Barclays Money Skills Week at GCC

GCC Students were joined by staff from Barclays to participate in tutorials, competitions and workshops as part of Barclays Money Skills Week from the 16-20 April.

Barclays Senior Executive, Naguib Kherai, who visited the college during the week, hoped the week’s events raised awareness about the importance of managing your finances to GCC students;

“ Money Skills Week helps students build the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to manage their money more effectively.”

A range of activities were arranged to raise awareness of the importance of budgeting especially when going to university.

Jack Hodges, Public Service Level 3

“The activities were very informative and it makes me think about my money more.”

One activity which really struck a chord with students was Leah’s Story. Students were shown a video of Leah who had just completed her first year at university. The video was shown in three parts and in-between each part students discussed Leah’s story with Barclays staff.

The second half of the video showed how Leah gets a job, but as a result she looked stressed, unhappy and how it affected her studies.

Public Services student Sophie Taylor found Leah’s story helpful for her future plans;

“I thought it was a good experience to learn about how easy it is to get into debt from overdrafts, store cards and credit cards… quite scary.”

In addition to the workshops AAT and fashion students together with student ambassadors ran a number of competitions throughout the week which tested students on their budgeting skills when shopping for food, fashion, family and independent living. Prizes on offer included; iPads, Top Shop vouchers and trips to Barclays headquarters.

“Thank you to all tutors for encouraging learners to take part the various Barclays Money Skills Event. Barclays volunteers and the senior executive Naguib Kherai said our students were amazing, respectful, enthusiastic amongst others and engaged throughout. Our students are a good ambassadorship for the college.”

Yes, Minister?

On Thursday 2 February the ESOL Department was visited by group of civil servants from BIS, DWP, The Home Office, DCLG and the SFA. All of these departments deal with ESOL from different angles (preemployment training and English for Work, ESOL for job seekers, for citizenship, for community cohesion etc) and often make conflicting demands on providers and students.

The purpose of the visit for the civil servants (many of whom are new in their posts) to gain an understanding of ESOL in a diverse urban college. Their impression will certainly inform future thinking about funding and provision.

The purpose of the visit for us was to debunk some of the myths about ESOL prevailing in government: that our provision is poor quality, with poor outcomes and progression. So no pressure there!

In the morning they visited several ESOL classes. Some joined in and many commented on the degree of enthusiasm and the language the students were able to produce. Needless to say our teachers put on a good show and lessons were relevant, engaging and classrooms decorated and welcoming. There was a brief working lunch hosted by Gary, at which we raised the plight of age contested asylum seekers, the issues around setting up courses with JCP and a range of other issues followed by a learner meeting.
The meeting was really well attended and included some alumni (Egle from Finance, Dorata, now of DKNY), some of the stars of last year’s Action for ESOL campaign (Juan and Idil, to name two), students who have progressed through the ESOL levels and into level 3 courses and, of course, current ESOL students of every age, nationality and level, all really keen to demonstrate how much they value the classes and how important they are to their lives.

Afterwards Gary said that he felt very proud of the very positive impression and message our students presented to our visitors. And Bill Hallahan, the civil servant at BIS with responsibility for ESOL wrote, “Please pass on our thanks to all the staff and students for giving up so much of their time to see us. I know from speaking to everyone that came along that they had found it really worthwhile and insightful. It was really beneficial to see ESOL being taught, to speak to the teachers and to hear directly from the students.”

We hope we have contributed to a fair and positive future for our provision and our students.

Students awarded a good deal

Five unemployed Greenwich residents on a Jobcentre Plus course run by the London Gaming College have secured jobs in the newly opened Aspers Casino at Westfield Stratford City.

The successful candidates were amongst thirty students who have recently completed a seven week intensive programme held at the colleges casino based at Charlton Athletic.

Speaking at an award ceremony to present qualifications to the successful croupiers, Richard Smith General Manager from Aspers Casino was impressed with calibre of training and the success of the programme;

“ Aspers Westfield Stratford City are delighted with the successful graduation of 30 Trainee Croupiers, from our first training academy held in partnership with London Gaming College, for what will be the largest casino in the UK when it opens its doors on 1 December 2011. The success of this process has ensured that our next training academy for 36 Trainee Croupiers has already been booked with London Gaming College.”

During the training programme, students learnt how to deal the games to the standard required to work in a British Casino. They were also taught the main games such as Roulette, Blackjack and Poker.

Gary Chin, Principal of Greenwich Community College, who run the London Gaming College is pleased that the college’s partnership with Jobcentre Plus is resulting in securing jobs for Greenwich residents:

“The college’s role in the community is to ensure we train local residents to the level required to find employment with prestigious employers. Our partnership with Jobcentre Plus and Aspers is a fantastic example of Further Education at work. I would like to wish all the successful students good luck with their new career.”

Alan Penny, Head of London Gaming College is looking forward to continued training and support to the largest casino in the UK:

“London Gaming College is delighted to assist Aspers with its recruitment and Training for its new casino in Stratford and we look forward to working in partnership with Aspers in the future.”

Tina Power from Greenwich was one of the successful students on the level two diploma in Gambling operations at the London Gaming College; She said:
“All the staff were friendly and patient with all the students, It was very challenging mentally and pushed us to our limits. I would recommend the course to absolutely anyone, even those that feel they are not that good with maths because the course is structured is such a way that you will pick things up fairly quickly. The course has sent me onto a whole new career path with so much room to improve in what I do, so I can always move forward and up the ladder within the casino industry. I have the option to maybe travel abroad and live and work with this career or even work on cruise ships and see the world”

RACE, GENDER AND IDENTITY. GREENWICH COMMUNITY COLLEGE REMAINS HIGHLY INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY COHESION.

Race, gender and identity are issues that trouble boys and young men in South East London.

Greenwich Community College has once again proved its engagement in supporting community cohesion by hosting ‘Capturing the journey towards community cohesion’ on 23 November 2011.The event was a presentation of the findings from a successful ID project run by ‘Working with Men’ and was organised in preparation for the report which is currently proposed for the House of Commons.

The project, based in Thamesmead involved working with 12 to 18-year-olds, and engaging them with race, gender and identity issues through arts, theatre and film focus. The ID project recently won the Baring Foundation Award for Community Cohesion and worked in partnership with Greenwich Community College in the very successful ‘Police Question Time’ event hosted by the college. The presentation was attended by around forty guests including local councillors, members of Youth Service, representatives from local schools who have also benefitted from the work of ID project, Richard Woods, Woolwich Polytechnic the Borough Commander, and representatives from Greenwich Community Safety Team.

Leslie Mitchell, Conflict Resolution Development Worker, called by his pupils and co-workers ‘the racism man’ due to his involvement in anti-racism work, presented the achievements of his ID project. The main focus of the project was to help boys and young men to relate to their own identity in the community, where the main concerns of the people living in the Thamesmead were gangs; in particular T Block, racism and community safety. ‘I think that what the project was really about is that when you set up the right conditions, people will talk, people will not feel scared or ashamed to have the views and to share with other people. So the other people can hear and maybe will be challenged to listen, to understand, and question them. It is creating an environment that enables and encourages boys and young men to safely discuss, share and challenge their opinions, attitudes and behaviours around sensitive topics, and I think this is how we measure our success.’

The ID project was put into life in free education and development based organisations: Greenwich Community College, Woolwich Polytechnic and Hawksmoor & West Thamesmead Youth Clubs. The co-ordinators of the project agreed that the project had a positive impact on the participants. Andrew Smith, Head of learner services at Greenwich Community College said: ‘The project had a positive impact on us, as some of our students, particularly from African communities weren’t getting themselves into stress, because they were being coached, and they were being mentored.’

We gave out 48 copies of Philip Pullman’s “Northern Lights” and the same number was given out of “The Fingersmith” by Sarah Waters to GCC students for free the following Monday.

They were distributed in the LRC and the Student Union and they were all gone within the first 15 minutes!
All Dressed Up & Somewhere To Go

Ferrier friends from far and near flocked to the estate for the fourth annual festive ‘tree dressing’.

The ancient ceremony to celebrate neighbourliness and the environment had been scheduled for early December – but the snow was too deep. Heavy rain came down instead on the January procession, but nothing dampened the enthusiasm for the fun and for this year’s theme of ‘community’.

Once again, council tree surgeons had helped organisers by hanging decorations in Telemann Square. As always, Helen Nicholas, the community development worker at Greenwich Community College – one of the annual event’s main organisers – had encouraged children at local schools and youth clubs and their parents to get fully involved.

They knitted and crocheted ‘textile art’ jackets for the tree trunks this time, as well as thinking up community pledges to display from the branches. They also made the lanterns for the traditional procession. The Ferrier Estate and its surrounding area is currently undergoing one of Europe’s biggest regeneration programmes.

Our 2nd Greenwich Cultural Celebration

Students celebrate their cultural diversity at the 2nd Greenwich Cultural Celebration on 16 December 2010.

A range of stalls were set up for students to visit as well as dressing up in traditional clothes and tasting a variety of foods, a treat for anyone’s palette! Each stall represented a country in the world, from Afghanistan to Tanzania, Angola to Romania and all points in between. ESOL students decorated their stands with traditional clothing, ornaments, posters etc. Students and staff had a chance to watch traditional Thai fruit carving and take part in singing and drumming.
Students studying the BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 Fashion organised a Fashion Show to show off their Culture Shock – Roman Britain range of clothing they had been working on. Most of the designs were based on the Roman toga and were developed by draping fabric on the mannequin with added textile techniques and embellishment to produce a wide range of design ideas. They were shown in a fashion show, modelled by them and students from other fashion courses.
The Student Union invited Asafo Gyata to set up a martial arts and drumming workshop. Student and staff were encouraged to dance to traditional African drumming.

Eye4Change showcased work by GCC students who had prepared a project around personal identity during a six week enrichment programme. The London DJ and MC Academy Ltd were also invited to support the event by providing a range of music to compliment the afternoon.

The Greenwich Cultural Celebration was an excellent opportunity for students and staff to showcase aspects of their cultures, explore their heritage with others; to value what we have in common and share our different backgrounds. Click to view the day in action

“No! I said I found a dead mouse!” If this sort of exchange seems familiar it may be because you are not hearing as well as you used to. If you look at “ten pounds” and “dead mouse” in the mirror as you say them, you will see how similar they look and how easy it could be to confuse them if you do not hear too well. One in seven people in our population has a hearing loss. For some this condition is inherited, for some it comes as the result of illness or accident, for some it comes as the result of exposure to noise, and for many it is just a natural part of the ageing process.

Losing part or all of your hearing can lead at times to feelings of frustration and isolation.
Photography has taken me places!

1st Course Free at GCC was the first stepping stone onto my new career. In July 2008 I would have never expected to be running my own photography business.

I had always been interested in photography as a hobby and after studying Photographing People at the Greenwich Park Centre I went onto doing a Diploma in Photography at London College of Communication. Karen Rawlinson was an excellent tutor who showed me how to enhance my hidden talent. The lessons were consisted of a mix between indoor and outdoor photography.

Studio lessons were a great advantage; we learnt how to use a range of equipment which helped to vary the light needed to capture the ultimate shot. The fully kitted photography studio gave me the opportunity experiment and learn how light plays a key role in the capturing the best shot. Other than indoor photography we also had the chance to photograph outdoor in locations such as touristic spots of Greenwich and the commercial hub of Canary Wharf. We were also taught how to critically analyse photographs and understand what captured in that moment.

Power and Responsibility: Learning From Each Other

A very powerful piece of improvised performance was staged by learners and staff at the Plumstead centre on Thursday 6 May 2010, to a packed house in the Student Union Lounge.

It was the culmination of a few months of hard work by a group of 15 learners and their facilitator Kemi Eyeoyibo from the University of East London, who is also one of our volunteers. This drama group were particularly keen that staff were involved in the performance.

Lead entirely by the learners, the performance, entitled: “You’ve Got The Power” gave learners an insight into the responsibilities of those working for them. It also gave staff an opportunity to view things from the learners point of view. Timetabled from 12.45 – 1.20 it provided a very diverting and thoughtful lunch break.
Very able performances were given by learners and staff collaborating in a number of different scenarios. More than 60 people attended the performance and more were able to witness events from the canteen area. Audience reactions ranged from laughter, to surprise, rapt silence to rapturous applause.

It was an exciting and innovative way for learners and staff to engage in a shared understanding of some of the issues that both face at different stages on the learner journey. Testament to the College’s commitment to engage fully and openly with learners was the fact that the performers included two senior College managers: Steve Whittingham Director of 14-19 Studies and Andy Smith Director of Student Services, which made “You’ve Got The Power” an even more powerful message.

What's the point of doing Maths?

Quite a few maths students have been involved in special activities recently. Late last year Corporal Paul Ellis and a colleague from the RAF Careers Service brought along a series of activities designed to show that maths has a lot of really practical applications – such as navigation, logistics and aircraft identification.

They worked with two of our daytime GCSE groups, and were joined by some students from Public Services.

Steve Grant, who teaches the Public Services students, said “This kind of employer/student contact is invaluable. It allows employers good quality contact time with future potential employees as well as allowing students a chance to look first hand at employers to observe whether or not they can see themselves in that environment.”

The day after, 11 students from A2 maths went to Chatham Theatre to hear a series of talks organised by a group called Maths Inspiration.

These were talks by well-known experts who are also excellent communicators, and they covered a wide range of topics from interpreting medical test results to throwing boomerangs, and the most fuel-efficient way to fly to Australia. There was also a competition to guess (or try to calculate approximately) the number of jelly beans in a jar. One of our students got very close to the right answer – but we didn’t win because we democratically combined her suggestion with other people’s!

The idea was to show that there’s more to maths than just what’s taught in the classroom, and it succeeded in doing this very well. Sarah Gasquione, Maths Department.

Students saw society playing a key role “... in the way we dress and speak which forms part of our identity…”, but Debbie argued “Why should you change your image & the way you talk because of society…..?”

He explained to students that this Afro- Brazilian art form/martial art originated from times of slavery in the 16th Century Brazil. After the presentation students had a chance to play instruments and watch the Capoeira martial art in action. Click to email if you would like more information about Capoeira.

Our lucky winner Clarissa is pictured here accepting the prize with her 4 year old daughter.

Head of Marketing Alec Brand “wished Clarissa lots of fun with the prize” and said “Well done for entering.

Greenwich Community College was delighted to be in the finals for the LSIS Award for Student Liaison Officer of the Year. Our very own Rav Dhillon came second receiving ‘silver’ from Dame Dr. Ruth Silver.

LSIS the Learning & Skills Improvement Service was formed by the Quality Improvement Agency (QIA) and the Centre for Excellence (CEL). This year, according to Joe Martin, strategic coordinator for learner and citizen empowerment at LSIS, they received “a record number of entries, all of an exceptionally high standard”.

Our nomination, shortlisting and subsequent award really marks us out as an excellent organisation that takes the learner voice seriously.
A Levels Results day comes but once a year...

Another fantastic year at GCC as A Level results delivered. Out of those who sat A Level exams at Greenwich Community College 100% passed in many subjects. 342 started on this journey last year taking the overall achievement rate up by 1.4%. Aasim Mirza, was one of those.

The former Student Union President and double award winning student returned to take A Levels in Government & Politics, Law and English Literature achieving two A’s and one B. Aasim opened his results knowing his place at University was secure after checking the UCAS website and said “what an amazing journey it has been, these last 3 years. I am thankful to God for blessing me with such amazing teachers and tutors. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it were not for you all. Thank you so much” – a Law LLB awaits.

Another student going onto study at University is Alfie Meekings, who will be attending Queen Mary’s University in East London to read Law. Alfie achieved A’s in Law and Business Studies and B in Sociology leaving him feeling “really happy, ecstatic and relieved”!

20 year old Sana Khan achieved A’s in her Maths and English A Levels and a B in French. Sana is going onto study BSC Economics at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies). She commented “It’s a relief that the pressure is over – I’m really excited about going to Uni. It was difficult, as these subjects required a lot of attention to detail. I’m proud of my results and getting into my first choice Uni. Feyi Bamgbala achieved 4 A levels in Maths (B), chemistry©, Biology© and Psychology© and will soon be attending the City University of London to study a Radiography BA “I’m so excited, I’m gonna miss College but I’m so excited to be moving on. I’m happy, really really happy”

Steve Whittingham, Director of Academic Programmes at Greenwich Community College is proud of our increase in results at full A Level, with even higher grades than last year and said “We are thrilled at this year’s A Level results with 100% pass rates in Maths, English, Law, Psychology, Economics, Biology, German, French, Spanish, Music and Media Studies.

Undoubtedly, this is down to the tremendous hard work of our students principally but also because of the superb teaching and commitment of the staff. I really want to congratulate everybody for these magnificent results. Never believe that A Levels are getting easier – it is students who are working harder and teachers who believe in them!”

Swiss Tony

GCC Physics Lecturer Tony Thyer is currently out in Switzerland at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. CERN is the control centre for the Large Hydrogen Collider (LHC) and Tony was one of only a few teachers from around the World selected to attend a Teachers course about the experiment.

Read Tony’s blog below and click here for more images from the visit, including where the world wide web was launched.

The Teachers course we are on involves 38 teachers from 23 countries, including Australia, Japan, America, South Africa, many European countries, one from Scotland and myself from GCC.

The 56 bus to CERN has the usual people on it – but the conversation I overheard was not usual.
“Do you remember Greg? – He is working here now”
“What does he do?”
“He is a phenomenologist – it’s not really new Physics, he works out the mass of Beauty”

So it is really a very special place, when anyone you meet might be talking about the latest particle discovered, or how anti-matter behaves, or the first fraction of a second after the big bang.

The men sitting in the restaurant may be driving the trucks that deliver one of the thousands of magnets to the Large Hadron Collider, or they may be a winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Everyone is very friendly – clever people smile a lot here.

We do not know exactly what might be found. They say they are looking for a particle called the “Higgs Boson” – by the end of the year, the hunt may well have started.

If I am asked what is the most amazing thing about this place, it might be the incredible size of the detectors, or how complex it all is, but the greatest thing is that it exists.

Since it was formed in the 1950’s, people from all over the world have worked together here, regardless of the social or political situation they come from.

This means even sworn enemies just have a good time trying to find the evidence for “What are we made of”, “Where did we come from?” and “Where are we going?”. The humour here is also great, so they add the other important question “What is for dinner?”

Fashion Show 2009 - Casino Royale

Greenwich Community College’s annual fashion Show was held on 18th June at Charlton Athletic Football Club.

Celebrating the work of fashion students the Casino Royale fashion showcase drew over 200 guests to London Gaming College and included final collections of our level 3 BTEC students, along with other fashion students on level 1 & 2 courses.

The show demonstrated the Fashion department students’ ability to design the finest creations.

Our final year level 3 students showed collections based on ‘Urchins of the deep’, ‘ Space’, ‘Retro Sweets’, ’50’s Glamour’ and ‘Architecture’. The ‘Space Project’ is taken from the theme of Sci-fi films of the 1970’s like ’2001 A Space Odyssey and Battlestar Galactica’.

Jamilla Khan’s brilliant ‘Architecture’ collection collaborated research on modern architecture & fashion using it as inspiration garments designed with a focus on ‘structure’ using a muted colour palette.

Students also visited the ‘Hussein Chalayan’ Exhibition at the Design Museum as part of their research and inspiration for the project.

Many of our final year students have successfully secured a place within higher education establishments across London.
Jamilla Khan (Architecture Collection pictured) and Joanna Mason (50’s Glamour Collection pictured), have both secured places at Ravensbourne college on the Foundation Degree in Womenswear”.

Visit to Paris

Thanks to generous funding from Aspire, we were able to take a group of students to Paris for 4 days in May.

The first day we checked into our hotel and then walked through the Jardin de Luxembourg to the Latin Quarter (famous for La Sorbonne and the Riots of 1968!) We then took the metro to Montmartre from where we climbed up the to the Basilique du Sacré Coeur to experience the spectacular views of Paris by night, including the iconic Eiffel Tower – magical that evening, decked out in golden lights.

This was an excellent opportunity for the students to experience France and French culture first hand. On visits to museums, galleries and monuments, they were able to use their French in authentic situations, developing both speaking and listening skills – excellent preparation for the orals the following week.

At the end of the trip comments from students included: “This visit has made my year”, “I hated French before, I love it now”.

Paris is beautiful at any time, but this time we were blessed with warm sunny days and balmy evenings – perfect! The students thought so too and they have produced a DVD as a record of their visit.

Past, Present & Future - Obama Talk

Students flocked into a packed talk on Friday 20 March to hear about Obama’s First 100 Days in Office. Mark Lanning, the Assistant Cultural Attaché from the U.S Embassy in London had responded to a request from Politics student Nikki Raza.

Nikki had emailed recently-elected US president Barack Obama and requested a visit. GCC were pleased to host the hour-long talk, which ran through the build up to President Barack’s Success and looked at his present tasks and future ambitions.

As the first mixed race president he is also the first president to use a Blackberry. Mark Lanning also told of how moving from country to country meant that Obama came to know a lot of people and realise the world is huge.

So what had helped him become president? 4 times the amount of funds in comparison to his competitors, using social media and he attracted more volunteers to help in his campaign. Economic situations such as the slowdown in the economy last September also helped him to a landslide victory in elections the following month.

And the President’s main aims? Get the economy going, using a $787 billion Economic Stimulus Package and improve the US infrastructure – health, medical research and roads. One important measure has been to develop accountability – The public can see where their money is being spent by visiting www.recovery.gov.

Lord Young listens to our learners

The College was delighted to host a visit by Lord Tony Young of Norwood Green, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Skills & Apprenticeships on 24 March 2009.

As a former apprentice himself, Lord Young was particularly interested in using this ‘ministerial listening visit’ to hear what our vocational learners had to say about the student life. After meeting a group of learners from different vocational courses along with student executive members, Lord Young was led on a short tour of the College and its workshops. Lord Young was impressed by the wide range of learners, their passion for study and love of the College. He recognised the difficulties faced by learners in these times of economic hardship, which makes education and the skills we are imparting, more important than ever.

Helping our learners get into work

Rus Kanga raises funds to help Wells for India

Wells for India is a charity that works with non-government organisations in Rajasthan, where more than 15 million people live below the poverty line, despite the growth in India’s economy.

Come and find out about the work of Wells for India at Charlton House,Charlton Road, Charlton, London SE7 8RE, on Sunday 15th March 2009 any time between 3pm and 5pm.

Craft items on sale

A Short Presentation

Refreshments

Wells for India helps local communities and families with projects to bring clean water to villages. Access to clean, safe water frees women from having to spend hours carrying water, gives children time to go to school and increases food and livestock production – all of which help to give back dignity and can make the difference between life and death.

Priorities are set by the villagers themselves. Women, particularly, are encouraged to become involved in the planning and management of water resources; this improves local agriculture and stimulates other local small scale trade initiatives; health and education projects are also developed.

Students Visit Hunter Plastics

A big thanks go to Hunter Plastics in Nathan Way for hosting a visit from the BTEC National Diploma in Science class. We spent an enjoyable session touring the factory where we saw a range of plastic pipes being manufactured.

We also were shown round the labs where all the plastic products are tested to make sure they meet the rigorous standards needed for export.

The students particularly liked the machine that took the samples through six months of violent weather in a few weeks and the giant steel bar that crashed down on the plastic guttering after it had been in the fridge at 0 degrees for four hours.

From the students’ point of view this visit was an essential part of their course, enabling them to collect information for an assignment on Sampling in an Industrial Context as well as looking at aspects of Safety at Work. The group photo by the truck was taken at the end of the tour – still smiling!

Money4Life - not just for Christmas

Students at Greenwich Community College are benefiting from money management courses, thanks to funding by the Bank of America. The courses are run by Business & Education London South, which offers training to young people across south London.

Amirul Azam – Business Lecturer said “Philip Evans conducted the session for the BTEC First Business tutorial groups. The one and a half hour training session was part of their tutorial programme. Handling money well is essential for young people today if they’re to fulfil their potential and make the most of their opportunities.”

The courses include prioritising spending in a budget, choosing suitable bank and savings accounts and understanding how credit works. They are being delivered to 600 young people in colleges and training centres.

Philip Evans, who developed and delivers the courses is a trainer specialising on Managing Personal finance. His top tips for managing Christmas spending are:

One: let the Jones win! Don’t try to compete with your neighbours display of Christmas lights or all the celebrating where you work. And remember that presents for your family and friends shouldn’t need to be expensive to be appreciated.

Two: forget the big-ticket items. Will new furniture or a new TV really make Christmas special? Stores cash in on the spending frenzy by trying to persuade us to buy what we don’t really need.

Three: don’t put on your overdraft or credit card what you can’t pay off in January. Each spring, a lot of people go bankrupt because of overspending the previous Christmas so work out what you can afford and make sure you spend it on what’s important to you and your family.

Romans victorious at GCC’s Fourth Autumn Go Tournament

GCC’s 2008 Autumn Go Tournament was held on Monday 1st December in the Students’ lounge. All of the entrants had only learnt the game recently and had never played in a tournament before.

There were three rounds played on the small 9×9 boards and the winner was Romans Seselovskis who won all of his games and Judith Knott won the women’s prize (both in picture). All the entrants picked up fridge magnets and/or some chocolates.

Go originally came from China and is similar to Western chess as a strategy game, but it offers more scope for intuitive play. Anyone who is interested to learn can do so in the Students’ Lounge at lunchtimes 12.30 ~ 1.30 or most Mondays from 4.30 ~ 6.00 pm.

Family Learning at its best

As the title implies, family learning, gave my whole family the opportunity and experience of learning together.

There were various courses on offer, these included, Numeracy course, Literacy course Science course, Story sacks, and an Arts and craft course, just to name a few.

The Numeracy, Literacy and Science courses were geared towards learning with your child and using various methods to adapt to the childrens’ style of learning alongside the more conventional classroom methods.

I particularly enjoyed the Literacy course and together with my children, we gained many new skills, these included

Learning new ways of making games using materials readily available in the house, e g Snap – made by cutting out repeated patterns on wrapping paper and laminating them to make more durable – these games in addition to being fun to play, also built both our memory and the children’s deductive skills.

We also made simple puppets of storybook characters using materials like paper bags, pipe cleaners and feathers, which helped to bring the story book text alive.

We undertook some projects – making mini books a) like personalising well known books (we used the book ‘Where’s Spot’) and using our children as the main character instead, b) We also made themed mini -books of our choice, again with the children as the main character e.g. My family or My summer holiday.

Story Sacks was another interesting course. Various resources are made to support a chosen, well-known children’s picture storybook, these may include soft toys/puppets, props and scenery, all based on the book, a fact based book similar to the book’s theme and also games and activities.

These resources are stored together in a sack, hence the name, and can be used for role play and to liven the storybook and develop a life long interest in books.

We made ‘Story sacks’ for books like ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’ and ‘Kipper’s Toy Box’. Everyone of us involved in the course had the opportunity to contribute from choosing the book, what props, games or scenery to make, materials to use and how to best way to bring the book to life.

We had the opportunity to put skills we already had into practise and learn numerous new ones, these included – Knitting, puppet making, use of sewing machines, watercolour painting, clay moulding/pottery and team building.

The above is just a summary of the benefits Family learning has to offer and I found that every one of the courses that we took part in as a family provided invaluable experience and opportunities, these include;

The invaluable opportunity to learn with my children, which creates a lifelong bond

The chance to learn new skills, we otherwise would not have had the opportunity to as a family

A platform to offer my opinions and have them taken on board and valued which in turn built confidence to try areas I hadn’t ventured into before

I was able to exchange ideas with other parents

Provided an opportunity for team work and building

Provided an insight into the educational system at this stage in my children’s education

Although a lot of the courses were geared towards my younger children, the structure and contents of the courses were applicable to all ages in the family. Based on all of the above, I would recommend all the courses available under the ‘Family Learning’ umbrella for every Family.

Mrs O Adedeji

Black History Month at GCC

Activities were arranged by the Student Union to mark Black History Month in October. Students and staff took part in a range of activities including talks, discussions and workshops.

Max Middleton was invited to GCC to talk about Paul Robeson who was

“almost as a second father to me who had struggled to become an athlete, singer and then joined the Civil Rights Movement”.

Born in 1898 Paul won an academic scholarship at Rutgers University (USA) to train as an athlete. Max explained how he was the only black person on the campus and had suffered racism at a physical level.

This did not deter Pauls confidence and after graduating from Columbia Law School and worked for a law firm. He again suffered racism and was not allowed to enter court because of the colour of his skin. Paul left and took up a career in singing, he sung Negro Spiritual Songs performed at The Broadway. Max explained how Paul had fought hard throughout his life to change the way black people were treated and later became part of the Civil Rights Movement.

Later on that week Leslie Mitchel was invited to discuss the 1968 Olympics Black Power Salute.
A powerful documentary was shown to students and staff that illustrated the injustices black Americans had faced. Two athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos struggled to compete in the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico. As a result they won gold and bronze medals in the 200 metres. When collecting their medals they formed a protest where the iconic picture was captured as both athletes bowed their heads, raised their black-glove-covered fist in the air represented black power, no shoes represented poverty and the beads around their necks represented lynching.

Leslie works closely with the community and uses examples from the past “to encourage young black men to fulfil their dreams in life.”

For more information visit www.workingwithmen.org

On a lighter note the Student Union invited Dogon Music Worldwide to perform a dance that weaves the tapestry of a rich tradition of storytelling in West Africa. Students were encouraged to take part in the traditional dance. For more information visit www.dogonmusic.co.uk

The Learning Resource Centre had a book displayed for students and staff to look at and borrow. There was a slide show that presented images and blurbs of famous black historical iconic figures such as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Jesse Jackson.

Annual GCC Corporation Conference October 2008

Attending the annual GCC Corporation Conference presented an opportunity to meet with the governors and the employers of the college and talk to individuals about the roles they play within the committee and what influence they have on the college. It was also an opportunity for the members of the committee to ask us as student representatives, questions on our experiences at this college.

We participated in various activities and discussions where we got to learn about the current situation in the college, which was focused on the financial aspects.
We learnt about how the college is funded and how important the students are to the financial status of the college. This involved looking into marketing strategies and measuring the standards against colleges in other boroughs, in order to compete in this competitive market and how we can improve on our standards.

We also learnt about the current projects the college is involved in and how far the college has gone in reaching these targets and how this will go on to benefit each and every student at GCC and the wider community.

This experience has helped us to build on our confidence and gave us an insight into the roles we play as student governors and how we can contribute to making GCC a college of excellence. This was our first chance to take on our roles as student governors and see what challenges lie ahead. It was an enjoyable learning experience and we look forward to seeing a positive outcome from our contribution in the near future.

2008 Roadshow

Summer 2008 saw the rebirth of Skillsfest! Students & staff had a busy but fun time promoting courses at GCC.

For three weeks we were out & about handing out prospectuses & freebies to the general public at supermarkets and high streets.

Pure dedication and hard work from GCC students meant we were able to hand out a total of 8,451 information packs within three days at nine different locations. The 2008 roadshow was the most successful yet and saw an increase in the packs handed out for the fourth year in a row.

A typical day consisted of meeting up at the college to prepare information packs. These packs consisted of Part Time Prospectus, LSC Leaflet/Scratch Card, E-Skills Leaflet, Charlton Leaflet, Meridian Music Centre Card, Skillsfest Leaflet, pen, button badges and a key ring. After a fun packed morning of packing bags we would head out to supermarkets to hand them out.

Some days were very busy and we would hand out packs and prepare them at the same time. Each day varied according to the venue and the weather!!!!

The overall feedback from the public was really positive and there was a genuine enthusiasm to look through the college offer.

Having the students on board was fantastic and they were excellent ambassadors for Greenwich Community College.

A Day Out

Upon joining Greenwich College I was blessed to be taken out with my orientation class to a museum. The Teacher of this class thought that this adventure would be a good ice breaker to find out how different nations migrated to London. Little did she know that history was something I always had a keen interest in.

On arriving to the museum I noted it was somewhat small but it still managed to cover almost all of the sections known to man about Great Britain which I found fascinating.

The part that appealed to me the most was the section which always touches my soul which is the “Great Triangle of Sugar and Slavery”. Although I had to disagree with one statement on display and I quote “There is no Black History maybe in the future there will be”, I found the rest of the display to quench my thirst for knowledge.

To my amazement I was dazzled at the mixed emotions my body underwent; anger, frustration then a sudden burst or sadness, it was good to see that the displays grab you to make you travel back in time no matter what race you were. Facts, secrets and mysteries were the champions of such a prize.

I hope that everyone could have the experience to visit to visit the museum at the docklands, so you could grasp a greater knowledge of our background. As a result of this we would be rewarded with a greater sense of who we are, where we came from and the great heritage we share.

The Museum is located in the West Quays, DLR station. Also note the beautiful scenery and restaurants nearby, even grab a bite.

LLC in Zambia

Two students and I travelled to Zambia with the Charity the Tag Rugby Development Trust (TRDT). 12 volunteers in total form the UK met up with 12 local volunteers made up of school teachers and coaches who work with other charities in Zambia.

Over the 3 weeks we worked in 24 government schools in Lusaka and Kitwe and introduced rugby to over 1200 children in this time. Some of these schools had classes of up 80 students and gave our students an eye opening experience and a chance to realise that we are very privileged in this country. We coached for 4 days in each school and on the 5th day arranged a tournament for the best players in each school it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the skills that had been learnt.

Throughout the weeks the UK volunteers gave the local volunteers the coaching skills needed to continue the work after the tour had left the city. Evening and weekends were free time and the trust organised events for most evenings to keep everyone entertained, some of the highlights was a opportunity to play touch rugby against the local club in Kitwe, Diggers RFC (which the UK volunteers won convincingly) and to visit the British High Commission in Lusaka and spend an evening’s entertainment in their bar.

The whole tour was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in another culture and truly experience Zambian education, sport and lifestyle. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported our fundraising efforts this year, you contributed to a fantastic experience for the volunteers and the children in Zambia.

On Tuesday 29th April, me & Tony (from the International Office) went to Charlton Football Stadium to meet the Chinese football star, Zheng Zhi.

When I arrived at the football stadium , I met the college’s Head of Marketing. We went to eat dinner and I sat next to Zheng Zhi.

Zheng Zhi asked me “where I do live and when did I come to the UK?” I said I live Wen Zhon in China. 1 year and 6 months ago I came to the UK, so I now live in Woolwich near the college.

When we finished eating dinner I asked Zheng Zhi. can I have your signature and take a picture with you? Zheng Zhi said ‘yes’, so I got his signature and took a picture and he said goodbye to us. It was a very happy experience.

An afternoon in one of London's Royal Parks .....

Hi everyone, I am ‘Blue Orchidee’ international student. Yesterday afternoon at about six pm I went to StJames Park. The weather was fine with beautiful sunshine. Many runners, families with children and other people were having a good time.

The park is wonderful, with an artificial lake and water-jet. It’s a useful way to eradicate the stresses you can get by working on Oxford Street. You can see many ducks, geese & gray squirrels, whilst appreciating the melody which is played by birds. I am waiting for the summer time so I can go and picnic there with friends.

A Visit to the British Museum

A few weeks ago I visited the British Museum where I enjoyed the First emperor of China exhibition. The story about the after life army is unimaginable. The monarch Qin Shi Huang apparently was afraid of death. He believed in after life and prepared a life-sized terracotta army, probably to protect him and to continue his conquest.

The British Museum is the first place in the world where the Terracotta Warriors have been displayed outside of China. The exhibition is now closed but anyone can visit the British Museum to see photographs of terracotta figures. The museum gives price reduction for students (with proof). So don’t forget to go there to learn about our world history.

St Patrick’s Day in London

Sunday 16th March was my first celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Under rain and wind crowds were underestimated at Trafalgar square in Central London.

We had lots of fun. I discovered Joe Brown, the guitar legend. At Covent Garden there was free entertainment, Celtic music played by a group of Irish children with violins and flutes. I tasted Irish food cheese and bread, and the Roast beef and mashed potatoes which smelt really good.

I learnt of lot about Irish culture and values. Tolerance and respect are two of their most important values and St. Patrick symbolises them. St. Patrick called the “famous immigrant” was a Briton enslaved by Irish raiders in his youth. But after winning freedom he returned to Ireland to spread Christianity. His colour is green, one of the three colours of the Irish flag (write and orange).

New Year, New Centre

2008 has got off to a busy and exciting start with the opening of our new centre in Eltham and the results of the first student survey of the year.

We have been planning the Eltham Centre for over two years so to see it up and running is very rewarding. Not only are there fantastic teaching facilities but the leisure and library facilities are first class.

We produced a newsletter which was distributed to 27,000 local households in December to introduce them to the college and promote the courses we are running there. The response so far has been very positive.

We run two student surveys throughout the year in order to receive feedback from students about the service they receive from us. The first survey ran in November and over 1300 students participated. Everyone who enters the survey is entered into a draw to win a bike, ipod or gift vouchers so it is worth the effort!

The survey results showed that 94% of our students would recommend us which is great news for us in marketing as word of mouth is the most effective tool we have.

The next survey will be held in the Spring so we will publish the results to those on the site as well.

From Orlando to Coventry

It has been a hectic few weeks in the marketing department with a trip to Orlando for a conference, our first open evening of the year the release of our 2008/2009 Full Time Course Programme and another conference in Coventry where we picked up a national marketing award for our collaboration with Charlton Athletic.

The Orlando conference was attended by over 850 colleges from the USA, Canada, UK, Russia and India. Whilst there the college picked up an award for leadership and management. The Americans are very keen on talking about Gen Y, Gen X and Baby Boomers so look out for these terms to be dropped into a conversation soon!

Our Open Evening for School Leavers on 15 November was well attended with over 200 visitors. If you missed the event don’t worry as we are holding another one on Tuesday 29 January. Visit our events page for more details.

Termoil

The start of this academic year has brought more drama than any in the past. From rumours that one of the Student Governors charmed their way into into the Student Union Executive with tales of fast cars and big houses!!! to the landslide victory of last years Student Union President in this years elections to make it two years in a row. There is no doubt we are in for a hot, hot year here at GCC!

A2 Level students have been focussed so far this year. They have matured from last year and learnt that life is too short for mishaps and that relationships and flings are all too common symptons of failure.

On the other hand, however, AS and GCSE students can be seen canoodling in corridors, classrooms and if memory serves me well in staff offices (only joking!). Is history repeating itself? well we’ll just have to wait and see!

The Award Ceremony held here at the college a couple of weeks ago showcased the academic achievements of many students from all walks of life and backgrounds. It was a fun filled evening with students celebrating their success in complete harmony, something which GCC is well known for. Light but exotic refreshments were served at the end.

After all the excitement of the elections the Student Union Executive is now up and running and are in their first official week of office. They are set to attend a residential training session at Cranfield University for the 16, 17 and 18 of this month.

The SU President told The White Scarf:

“Hopefully we should all be able to go and learn new skills, learn to work with each other as a team and most importantly enjoy ourselves with the time we have away and come back refreshed and ready to tackle the academic year to come”

So the year looks good so far and it will look great in the time to come. So hang tight support the blog and carry on reading.

Reporting from the midst of all students the secret voice like the wind felt but not seen, this is me over and out.

Award Ceremony is Highlight of Year

The Annual Student Awards Ceremony is always the highlight of the year as students efforts are recognised in front of friends and family.

Over 35 students attended this years event which was held at the Plumstead Centre on Wednesday 24 October. We are lucky to have great sponsors who support the event each year including Charlton Athletic, Barclays and The Univeristy of Greenwich.

This year the Award winners had the choice of vouchers or tickets to The 02. By the reaction on most of their faces when they opened their envelope I think most will opt to see Kanye or 50 Cent!

As we organise the event their are always the last minute nerves and crossing of fingers hoping that no one trips up on stage! but luckily everything went smoothly.

Once the ceremony is over we make sure that all the winners have had their picture taken and have had plenty of food from the fantastic buffet supplied by 42nd Street.

We then write a press release and select which pictures we will use on the website before sending them all off to the local media. As one of the sponsors in the News Shopper we will hopefully receive coverage in next weeks edition.

Frantic First Term

What a difference a few weeks make. Where are those quiet, subdued students with expectant faces of the first few lessons? How quickly they learn to ignore you, chat to their neighbours, laugh and joke and generally make loads of noise. Still we wouldn’t want ‘em too quiet and devoid of life, would we? Maybe the next few weeks will bring about the happy medium.

Half term approaches (stop cheering) and many of us will be testing to see if learning has taken place (delightful phrase) and trying to identify any “at risk learners”.

Tests have to be set and marked of course, but it will be worth the effort if we can identify those that have not engaged with a word of the lessons, get them discussed at a ‘Right Choice’ meeting (how we all look forward to it) and counsel them to do something better suited to their abilities. We know that we will give second and even third chances to all those who have attended well and tried hard.

What about the canteen? That there cook wants a knighthood. He’s brilliant. Loads of choice and such healthy, veggy stuff as well. Broccoli salad with pumpkin seeds? Nearly as good as home.

The premises staff have been busy too. Their latest toy is a full colour, high definition CCTV system. Its more interesting and entertaining than real TV. Be careful all you car drivers who tailgate into the car parks. Not only can they identify you clearly they also know what colour socks you are wearing. They have also put a metal grille around the bike shed too. Now there’s one less excuse not to cycle to work!

And finally the weather. Next year I am off to the bookies to put good money on two sunny weeks immediately after the “summer” holidays. See you there.
