-Cody Hylton led the Vikings with 22 points as he made 6 three pointers. Keaton Haack and Hunter Clary finished with 12 points 10 points for Northwest. Viking point guard, Matt Pawlowski, contributed a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists.
-As the #5 seed in the State Playoffs, the War Eagles will host a 3rd round game on Friday at 7:00 pm versus the winner of the Richmond Co./High Point Central game.

***SPECIAL NOTE***
The Vikings say goodbye to seniors: Hunter Clary, Drew Coble, Ryan Doerr, Keaton Haack, and Matt Pawlowski as they end an otherwise successful year. These seniors helped to lead the Vikings to their first regular season conference title since 1998.

LYNCHBURG, VA – Randolph College head coach Andy Sinclair, in his first season with the WildCats, earned his first collegiate win Wednesday afternoon with a 12-8 victory over the Lions of Piedmont College in non-conference men’s lacrosse play from WildCat Stadium.

Sinclair, who took his first collegiate coaching head job at Randolph, saw his team trail early as the Lions (0-1) netted the first two goals of the game to lead 2-0 after only 3:57 of the game. Randolph battled back, scoring three straight goals, all assisted by Bobby Crosby (Bethel, CT/Bethel) to take a 3-2 advantage.

After PC evened the score with its third man-up goal of the game, the WildCats would get back-to-back goals from sophomore Josh Borgelt (Greenville, SC/Mouldin) and junior John Croney (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine). Junior Jon O’Hara (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) also scored in the second quarter to put Randolph up 6-4 going into halftime.

The third quarter proved to be all Randolph, as the WildCats outscored the Lions 4-0 in the period, with Colton Wood (Chula Vista, CA/Otay Ranch) netting his third and fourth tallies of the game. Piedmont tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but the WildCats fended off the push from their visitors for the home victory.

Wood had five points on 10 shots, also picking up three ground balls. Junior Stephen Allman (Goodview, VA/Roanoke Catholic) had a strong contest, scoring three times and dishing out two assists, while O’Hara had a two goals and two assists as well. Borgelt finished with two goals and an assists, marking his first three points of his career.

Senior goalkeeper Kevin McCracken (Annandale, VA/Annandale) made 15 saves on the day, while sophomore faceoff man John Grundy (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) won nine of his 16 faceoffs en route to a team-best eight ground balls. Defenders Ryan Blackwell (Brambleton, VA/Briar Woods) and Ryan Pearson (Asbury, NJ/North Hunterdon) combined for nine ground balls and five caused turnovers.

The Lions, who were playing in their first collegiate game ever, were led by the three goals from first-year Patrick Ammons. Nicholas Green chalked up two goals and an assist, while Steve Blanchard had a goal and four helpers.

The WildCats were outshot by two, but won the ground ball category 47-37. Randolph will look to earn back-to-back wins Saturday afternoon against Ferrum College at 1:30 p.m. from WildCat Stadium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Ashley Boteler (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) hit two home runs and drove in six in Guilford College’s 9-5 softball win over visiting Peace College Wednesday. The Quakers (3-1) completed the sweep with an 11-0 victory in the thanks to Jessica Burcham (Lexington, N.C./South Davidson) three-hit shutout. Guilford has won seven straight games from Peace and nine of the last 10.

In addition to notching career highs for homers and runs batted in (RBI), Boteler (1-0) also earned her first pitching decision with five-and-a-third innings of four-hit pitching. She relieved starter Brittany Donathan (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) in the second inning after the Pacers (4-6) scored three times and still had the bases loaded. Boteler (1-0) retired cleanup hitter Lauren Martin (Pittsboro, N.C./Northwood) to end the threat and smacked her second homer one inning later to open a 6-3 Guilford advantage. Boteler belted hit a three-run homer in the Quakers’ four-run first.

Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) had three hits and scored twice for Guilford. Lindsey Haver (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) and Kendra Yearick (West Jefferson, N.C./Ashe County) both had two hits in defeat.

Burcham (2-1) was the story in game two as she scattered three hits and fanned six in her school-record 14th career shutout. Guilford’s offense scored all 11 runs in the first two innings on 10 hits and five Pacers’ errors. Only two runs were earned. Boteler and Autumn Yoder (Friedens, N.C/Somerset) both had two hits for the Quakers. Yoder and Sarah Cutright (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) both had two RBI.

Guilford visits Averett University Sunday (2/26) at 1:00 p.m.

Danielle Duncan highlighted five USA South honorees, claiming Player-of-the-Year Honors to go along with her first team All-USA South Selection. Duncan has been honored by the conference after each of her four years at Greensboro, earning second team All-Conference her freshman year and First Team All-Conference three times. Her 19.4 points per game and 54.2 shooting percentage are ranked second in the conference and are team bests as well. In 24 games this season, Duncan has averaged 19.4 points, 8.3, rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game. In addition to leading the team in shooting percentage, she also leads the team in free throw shooting, hitting 181 of 229 (79%), on the season. She scored a season high 31 points against Piedmont on January 16th and had 16 rebounds against St. Mary’s on September 19th. Duncan was named USA South Player-of-the-Week three times this season and posted seven double-doubles. The Pride have been phenomenal in her time at Greensboro, posting a record of 98-18, winning four regular season conference titles, one tournament title, making the NCAA tournament three times, and advancing to last year’s Sweet Sixteen. Danielle, for her career, is just 20 points away from the 2,000 mark and already holds the school record for points in a career.

Bianca Richburg earned USA South Second Team, which marks the third time she has received conference recognition. Following Richburg’s freshman year, she garnered Third Team Honors and Rookie-of-the-Year, while adding Honorable Mention Honors last season. Richburg leads The Pride in rebounding this season with 9.2 per game, which is good enough for fourth in the conference. She also averages 12.8 points and 1.2 blocks per game, while posting eight double-doubles and earning USA South Player-of-the-Week on February 6th. She is a menace on both ends of the floor, grabbing 31 steals and blocking 30 shots this season and is a multiple threat on the scoring end. Richburg has hit 23 threes this season, shoots 70.7% from the charity stripe, can hit outside jumpers, and drive to the lane. She creates a mismatch for any type of defense and proved it by eclipsing the 1,000 career point mark in the conference quarterfinal match-up on February 21st. She matched Duncan’s 31 point total on February 4th against NC Wesleyan and grabbed 15 rebounds against Meredith on February 5th. In addition, she was a part of last year’s 28-3 squad that reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

Andrienne Terrell caps her senior season with her first conference award, claiming Third Team USA South Honors while running the point for Greensboro. Terrell makes a living finding the open shooter and leads the team and conference in assist this season with 5.7 a game, which ranks her ninth nationally. She contributes in many other fashions as well, scoring 9.6 points, grabbing 5.2 rebounds, and averaging 2.3 steals a game. She posted two double-doubles this season, with 14 points and 11 assists against NC Wesleyan on February 4th and 12 points with 11 assists against Meredith on February 5th. On February 2nd, against Allen University, she set a season high in points with 22 and steals with six; her season high 11 rebounds came on January 7th, also against NC Wesleyan. Terrell has hit 18 three point shots this season, but her biggest came on February 11th at Christopher Newport, as her 30 foot buzzer-beater gave The Pride the victory and helped them claim a share of this year’s USA South title.

Chevena Pickard is receiving conference recognition for the second time, earning Honorable Mention Honors this season to add to her Third Team and Rookie-of-the-Year awards a season ago. Pickard has just one double-double on the season, a sixteen point, ten rebound performance on January 18th against Mary Baldwin, but averages 10.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. She brings a lot of energy and youth to the team, as she is the only sophomore starting for Greensboro this season, yet she lacks no experience, as she played in 31 games for last season’s 28-3 Sweet Sixteen team. She scored a season high 22 points against Cabrini College on September 11th in a 74-48 blowout victory.

Hannah Holm rounds out this season’s honorees, earning the All-Sportsmanship Award for The Pride. Holm is a key reserve for Greensboro, averaging nine minutes per game, while scoring 2.2 points and grabbing 1.5 rebounds. She is an excellent team player who plays hard defense and looks for The Pride’s stars before taking the shot herself. Holm is also a good free throw shooter, converting 11 of her 14 attempts this season. She scored a season high eight points in the season finale, a 66-50 victory over Shenandoah.

Greensboro’s honorees are hoping they can lead Greensboro to their first conference tournament championship since the 2007-2008 season. The Pride have faced Christopher Newport in the championship game each of the past four seasons, but will be forced to face them in this year’s semi-final. Greensboro defeated Averett 80-60 on Tuesday night to advance, while Christopher Newport had to deal with the upset-minded Shenandoah Hornets on the same night. Tip-off for the semi-final match-up is scheduled for Friday, February 24, at 5:30 p.m. in Newport News, Virginia. The two teams split their regular season games, so their final match-up will decide who wins this season’s rivalry and who will earn another trip to the conference championship game.

ELON, N.C. — With two games remaining in the regular-season, the Elon men’s basketball team controls its own destiny with victories earning the team at least a share of the Southern Conference North Division crown. The Phoenix will tip off the final weekend at Davidson on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena. Elon is currently a game and a half back of current division leader UNCG — the Phoenix and Spartans clash in the regular-season finale on Saturday night in Alumni Gym.

Site: Davidson, N.C.
Arena: Belk Arena
Series: Davidson leads, 34-12
Streak: Davidson has won one
Radio: WPCM 920 AM — Taylor Durham and Dick Stewart will call the action
Twittter: @elonscores

FREE THROWS
• The Phoenix is currently a game and a half back of UNCG for first place in the SoCon North Division. With a win against Davidson, Elon and UNCG would face off on Saturday evening with a league title at stake.
• The Phoenix is on a four-game losing skid after a home overtime loss to Western on Saturday.
• Elon has lost four straight on the road — its last victory away from Alumni Gym was a 71-63 decision at Western on January 26.
• A win against Davidson would match Elon’s win total for all of last season (14).
• Elon has been struggling on the defensive end of the floor as of late — Phoenix opponents have shot 40 percent or better in 11 of the last 12 contests and in all but one of the 14 losses.
• With four more three-pointers last Saturday, sophomore Jack Isenbarger moved into eighth place on Elon’s single-season list with 64. The single-season record at Elon is 82, set by Matt Nowlin in 2003-04.
• Isenbarger has scored in double figures in 11 straight games — in those contests he is averaging 20.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 4.4 apg. He has hit 41 three-pointers during that span.
• Elon’s eight SoCon victories are the most during the Matt Matheny era and most since a nine-win campaign in 2007-08.
• Elon is 10-4 when scoring 70 or more points and 3-10 when scoring 69 or less points.
• Lucas Troutman moved into Elon’s all-time career blocks list with two swats against South Carolina. The sophomore now has 82 blocks and is in seventh place all-time at Elon.
• The Phoenix has shot better than its opponent in 11 of its 13 wins this year.

LAST TIME OUT
• Elon shot 50 percent and outrebounded Western Carolina but relinquished a four-point halftime lead in a 78-76 overtime loss to the Catamounts.
• The Phoenix struggled from the free throw line, managing only 11-of-22 from the stripe.
• Elon had four in double figures led by Jack Isenbarger’s 22. Ryley Beaumont and Lucas Troutman both tallied double doubles.

ELON VS. DAVIDSON
• Elon has not won at Davidson during its Division I history — the last known victory on Davidson’s campus was in 1923 (Note: some locations are unknown).
• The Phoenix has won two of the last three contests versus the Wildcats, but Davidson came away with the 83-75 win at Belk Arena last February.
• Elon head coach Matt Matheny, a Davidson graduate, was a long-time assistant of Wildcat head coach Bob McKillop prior to being hired at Elon. Current Elon assistants Tim Sweeney and Will Roberson also worked on staff at Davidson. Roberson is a 2002 graduate of the college.

GREENSBORO SPORTS COUNCIL DISTRIBUTES FUNDS TO PIZZA HUT INVITATIONAL SCHOOLS

Invitations Accepted for 37th Annual Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro Sports Council has donated more than
$100,000 to the eight schools that participated in the 36th annual Pizza Hut
Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank Dec. 26-28, 2011, it was announced
today. In addition, the Sports Council donated $10,000 in scholarships and
charitable contributions from tournament proceeds.

An excellent fundraising effort by the Greensboro Sports Council membership
coupled with solid school participation in fundraising and ticket sales
combined to allow increased donations to the participating schools. Each
school received $12,500, an increase of $1,750 per school over last year.
With this year’s donations, the Greensboro Sports Council has now
distributed more than $1.2 million to the tournament’s participating schools
in the last 13 years.

“The tournament support the Pizza Hut Invitational enjoys is truly amazing,
and we are delighted to be able to make these contributions back to our
participating schools,” Greensboro Sports Council president Tommy Watkins
said. “When this tournament began 36 years ago, the mission was to raise
money for high schools in Guilford County, and I am ecstatic that we not
only continue to subscribe to that mission, but also that we were able to
increase our donations to the schools this year. We appreciate every one of
our sponsors and every person who bought a ticket to the tournament because
those people are the ones who made these donations possible.”

In addition to the school donations, the Council awarded $8,000 for its four
annual Bill Lee Memorial Scholarships. The Council also made two charitable
donations: $1,000 to Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test and $1,000 to
the Corrigan Faircloth Chapter of the National Football Foundation to
sponsor a scholarship.

The 37th annual Pizza Hut Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank is set
for Dec. 26-28, 2012. As is the case each year, members of the Greensboro
Sports Council met in January to discuss possible changes to the 36-year old
event. As organizers of an invitational tournament, the Council can change
the field or format at any time, but after lengthy discussions, a decision
was made not to make any changes to the event at this time.

Therefore, next year’s tournament will feature the same stellar field and
thrilling matchups that characterized the 2011 tournament; the Greensboro
Sports Council has extended invitations to: Greensboro Day School, Grimsley
High School, Northeast Guilford High School, Northern Guilford High School,
Northwest Guilford High School, Page High School, Ragsdale High School and
Smith High School. All invitations were accepted.

The Pizza Hut Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank is an annual high
school basketball tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Founded in 1976 as the
Little 4 Invitational, the tournament features men’s and women’s teams
representing eight Guilford County high schools playing at the Greensboro
Coliseum Complex. Tournament proceeds are donated to local charities and
the participating schools; the Pizza Hut Invitational is planned and
implemented by the Greensboro Sports Council.
