If you do live in a large metropolis the chances are that you live in a tiny apartment. Even in a small apartment however you can still bring nature inside it by starting an indoor garden. If you can get any kind of sunlight, growing a small, hardy potted plant is fairly easy. If not you can always go with a cactus or something similar. Cacti grow in almost any condition and need little attention but aren’t any less green than any other plant and even a little greenery can help make a significant difference. If you are lucky enough to have a balcony, you can grow an impressive vertical garden on the railing with virtually anything you want. Keep a spray bottle handy in case the sun is particularly bright and dries up your plants.

Make the Most of Your Garden

If you are fortunate enough then you may have a garden to take advantage of and with a little imagination you could create your very own natural oasis. Water features will help to make your garden feel more natural and you could have something like a waterfall to make you garden more aesthetically pleasing or maybe a pond to encourage more wildlife to make your garden their home.

Garden sized log cabins could also make a rustic looking summer house that will help you to get closer to nature when the weather is fine. Your garden doesn’t have to be a place for the summer though as if you choose the right foliage and garden furniture it could be enjoyed in the colder months also. You could even try converting your log cabins into a bird-watching house in the winter in the hope of spotting any of the more interesting variety of winged visitor that may make a stop in your garden.

As temperatures drop and winter storms become mere memories, it becomes time to get your car out of the garage and look forward to breezy drives with the windows rolled down. But what can you do with your garage space during months when it’s no longer necessary to keep your car stowed to protect it against snow and ice? Take inspiration from one church music minister in Charlottesville, Virginia who turned an unused garage into a performance space that’s now a community favorite.

A Worthwhile Venture

A few years ago, musician Sam Bush launched his garage-turned-performance space with the idea of creating a place where community members could go to indulge in both local and national art forms. Aptly known as The Garage, it takes a bare-bones approach with stark brick walls and only enough room for a single car, back when it served its original purpose.

Several nights per week, people gather outside the building or perch on an overlooking hill and enjoy tunes from touring artists. During each performance, there are usually at least two musicians who play. Between each set, Bush passes around a glass jar, and attendees are encouraged to pay what they can. All proceeds go to support the artists. According to an article on Three Notched, a Charlottesville blog, the building is owned by neighboring Christ Episcopal Church, but there are no signs of religious affiliations in the events hosted there.

Besides being home to musical events The Garage often hosts art openings, too. Admission is always free. Sometimes, refreshments are served, too. This past December, Bush and dozens of community members practiced seasonal carols in The Garage and then took their voices to the surrounding area of Charlottesville, often venturing into restaurants and stopping to chat with passersby. To get everyone in the mood for caroling, Bush set out a tray of cookies, and more importantly, a thermos of steaming cocoa, which really hit the spot, especially since winters in Virginia tend to be chilly, and The Garage is usually a warm weather venue.

Doing It Yourself

Now, The Garage is a staple on Charlottesville’s cultural landscape, and if you’re intrigued by the idea, there’s no reason why you couldn’t do something similar. The key is having your heart in the right place. Rather than seeking to be profitable, aim to boost your community’s art scene, instead. It would be very difficult, and maybe even illegal, to attempt to make a lot of money through events in your backyard. It also may attract the attention of authorities. In Bush’s case, he makes sure that all events end by about 10pm to comply with noise ordinances.

If you’re not ready to book bands in your space, take a simpler approach and use the building as a showcase for nearby children to put on plays or hang artwork they’ve done during a day at school. When people get word of what you’re doing the events should promote themselves.

Finally, don’t forget to keep people as comfortable as possible, whether that means audience members or performers. Temperatures can be easily managed with help from appliances like a ductless mini split air conditioner. These work well for garage spaces and other small buildings. They are cost-effective and install easily along a wall, so they won’t take up too much space. Set out a few couches or comfortable chairs, as well. In minutes, you’ll have set up a space that feels like home and could play a huge part in nurturing artistic ventures.

Look into the various brands types such as the Friedrich air conditioner and the mini split ac.

Every contractor needs to have a website to promote their business. That’s just a fact of life in the modern world.

Your website might seem to be a funny place to look for ways to reduce environmental impact. After all, websites and web hosts aren’t exactly associated with belching toxins into the air to begin with.

However, web hosting companies use electricity like anyone else, and that electricity does have a carbon impact. That means that choosing the right web hosting company can be another way to reduce your own businesses’ carbon footprint.

As it is, a lot of web hosting companies do claim to be green, or carbon-neutral. This is often offered as a major selling point for their hosting services. Web hosts like Host Gator, Tiger Technologies, and Dreamhost all make it a point to push their carbon neutrality as a major reason to do business with them.

It’s easy to take their word for it. But what do web hosting companies really mean when they say they’re carbon neutral?

Usually, web hosts mean that they’re choosing green methods for generating energy that their business uses. Many have chosen to run their operations on wind power. Some have even gone so far as to generate their own solar power. And some handle the problem by purchasing carbon offsets or by investing in green energy sources. A few use a mix of all of these methods.

Some offices go even greener. They allow employees to telecommute, stay paperless, and may even plant trees on your behalf when you buy a website with them.

Many web hosting companies also seek to reduce their energy output. Some do this by purchasing Energy Star servers, computers, monitors, and printers. All Energy Star appliances and electronics use less energy than their unrated counterparts, and this is a pretty big step.

Some green web hosts also give you ways to make them a selling point for your own business. Fat Cow, for example, will give you a green badge to display on your website which shows off the fact that you’ve chosen a website that’s 100% wind powered. If customers seek you out specifically because you are a green contractor this can help you strengthen your brand.

How much of an impact are all of these green hosting services having? Tiger Technologies has self-reported its energy use as follows: 25,000 kWh/year, 850 therms of natural gas per year, generating 20 tons of CO2 per year.

That means even one web hosting company’s decision to go carbon-neutral makes a pretty big impact on emissions. The fact that the vast majority of these web hosting companies are doing so is a big positive.

However, if you want to be as green as possible it’s a good idea to check how the web hosting company is calculating its carbon neutrality. Some take everything into account, even direct emissions.

Others only estimate the carbon costs of the websites they run, and nothing more. Drupology, for example, estimates that each website generates less than 0.01 tons of CO2 per year, and so planting one tree for each website should be enough to attain carbon neutrality. The effort may be admirable, but the math seems to be a bit off.

Fortunately, most “green” web hosting companies do take the time to explain their approach, which allows you to make informed decisions about who will get your business.

Today, many manufacturers recognize the demand for eco-friendly building materials. Alternatives to new wood decks are becoming very popular, offering consumers more options than ever before. Choosing sustainable or recyclable materials ensures you are doing your part for the environment while providing your family with a new deck to enjoy for many years to come.

Green Building Materials

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, using recycled wood and composite wood building materials are the best options for homeowners building a deck. Composite wood is made of a combination of recycled wood and plastics to create a long lasting material that uses fewer natural resources than new wood. Composite wood is also comparable in price to traditional materials such as cedar and pine. As an additional bonus, composite wood is made with plastic so it is durable enough for outdoor use without applying chemicals to the exterior of the wood so that it won’t rot or warp when exposed to the elements.

Composite wood is a better choice than reclaimed wood for several reasons. According to Green America, pressure treated wood made before 1995 contains arsenic that can leach into the surrounding environment. Because arsenic leaches into the ground and water sources around the deck, if you do use reclaimed wood you will need to seal each piece of lumber with an eco-friendly sealant to keep the chemicals inside the wood. If you have a source for reclaimed wood that can confirm the materials weren’t pressure treated and the type of wood — redwood, cedar or some types of tropical hardwood — is right for outdoor use, then reclaimed wood can be an excellent option for building a green deck.

Sustainable New Wood

Sustainable wood sources provide you with new lumber that is sustainably grown and harvested. Sustainable wood is certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council in the United States, and in Canada. New wood needs to be treated in order to be used for decking materials. Make sure that you opt for a wood that is naturally weather resistant instead of buying pressure treated wood, which can contain harmful chemicals. The Vermont Department of Health recommends opting for cedar because it is long lasting even in severe climates.

Some types of FSC certified wood would need to be treated with a sealant to promote durability. Choosing the right sealant is important if you want to maintain the eco-friendliness of your deck. Green America recommends using a sealant that is low in volatile organic compounds, and opting for a sealant that is water based to minimize your exposure to chemicals. Composite materials have the advantage of being designed to resist damage from the elements, allowing you to skip the step of sealing your deck.

Getting Started

Choosing the right materials for your green deck is the first step in building your new home addition. Your personal preferences are the first thing to consider, along with your budget. Some materials may cost slightly more than others and composite decks do have a slightly different aesthetic than real wood decks. Additionally, not everyone is comfortable opting for plastic or vinyl over sustainable or recycled wood. Try visiting a local lumber vendor that has both options in stock to compare prices and the overall look of each option available to decide which choice will work best for your family.

Today we are all talking about Global Warming and are worried about its effects. As a matter of fact, if we keep exploiting the earth at our present rate, our generations might not be able to cherish the beauty of the world we know. We cannot leave a dull and polluted world for them. We need to inculcate a greener approach today, so that we can save a brighter world for their future.

Our main focus should be on educating our children to have an eco –friendly approach towards life. Home, no doubt is the first school of any child. But they become more aware about the outside world when they start learning at school. Therefore, it is here that we can strongly make them realize the importance of saving the environment, and the negative impacts of global warming. Besides, we must also participate and help the school’s effort in making our child learn the greener way.

As parents even you can make all this possible and it all begins with:

Going Green To School -Rather than driving your kids to school, make them walk, if the school is really at a walking distance. Children can also take school buses or use local transport. You can even opt for carpools. Encourage your grown-up kids to take a bicycle ride to school.

Going Green In The Classroom

An individual uses 200 kg of paper on an average. We must educate our children to reuse paper, especially for rough work or class room notes. Ask them to use both sides of paper. Make it mandatory for them not to waste paper. Educate them about the importance of taking printouts only when it is utmost necessary for any project or submission. Ask your kids to mention to their teachers to refill and reuse the cartridges rather than throwing them into the bin.

Recycle Points

Make it a point to mention in the school to have recycle points at every corner of the school. Make them aware of the articles which can go into the recycling bin. It then becomes the duty of school management to make sure they make proper use of these recycling points. They must also make sure that their cleaning staff empties these recycling points on a timely basis, and hand the garbage to the right recycling points.

Pack A No Waste Lunch

Instead of giving your kids lunch in disposables, you must pack their lunch in reusable steel or glass containers. Reusable cloth bags can be preferred over plastic or deposable bags. Instead of buying water bottles give them water bottles from home. If you are using plastic bottles then reuse them.

Start a Garden In the School

Schools must have garden where pupils are allowed to grow things, work with the soil and where they can come closer to nature. Also ask the school to set up a worm bin to turn it into compost and use them for green project or sell them.

Awareness on recycle and reuse

Parents and teachers should make their pupil aware of recycling and reusing. They should know about things that pose a threat to the environment and things that can be recycled. This practice should become a habit for them.

All material from shoes, clothes, bags and furniture can be reused. Wasting and throwing is much easier, but has more adverse effects. Teach your kids that removal of unwanted stuff should be planned. They can always make use of self storage services to store items that may be required later. Sometimes these companies also give the facility of buying your used stuff for some value to be resold again.

List out all practical ways that can be used to make a greener change, go to teachers and share your ideas and let your child open up to more of these green ideas. Such an overwhelming awareness requires time, but it will help save mother Earth for the future.

Does your home office suck? The answer is “yes” if it is dull, boring and distracting enough to make you unproductive. When you are working from home, there are ways to make your home office a comfortable place to be. Follow these five tips to turn your office from ho-hum to extraordinary.

1. Color

Method, the popular cleaning product company, recently moved into new office space in a historic section of San Francisco. What makes their space so special? Pops of color amid an all-white interior. The space, designed by the firm Garcia Tamjidi, includes beautifully-shaped desks and tables decorated with shades of aqua and spicy reds. You can do the same in your home office. Instead of forcing yourself to work in a bland environment, choose colorful accessories to liven up the space.

2. Light

Nothing makes an office more draining to the human mind than a lack of light. If you have the capability, let the natural light shine through. If you don’t have large windows in your home office space, choose incandescent lighting instead of fluorescent. Fluorescent light is irritating to many people, especially those who have to sit under it for long hours each day.

3. Paint

If stark white walls aren’t your thing, do a bit of research into the psychology of colors. Paint your walls with colors that will enhance productivity, not dampen it. Choosing colors that are too relaxing or too stimulating can be counterproductive. Pick lighter shades if your office is small in order to open it up. If your office is large, on the other hand, medium to dark hues can make it feel cozier. If you have a tough time deciding, neutral colors are always safe; color can be added through accessories.

4. Furniture

Ergonomic furniture is always the best choice for any home office. Functional, ergonomic furniture will keep you from being forced to deal with sore muscles and a stiff neck at the end of the day. Look for chairs that are supportive to the back and desks that are built to the proper height for the task at hand. If you don’t have the money to buy brand new furniture, look for pillows and other supports that can be added to the furniture you already own.

5. Life

In a study conducted by Texas A&M University, both men and women were shown to have more innovative thinking and enhanced problem solving when working in an environment that included plants. If you don’t have any life in your home office other than yourself, consider adding plants or freshly cut flowers. If you don’t have enough natural light to support flowers, consider installing an aquarium or even a pet Beta fish for your desk.

Your office doesn’t have to sap your energy. If you pay attention to how you decorate, your office can easily be transformed into a place that you love to spend time in. Following the tips above are guaranteed to make your space a more productive place to be.

Utilizing green practices go beyond that of recycling paper and plastics and is quickly branching into the building and construction industry. Architects and engineers are constantly learning new ways to create residential and commercial structures that are environmentally friendly, and that includes the creation of a green roof.

What is a green roof?

There are a couple of ways of approaching a green roofing system. The first way is by incorporating green building materials in order to create a LEED certified roofing structure. LEED certifications ensure the building structures are environmentally friendly, qualify for tax rebates, have low costs for operation, have high values, have low emissions, are safe for occupants, and are conservative. The second way of approaching a green roof is by planting vegetation directly on to the roof in order to improve air quality, provide a natural insulating barrier, and reduce energy costs.

Is going green the best option?

Some consumers opt out of going green for their roofing repair because they fear it is a more costly venture. However, the rising popularity of green roofs has made them comparable to traditional roofing materials. Not only that, but the added benefits add up to long term savings:

A higher asset value contributes to a higher resale value of the home.

Lower energy costs translate to more money in the consumer’s pocket.

Higher insulation values translate to yet more dollar savings.

Improved air quality contributes to the occupant’s overall health.

What if planting is not an option because the roof is not flat?

Even if the homeowner, or business owner for that matter, does not have a flat roof it is still possible to have a green roof. Eco-roofs are possible on a pitched roof, as well, in order to create a waterproof barrier allowing for optimal drainage and irrigation. Depending on how much maintaining the structure’s owner is willing to do, they can choose from an intensive and an extensive green roof.

What is the difference between intensive and extensive green roofing?

Intensive green roofs: this roofing material is heavy and is able to support thicker vegetation and wildlife. This roofing option requires more maintenance either by the structure’s owner or by a roofing contractor.

Extensive green roofs: this roofing material is a thinner layer of plant vegetation and requires far less maintenance. Both roofing options provide insulation, rainwater absorption, improved air quality to all surrounding structures, and habitats for wildlife.

Consumers cannot help worrying about the higher initial costs to utilizing green roofing strategies during the initial build or during repairs. While this is a legitimate concern, particularly during tough economic times touching the lives of so many across the United States, consumers should keep in mind the on-going costs are minimal. This is especially true for those who are using a LEED certified green roof or an extensive green roof.

The bottom line:

When determining whether an eco-roof or a LEED certified green roof is the right choice for the structure, create a budget first. Look at the initial costs in addition to long-term expenses for a traditional roof versus a green roof. Create a cost comparison chart to help weigh all the options. Once this comparison is complete, hold honest discussions with others who have gone green to learn of their experiences. This will provide opportunity to add to the lists of pro’s and con’s being generated during the decision making period.
