Development grants awarded to select teams for feature-length film projects focusing on environmental topics

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (June 22, 2016) – Today The Redford Center announced the launch of Redford Center Grants, a program that will provide grant funds, mentorship opportunities, and networking support to filmmakers who understand the power of a well-told, well-timed story as a means to inspire positive change in the world.

Funded by The New York Community Trust, the Redford Center Grants pilot program will support feature-length film projects in early development that are focused on driving awareness, education and tangible action on a variety of environmental topics.

“New ideas and information must become stories that touch the human heart in order to change things,” said Jamie Redford, Co-Founder of The Redford Center. “It’s in these early stages of the filmmaking process when funds are often most difficult to secure, and when these teams of storytellers can benefit most from mentorship, story support, and making the right connections.”

Five filmmaking teams will be chosen to participate in the pilot program in which each team will receive:

Ø A $15,000 development grant to produce a written film treatment and a short proof-of-concept film over a 3-month timeframe

Ø Mentorship from issue experts and industry leaders to refine project narratives and impact goals

Ø A GoPro Hero 4 Black camera to support filmmaking

Ø Film distribution as part of The Redford Center Grants programs’ series of shorts

Ø A travel and lodging grant to attend a Story Development Summit at the Sundance Mountain Resort

Ø An opportunity to be considered for co-production with The Redford Center, and/or to receive an additional production grant

Supports Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's call to increase investment in climate projects

GENEVA and LOS ANGELES - 26 May, 2016 - Following the April signing of the Paris Agreement, R20 Regions of Climate Action "R20" and Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation "LDF" announced the formation of a new partnership to rapidly identify and fund projects that address the urgency of climate change.

Financially supported by LDF under a new $650,000 grant, this partnership allows R20 to rapidly identify renewable energy, energy efficiency and waste management initiatives that have the potential to bring positive environmental and social benefits to communities across the globe, and ultimately reduce carbon emissions. Under this framework, R20 will develop and construct these projects, as well as measure and report on their impact.

Together, R20 and LDF are following the mission of the Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance"CCFLA," which was launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2014 to encourage investment in low-emission, climate resilient infrastructure in cities, and to close the investment gap in climate friendly projects in urban areas over 15 years.

"I commend LDF and R20 for supporting the goals of the CCFLA. Partnerships like this one strengthen the effort to unlock billions of dollars of private investment in projects that will urgently address climate change," said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. "I thank them for their commitment to our environment, and to the future of humanity."

"The Paris Agreement was an important first step for reducing global carbon emissions, but there is more that must be done to accomplish this important goal. Our partnership with R20 is a signal that it is also the responsibility of private organizations to take up the charge of accelerating the adoption of climate-saving technologies, worldwide," said Leonardo DiCaprio, Chairman of Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. "We call on others to follow our lead because our planet is quickly running out of time."

R20 was founded to support governments and communities in the identification, preparation and financing of green projects to lower greenhouse gas emissions and help the world transition to a green economy.

"R20 and LDF share an unwavering commitment to taking bold action on climate change by supporting proven solutions that will impact real change for our planet," said Christophe Nuttall, Executive Director of R20. "With the support of our partners at LDF, we will help set a model for CCFLA members, governments and organizations to take action to develop their own climate solutions in all parts of the globe."

COP21: Schwarzenegger addresses the UN climate deal negotiators

Monday December 7, 2015. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger addressed the negotiators today at the UNFCCC Paris Climate Conference during a session on cities and regional climate action. Schwarzenegger, an ardent advocate for the empowerment of subnational governments in tackling climate change, emphasized the crucial role that cities and regions play in advancing the low-carbon economy.

"No matter what you (negotiators) do, do not forget the power of subnational governments. 70 percent of emissions can be controlled with state and local policies. Cities and states hold tremendous power and we must never forget it," said Mr. Schwarzenegger.

Recognizing subnational action in the climate deal will ensure that local governments are given the support they need to implement their climate change mitigation plans, and that national emissions targets are met. According to Scaling Up: Local to Global Climate Action, a new report released at COP21:

"Rajasthan's installed solar capacity is the largest among all the states in India, accounting for more than one-quarter of the country's total. If Rajasthan's rate of solar energy expansion were scaled to the national level, India's carbon dioxide emissions would decrease by approximately 19 percent of the nation's total carbon dioxide emissions in 2012."

Egis and R20 sign a partnership agreement for sustainable waste management

Saturday 5 December, 2015. Paris. R20 has signed an agreement with the international consulting and engineering firm, Egis, a branch of the Caisse des Depots, to create a Pre-Investment Fund (PIF) for waste management projects. The Fund will support the different actors of sustainable waste management (national and local governments, industry and investors) in their decision-making processes necessary to implementing infrastructure projects.

The signing took place in the presence of Christophe Nuttall, Executive Director of R20; Terry Tammimen, Strategic Advisor to the R20; Pierre-René Lemas, CEO of Caisse des Dépôts; Nicolas Jachiet, CEO of Egis; and Craig Cogut, CEO of Pegasus Capital Advisors (a US-based private equity firm). In parallel with the COP 21 agreement, this partnership focuses on developing "Waste to Energy" projects in emerging countries. The pre-investment funds will enable Egis and R20 to bring to maturity the waste management market in emerging and developing countries. Read more.

Schwarzenegger talks climate communications at Sciences Po

Monday December 7, 2015. In a bold address to the faculty and students of Sciences Po, France's leading political science institute, Gov. Schwarzenegger called on climate communicators to shift awareness raising efforts away from spelling future doomsday scenarios, to present-day dangers that are affecting humanity now.

"We are wired through thousands of years of evolution to focus on the here and now on survival. Our over-use of fossil fuels impacts us right now. The fumes from dirty energy are killing us. We cannot accept 7 million premature deaths every year with a clear conscience.

We want to be cutting edge. We know that a green economy is a growing and smart economy. That's the story we have to tell," stated Mr Schwarzenegger.

R20 holds General Assembly meeting

Monday December 7, 2015. R20 held its Governing Board and General Assembly meetings at its new R20 Paris office in Champs Elysees. The meetings, presided by R20 President Michele Sabban, gathered over 30 R20 members and partners coming from regions around the world.

The Governing Board and General Assembly members unanimously re-elected Michele Sabban as President of R20.

R20 Executive Director Christophe Nuttall used these examples to demonstrate R20's successful business model over the past 3 years of bringing together decision makers, technical expertise, financial partners and investors, thereby enabling the deployment of projects on the ground. In particular, Dr. Nuttall highlighted R20's ability to leverage millions of dollars for investments in projects, first by using seed funding to build Pre-Investment Facilities, which in turn provide funding for project development, and then by attracting the appropriate investments to implement the projects. Over the next 5 years, R20 will harness its resources to scale up the projects through its Green Investment Accelerator Fund, that will deploy billions of US dollars in investments. Read more.

A new agreement was signed between Ms.Sabban and Ms. Linyu Wang, President of Hawaii LED LLC, representing Feilo Acoustics Ltd, to establish a R20 Pre-Investment Facility for the installation of one billion LED streetlights in hundreds of cities across the world.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 748 million people lack access to uncontaminated drinking water sources. Moreover, WHO estimates that 1.8 billion people use a fecally contaminated drinking water source, 2.5 billion lack access to improved sanitation facilities and more than 840,000 people die from water related diseases annually.

Contaminated water is the number one cause of death in developing countries, causing diseases such as cholera, hepatitis, typhoid fever, malaria, ascariasis, dengue fever and many other deadly illnesses. In fact, contaminated water is the number one public health concern globally based on its impact to society, according to the WHO. Fortunately, the WHO estimates that 10% of the global disease burden could be prevented with improved water supply and sanitation. He is the patron saint of all who study and work in the area of ecology, and he is also much loved by non-Christians. He was particularly concerned for God's creation and for the poor and outcast. He loved, and was deeply loved for his joy, his generous self-giving, his openheartedness. He was a mystic and a pilgrim who lived in simplicity and in wonderful harmony with God, with others, with nature and with himself. He shows us just how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace.

Governor Brown Issues Executive Order to Further Expedite Oil Spill Recovery Efforts in Santa Barbara County

SACRAMENTO - As federal, state, and local agencies continue working to minimize and mitigate the effects of last month's Santa Barbara County oil spill, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued an executive order to further expedite recovery efforts and help ensure the natural environment is restored, beaches are reopened and economic impacts are minimized.

The Governor's order directs state agencies responsible for cleanup and restoration to take all necessary steps to issue emergency waivers and permits to facilitate the reopening of fishing, public access, and impacted beaches and waters, including Refugio State Beach and El Capitan State Beach, and waives the waiting period for unemployment insurance for those workers affected by the oil spill.

The Governor also directs the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Office of Spill Prevention and Response to continue working with other federal, state, and local agencies to clean up and mitigate the impacts of the oil spill and to hold the responsible parties accountable for environmental and fiscal damages.

The Governor's May 20, 2015 proclamation along with today's executive order advance a combined effort across federal, state and local agencies, tribal governments, local volunteers, conservation and environmental organizations, and citizens to deal with the effects of this substantial spill along an iconic stretch of California's remarkable coastline.

EXECUTIVE ORDER B-31-15

WHEREAS on May 20, 2015, I proclaimed a state of emergency to exist as a result of a pipeline rupture causing a significant release of oil and potentially other hazardous substances into the Pacific Ocean near Refugio State Beach located in Santa Barbara County; and

WHEREAS numerous state agencies and departments have been deployed to the impacted areas to respond to and mitigate the damage of the oil spill; and

WHEREAS those agencies and departments, joined by federal and local agencies and local volunteers, have worked tirelessly to contain the spill and to minimize and

mitigate its effects on the environment, fisheries, wildlife, and the local economy; and

WHEREAS notwithstanding the best efforts of the state, federal, and local agencies and many volunteers, the oil spill has had a tremendous impact on the environment, resulting in the loss of marine mammals, birds, and fish that will continue long into the future; and

WHEREAS Refugio State Beach and El Capitan State Beach have been closed due to the unsafe conditions created by the spill; and

WHEREAS fisheries are closed resulting in 138 square miles of ocean being closed to commercial fishing causing significant damage to this industry; and

WHEREAS local governments and businesses along the Santa Barbara County Coast will continue to suffer economic impacts from this oil spill; and

WHEREAS emergency operations are now focused on restoring the impacted areas, but expedited efforts are still needed to restore the environment, reopen the beaches, and minimize economic impacts; and

WHEREAS under the provisions of section 8558(b) of the California Government Code, I find that conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property continue to exist due to the oil spill in the County of Santa Barbara; and

WHEREAS under the provisions of section 8571 of the California Government Code, I find that strict compliance with the statutes specified in this order would prevent, hinder, or delay the mitigation of the effects of the oil spill.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, in accordance with the authority vested in me by the Constitution and statutes of the State of California, and in particular, sections 8567 and 8571 of the California Government Code, do hereby issue the following orders to become effective immediately:

IT IS HEREBY ORDERED THAT:

The provisions of the May 20, 2015 Proclamation declaring a State of Emergency remain in full force and effect, except as modified herein.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Office of Spill Prevention and Response shall continue working with other federal, state, and local agencies to take appropriate actions to clean up and mitigate the impacts of the oil spill and to hold the responsible parties accountable for the cleanup and mitigation of the environmental and fiscal impacts of the oil spill.
The provisions of section 1253 of the Unemployment Insurance Code imposing a one-week waiting period for unemployment insurance applicants are waived as to all applicants who are unemployed as a direct result of the oil spill, who apply for unemployment insurance benefits during the time period beginning May 20, 2015 and ending on the close of business on November 20, 2015, and who are otherwise eligible for unemployment insurance benefits in California.
Because emergency efforts are now focused on restoration, paragraph 5 of the May 20, 2015 Proclamation, suspending chapter 7 of division 20 of the Public Resources Code, is hereby revoked. Subject to the primary authority of the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Office of Spill Prevention and Response administrator for oil spill response under the Lempert-Keene-Seastrand Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act, and specifically sections 8670.5 and 8670.7 of the Government Code, all agencies, including the Coastal Commission pursuant to its authority under section 30600(e) of the Public Resources Code, with notice to and coordination with the administrator, shall take all necessary steps to issue on an emergency basis any necessary waivers or permits to facilitate the reopening of fishing, public access, and impacted beaches and waters, including Refugio State Beach and El Capitan State Beach.
Paragraph 8 of the May 20, 2015 Proclamation, suspending Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District Rule 326, is hereby revoked as it is no longer necessary for restoration efforts.

This Executive Order is not intended to, and does not, create any rights or benefits, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity, against the State of California, its agencies, departments, entities, officers, employees, or any other person.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this fifth day of June 2015.

Race For Water Reaches The Bermudas

The "Race for Water Odyssey" reaches the Bermudas and continues its scientific analyses

The Race for Water Odyssey (R4WO) arrived today in Bermuda, the second witness island of the expedition. The crew will stay on the British Archipelago for 6 days in order to collect scientific data, enabling an initial global assessment of ocean pollution caused by plastic waste.

After 7 days of turbulent navigation from the Azores due to the passing of a very lively weather front, the R4WO drew up, this Wednesday April 1st, in Hamilton. Present in Bermuda until April 5th, the expedition team will analyze the waste littering 6 strictly-selected beaches of the archipelago. In order to obtain comparable data, these analyses will be carried out according to the same scientific protocol as the one deployed in the Azores, working with local associations such as "Keep Bermuda Beautiful". In addition, visits of the "MOD70 Race for Water" trimaran will be organized for the public. During this stopover, the R4WO benefits from the support of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel.

Next stop: New York

The R4WO will finish its crossing of the Atlantic by then setting off for New York, next stage in its world tour. In the megalopolis, several events will be organized to raise awareness and to draw the public's attention to the problem of plastic waste in oceans. The R4WO will have the honour, amongst others, to talk about this crucial theme during a plenary session organized at the UN headquarters in collaboration with the UNEP.

Initiated by the Race for Water foundation, the "Race for Water Odyssey" is a unique expedition that aims to draw up the first global assessment of plastic pollution in the ocean by visiting island beaches situated in the 5 trash vortexes. In less than 300 days, over 40,000 nautical miles will be traveled, punctuated by 11 scientific stopovers and 9 outreach stopovers, involving a total of 13 countries. Climate-KIC will be present at the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) World Congress on 8 April in Seoul, Republic of Korea, to officially launch the Low Carbon City Lab programme and discuss new partnerships with cities and organisations from around the world.

Greenhouse gas emissions in cities originate from a host of different sources, such as electricity production, transportation, commercial and residential buildings, as well as industry and waste. Reducing urban emissions is a shared effort by a large panel of city stakeholders.
The new programme is part of a range of Climate-KIC programmes designed to help cities reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create new jobs for their low carbon economies. Climate-KIC is the European Union's main climate innovation initiative and supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

Cities account for 70 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities

PARIS, FRANCE, 31 March 2015 – With all eyes on a global deal to reduce greenhouse gasses at the UN's COP21 conference in Paris later this year, EU initiative Climate-KIC will launch a new programme to help cities around the world unlock their emission reduction potential at a major global event in Seoul on 8 April 2015.

Cities account for 70 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities. According to the United Nations agency for human settlements and sustainable urban development, 75 per cent of the world population will be living in urban environments by 2050. The annual increase of the total world population is 1 per cent, while in the urban areas it is 1.8 per cent, almost twice as much. Cities will continue to be the key nexus for climate action for years to come.

Leveraging a diverse grouping of companies, research centers, technology experts, city networks and cities, Climate-KIC's new Low Carbon City Lab programme will aim to unlock the greenhouse gas emission reduction potential of cities, and reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 1 gigatonne per year.

Strategies to reduce urban greenhouse gas emissions

Thanh-Tam Lê, Director of Climate-KIC's centre in France, said "Our Low Carbon City Lab is an exciting example of how public-private partnerships can tackle climate change through both a market-led and an impact driven approach."

The programme provides a series of tools, consulting and services to develop urban climate mitigation strategies:

3D software to visualise greenhouse gas emissions in cities. We also help cities bring together the data from sources across their urban areas.
Experts to verify greenhouse gas inventories according to the recently launched Greenhouse Gas Protocol standard and to prioritise actions.
Help to boost cities' business generation activities including support for start-ups
Tools enabling the monitoring of emissions from the transport sector.
Services including training and summer schools, with courses focusing on climate finance for cities and the latest developments in greenhouse gas monitoring approaches for cities.
Contribution to the definition of climate finance frameworks for cities (NAMAs, VNAMAs)

There are illustrated pages throughout the book and one of them even teaches you a quick morning massage to really wake you up with a sidebar giving you a recipe for a healthy breakfast. Below, on the same page is a Night Massage to help you sleep well. There is advice to, "from time to time or once a year" do a slimming or firming treatment at the spa.

In short, the book is full of priceless bits of beauty advice and much of it that you can self-administer. And it's all about whole-body beauty, something that has always been at the root of the Clarins philosophy.

Building up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be hosted by France in December 2015 (COP 21-Paris Climate 2015), the Embassies of France in both Canada and the United States are organizing FACTS (French Ameri-Can Climate TalkS), a public conference series across seven cities in the US and in Canada involving renowned scientists, civil society representatives, NGOs, political figures, journalists and entrepreneurs.

Key speakers from both the US and France will be discussing the role of urban centers in regard to climate change policies: from the changing risks they have to face to the new opportunities they can benefit from.

Climate Ready Cities

Taking actions to mitigate climate change and adapt in urban areas

In partnership with the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and the Los Angeles Regional Collaborative (LARC) for Climate Action and Sustainability, the Embassy of France in the United States and the Consulate General of France in Los Angeles will organize a conference to discuss the challenges climate change represents for cities around the world.

With more than half of humanity living in cities, urban centers are key actors for climate change. Climate change represents a major threat for many cities that will have to face a range of impacts from the consequences of the changing climate (sea level rise, increased frequency of extreme weather events, heat waves, etc.). However, the threats brought by climate change can also represent an opportunity and many cities are already taking action to become climate resilient by both decreasing their emissions and by preparing to mitigate the future impacts of climate change.

The newly appointed Executive Director to R20, Christophe Nuttal, takes to the Road To Paris 2015 via both science and human rights. Originally a space engineer, he was then a scientific advisor to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the early 90s. He became the Exec. Dir. of R20 in January 2012.

More recently, he launched the International Multi-Partnerships Initiative on access to basic services, adopted at the 2007 UN-HABITAT Board.

This initiative was adopted later in 2009 at ECOSOC resulting in listing of access to water as a human right in 2011.

(Earth, August 5, 2014) Tuesday, August 12, 2014, is the third annual World Elephant Day, a day when people come together to honor elephants, to spread awareness about the critical threats they are facing, and to support positive solutions that will help ensure their survival. Within our lifetimes, elephants may face global extinction in the wild. World Elephant Day was launched on August 12, 2012, by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and Canadian documentary filmmaker Patricia Sims.

The survival odds for the world's elephants are increasingly grim. During the past four years, poaching for ivory has surged to unprecedented levels. It is estimated that 100 African elephants are slaughtered daily for the illegal wildlife trade. According to a June 2014 report by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), 20 percent of Africa's elephants may be killed in the next ten years if poaching continues at current levels. Others believe that all African elephants may be extinct in the wild by 2025. It is estimated that fewer than 400,000 African elephants remain. There are less than 40,000 Asian elephants left in the world, making their official status "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List. Asian elephants face extensive loss of habitat, and are also killed for their ivory, meat, and body parts, while young elephants are removed from their natural environment for use in the tourism industry.

World Elephant Day supporters can act in a multitude of ways, both locally and globally, to help protect elephants from the devastating impacts of poaching, the destruction of wilderness, the demand for ivory, human population growth and human-elephant conflict, and the social, economic, and environmental factors that fuel this tragic situation.

World Elephant Day encourages individuals and organizations worldwide to take action, spread awareness, and share effective ways to help save and protect elephants, and support the many commendable elephant conservation initiatives.

What you can do

There are many ways people can get involved to help elephants and raise awareness on World Elephant Day, and year-round.

Support organizations that are working to: stop the illegal poaching and trade of elephant ivory and other wildlife products; protect wild elephant habitat; and provide sanctuaries and alternative habitats for domesticated elephants to live freely.
If you wish to experience elephants in their natural environment, choose eco-tourism operators who support local elephant conservation projects and who treat elephants with respect and dignity.
Support healthy, alternative, sustainable livelihoods for people who have traditionally relied on elephants, wild animals, and natural resources.
Support orphaned elephants by fostering one whose parents have been killed by poachers.
Learn about indigenous cultures that have traditionally lived in harmony with elephants.
Be an elephant-aware consumer. Never buy ivory or other wildlife products.
Support a U.S. national ban on the sale of ivory. Contact your representatives and write to your country's leaders, supporting national and local legislation to ban the sale of ivory.

What organizations are doing on World Elephant Day

Conservation Action Trust, Wilderness Safaris, and Africa Geographic are holding a photography competition for the best African elephant photo, with the grand prize of a four-day trip in Kruger National Park.
96 Elephants is celebrating World Elephant Day with a variety of activities, including having zoos throughout the U.S. sending some 96,000 messages to legislators in support of an ivory ban. 96 Elephants is asking people to take "elphies" using the phrase "Go Grey for World Elephant Day" and to post images on social media using the hashtag #GoGrey. 96 Elephants is also organizing a "Thunderclap" where people can sign up on Twitter to send a simultaneous Tweet on World Elephant Day. During the day, @TheWCS and @96Elephants will tweet out 96 facts about elephants (one every 15 minutes). To learn more about 96 Elephants and World Elephant Day, visit 96elephants.org\WED.
In August the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is launching an exclusive website focused on the beauty of elephants and packed full of ways for people to take action for elephants on August 12 and beyond. Keep an eye on sheldrickwildlifetrust.org and facebook.com/thedswt for more news about the site.
Bodhi Tree Foundation's S.A.F.E. Campaign will be celebrating World Elephant Day by showcasing unique African travel itineraries and safaris offered by several of its travel partners, enabling travelers to get up close and personal with elephants in the wild while aiding in their conservation. Its partners will be contributing a portion of the proceeds to the S.A.F.E. Campaign while offering additional special promotions on World Elephant Day. In South Africa, Save the Elephants is constructing a gigantic cardboard elephant and holding a raffle for a beautiful elephant photograph.
Thirty U.S. zoos, including the El Paso Zoo and the Toledo Zoo, will hold World Elephant Day events, and 42 zoos will deliver petitions and kids' drawings to their state's governors, asking them to act to protect elephants.

Each and every year in Brazil the population awaits its annual açai berry harvest with bated breath. It's akin to the yearly Beaujolais harvest in France. A time of year filled with celebration and abundance.

The açai berry has been inching its way into the North American mainstream for at least a decade now. Hailed as a little berry packing a powerfully healthy punch, we first welcomed it in smoothies and nutrition bars.

Indeed some of the properties of the mythical açai berry are :

Health Properties Of The Açai Berry

For centuries this berry has been used for its health properties by the local Abaetetuba community in the northern Brazilian state of Pará.

The whole of Brazil has embraced the açai berry since many decades for more than its medicinal uses, however. Indeed the culture celebrates the annual harvest by making candies, sweets, and other delicacies out of the dark purple, pulpy and fruity berry.

Easy Ways To Green Your Life

Going green in your life doesn't mean you have to make massive changes. Some of the greenest things you can do are the small ones. Making everyday changes to your life is easy to put into place one small step at a time. Here are some simple ways you can make your life greener and more eco-friendly:

1. Shop Seasonally and Locally – When you buy your food it is easy to pick the brands and products you are familiar with. However if you think about it many of these items must be shipped a long way to get to your grocery store's shelves. Instead, why not pick up some locally grown or made foods. Not only are they usually cheaper because of a reduction in shipping costs but they are also better for you and for the environment. Buying locally grown or made food means fewer carbon emissions from transportation. It also supports the local economy. Not only that, but produce that is grown locally is also grown seasonally meaning it is better for you and tastes better too. Eating seasonally helps you to keep a variety in your diet and you can even try new foods that you may fall in love with. It is also cheaper to buy foods in season.

2. Go Back to the Basics of Cleaning – In the old days there were not a lot of cleaning products on the market. Basic items like vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, backing soda and pine oils were about your only selections. Today you can embrace the classics and clean green with these same items. Instead of polluting the environment and your home with noxious chemicals, stay clean and healthy and breathe easier by cleaning with natural products. Hydrogen peroxide is a great natural anti-bacterial agent and whitener. Baking soda works to scrub off tough stains and get into the cracks and crevices of your home. Vinegar helps to neutralize odors and get rid of tough stains. Pine oils and other essential oils like orange and lemon are great for cleaning and shining wood surfaces. Pine oil is also anti-bacterial!

3. Reduce Your Water Use –Cutting down on your water use does not mean you can only bathe once a week or never water your lawn. It is simple to cut down your water use and save yourself money as well as saving some strain on the environment. Cut off a minute of your shower time by turning off the water as you shampoo, condition and shave. Turn off the water as you brush your teeth. Do the dishes all at once. If by hand, wash the cups and utensils first and the pots and pans last. That way the water will stay cleaner longer and you can get it all done in one sink. If you use a dishwasher make sure it is completely full before you run it and run it on the fastest setting. In the yard you can water early in the morning or late at night to reduce evaporation. Run it low and slow to reduce run off as well.

4. Plant Local Flora – Speaking of saving water, planting local flora instead of grass is a great way to save water and time in maintaining your yard. Local flora is accustomed to the rainfall and temperature of your area. Not only does it require less maintenance but it is also more resistant to disease and predation by local fauna. You can even set up a wildlife area and attract birds, bees, and butterflies to your yard!

5. Natural Fertilizers – Instead of filling your yard with fake food, why not go the natural way? Not only is it better for your yard and the environment, but it is more affordable too. It only takes a small effort to set up your own compost pile and get to making some nutritious and delicious dirt for your plants. Everyday trash can go into the pile. Items like banana peels, orange peels, egg shells and other organic waste make for great compost. Cut down on the trash sent to landfills and get free dirt all in one step!

6. Recycle – As much as recycling has become a part of our lives there are still some of us who don't do it as regularly as we should. Make it easy on yourself by setting aside special bins for different kinds of recyclables. Glass, plastic, paper and so on can all be recycled easily. Many garbage collectors often will take recycling as well. Or take it up to your local school or recycling center. Even items like Christmas trees can be recycled. If you drink a lot of canned beverages you can save those up and get money back at an aluminum recycling center. Don't forget that old appliances can be recycled as well and sometimes you can get money back on those too. Old computers can often bring in some cash from their expensive parts as well.

7. Climate Control – One of the biggest expenses and biggest polluters in our homes are the climate controls. Heating and cooling costs are astronomical and the electricity they use is equally so. Cut down on your cooling costs during the summer by running fans, sealing cracks and covering windows. The sun shining in those windows can create more heat than you would think. Cracks can allow cool air to escape and hot air to take its place. Fans help to keep you cool more affordably than air conditioners by dispersing the heat around your body so that even a warm room feels cooler. In the winter, those cracks should still be filled. Cold air can blow in and warm air escape easily. Windows should be covered at night to avoid the chill factor and uncovered when it is sunny to capture that heat. Keep warmer by bundling up and using other heating elements, like leftover heat from cooking.

8. Cooking Green –Speaking of cooking, you need to be mindful of how you cook as well as what you cook. As I mentioned it is a good idea to cook using high heat during the winter. Using the oven and stove top to cook during the winter helps to heat the entire home and keep down the electric bill. However the same concept does not apply in the summer. Try to avoid using the oven and stove and instead opt for cooking in a slow cooker, outside on the grill, or even eating cold foods. A great way to cut down on pollution and cook your food in the summer is a traditional method in many countries.

Burying your food with hot coals to cook it low and slow is a great way to cook in the heat. Do not just cook a little bit either. Make a whole bunch of food and then save a portion of it for some other meals. That way you can just cook once and then heat it up quickly when you need it.

9. Drink More Water, But Less Bottled –Last but not least I'd like to talk about what we drink. Many of us drink a lot of sugary, artificial beverages that are not good for us or for the environment. Those plastic bottles add up as does the transportation and manufacturing costs. Instead, drink more water. Not the bottled kind but the filtered kind. A filter can give you the same great taste and quality of bottled water but without the high cost or environmental impact. Filtered water is better for you too than drinking

from plastics that can seep toxins into the water. Try using glass or proper containers for drinking water and make sure you don't cause leeching by putting other beverages in those containers like lemon juices or tomato juices which can be very acidic. As you can see it is not very hard to make small changes in your everyday life and live greener.

It only takes a little bit of thought to change your habits and make a positive impact on the environment. Going green starts one small step at a time, so try out some of these ideas in your home today.
