In recent weeks, we've received some perplexing emails from a single male from Oklahoma. He is a regular reader of this blog and we appreciate him for being such a loyal fan. It appears as if he is trying to give her some good-natured ribbing, but he is coming across as downright insulting.

The first email was in response to some new photos of Sheryl we posted earlier this year. He remarked about Sheryl now looked "quite a bit older and heavier...I pay attention." Anyone with any awareness of proper etiquette knows that this is not a proper thing to say to a lady under any circumstances, even if it's true. If he weren't so insistent than he was a fan of Sheryl's, we would think he was merely a troll. Indeed, he may actually be a troll, but we are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

We advised them to not get too desponden over the turnout, but the wife thinks that her party-hosting days might be over. We hope not, because we think they are a quality couple. Most of the people on our party guest list would likely enjoy attending their parties, too.

Let's Do It Again

Delays, Delays, Nothing But Delays

After the success of our previous interracial swing party, we hoped to hold two more parties at our new venue prior to the hotel's closing at the end of the year. Unfortunately, the suite we wanted is booked for the September 26 date we targeted, and our personal schedules won't allow us to host our next party until November 21. Our fall party is normally held in October, so instead of having it a month early, we're actually having it a month later; but with both our beloved Boston Red Sox and the hometown Colorado Rockies possibly making the Major League Baseball playoffs this season, it's probably best that we avoid that month altogether. Furthermore, the New England Patriots are visiting the Denver Broncos on October 11, and Sheryl is hard at work organizing a Patriots tailgate party for that weekend.

We also had to postpone an upcoming meeting with Colorado Springs Couple ("CSC"), a couple I have played with two prior occasions this year. This time around, we are hoping to make it a group encounter with Sheryl, The Fonz and possibly one other male participating. Initially, we targeted an August 29 date, but we had plans that evening to watch the telecast of the Peak Antifreeze Indy 300 (it turned out to be a very entertaining race, which is typical for Indy Racing League events at Chicagoland Speedway). CSC could not meet before the race, and we couldn't meet after the race, so we postponed our playdate until September 5. It should be worth the wait.

Going Back to School

The training this summer must be paying off for Sheryl, because hours after cycling 62 miles in the Tour de Cure on Saturday, she and I attended the back-to-school shindig hosted by Rocky Mountain Parties. Because of a visit from Sheryl's Aunt Flo, finding playmates for the night was off the menu, but we still enjoyed getting to chat with a number of our friends, including The Fonz, Hispanic Couple, House Party Couple and Fort Collins Couple. It took a little longer than expected thanks to some unusual weather conditions, but Sheryl and I helped fight diabetes by participating together in the 2009 Tour de Cure Colorado for the second year in a row (I did the 2007 ride solo because Sheryl was sidelined by an injury). We'd like to send a sincere "thank you" to everyone who made donations to the cause. Sheryl raised $155 in donations while I raised $275. Sheryl works with diabetes patients on her job, so she has a personal stake in fighting the disease. My life was touched by the disease when I once dated a fun-loving lady from Colorado Springs who was diabetic.

The thing the made this year's 62-mile (100 kilometers) ride so interesting was the tremendous increase in temperature throughout the day. According to Sheryl's cycling computer, it was mere 50° when we started our ride at 6:30 a.m., so we were wearing our arm warmers. By the time we were 15 miles from the finish, the temperature was well into the 90s. The fair-skinned, red-headed Sheryl is not very tolerant of hot, sunny weather, so the last part of our ride was a bit difficult for her; but she wasn't the only one who struggled toward the end, as we saw a number of other cyclists seeking temporary shade along the side of the road.

We finally reached the finish line at 1:30 p.m., but a couple of Sheryl's co-workers who were attempting the century ride (100 miles) did not finish at all. The heat finally got to them 75 miles into their ride, so they hopped into a SAG wagon to carry them to the finish. A number of other co-workers had already gone home by the time we reached the finish, but we saw most of them at Carter Lake, which is at the end of a steep, five-mile climb fairly early along the route. In the photo posted above, the bruises on Sheryl's legs, obtained during a fall while on a training run the previous weekend, should illustrate just how hard we are working for this ride to be successful. Perhaps the most loyal reader of this blog is "Midwestern City Boy," creator of the blog, "Married in Ohio." This middle-American fellow is a black man happily married to his white wife, but while his blog does not focus on interracial issues as much as ours, those who appreciate interracial sex can enjoy the explicit photos he and his wife regularly post for Half-Nekkid Thursday. He recently asked me and Sheryl several questions regarding the results of my recent weight loss, and I thought the answers were worthy of a new blog post.

First the first time since the 1990s, my weight is back into the 170s (176.5 as of last Monday), and I have definitely noticed an increase in my stamina in bed. Furthermore, my erections are now firmer, longer-lasting, more frequent and easier to come by. I have also regained my ability to maintain an erection after ejaculation. I was a little concerned about working up too much of a sweat when I first started commuting to work in late March, but that hasn't been much of a problem thanks to a combination of factors. Colorado's dry air and cool mornings (even during the summer) keep me comfortable in the saddle, and the nine-mile ride downtown is mostly downhill, so unless I decide to push my pace, I get to the office relatively free of perspiration.

What little sweat I do have on my body evaporates by the time I remove my cycling gear, so I can change into my work clothes confident that I won't offend any of my co-workers. There aren't any showers available in our building (none that I know of, anyway), so I am very thankful for these circumstances. One co-worker of mine who rides along the same route (he's a more advanced cyclist, so he usually blows right by me!) also takes advantage of this situation.

When I was much younger, I could eat as much as I wanted without worrying about gaining weight. But now that I'm much older, my metabolism isn't what it used to be, so even though I'm still active I can't afford to consume the same amount of calories I used to. I will miss eating piles of waffles for breakfast almost every morning (my favorite meal for at least 30 years), but I can't do that with any kind or regularity if I want to keep my waistline in check. It was tough adjusting to this calorie reduction at first, but my body eventually adjusted.

A Swingers' Workout, Part III

Intellectually, I always knew this to be true, but it wasn't until this year that I personally discovered how diet is just as important a part of a fitness regimen as the actual exercise. Ironically, I never might have made this discovery had Sheryl and I not gone through a separation earlier this year (we are still living apart although we are a couple again). Not knowing how to cook, but also not wanting to resort to a fast food or junk food diet, I ended up consuming far fewer calories that I had before. This created a calorie deficit that allowed my excess pounds to melt away very quickly.

While Sheryl and I have always made an effort to eat the right foods, I believe that I had been eating too much of them. Regardless of what you eat, the only guaranteed formula for losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume. One of the reasons we have an epidemic of obesity in the United States is because we've developed a distorted perception of portion size. For example, a 12-ounce can of Coke® was once considered a single serving, and we were generally satisfied with that. Nowadays, a typical American convenience store sells one-liter bottles and fountain drinks up to 44 ounces, and we tend to consume those as single servings. In another example, while the proper serving of a steak should be no bigger than one's fist, but we often eat cuts of meat that are twice as big. We live in a world of super-sized meals, so there is little wonder we are growing fatter.

In recent years, even when I was training to run the Bolder Boulder 10K, my weight never seemed to fall below 190 lbs. Given the size of the meals Sheryl used to feed me, I now understand why. My dinners used to consist of so many meats, potatoes and vegetables that I couldn't see the bottom of my plate. Today, I'm more likely to be happy with a bowl of healthy soup and some fruit (oranges, bananas and grapes are my favorites). My breakfast is usually a bowl of Total® cereal along with some fruit and toast, and my lunch is normally a sandwich along with some healthy chips and some more fruit. While I still indulge myself every once in a while (I have weaknesses for sweets and certain salty snacks, especially popcorn), I always try to remain conscious of my caloric intake so that my weight is properly regulated.

A Swingers' Workout, Part II

Now, more than ever, cycling has become a huge part of my fitness routine. I bike every morning to my neighborhood 24 Hour Fitness location (which makes a great warm up!), and because my current job is located downtown, I can easily bike to work every day along the Cherry Creek Bike Path. This alone allows me to bike at least 100 miles each week. My daily commute usually takes 35-40 minutes each way. Because I always wear my cycling gear while riding, I bring my work clothes in a backpack which also contains the work laptop that my employer requires I take home every night.

On the weekends, Sheryl and I enjoy taking extended bike rides in the morning. We often leave as early as 6:00 so we can get in as many miles as we desire before the weather gets too warm. One of our favorite rides is a 44-mile loop that takes us to both Cherry Creek State Park and Chatfield State Park, mostly along the C-470/E-470 Trail (see map below). The rolling hills along that trail are challenging, but not too challenging, for a cyclist at Sheryl's level.

Between our weekend rides and my weekday commutes, I am easily riding more than 600 miles per month. Of course, a professional cyclist can do that in less than a week, as you may have seen at this year's Tour de France (we watched every stage on Versus), but that's not bad for a 42-year-old commuter and recreational cyclist. In the past four months, I've put as much mileage on my 2004 Giant Cypress DX as I did in the first two years I owned it. The only drawback was that the increased mileage put a lot of wear and tear on my old tires, so I had to by a new pair last weekend.

A Swingers' Workout, Part I

Our friend "Herman Dingo," who joined Sheryl and me for a little five-way action back in June, recently asked me about my workout routine. Even though he is already in pretty good shape, he was interested in acquiring a physique closer to mine. I found this very flattering, and it's good to know that my hard work this year has been paying off. I've lost 35 pounds since the beginning of the year, putting me at close to my high school weight and making me feel healthier than I have in 10 years.

My current job doesn't leave me with much free time on the weekdays, so getting in my workouts can be a challenge. Fortunately, I'm a morning person, so I have no problem getting up at 4:00 a.m. so I can hit my neighborhood 24 Hour Fitness location before commuting to work. I will occasionally change my routine depending on how my body feels and whatever event I might be training for, but I generally shoot for strength training at least twice per week and aerobic training at least three times per week.

For each strength training workout, I do five upper-body exercises, five lower-body exercises, and three core-body exercises. For each upper body exercise, I target the chest, lats (upper back), biceps, triceps and shoulders. For each lower body exercise, I target the quads, hamstrings, inner thighs, outer thighs and calves. For each core body exercise, I target the lower abs, upper abs and lower back. I do three sets of ten repetitions for each body part, making sure that the target muscle is thoroughly fatigued by the end of the third set. At the end of each workout, I do several minutes of stretching, which is vital for making sure that your muscles recover quickly and don't become too tight.

As much as I would rather run outside, I don't feel comfortable doing so before dawn, so I settle for running on the treadmill at the gym on my aerobic days. Nowadays, I do 50-minute runs with a 5-minute cool down. The treadmills feature a number of different programs (e.g. hills, intervals), so I use a different program for each run so that I'm always challenging myself. On flat programs, I can easily maintain an 8-minute-per-mile pace or faster, but on hillier programs, I may have to slow my pace by as much as one minute per mile. If I'm not too busy on a weekend, I will spend a day or two running outside, either at Bible Park, at Washington Park, or along the Highline Canal Trail. These runs will last anywhere from 45 minutes to 100 minutes.

Friendships Among Swingers

One of the reasons we enjoy hosting our interracial swing parties is that is gives us an opportunity to expand our growing circle of friends. Last weekend's party included a number of first-timers, including one interracial couples we were total swing virgins. Ours was the first swing event of any type that had attended, and they had not even taken the step of meeting another couple on a private basis. Thanks to their extroverted personalities, they didn't have any problem fitting in with the rest of the crowd.

We also had the honor of meeting a black couple from Wyoming who contacted us through Adult Friend Finder. They don't find many other swingers of color in their hometown, so they try to make it to Denver at least once a month. When they heard about our party in July, they scheduled that month's trip to coincide with the weekend of the party. It's always flattering whenever a couple travels that far to attend one of our events. That night, we didn't get as much time to chat with them as we would have liked, but we hope to make up for that in the future.

Another couple we met for the first time is one that we had been corresponding with online for about two years. They were living in the southeastern United States when we came across their photos on an interracial-themed social networking group. We started chatting on a casual basis, and it was a fortuitous coincidence that they happened to move to Colorado Springs about a year later. It took a while for them to finally make it to one of our parties, but meeting them was worth the wait. They enjoy taking pictures of their fun just as much as we do, so we hope to schedule a photo shoot with them in the future.

Hopefully, some of our new friends will support us when we ride in the Tour de Cure, a cycling event to raise funds for diabetes research. Sunday afternoon, we asked for donations in an email to everyone on our party invitation list. We come across a number of people in the swing lifestyle that are striken with this disease, so every little bit helps. After making some impressive progress in June, Sheryl has suffered some setbacks in recent weeks. As she and I progressed to longer training rides on the weekends throughout July, she started cancelling some of our rides due to soreness, fatigue or injury. This weekend, she cancelled our Sunday ride after suffering a nasty fall along the Clear Creek Bike Path during a 50-mile ride on Saturday. The fall left her scraped and bruised with a possible torn thumb ligament.

The accident happened as we were passing through an underpass that was flooded by Little Dry Creek. The water was only an inch or two deep and we had no problem riding through it the first time, but on our return trip, Sheryl's rear wheel hit a slick patch of algae causing her bike the slide out from underneath her. She fell forward onto the wet, concrete surface and ingested some water in the progress. At that point, we were 20 miles from home, but we were still able to make it back in spite of damage to one of her brake levers (which has since been repaired).

Our 62-mile Tour de Cure ride is coming up August 22, followed by our 70-mile Buffalo Bicycle Classic ride on September 13. It was our hope that by mid-August, Sheryl would be ready for rides of that length, but her body is having difficulty adapting to that much time in the saddle. Regardless, we are hoping that many of our friends will support us in this endeavor by making donations to our of our Tour de Cure pages. Swingers of Color

One thing that stood out about last weekend's interracial swing party was the number of black women in attendance. Given that our parties are geared toward black male/white female encounters, this is something that we didn't expect when we started hosting these parties nearly three years ago. There is a white male/black female couple that has attended nearly every party, but the parties have recently begun to attract a fair number of black couples and single black females.

Based on conversations Sheryl and I have had with other black swingers, many of them appreciate any opportunity to meet other swingers of color. The swing lifestyle is one which is dominated by white couples, so it can be intimidating to walk into a swing club and discover you are the only black people there. Also, many black women appreciate black men for many of the same reasons white women do, although the "taboo" factor does not come into play when both playmates are black.

The increased presence of black females seemingly contradicts our earlier statement lamenting the lack of black women in the swing lifestyle. However, it's plausible that while the overall number of black ladies is still very small, the few in Denver that are in the lifestyle are beginning to discover our parties. Either way, as long as they are having fun, they are welcome to attend our events. We'd love to see some of them outside of our parties, too!

Swinging Single

In spite of the increased attendance, last weekend's interracial swing party followed the usual pattern have having a large number of no-shows among the single black men. In all, nine such men failed to show up after responding to the Evite promising that they would be there. Remarkably, as often as we hear complaints from single men about how difficult it is for them to break into the swing lifestyle, so many of them fail to follow through when they are given an opportunity. Another example of this can be seen at Rocky Mountain Parties, whose next event is a "Back to School" party on August 22. Even though single men are allowed at their events for a mere $20 admission (swing clubs that allow single men often charge several times that amount), their parties are never overrun with an excessive number of solo guys. When I attended last spring's Mardi Gras event as a single, I didn't have much competition.

Because the ladies can generally fuck all night, whereas the guys will generally need breaks, it's always been our belief that the best swing parties have more men than women. Otherwise, the ladies may find themselves in a situation where they are sitting around waiting for a cock that's ready and available. That's happened to Sheryl before, so we don't want to see that happen to anyone else. The only downside is that our hotel is going to close at the end of the year to be converted into a mixed-use retirement community.. Based on our usual quarterly schedule, our next two parties wouldn't be held until October and January, but in order to take advantage of the facilities while they are still available, we are looking at hosting parties in September and November, instead.

Tour de Sheryl

This summer, Sheryl and I are doing more cycling than ever before. Every weekend in June, with one exception, we completed road rides between 18-45 miles on both Saturday and Sunday. Our favorite route is one which includes a stretch from Cherry Creek State Park to Chatfield Reservoir, mostly along the C-470 Trail. The rolling hills along this trail are a bit of a challenge for Sheryl, but she gets better at climbing them with every passing week.

On Friday of the Independence Day weekend, we did a 50-mile ride, and then took the following day off to watch Stage 1 of the Tour de France on Versus. Due to financial considerations, we won't be doing as many organized rides this year as we have in the past, but we did spend the money to participate in the Greenwood Village GooseChase on June 20. Our next organized race is the Tour de Cure in August, followed by the Buffalo Bicycle Classic in September. For the latter ride, Sheryl is determined to complete the 70-mile course, which will be her longest ride ever.

The Tour de Cure is a charity ride for which Sheryl and I are soliciting donations. Proceeds from the ride benefit the American Diabetes Association in its fight against diabetes. I once dated a woman with diabetes, and Sheryl works with diabetic patients, so this is a cause which is very important to both of us. Party Approaching

Two weekends from now, Sheryl and I are hosting our first interracial swing party since our official reconciliation several weeks ago.
