Garden

How did your garden grow this year? Greensboro had some dry spells and then wet ones. Our butter beans are still coming on strong and the pepper plants were prolific this year. Volunteer grape and cherry tomatoes kept us supplied, while the larger plants hardly produced. Groundhogs, squirrels, and deer got their share of our garden. However, at the end of the day, there was something left for us. 

As our garden closes out, a new beginning is opening up on Wordpress. On October 1st, you should receive in your email, or on your computer screen, a post that features the Lincoln Financial Group and a view from Greene Street. In the meantime, we'll head in and finish shelling these butter beans. They have been in our family for several generations, reminding us that, with effort and nurturing, things, tangible and even digital, can carry on.

Beauty & Beast

Musical Theatre at Tanger Center for the Performing Arts is upon us again.  This is the 5th season of musicals and Beauty and the Beast was spectacular. The acting, voices, scenery, lighting, dancing, everything about it was fabulous , as is the venue. At intermission,l young girls in their bright yellow "Belle" dresses rushed with their families to get snacks, merchandise, and to have bathroom breaks. Even the senior citizens were commenting on the perfection of this staging. We're betting this sets the tone for the whole season. Following is the line up: Beauty and the Beast, The Wiz The Outsiders, Shucked, Hell's Kitchen, The sound of Music, Kimberly Akimbo, The Notebook.

It is hard to imagine Greensboro without Tanger and it is so special to attend an event and see that it is full, meaning, that in Greensboro, we support the performing arts. If you are local, we hope you get to attend a show this year. 

This is the next to the  last post for Greensboro Daily Photo on TYPEPAD. We have never met anybody behind the scenes at this hosted blogging and website service. However, it has been a great place to publish and manage our content. After 17 years as loyal customers, it feels like the loss of an old friend. Hopefully, on Wednesday, you will receive GDP without an interruption of service.

Yesterday, we were on location photographing the Shea's Chase 5K on Yanceyville and also managed to fit a church into the scene. Shea's Chase started 10 years ago as a way to bring people together to support mental health and to support people whose lives have been impacted by suicide.  This was the 10th anniversary of the 5K that started and ended at Revolution Mill. Shea McKenna's family know this grief first first-hand. Proceeds from the race will support the Kellin Foundation, a trauma-informed behavioral health treatment service founded in 2013. They are located at 4010 Walker Avenue (formerly Lindley Park Baptist Church [see HERE]). The name, Kellin Foundation, is a portmanteau of the names of the co-founders: Dr. Kelly Graves and Lindy  Beauregard.

REACH Ministry stands for Reaching Every and Creating Hope is located at 2319 Yanceyville Street, at the corner of 12th Street. The non-denominational church was incorporated in 2012. Previously, REACH Church housed Fairview Baptist Church. In preparing today's post, we realize just how life is characterized by constant change. Lindley Park Baptist is no more, but the Kellin Foundation is now there, doing the good work. Fairview Baptist is replaced by a non-denominational church; hopefully, they are doing good work for the community. Let us not forget the McKenna family whose family carries on without their beloved oldest child. May we all find a way to come together, walking and running in solidarity, supporting each other.

Friday afternoon, we were driving along Silver Street in the Glenwood neighborhood of Greensboro when we saw Linda Parker Boike creating an oil painting of a house on the street. One of the former residents of this house saw Linda's art exhibit at Tate Street Coffee and commissioned them to paint a picture of their former house.

Linda hails from Charlotte, NC and is an undergraduate student majoring in art at UNCG. We were complimenting them on the ability to see what to keep and what to omit from a painting. Linda commented that painting is a photo with paint and their goal it to paint for clients a meaningful memory of something they love. If you get a chance between now and the end of the month, head to Tate Street Coffee to see many examples of this artist's work. if you can't get to Tate Street, follow Linda at Lindaparkerboik at Instagram.

Andrew
This is Andrew, who bicycles up to 30 miles a day with a video camera mounted on his helmet to document aggressive drivers who ignore bike lanes. The day we met him on Elm Street, he had ridden from Groometown Road to downtown Greensboro. With his protective gear, we expected him to climb onto a motorcycle—yet he rides a bicycle. Andrew patrols daily on his Hyper bicycle and does not hesitate to report unlawful driving that could endanger cyclists. 

Let's hope the roads remain safe as he rides from Point A to Point B and that his presence reminds cyclists to ride defensively and for motor vehicle drivers to be responsible and respectful. Everything is to be gained by mutual respect.

Recently, the above bunny was spotted unning loose in the Glenwood neighborhood of Greensboro. Cameron, who works at Reconsidered Goods (and LOVES, LOVES rabbits), helped organize an effort to capture this beautiful bunny. The first night they tried, but it was getting dark and she dashed under a house. The next morning, they returned to find her and caught her by using a broccoli floret. She was brought to Reconsidered Goods (a creative reuse center at 4118 Spring Garden Street), as the employee who had her was on their way to work.

It was decided the rabbit would become a store bunny and her name would be Floret, since she was lured with a broccoli floret.  She is now off the streets and  living her best life. She has a double wide cage with plenty of food, water, affection, and freedom from harm by outdoor dogs and cats or wild animals that have adapted to city life. She is tame and readily comes to people, as opposed to cowering away.

The next Reconsidered Goods  (RG) fundraiser will feature a laminated likeness of Floret climbing a ladder trying to reach her goal (a carrot). Next time you are in  RG, head back to the book section and meet the cleanest, friendliest, most loved rabbit in town. Oh, and please make a donation to help Floret reach her goal!

This past Sunday, former pro basketball player and coach Bob McAdoo, Jr. was in town for the dedication of a basketball court named in his honor. The court at Benbow Park, located at 2001 S. Side Blvd. and near McAdoo's childhood home, is now officially Bob McAdoo Court. McAdoo played 14 seasons in the NBA, was named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1975, and is a member of the NBA Hall of Fame. He is also a proud graduate of Ben L. Smith High School.

Although we had a prior engagement and couldn’t attend, we were fortunate that our friend Suzan Antin attended the ceremony and shared this photo with us. Suzan is also a Smith High School graduate, and her father, Coach Spurgeon Ayers, coached McAdoo at Smith H.S. From Suzan’s other photos, it’s clear that the court is absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. Grab a ball, some friends, and head out for some hoops.

Events like this dedication remind us of the many great people and places connected to Greensboro.

Downtown, at 211 South Elm Street, The District has relocated from State Street. It is now in the building that once housed Gate City Yarns. Over the years, Amanda built such a sense of community and had her shop open extended hours for people to come and knit, crochet, and  felt in the company of other fiber artists. She built such a sense of community. That same sense of community is present in The District. The District's format is to have several vendors, a smaller version of the Design Archives model.

In the back left corner of the store, we noticed the assembled LEGO kit. It is our understanding that theatre students at the Weaver Academy buy the kits and assemble them for a reasonable uncharge as a fundraiser. This is such a great, creative idea, and for a worthy cause. Robert Indiana created the first LOVE sculpture in 1970. The sculpture stems from the artists 1965 design on a Christmas Card for the Museum of Modern Art. This Weaver fundraiser brings Amanda's community building full circle. The students working together are building connections to support their theatre community. Community is best when LOVE is involved.
