Hi All,

It seems there is some confusion with people we speak to in relation to Green Power and Renewable Energy. The difference between Green Energy or ‘Green Power’ as it is referred to in Australia, and non accredited renewable energy is simple: Green Energy comes from a source discovered or built after 1997, non accredited renewable was built before 1997. Green Power is affectively a brand name, endorsed by the government. This brand name was created to encourage new sources of Green Energy to be developed. By
carrying the Green Power logo, business such as electricity retailers can market themselves as being ‘Green’. So even though non-accredited renewable energy sources, like the Snowy Hydro Dam, create no greenhouse gasses, they still can not carry the green power logo, or be considered to be ‘Green Energy’- because the dam was built prior to 1997- the year the Green Power Scheme was introduced. If you need any further clarification on what is a confusing issue, submit your details or call Green Energy Watch. They love explaining this stuff!

Welcome to the first Green Energy Watch blog! Green Energy Watch is a new initiative to educate the public on making the right decision when choosing a new electricity supplier. We recently had a free light bulb give-away which was an enormous success in raising awareness about saving energy, and the importance of choosing green energy when switching electricity suppliers. What most people don’t know is that when they buy green energy off the major electricity retailers in Australia (like AGL, Orign, TRU) their product is only a certain percentage “green”. The remaining percentage is black energy, sourced from coal burning. This is why we started our website, to educate people on the differences between 10% and 100% Green, green power versus renewable and the benefits of solar power and wind technologies. Our site is constantly being updated, so if you have any interesting green energy facts, or even if you have a question about our site- Submit your details at greenenergywatch.com.au or even post a blog!
