GREENSBORO — About 20 yards of the right lane on southbound Benjamin Parkway near North Elam Avenue will remain closed today so crews can repair the asphalt.

Downtown performing arts center design team recommends former YWCA site

GREENSBORO — The former YWCA site is the best location for a proposed downtown performing arts center, a team of architects hired to create design concepts said today.

The New York architects showed designs and the site recommendation via a remote connection to a committee of the community task force studying the issue.

GREENSBORO — Police say a man found dead Monday morning is the victim of a homicide.

Greensboro police identified the victim as Jeremy Jermih Bailey, 24.

Police said Bailey was fatally shot in his apartment at 2330 Kersey St., Apt. D.

Someone inside the apartment called Greensboro police to the scene at 4:29 a.m.

GREENSBORO —Greensboro police say northbound lanes of Benjamin Parkway have reopened.

Southbound lanes will remain closed between North Elam Avenue and Campus Drive until further notice.

The city says water service will be restored to Kiser Middle by 10 p.m. tonight and that road repairs could take most of the night.

Car hit by mailbox dropped from U.S. 220 bridge

GREENSBORO — Crime Stoppers and a man whose car was hit by a mailbox earlier this month are offered up to $3,000 for information leading to the arrest of the culprits.

Greensboro police said a man was driving north on U.S. 220 on Nov. 18 when a steel mailbox smashed into the windshield of his car as he traveled under the bridge at West Steeple Chase Road.

GREENSBORO — Guilford County Schools is one of 61 districts in the running for a Race to the Top grant, according to an announcement by the U.S. Department of Education.

The finalists were selected from 372 applications sent to the department in November. Iredell-Statesville Schools is the only other North Carolina district to make the final round.

Man arrested in Greensboro stabbing; victim was sitting in car

GREENSBORO — A man said he was sitting in his car early this morning when another man came up and stabbed him.

Greensboro police said the stabbing was reported at Coliseum Boulevard and Freeman Mill Road at 2:09 a.m.

Matthew Roderick Nematz, 27, is wanted by Greensboro police on charges of felony larceny and possession of stolen goods or property.

Nematz is white, 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 145 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes and drives a Honda Accord.

Nematz’s last known address was 2111 Spring Garden St., Apt. B in Greensboro.

Last year, All Saints Episcopal Church raised $4,000 for the city’s Winter Emergency shelter program through Art-a-Fair, an event that let the community buy art created by church members and their artist friends.
