TRANSPORTATION: House retreating on energy-infrastructure bill to retool

Faced with crumbling support over a controversial transit funding move and new drilling measures, the House GOP is taking another step back on its energy and infrastructure package and will retool the bill, House sources say. The duration of the transportation bill could be shortened, funding levels could be dropped below current levels and a measure that stripped dedicated gas tax funding for mass transit could be scrapped altogether as part of the overhaul. The revamp will delay the bill's progress and could lower chances that it can be passed and conferenced with a Senate version ahead of the March 31 expiration date without another stopgap extension.
