It seems there is some confusion with people we speak to in relation to Green Power and Renewable Energy. The difference between Green Energy or ‘Green Power’ as it is referred to in Australia, and non accredited renewable energy is simple: Green Energy comes from a source discovered or built after 1997, non accredited renewable was built before 1997. Green Power is affectively a brand name, endorsed by the government.  This brand name was created to encourage new sources of Green Energy to be developed.  By
carrying the Green Power logo, business such as electricity retailers can market themselves as being ‘Green’.  So even though non-accredited renewable energy sources, like the Snowy Hydro Dam, create no greenhouse gasses, they still can not carry the green power logo, or be considered to be ‘Green Energy’- because the dam was built prior to 1997- the year the Green Power Scheme was introduced.  If you need any further clarification on what is a confusing issue, submit your details or call Green Energy Watch.
