If you’ve any interest in getting stuck into ArenaNet’s upcoming, highly anticipated MMORPG, you’ll be wanting to head over to the registration page good and sharpish, before it disappears. One thing worth noting, however, is that you’ll have to agree to a gossip-gagging NDA in order to get in on the action. The folks in charge want to ensure that everything you’re seeing remains strictly “confidential” for the time being. Still, provide you don’t mind signing away your rights to have a good old natter about the game with your mates, then you’re good to go.

February 24th, that’s when. The free-to-play shooter is something of a dark horse, almost leaving it to the very last minute to reveal just when it is that’ll open its doors to the public. Developer Hi-Rez Studios will apparently be fixing and tarting up the game with one last patch before officially rolling it out into “open beta” status, so you can expect Tribes: Ascend to be on its best behaviour when it’s available at some point on Friday.

Alongside a number of bug fixes, we can also expect to see four brand spanking new multiplayer maps and one new gameplay mode implemented into the game; none of which in any way touched or spoiled by the “closed beta” tester-folk, meaning it’ll be a mostly level playing field for everyone where map familiarity is concerned. They’ll still be much better than at the whole shooty-shooty thing, but at least they’ll be just as lost as you are when it comes to navigating the areas.

Full patch notes can be found here. Feel free to sign up now in preparation for the imminent release of the open beta.

Hamburg-based peripheral manufacturer Roccat make some stellar products for the PC gaming market. In some instances, I’ve found one or two of their products to be the cream of the crop, especially where their gaming mice are concerned. Having said that, I’m not sure where they’re going with their new “Isn’t PC gaming dead?” website, which bodes the very same question as the title of the site. They’re up to something, we know that much, given the rather intriguing, “soon [Roccat will] tell you what we think is the smartest way forward.” I’m just hoping we’re not in for yet another absurdly priced “gaming laptop” that certain competitors are brandishing at the moment.

Whatever they have planned, they’re claiming that they’ll reveal all on March 5th. Personally, I’d be over the moon if they just revealed a new line of gaming mice and headsets. They do make terrific mice.

We’ve known about THQ’s plans to re-release their fairly-well received shooter Homefront bundled alongside the two DLC map packs for quite some time now, but it’s only today that the publisher has decided to grace us with an official release date in Europe: March 23, 2012. We’re not entirely sure if the Homefront: Ultimate Edition will storm its way into the States, which would be most peculiar considering the premise of the game, but we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground nonetheless.

If you simply cannot wait for the Homefront: Ultimate Edition to charge its way into your neck of the woods, you could always just pick up the game and it’s double dose of DLC packs from Steam for an absurd price, or you could just use Amazon UK or Amazon US as two much more affordable alternatives.

When it comes to special editions, collector’s editions, ultimate editions, or any of that “super arcade edition” edition nonsense, it’s difficult to find reason to fork out almost twice the amount of cash as the standard version of a game, only to be rewarded with piddly little cat helmets, stickers which barely stick, or statuettes which would normally cost about £10 from your local Argos. Where Mass Effect 3 is concerned, however, much like its predecessor, gamers whom dive in there nice and early and cough up early will receive a bonus scrap of story-based content for the game. It should be included as standard, in my blogger’s eyes, but such is the nature of modern incentives for paying over the odds and getting the content that little bit earlier.

The extra scenario that you’ll earn for yourself when purchasing the “N7 Edition” of Mass Effect 3 is called “From Ashes” and it’ll apparently serve as a fairly meaty bit of story — so we’re lead to believe. Before it’s prompt removal, a listing of the DLC on the official Xbox 360 product page makes mention of Commander Shepard needing to “Unearth lost secrets from the past and recruit the Prothean squad member.” Expect to pay somewhere in the region of $10 for the privilege of playing the seemingly already complete add-on if you don’t purchase the N7 Edition.

Bigger and better is usually the goal for any game development studio to strive for when working on a sequel, and it’s sounding like Gearbox Software is looking to take it to the next level. “870 Gajillion more guns,” the new gameplay trailer brags. I’m inclined to believe the studio’s radically over the top claims, considering the lofty number of weapons available in the original title. You’ll also get to meet the devilishly evil “Handsome Jack”, also, in the video, and he’s every bit as wicked as his silly goatee and swept-over hair would have you believe.

Do make sure to stick around until the end in order to watch Claptrap show off his dancing moves to some dubstep.

Borderlands 2 is due out on September 18th in the States, and September 21st in Europe.

It’s a pretty bit of kit, I’ll give it that much. And I’m all for the notion of encouraging PC gamers to tart up their desk with a classy-looking moulding of plastic and steel, but hardware enthusiasts likely won’t find an enormous amount to savour from Dell’s latest system release, the ‘Alienware X51′. If you’re still trying to get your head around all the delicate intricacies of planning and building your own bleeding edge gaming rig, then I’d certainly encourage you consider investing in a professionally constructed system from a top brand manufacturer, but you won’t find the guts of the X51 to be as all-powerful as the case and promotional material might imply.

Compact design and console-like visual charms seem to be the aim of the game where the X51 is concerned. If you’er tempted, by all means make your way over to Dell’s virtual shop for a poke around, but know that you’re looking at a base price of £699, and that’s before all the half decent hardware has been piled in there. The top of the range model, which is supposedly able to “rise to any challenge,” starts at £949.

As is the case with most every modern, big-name coming nearing release: Spec Ops: The Line will include a little bit extra content for gamers whom get in there early with their wallets. I’m not entirely sure that the PC version will also grant customers access to the additional multiplayer offerings if they pre-purchase the game, but it very much seems that way. Do approach with caution, mind, as we await and official response.

If we are privy to it, however, then we’ll allegedly have our copies of the game upgraded to “FUBAR Pack Premium Edition” status, which will include a “slew of special multiplayer unlocks”.

If you don’t mind trying your hand at tinkering with what is essentially a not-considered-stable product, but with the benefits of a FPS bump in one or two big-name games, then you might fancy taking Nvidia’s latest 295.73 beta drivers for a spin. The Green Team are insisting that this latest update could potentially provide an absurd performance increase of 45% where The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is concerned. And if you’re among those wealthy folk whom are able to boast of having a beefy SLi configuration in operation, you could apparently see as much as a 100% rise in performance figures on Mass Effect 3, when it’s released, that is.

To round out some of the mind-bending performance results, Nvidia have also seen fit to include a whopping 50 additional 3D Vision and SLI profiles for a great number of top games; read the full list here.

If only it were a new trailer, though, then it might genuinely warrant a viewing. Depending on your unwavering devotion towards all things Mass Effect-related, you might fancy re-watching about 99% of the same footage that we had only recently been made privy to, with only a split-second’s worth of new content — you might not. The popular comical thug simulator apparently has plans to ship off a gaggle of unsuspecting ‘gangstas’ into that enormous dark blanket in the sky. There’s something about a ‘hotshot director’ called Andy Zhen hiring you for a part in his sci-fi movie, ‘Gangas in Space’, complete with lasers, spaceships and other unworldly niceties. It looks and sounds absolutely bonkers, and it’s available as of tomorrow on the Steam Store for $6.99.

Volition and THQ now have me befuddled, wondering just what possible future add-on content they could bundle into the game that might outdo this one.

This particular one sees Mancunian actress Marsha Thomason — star of more than a handful of American shows that I’ve never heard of — explaining her role in Hitman: Absolution as Diana Burnwood. Thomason, whom insists she is an avid gamer, details her character as a Q-like figure and aid to Agent 47. There’s also a brief look into the sort of work that was involved in bringing the character to life with realistic movements via the medium of motion capture. Fascinating stuff, it is. Hit play.

There’s a distinct smack of Age of Empires II about them, but the first three Cossacks titles are still a trio of games that would make for the perfect addition to any true real-time strategy fanatic’s collection. And given the fact that they’re relatively difficult to come by nowadays, without resorting to picking up tatty copies of the game via eBay, you might find it to be a stroke of luck to find that these classic RTS games have trotted their way into the ever-expanding warehouse of Good Old Games, and they’re available as part of the Cossacks Anthology collection for $5.99.

Purchasing the bundle will net you a few extra bonuses, including: a high definition Cossacks wallpaper, reference card, and the official soundtrack. Nice.

We were wondering if there were any possible way of making the streets of Team Bondi’s digital re-imagining of Los Angeles any prettier. We now have our answer in the form of a handy new update for the PC version of the game, an update which was apparently released with the sole intention of ensuring that the game looks as suitably gritty and grim as it possibly could. Publisher Rockstar were the ones to break the news just a short while ago, but already gamers are flocking back to the game, dishing out harsh police justice and doodling the mug shots of perpetrators into notepads, with gorgeous DirectX 11-based visuals helping to better distinguish those guilt-ridden criminal faces.

If you’ve signed into Steam as of late, chances are you’ll have already had the update automatically downloaded directly to your hard drive and applied to your copy of the game. The new DirectX version toggler which becomes present during the game’s pre-launch means that those of us with less trendy graphics cards can still trudge onwards with DirectX 9, should they prefer.

We’re not ones to beat about the bush in the offices — we love the first Amnesia game. It’s brilliantly scary. So it’s by no means a surprise that we were almost soiling ourselves with exciting come rumour of a follow-up title being in the works. At present, all we know of the game is that it’s going to be based in China, and that there’s going to be at least one horrifying hallway to clamber through, as the teaser-ific artwork below will chillingly demonstrate:

The artwork can be witnessed for yourself in sickeningly-detailed high-definition on the game’s official website.

Note: while the project has not yet been officially labelled as ‘Amnesia 2‘, we’re thinking this will be the most likely of monikers to be slapped onto the game, so we’ll continue calling it that until official word tells us otherwise.

The game’s out this time next month, so we’re looking at roughly at four weeks, give or take a day or two, before Umbrella’s latest batch of chaotic creations are unleashed upon us. Still, despite the relatively lengthy period of time that gamers are still yet to wait through, it seems that the mega-publisher is eager to start chucking out those promotional TV spots to further raise awareness of their upcoming third-person action title, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.

If, like me, you don’t happen to own a TV license and therefore lack access to televised advertisements, you might perhaps want to see what it is we’re missing out on; feast your eyes:

View on YouTube

Does watching the advert (“commercial” to our friends across the pond) make you want to buy the game? Well, I was going to do so anyway, but a 30-second, Tyrant-teasing reminder isn’t going to hurt anyone.

The rest of the planet will have a few extra days before the Apocalypse rears its ugly, figurative head, on June 29th. Darksiders II‘s fateful release date was unveiled recently, but already we’re feeling a sense of dread as a fresh batch of screenshots have been released. You’ll have to decide for yourself if you feel that the Horseman’s latest portfolio shots are as flattering as the last ones.

Talk about recouping your losses – not that there were going to be any with this title anyway, but in just 48 hours Remedy made all their money back on Alan Wake for the PC. I wish my job did that – takes about a month for me to get my travel expenses back…but I digress. The downloadable version of Alan Wake hit Steam just a couple of days ago, coming in at number 1, and has been sitting happily near the top spot ever since.

On the Alan Wake forums, fans had been asking how the sales were going since the game launched and Remedy’s Aki Järvilehto posted his feelings about how well Alan Wake has been doing in such a short space of time:

“I wanted to chime in here. We are very happy with the sales and hitting #1 on Steam at launch was nothing short of amazing. We recouped our development and marketing expenses during the first 48 hours. And yes, we’re certainly very excited about PC.”

The download comes with the full game plus two DLC packs, The Signal and The Writer, as well as 3D and multi-screen options. However if the digital age began and ended with dial-up, as far as you’re concerned, don’t worry; a retail version will be hitting the shelves March 2nd if you like to keep your games in the physical world.

It looks like Notch won’t be de-fuzzing just yet as the doors close on what has been an epic fundraising mission over the last few days. A hugely impressive grand total of $458,213.95 was donated by kind and generous people all over the internet with four charities (Child’s Play, Electronic Frontier Foundation, charity: water and the American Red Cross) benefiting from the cash raised by the Humble Bundle Mojam event. Over 77,000 bundles of three games were sold during the Mojam drive and Notch himself pledged to shave off his face wig if the amount raised hit the 500K mark or more. Sadly it didn’t, but you can see it wasn’t all that far off.

Developers Mojang, Wolfire Games and Oxeye Game Studio got stuck in to the event, creating games for fans to buy and therefore donate to the charities listed above – Wolfire created The Broadside Express, Oxeye made Fists of Resistance and Mojang put out a poll for players to vote which game they would like created by the studio. The result was a Steampunk Egyptian themed RTS shoot em’ up (yes, that genre does now exist) called Catacomb Snatch.

So there you have it – the drive raised a whole lot of cash for four very worthy causes but just because the Mojam is over, it doesn’t mean the donations have to stop. Why not send some dosh to the charities directly if you didn’t get a chance over the weekend?

The Red Team‘s current most powerful GPU is an absolute monster, there’s no denying that. If you happen to have the luxury of having one of AMD’s beastly Radeon HD 7970 cards strapped onto your motherboard, then you’ll no doubt be pleased to learn that it’ll chuck out some hugely impressive figures when running BioWare’s upcoming space opera, Mass Effect 3, as ASUS’ J.J. will demonstrate.

If you’ve been in the market for a graphics card upgrade, and don’t fancy having to have to do so again for another couple of decades, then the ASUS Radeon HD 7970 could very well be what you’re looking for. Hit play to see how the card handles Mass Effect 3, and also for a brief tour of ASUS’ own GPU Tweak overclocking and monitoring software.

Nvidia, the ball’s in your court. Impress us with the GeForce GTX 670 or GTX 680, or whatever it is your lads are working on. C’mon, we know you’re cooking up something special.

Mass Effect 3 is due out in March.

According to the studio, we can expect as much as four new enemy types to make our virtual lives a misery, and five new campaign levels — adding up to an estimated three hours worth of gameplay — to further stretch out the shooty-shootyness.
