Markus Moenig (the creator of MainActor) has responded to my email this week. However, I can't make any announcement right now.

But I know that Markus has a great interest in MainActor's development to be resumed. Which is in fact a pretty good news. :)

Please, if you know someone interested in MainActor that has not signed already the petition, ask him to do so. Markus is aware of the petition (I sent him the link) and he might read the comments.

Last night, I was searching the Internet for contact information to reach Markus Moenig, creator of MainActor and founder of MainConcept (he is now CTO at DivX), and I found his profile on Linkedin.

So, I tried to be added to his contacts, as a friend, with the following introduction message:

"Hi Markus,

I don't know if you are aware that there is a petition on the Internet asking MainConcept to release MainActor as Open Source. The petition, which has 1261 signatories, is here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/mainactor/

I'm the individual behind it, because:

1) Linux needs a professional NLE software like MainActor

2) MainActor is an excellent product and it could be better with the help of the Open Source community. Please, read Blender Story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blender_(software)
I'm sure MainActor can have the same future as Open Source software).

Kubuntu 8.04 & VMWare Workstation 6.0.3: Incapable de connecter au réseau

Il y a quelques jours, j'ai procédé à la mise à jour de Kubuntu 7.10 à 8.04. Tout allait bien jusqu'à ce que j'essaie de créer une nouvelle machine virtuelle avec VMware Workstation 6.0.3.

La machine virtuelle en question est une Ubuntu 8.04 server vraiment minimale (seulement le serveur SSH est installé). L'installation s'est bien déroulée à l'exception du réseau qui était introuvable... Et qui l'est encore après moults tentatives!

Le problème semble venir du fait que j'utilise exclusivement une carte wifi (chipset atheros) comme interface réseau sur ma machine hôte. À ce que j'ai pu lire sur différents fils de discussion, je ne suis pas le seul à avoir se problème. J'ai tenté différentes manoeuvres pour corriger la situation mais rien à faire: je suis toujours incapable d'accéder au réseau en mode "Bridged Network"...

Hier, je me suis finalement lassé et j'ai téléchargé la version VMware Workstation 6.5 Beta. Je vais l'essayer au cours des prochains jours. J'espère que VMware ont fait leurs devoirs et corrigé se bogue...

Il semble que tout n'est pas rose cependant car il y a une procédure à suivre. Autrement dit, tout ne fonctionne pas "out of the box": Installing VMware Workstation 6.5 Beta on Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) + FAQ

On verra bien... A suivre!

Ubuntu: obtenir la liste des paquetages installés

J'ai découvert un petit truc super simple pour obtenir la liste de tous les paquetages installés sur son ordinateur. Ça fonctionne sous Debian ainsi que toutes les variantes de Ubuntu (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.)

Pour obtenir la liste dans un fichier texte de tous les paquetages installés, taper la commande suivante dans un terminal:

dpkg --get-selections > installed-software

Ensuite pour réinstaller le tout par la suite, si vous changez de disque dur ou bien si vous voulez répliquer votre merveilleux système:

dpkg --set-selections < installed-software
dselect

Voilà, vous serez prêt à répliquer votre installation à volonté!

MainActor Petition has (almost) reach its goal!

Many thanks to everyone! The petition to release MainActor as Open Source is pretty close to reach its goal of 1000 signatures (3 more signatures and that's it).

Now, the next steps...

I will work hard during the holidays to finish the letter I will sent to MainConcept CEO along with the petition. In parallel, I will launch The Linux Video Editing Foundation to inform people and to help existing (and new) Open Source Video Editing projects so Linux becomes THE plateform for Video Editing. I will elaborate more on that on the Foundation's website. Stay tuned!

I wish you all nice holidays and great things for the year to come. I wish also that 2008 becomes the year of Linux Video Editing and I will work hard, with the Open Source community, to make it a reality!

Good news! More people signed the petition this week: 82 new signatures. This is nearly 50 more signatures or an increase of 34% comparatively with last week. We're closer and closer to the target of 1000 signatures.

Last week-end, I started to write the letter I will send along with the petition to MainConcept's CEO. When done, I will publish it on this blog for comments.

Well, one month has passed. We are closer to my objective of 1000 signatures for the petition but no there yet. We have to find new ways to publicize the petition. If you have some ideas, feel free to leave a comment. I will read it with attention.

MainActor Petition: Third week update

Third week passed. The petition has already been signed by 600 people thinking that MainActor should be released as Open Source software. That's really good.

I have plot a graph showing the progress of the petition. I will post-it on my blog each week.

Here is the graph for Week #3.

As you can see, the rate has slowed a bit since the start. We have to continue to speak about it everywhere and encourage new signatory to sign it.

MainActor Petition: second week update

The petition to release MainActor as Open Source software has collected a total of 549 signatures (at this moment). That represents 149 new signatures this week only. This is less than during the first week (400 signatures) but I am nevertheless very satisfied.

My target is to reach 1000 signatures and then I will print the petition and send it to MainConcept's CEO. Can we do it in one month (September 19th 2007)? Yes we can! Am I an optimistic? Yes, I am! :)

Keep blogging about that petition, keep posting on forums!

MainActor Petition: First week update

A week has passed since I started an online petition to ask MainConcept to release MainActor video editing software as open source. The petition has collected 400 signatures in its first week.

By googling, I also found some blogs linking back to the petition. I'm pretty sure those blogs are in part responsible for the continuous flow of new signatories, day after day. Thanks to all bloggers out there for your help!

Also, I found 2 particularly interesting commentaries on the petition. The first one (from signatory #276):

"I'd likely volunteer as a maintainer and coorindate merging and integration with MLT and kdenlive." - Dan Dennedy

According to LottaLinuxLinks forum, Dan is a volunteer from the Kino video editing software project. So, we have already an experienced volunteer to maintain MainActor! That's great news, isn't it?

The second commentary (from signatory #312) is more intriguing:

"I've heard the code's been sold back to some Russian company; if anyone can link me to them, maybe there will still be some mutual interest in open-sourcing MainActor." - Michael Shigorin

Michael is a volunteer working for the Russian distro AltLinux. I already sent him an email asking to elaborate on this comment but I didn't receive any response at this moment. If a Russian company buys MainActor, I hope the Linux version will still be maintained, even if that company doesn't open source the code. If not, it will be the time to start a MainActor cloning project... I already have a name in mind for that project: "Montage".

MainActor Petition has already 244 signatures

MainActor page dispeared from MainConcept website

I was surprised this morning when I got back to MainConcept web site looking for the CEO comments about the abandon of MainActor... The company website was updated and there is no more link to MainActor software on the consumer products page!

May be too many emails or/and traffic to that page?

Anyway, keep signing the petition. Encourage your friends to sign too. I will contact MainConcept shortly. I will keep you posted.

Wow! I'm amazed by the Open Source community response to the petition to open source MainActor video editor. Already close to 200 signatures!

Also, the petition shows in the top ten results for the query "MainActor" in Google.

I will keep you informed of any developments. I'm planning to launch a foundation to buy MainActor source code... or finance existing non-linear video editor efforts in the eventuality MainConcept don't let go their source code. Stay tune...

MainActor Petition: already has more than 100 signatures after 2 days!

I want to thank all those which already signed the petition (http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/mainactor) to release the source code of MainActor. The petition has already more than one hundred signatures in only 2 days! It seems that we are several to believe that this quality software should not disappear.

Convince other people to sign the petition: keep speaking of it on discussion forums, LUGs, IRC, etc. With one voice let us say to MainConcept: "MainActor cannot disappear, it must become Open Source!"

MainConcept a annoncée qu'elle discontinuait le développement et le support de l'application MainActor.

C'est désolant car, selon moi, c'est l'un des logiciels d'édition non-linéaire les plus aboutis pour Linux.

Afin de demander à l'éditeur de libérer le code source de MainActor, j'ai débuté une pétition que je vous invite à signer. Lorsque j'aurai amasser suffisamment de signatures, je la ferai parvenir au président de MainConcept.

Une page d'histoire: Linux Kernel 0.01

J'ai découvert un article intéressant sur le site KernelTrap. Cet article fait un retour en arrière et relate l'apparition de Linux sur Internet. On y découvre le premier message de Linus Torvalds (le créateur de Linux, pour ceux qui l'ignorent!) sur un forum de discussion annonçant qu'il est en train d'écrire une version de Unix qui fonctionne sur 386, rien de sérieux, juste un hobby selon Linus. Il dit aussi que le portage de son kernel vers d'autres architectures est pratiquement impossible...

Aujourd'hui, Linux est le système d'exploitation disponible sur le plus d'architectures différentes et il génère des revenus de plusieurs milliards de dollars annuellement. Pas mal pour un hobby!

L'article est aussi accompagné du code source de la première version de Linux jamais publiée sur Internet: Linux 0.01.

Firefox continue de prendre du terrain sur Internet Explorer

Le site français, Xiti Monitor, vient de publier des chiffres intéressants concernant les derniers développements de la guerre des navigateurs Web. Selon leur analyse, Firefox (FF) frôle un taux d'utilisation de 28% en Europe et celui d'Internet Explorer (IE) passe sous le cap des 70%. Dans certains pays européens, comme la Slovénie (47.9%) et la Finlande (45.4%), le taux d'utilisation est pratiquement nez-à-nez avec IE.

Mondialement, c'est l'Océanie qui est la plus grande utilisatrice de Firefox avec un taux d'utilisation de 28.9%. Elle est suivi de près par l'Europe à 27.8%. L'Amérique du Nord, quant à elle, enregistre un taux de 18.7% soit une progression de 3.6% depuis mars dernier. Cette progression est comparable à celle de l'Europe (+3.7%) et de l'Amérique du Sud (+3.6%). L'Océanie est le continent où la progression est la plus rapide avec un taux de 4.1%.

C'est une belle progression pour le navigateur Open Source. C'est à suivre.

Alternatives libres aux logiciels commerciaux

Si vous êtes un utilisateur de Linux, vous vous êtes sûrement déjà posé la question suivante: "Quel logiciel libre est équivalent au Logiciel X publié par la compagnie Y?"
C'est normal de se poser la question. Après un certain temps, on finit par se choisir de nouveaux outils et à s'y tenir.

J'ai déniché 2 sites web qui répertorient les équivalents libres les plus courants aux logiciels propriétaires utilisés sous Windows.

Le premier, en français, regroupe une liste assez exhaustive de logiciels: Liste d'équivalences logicielles.

Le second, en anglais, s'est donné pour mission de permettre un accès aisé aux logiciels libres de haute qualité qui sont les équivalents aux logiciels commerciaux les plus connus: Open Source Alternative - OSALT.

Ubuntu "Feisty Fawn" en format DVD

La dernière mouture d'Ubuntu vient de sortir. La version 7.07, surnommée "Feisty Fawn" comporte plusieurs améliorations qui permettent une meilleure prise en main de l'utilisateur. Je ne peux vous en dire plus car je ne l'ai pas encore essayée. Toutefois, ce n'est qu'une question de temps!
