10 Points I Learned at Teach Them Diligently

I learned so much at the Teach Them Diligently Homeschool and Parenting Convention, last week. Today, I thought I'd share with you 10 main points that I picked up while listening to speakers, and just being there. I hope it blesses and encourages you, as much as it did me.

1.) Seek God first ~ Matthew 6:33 (NIV) says, "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." We are here on Earth for His pleasure. He wants to have a relationship with all of His children. We need to remember our most important relationship is the one we have with Him. Putting anyone or anything else ahead of Him... is idolatry. "We still have one main resource... this book {the Bible}... God gives us all advice." ~ Pam Tebow at Teach Them Diligently, Nashville.

2.) It's about fixing you ~ "You are the worst sinner! See yourself as the one needing fixing." ~ Todd Friel {Wretched Radio} If you have problems with other people, especially your kids, it's not about changing them... it's about changing you! When we remember that we are the chief of sinners, and God still sees you as perfect through the blood of Jesus, can we accept the things that bother us about other people. Is it a behavior problem or a sin problem? Attack the sin, not the person.

3.) Remember the Gospel ~ What's the Good News? That everyone has a chance at salvation through faith and repentance. Are you broken? You can find healing in the gospel. Jesus came to cover all sin with His blood. It's a heart problem if someone doesn't accept it.

4.) Keep the faith ~ Faith is the hope that we have, that things will be better... even if only in eternity. God gives us His peace through our obedience. He is more concerned with holiness... and not our happiness. He wants us to have a healthy fear... faith in His promises but understand that His love is perfect. He keeps all of His promises. "Perfect love cast out fears." ~ Mark Hamby

5.) Protect yourself and your family ~ Train your children to identify and fight the enemy. He is on the prowl... seeking to ruin all of your relationships. (1 Peter 5:8) Realize that he is a real threat and teach your children to protect themselves from temptation. Teach our boys to be men... not boys! They need to know how to guard themselves and their home! "It's your responsibility to guard your mind and heart." ~ Hal and Melanie Young {Raising Real Men}

6.) Be a blessing ~ Serve others and be a blessing in the life of others. We can't just be lukewarm Christians, who talk the talk but do not walk the walk. We need to look for ways to share the love of Jesus with others. But not just for what we look like to others... "we need to put our heart into it." ~ Rachael Carman {His Sunflower}

7.) Give grace and mercy... over and over ~ {True story} I learned that forgiveness is not just a one time thing. Sometimes you need to re-forgive someone for hurting you... even if you've already done so. The enemy will try to remind you of that sin against you... or something may trigger a memory and you have to go through the process of forgiveness again. Side note: forgiveness doesn't always mean repentance from the other person... forgiveness is learning to let go of the wrath that belongs to God. (Romans 12:19)

8.) Get the gospel into your kids ~ "How does a child learn to love Jesus? By parents modeling it. Just think GOSPEL and get engaged {with your children}." ~ Todd Friel {Wretched Radio} Our children need to be reminded, to stay God' umbrella of protection. Outside of that umbrella is pain... and death. Share Biblical truths when you see sin in your children. Attack the sin... don't dismiss it.

9.) Cover everything in prayer ~ "Prayer is our first line of defense. He will give us the encouragement to keep us keeping on." ~ Pam Tebow at TTD, Nashville

10.) I am not done learning ~ I am still a sinner... we all are! We can all "call" ourselves good people but the fact still remains, that we are sinners at heart. Until the day that I die, I will constantly be learning how to be a better Christian, better mother, and a better person. Will I ever be perfect? Nope! Which means I have more learning to do!

Blessings from Teach Them Diligently ~ Real Life Friendships

For the last couple of years I have been "online friends" with some wonderful ladies. Well, this past weekend, at the Teach Them Diligently Homeschool and Parenting Convention, I finally got to meet most of them... in real life! ;)

Certain people have thought I was crazy when I said I have friends from all over the country that I've never even met. From Florida, Georgia, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, and many other states. It's almost hard to believe that we all came together this past weekend.

It's funny when you meet someone you've known for so long but have never really hugged! There is a deep connection, that feels like you've always been in "real life friends." It's like having a long-distance family member that you never get to see. But when you come together... it's like you've never been apart.

Yet, leaving... I felt like I never will see them again. Although, even if I do not... our friendships are so deep and meaningful, and not just because we met in Nashville. No! We truly love each other! These ladies want to see good come to my life, just much as I want to see good come to their lives. We are all happy with each other when one is successful... and pray for each other through life's storms.

I overheard a conversation, at the convention, about how being a blogger is hard work. I'm not going to tell you or anyone else that it's an easy. But the benefits out way the work. These real life relationships, with other bloggers who understand your world... is such a blessing! They are walking with me through this life... as I walk with them... even if we mostly only see each other on social media.

Frugal Planning for Homeschool Conventions

It's that time of year, in the homeschool world. Homeschool conventions and conferences have started across the country.

Our first year homeschooling I never thought I'd be able to afford a homeschool convention. But... soon we'll be leaving to attend our very first one (shhh... don't tell anyone that we are newbies to conventions)! Although we have sponsors for our trip, which I am working for, before, during, and after the event, we still are on a limited budget so I still am finding ways to save and be frugal during this trip. Here are my tips:

1.) Plan where you are going, staying, and sleeping way before the trip. Take advantage of advance hotel and/or the convention pricing on local rooms, if you need one. Sign up for loyalty programs or AAA to get discounts. Also, if you are planning to visit other places on your trip, like The Creation Museum, check into package discounts (see their website for some). Shop around for the best deal!

2.) Buy your tickets for the convention/conference as early as possible. When registration opens online, usually months in advance, that's when tickets are the cheapest. Take advantage of those early-bird specials or when there is a coupon code to save a little extra. If there is specific convention, like Teach Them Diligently, that you are interested in, then sign up for the email subscription, so you don't miss the great deals on registration.

3.) Pre-make or pack as many meals as you can. Pack a cooler or two with as many drinks, snacks, and meals that it can hold... better too much than not enough. Food at conventions and conferences can be pricy. Being prepared will save you on impulse buying, when everyone is hungry or thirsty. If your room does not have a microwave, then bring one (we will be) along with mini-microwave meals. {I know, I know processed foods... blek!} In my defense, the hotel vending machines will have these same items... and I knew my kids would ask... so I bought them at the grocery store to save us money. While also buying healthy sides and drinks to go along with the meal.

4.) Save your gas credits, from shopping at your favorite grocery stores, for saving at the pump when you fill up to drive to the convention. Make sure your tires are pumped to the correct pressure and all your fluids are full to get the best gas mileage, to and from.

5.) Lastly, don't plan to buy all of your curriculum at these homeschool conventions, in the vendor hall. Why? Because, trust me, they are not the most frugal places to get what you want and need for your homeschool year. Use the time to look at all of the curriculum and compare. Then go home, pray, then find better deals elsewhere. Learn about planning your frugal homeschool year (with lots more to come on this subject). But then again, I will be handing out flyers and coupons for Bright Ideas Press... so maybe you can pick up a good deal from some vendors. ;-)

10 Positives I've Learned While Homeschooling

1.) To look at my own character ~ My kids are watching every second they are awake... even maybe when they are sleeping... nothing gets past them. So I needed to look at my actions and decide if those are the character qualities that I want to see in my kids. Being their parent and teacher... I need to set the example. Not always easy! And I'm always re-evaluating... especially if I see bad character in them.

2.) To be more patient ~ Both my children, who are easily distracted, need me to be patient with them while they work out these issues in themselves but also as they teach themselves to stay on task. Having a household routine, helps them the most. But also my patience with them... especially on days they are struggling more... is the key to success. One day at a time!

3.) To yell less ~ Shortly after I started homeschooling, I realized that raising my voice at my son didn't work to accomplish anything. It only scared him and caused him to react. I had to find a more responsive ways of dealing with my frustrations. Then I found gentle parenting and have been learning more and more about it every year. It's not that my children don't get consequences or that they don't hear the words, "No!"... it's just done in a way that does not wreck their self-esteem. I explain the reasons why and give them time to speak how they feel about it. It may not change the outcome but there is more peace in our lives with less yelling!

4.) To be more open minded ~ I don't pretend to know it all. I really thought I was ill equipped to homeschool my kids, like most moms out there. But when I realized that I don't need to know it all... that I can learn with my kids... and teach them to question things and find the answers by being open minded myself. We explore all the possible answers and accept the one that best matches our belief system. But we are also open minded to other possible idea changes down the road.

5.) To be more relaxed ~ I definitely have found in parenting and homeschooling that a schedule is a must... but I've also learned that being relaxed in the approach is necessary too. No schedule should be set in stone. And the kids have the freedom to have a say in things... even if they won't always get a vote. Also, being more relaxed means more peace in the home... which I like!

6.) To give more hugs ~ I want to create healthy intimacy in my children. I think it helps children feel secure in this unsecured world. My son says he must have 10 hugs a day... so more hugs it is!

7.) To listen more ~ Kids need our undivided attention. If my kids need to talk about something important, even if just to them, then I need to be available to listen. I didn't grow up in that type of home... so I need to make sure I am super sensitive to my kids' need for a listening ear. It's not that they are the center of the universe... sometimes things happen and conversations have to wait... but they know that I am here to listen... and at some point we'll talk about what concerns them.

8.) To be more organized ~ I was pretty organized before... but now with the added papers and books from homeschooling... I had to work a little harder on my organizational skills. Keeping things picked up and put away... with everything have it's own spot... helps to keep things organized at all times. Which in turn creates more peace... and less distractions in finding things.

9.) To always be honest ~ How can I expect my kids to be honest with me... if I were not honest with them? So as much as sometimes being too honest with my kids doesn't turn out how I like... I think having an open honest relationship with my kids, keeps things out and in the open. At first, my teen was hiding the fact that she was falling behind in her homeschool work. But now that she feels okay with sharing where she is at... she can just let me know and ask for help. It keeps our relationship open... and transparent... going both ways. I even often remind my kids that I'm not perfect and I will make mistakes.

10.) To keep moving forward ~ In life there are good days and there are bad days... we are no exception. On the bad days... I just remember we have to keep moving forward. Things are not always easy... and God made no promises that it would be... but we can rest assured that God works all things together for good (Romans 8:28)... for those who are called according to His purpose. I was called to homeschool... I will do everything in my power, with the help of God, to continue to homeschool my kids until they are adults. Taking things one day at a time!

Answers from Another Homeschooling Mom ~ Kendra from Preschoolers and Peace

We are back with another addition of Answers from Another Homeschooling Mom series. This week, I have Kendra Fletcher, of Preschoolers and Peace, to share with us her wisdom. She brings with her 16 years of homeschooling experience. I am so happy to have her... especially after my Free or Frugal Preschool at Home.

Give me a little history. When did you start home schooling your children and why?

We began homeschooling in 1997, when our oldest child was just 4. He was super precocious and already reading, both of which I felt were a recipe for disaster in a kindergarten classroom. I wanted to give him the best environment to learn in.

What is your homeschool philosophy/objective?

With two graduated (one graduating college this summer), we believe in this big endeavor called homeschooling. We’ve seen that slow and steady in the early years leads to concentrated high school years that can really prepare young adults to be hard workers, really interesting people, and vibrant lovers of the gospel.

What curriculum do you use in your homeschool, if any? If you create your own, how did you decide what to use?

We use a mix of what we’ve found to be truly quality curricula over the years. With an overarching casual, classical approach, we’ve loved everything from The Mystery of History to Write Shop to Science Shepherd to Khan Academy.

How do you schedule your homeschool year?

We value our California summers so much that we high-tail it from the middle of September to the middle of May, with few breaks in between. The goal is to spend as much time during the summer months at the beach as possible.

How much time do you spend on each lesson, in a day?

Because we’ve always had preschoolers or babies in our homeschool, we don’t really sit down for a concentrated school day. We do a couple of hours in the morning, take a break, then push through all afternoon while the littlest people in our home are napping. It can feel like a long day, and truthfully, I’m looking forward to the time when we can accomplish all of our schooling in the morning and then move on.

What do you spend the bulk of your time on or what do you think is most important for your children to learn?

It feels as if I spend the bulk of my time feeding and clothing people. No kidding! But in between the stuff of household management, I’d say we spend the most concentrated time on history. Out of our history studies flow geography lessons, literature picks, current event discussions, and artwork.

How did you know you were teaching the right curriculum or subjects? And how do you know your children have learned?

I initially followed The Well-Trained Mind when Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer published it in 1998. Soon into our classical schooling, I became comfortable enough to know what to keep and what to toss, which child needed a little more of this and which needed a little more of that.

I am confident my children are learning as I hear them making connections between the things we’re studying, the places we visit, the experiences we have, the books they’re reading, and the conversations we’re having.

What were your biggest obstacles along the way, so far? What did you do to overcome them?

The biggest obstacle has been hitting the halfway mark. I’ve been homeschooling now for 16 years and have 14 to go, so I think I’ve hit a mid-career slump. I recently came to grips with the fact that really, it’s okay to have a year (or two) when we scale back to the essentials and don’t worry about the fabulous projects everyone else is doing. There will be other years for baking a map of India out of sugar cookie dough.

If you could go back and tell yourself something, in the beginning, what would you say?

Don’t put your hope in homeschooling. The only thing that will save our children is the grace of God.

What’s the best advice you’ve heard along the way? Favorite quote?

Take care of yourself, mama. Put that oxygen mask on first!

Free or Frugal "Preschool" at Home {Top 10 Tips}

Some of you reading this, right now, might not consider your family to be homeschoolers. And that's okay! When my kids were preschool aged, I didn't either. You can preschool at home, and still go on to brick and mortar schools or you can continue schooling at home. For most of you, the choice is yours.

Here is how things worked out for us. My oldest child, now 18, went to a public preschool. My middle daughter, now 16, was technically homeschooled for preschool, as she went straight to kindergarten when she was 5. She went to daycare off and on while I was working part-time or going to school but she never attended "preschool" anywhere. She learned most of the "preschool" stuff at home. My youngest, now 9, went to a Christian Co-Op. I was there with him most of the time and even taught a class or two, to help the teacher. So, you see I've tried several different approaches to "preschool" and there are many more.

If you want to teach "preschool" at home I think there are some basic things you need to incorporate. Here are my Top 10 Tips for free or frugal preschool at home:

1.) Preschool is about playing! Include a lot of play time in your day. Let kids use their imagination. Have dress up stuff, play kitchen (measuring, pouring, and stirring can be fun), and build with blocks or other creative toys. Use what you have... you don't have to buy any curriculum for this.

2.) Read to your child every day! And add lots of books to your home. Also, read yourself. Kids will imitate you {their whole life} so be an example, and let them see you reading. Your love of reading will spill over onto them. Find frugal books at used books stores, used book sales, and tag sales. I don't ever remember paying full price for a book.

3.) Start a routine of visiting the library. Most libraries offer read aloud times while the older kids are in school. Although they know small children have a hard time sitting still, this gives them time to practice listening, to someone else talk, and following directions, if there is a craft. What a great way to hear new and interesting books.

4.) Teach large and small motor skills. Play outside with big balls, running, and jumping around, for large motor. For small motor skills, give your child scissors, crayons, pencils, small beads, and/or sensory boxes. Small motor skills is the beginnings of writing. Teach them to use their fingers... and exercise those muscles.

5.) Add music! Singing the ABC's and Old McDonald... will teach them their letters and animal sounds. Learning through music is fun. Also, add some classics from Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. Studies have shown the earlier you add classical music, the more developed the brain is.

6.) Teach letter recognition and the sounds that they make. Through flash cards, songs, and just practicing, your child will learn his/her A,B,C's. No extra curriculum needed for this, either.

7.) Teach number recognition. Again, through flash cards, songs, and practicing counting on a daily basis, at home and out in the community.

8.) Teach colors and shapes. This will be something your child will learn over time... probably through kindergarten but introduce them before preschool, just in everyday life. Talk about them while getting dressed {ie. "do you want to wear your red shirt with circles on it today?"} and while at the store.

9.) Add a foreign language. They say the earlier you teach your children a second language the easier they will pick it up. My kids know pieces from several languages... especially counting. We come from German descent, so my kids have been counting 1-10 {and more}, in German, for years. I took Spanish in high school... so they've learned some of that too. When we study another country we try to look up how to count in that country's language. We find most of that on YouTube for free.

10.) Don't stress! Your child has many more years to learn what he or she needs for life... they don't need to learn everything from age 3 to 5. Spending money on a boxed "preschool" curriculum is not going to get them any more prepared than not.... so save your money! Be creative and have fun! The best gift you can teach is the love of learning!

Answers from Another Homeschooling Mom ~ Richele from Under the Golden Apple Tree

We are back with another addition from the Answers from Another Homeschooling Mom series. Today, I am glad to share with you, from Under the Golden Apple Tree, Richele McFarlin. She lives right around the lake from me... so I am glad she is here sharing her wisdom with us, today.

The Questions and Answers:

Give me a little history. When did you start home schooling your children and why?

Homeschooling was an unexpected journey for me and my family. I fully expected that I would work and send my children to school like everyone else. My first child was born before I knew anyone who homeschooled. I envisioned homeschooling as confining and strange. As my first child approached school age, God whispered homeschooling in my heart. Resistant to the calling, I pushed the nudging aside. Clueless did not even begin to describe how I felt about beginning to homeschool. In the end, I surrendered to homeschooling with no regrets and ultimate gratitude. Since, God blessed us with three more children and after 11 years we are still homeschooling.

What is your homeschool philosophy/objective?

I believe education should foster a sense of creativity and curiosity. The fruit of education is picked from life not a textbook. I seek to raise God loving, independent thinking, and imaginative children through providing a tailor made education second only to discipling them in Christ.

What curriculum do you use in your homeschool, if any? If you create your own, how did you decide what to use?

I confess; I cheat on curriculum. I can never stay true to one source. My wandering heart indulges in finding just the right fit for each child. The overwhelming choices are controlled by knowing each child’s learning style. Trial and error are long time companions in our homeschool as well. I am never afraid to start or stop using something based on my child’s needs. Just like finding the right screwdriver, you find the right curriculum for your child. Textbooks, workbooks, and supplies are simply a tool not the heart of education.

How do you schedule your homeschool year?

The only traditional thing about my homeschool is the schedule. I start in August or September and end in June. We take time off according to sunny days {not snow days} and my husband’s vacation schedule.

How much time do you spend on each lesson, in a day?

Following a Charlotte Mason structure, I spend about 20 minutes on each subject for elementary students and 40 minutes for older children. We sometimes engage in special projects and allow interest to dictate how much extra time we devote each day.

What do you spend the bulk of your time on or what do you think is most important for your children to learn?

Academically, I focus on English and math because they are foundational subjects. Meaning, if you get nothing else done in a day {but English and math} you still had a good day. Since homeschooling centers on raising the whole child and not a child who can pass a test, the over arching focus, in my home, is on Christ and character.

How did you know you were teaching the right curriculum or subjects? And how do you know your children have learned?

The right track is not always smooth. A few bumps in the road should not scare you off the path. I continued to use a curriculum my son disliked due to the effectiveness of the study. I tossed a curriculum my child enjoyed due to lack of effectiveness. When enjoyment and effectiveness live side by side the curriculum is gold. Ultimately my goal rests in finding that treasure but panning for gold takes time and patience. Be encouraged, it does happen and it happens often. I rarely test for subjects other than math and spelling yet getting a sense for what my child masters has become second nature.

What were your biggest obstacles along the way, so far? What did you do to overcome them?

Personally, getting organized and staying motivated. There are some days I just don’t feel like homeschooling. I war with myself over loving organization and the inability to keep it up. I overcome a lack of motivation through prayer and doing my best to deny my flesh. As far as organization, it is a daily struggle unless I put together a solid schedule and post it where I can’t pretend I didn’t see it. My struggle gets cut down to every other day with this strategy.

With a child, the biggest obstacle is teaching my dyslexic child. Finding the right curriculum, having patience, and learning all I can, diffuses the frustration.

If you could go back and tell yourself something, in the beginning, what would you say?

It’s not all rainbows and unicorns. There are days you will wonder if you are failing your children. There are days you will desire to send your child to school. The urge to give up or beat yourself up for a variety of reasons is strong. Be encouraged, like an artist who never feels he expressed his passion properly, our passion is homeschooling and we will never feel it is enough because our students are the makeup of our heart. Never listen to outside voices but the small still voice inside that nudges you to keep going.

What’s the best advice you’ve heard along the way? Favorite quote?

My husband’s cousin once told me to discover my child’s learning style and reconcile it with teaching style. Once that is mastered, teach her how to embrace her learning style so she can learn from and express what she learned in a different style. For instance, if given a list of spelling words, the child would know how to study for mastery according to her learning style and pass the test regardless how the test was given by the teacher. The advice helped my visual/hands on child to learn regardless of curriculum or teaching style giving her ultimate flexibility and independence.

Answers from Another Homeschooling Mom ~ Stacey from Layered Soul

A couple weeks ago I felt God leading me to bring back the Answers from Another Homeschooling Mom series, that I started in 2012. Now that I am a little more known in the blogging community, I decided to ask fellow bloggers who have homeschooled their children for a longtime {by longtime, I mean 10 years or more}, to answer several questions that we all may have.

The Questions and Answers:

Give me a little history. When did you start home schooling your children and why?

I began the homeschool journey when my oldest was 4 years old, about 13 years ago. Since I was still new at parenting someone suggested that I teach him his ABCs since he was pre-school age. I had never thought about teaching academics. Then 3 weeks later when he started reading, I was forced to re-think his education. I started my homeschooling as the mother of a gifted child, and then by the 4th child, homeschooling special needs.

What is your homeschool philosophy/objective?

With my oldest two children I follow more of a “classical” approach. With my youngest two children I have found the “delight directed” approach best addresses their learning styles. Overall my homeschool objective is to figure out how they learn and how to adapt curriculum to meet their needs, because really I want them to grow up and move out.

What curriculum do you use in your homeschool, if any? If you create your own, how did you decide what to use?

I do create curriculum, not just for my homeschool, but for Bright Ideas Press as well. This year I am using Illuminations with All American History and Christian Kids Explore Chemistry. I love having all my kids on the same topics for these subjects. Math is my nemesis. I have 2 kids in Teaching Text Books for Pre-Calculus and Algebra 1. My third child is using Math-U-See Epsilon book. For my youngest I am writing my own using anything that works; It’s a work in progress.

How do you schedule your homeschool year?

Since my teens take classes outside of the home, over the years my schooling has reflected more of a traditional schedule. I use the summer to finish any subjects not completed, subjects that need reinforcement, and field trips.

How much time do you spend on each lesson, in a day?

Wouldn’t it be great if I could give you the secret to getting all subjects done by 3pm? Sorry I am still looking for that secret. We school during the day, at night, and on the weekends. Some days my kids get focused, or maybe motivated is a better word, and they quickly finish their lessons. Others days can be really long.

How did you know you were teaching the right curriculum or subjects? And how do you know your children have learned?

I know my children are learning when I see that look on their faces when they understand. My teens do take tests and receives grades. When my kids are progressing and mastering skills I know the curriculum is working.

What were your biggest obstacles along the way, so far? What did you do to overcome them?

The biggest obstacle is addressing the fact that my kids all have different learning styles and needs. I overcome the obstacle moment-by-moment and with a lot of Grace. I am walking the final weeks with my son who graduates in 6 weeks, I am researching how to help my youngest conquer addition and I am finding ways to encourage my daughter to complete her freshman year of high school.

If you could go back and tell yourself something, in the beginning, what would you say?

Homeschooling to graduation is a marathon, pace yourself. Homeschooling is a rollercoaster ride, some days are high and some days are low. Don’t let guilt over take you on the days you want the yellow bus to take them away. Homeschooling can overtake your life; don’t forget about your husband.

What’s the best advice you’ve heard along the way?

Gaps? Except them. Learning is a life long process.

Creating A Masterpiece Lessons in Watercolor

Creating A Masterpiece is a wonderful program to help your artistic child, or even your non-artistic child, create homeschool art that you will not believe! These multimedia art instructional videos are so easy to use because Sharon, your virtual instructor {an artist herself}, takes you step-by-step through the process. The end result is amazing!

Wise As The Owl

One afternoon, I pulled together four teens and an adult at various skill levels, to review Lessons in Watercolor: Wise As The Owl. This is a Level 5 DVD for more advanced painters. In this group, we had a couple beginners and a few experienced in watercolor. After they were all finished with their masterpiece, it was hard to tell the beginners from the experienced. They all did very well!

Honestly, everyone who made an owl that day said how much fun it was. The adult in the group, who has had experience with watercolors, said it was quite difficult. But she also stated how enjoyable the experience was. I think her owl turned out pretty good.

What the kids thought:

The teens thought the program was pretty cool. A couple needed to pause the DVD, to catch up with the more advanced students. Some build in pause times would have been nice, but then again this was a Level 5 program, that they were starting with. Had this been a Level 1 they may not have needed any pauses.

My own teen was not very experienced with these types of watercolor paints. She uses watercolor pencils and has used the washable watercolor cakes but this was her first real experience with true watercolor paints. I think she wants to do more. This DVD has given her the confidence she was seeking in order to try other painting projects. She is hoping to try the Lessons in Acrylic: Caribbean Lighthouse really soon.

CurrClick LIVE Online Homeschool Classes

When I was in college the majority of my classes were take online. Personally, I loved it. Not having to be somewhere at a certain time every week... or even several times per week. Not having to find a place to park. Not having those unhealthy vending machines right next to the classroom... seeking my dollars.

It wasn't long after I started homeschooling my son that I first heard about CurrClick LIVE Online Homeschool Classes. I immediately wanted to find out more... so I attended an Open House {these are hosted at different times of the year before a new batch of classes start... completely free}.

After realizing these CurrClick LIVE Classes are very similar to the online classes I took in college, I knew this was something I wanted to get my children involved in. So first we started with the {FREE} Lego Club to get them acclimated with the Adobe virtual classroom system. They picked up very quickly because it is so easy to use!

Then, we went on to a few one event only classes from Founders Academy and then to this short session Swashbuckler Vikings class.

If you are worried about your child online... let me tell you this is a safe environment! The teachers have passed background checks. And people outside of the teacher and class list are no allowed into the virtual classroom. Also, the teacher is monitoring the access, as well as the chat box to make sure participants are adhering to the class rules. Teachers have access to behind the scenes choices to do things like close the chat box {less distraction for the kids during teaching time}, private message, and muting of a participant {after a warning if needed}. This keeps the environment safe and conducive to learning for all of the students.

Also, teachers are very open to communication from parents. Most will give your child a grade, if requested. The teacher's email address is provided for you. They are here to work with you on teaching your child. The teachers I have met love teaching!

Some advantages to LIVE Online Homeschool Classes:

No need to find your shoes or even socks

No need to rush out the door to get somewhere

Online classes are recorded so you can watch a class if you miss

Wearing your pajamas, chewing gum {maybe blowing bubbles}, and eating {healthy} snacks during class is allowed

No need to brush your hair or teeth because no one can see you {or smell you} anyways

You can even go to class sick because germs don't spread through the screen ;-)

Another subject we found interesting, is the link between wasp nests and paper making. I know, I've always wondered where that idea of using wood to make paper came from. When we look at how the wasp creates their nest we see the similarities to that of paper making. How cool is that?

Having Faith Like George Müller

I cannot currently share all of the trials that our family is going through... but we are working on learning to have faith like George Müller.

George was not always the good Christian man who had faith like a mustard seed. Nope. He was once a thief and a cheat. If he wanted something he stopped at nothing to get it. Scamming, lying, and cheating was his way of life.

But one invitation to a Bible study, changed all of that. He decided to do God's work... and that is what he did. He became a missionary. His mission field was orphaned children in Bristol. After deciding to dedicate his life to doing God's work, his old life was gone and trusting God for everything was the only way.

Why is it that we can look back and see all of the wonderful things that God has done for us... yet we still don't trust that He'll continue to provide in the future? Whenever their is a trial, we worry. We wonder how is this going to all work out? Am I going to make it through this? And how?

Yet, haven't you noticed that every single time, things have worked out? Worked out for His good, of course. Maybe not perfect. Maybe not even what we expected. But taken care of none the less.

I've had many, many times in my life that I wondered how a bill or two was going to get paid. But it was always provided for. I've had many times that I've worried about a circumstance and how it was going to look in the future. I've even had times, even lately, that I didn't know how I was going to feed my kids. But every single time... God provided!

Now, if I can just remember to just ask God to meet our needs, feed us, and more, on a daily basis. Remember what He provided for George Müller... then I can remember He's willing to do the same for me.... I just have to ask. Then the important part... expect God to provide and not worry about it.
