Funny but I look at the S4 and think how modern it seems vs. my '86 944 Turbo. It has my '86 by only one year yet the oil girl's lineage traces back to 1978. Shouldn't my 944 Turbo feel like today's fashion in comparison instead of yesterday's bell bottoms? But it doesn't. The 928 is truly timeless. A spaceship landing on a cold bed of moon rocks that in my opinion could be a 2013 auto show model and still pull some tail.

The other day I got to thinking about my "30 for 30 in 30" list I'm building. What 30 cars I would buy for 30 grand today and still be happy in 30 years with the investment. The Lotus Elise came to mind. It certainly has some depreciation left to go but values have been holding pretty steady north of $20 grand. The one featured here has only 1,844 miles. On eBay for a Buy it Now of $32,500 in Marina Del Rey, California.

The profile got me. It looks like vintage racing standing still. The mag wheels are the right size and color so the 70s Lotus custom doesn't try to be modern day. The interior is terrific. The headliner piping, nice. After that it fizzles for me. They want $30,000 Buy it Now in Clinton, Washington which would seem reasonable if the car was sorted. But it's not. The carbs need a rebuild according to the seller even though the car runs. Check out the reveal for the front and rear.

The wing is too much for me and the smoked glass covered lights would do me better if they were clear. You can't see crap at night with smoke colored covers. Finally, the lover hood. The engine is in the back, what exactly are they venting?

2004 Kia Sorento EX

This post really isn't about the 2004 Kia Sorento I found on eBay. If it was, you might think I lost my pop rocks. It's actually about a news clip I read yesterday evening. Kia Motors America sold 39,291 units in January. That's more than they sold all year in 1996 when I was there. I remember total sales in 1996 to be 36,000 and some change. Incredible what Kia has done in the states. They are selling more in the worse sales month historically than they did all year, 16 years ago. Remember how you laughed and laughed at the Kia Sephia when it came to your town? That's all changed.

But let's hope for our sake that Clint Eastwood did a number for Imported from Detroit in the Superbowl spot because despite Kia having a plant in the states, profits still fly the coup.

2009 Audi 4.2L R8 Quattro

It was a few years ago that I had my first experience in the Audi R8. On the test drive, I had one ear getting bent by my colleague telling me to stop short shifting and get on it, while the other was listening to the reserved roar of the FSI direct injection, dry-sump V8. Forgive me for not wanting to get a speeding ticket on Crenshaw in the middle of Torrance. Cheap insurance rates are still my friends.

Once on the back roads, I gave it a good harumphing that harkened me back to a 1989 Porsche Carrera 4 floor fest. Both machines with peddle to the wood pull through corners as drifting is politely complimented by four-wheel-drive dynamics. Had these been rear-wheel-drive excursions something other than my friend might have been getting bent, most likely by the curb.

One day, this will be yesterday's exotic at Grand Cherokee prices. Too bad that's not today.

On eBay in Lima, Peru with a lot of detail but a zero feedback seller... hmmmm...

"This 1961 Land Rover has had only one owner since its arrival in Lima in 1968. Since then, it has been garaged in an immaculate facility and treated with care by its second owner. Every part of this Land Rover is in perfect working order.The entire body has been replaced with high quality aluminum, with the exception of the driver and passenger side doors. These two doors are exact replicas made from high quality steel in case of side impact. This also ensures a precision fit for the locking mechanisms. For added security new key cylinders and keys have been added to the driver side door, passenger side door, and the swinging rear door. I happen to be one of the people that think TVRs are pretty cool. It can be a bit of a trick sorting out where the parts come from if you don't know already. Imagine picking up a car with no history and trying to identify every piece as you need a bushing or gasket. What's nice about the old ones is that they qualify for some vintage racing such as the pre - '63 FIA GT.

I really love the old Jeeps especially something unique like this pickup. The fact that is powered by old fashioned Buick V8ness is a plus for me, cheap and available parts. The original blue was more of a teal as seen in the engine bay but I diggie on this color combo too. Probably needs a good hug to get it on the road again but shouldn't be far from a driver in short order. Tough to tell how bad the rust might be.

On eBay in Goshen, Indiana with no reserve and bidding at $1,050. Originally this was posted at a starting bid of $1,975 but there were no takers which was surprising.

2006 Shelby Daytona Coupe 1965

From what I recall, Pete Brock pretty much designed the Daytona Coupe on a napkin with a pencil, so to speak. The objective was to create something that wouldn't fly off the roads at high speed sans wind tunnel testing that wasn't an option at the time. He basically nailed the aerodynamics just by looking at it. There were only six original Daytona Coupes built and Phil Hill was among a big list of drivers of the first production one number CSX2287 The Prototype.

I would certainly love to have one of these replicas in my garage. I'd pick the more traditional powder blue with white over this color combination and put taller tires on smaller rims to give it a more old school finish. But either way I'd be happy with the sweetness.

A two-owner car with 62,000, "no hidden issues" and no reserve in Toronta, Canada. I realize there are a lot of choices for family haulers to get things but this one has a certain style that I've always liked. It's square, angular and masculine. The rake of the rear window and c-pillar with trident logo are particularly appealing as are the dual exhaust pipes. I can hear my wife now.

"1994 Hummer H1, bought two years ago with the stock 6.5 non-turbo diesel seized up, the previous owner's insurance would not pay to have engine replaced so they salvaged it out for some reason, and I bought as is. Truck had not been in any accident, just an engine failure. Stock diesel was removed, fuel injected 454 with twin T3/T4 turbos was installed. Chevrolet 81 454 block, standard bore, 2 bolt mains, square port heads, JDM T3T4 turbochargers, Professional Products Powerjection III EFI. Engine is mounted to solid motor mounts and bolted to stock GM 4L80E transmission with standalone computer, Optishift by Beaumann Electronics. Truck has a WARN 12,000lb winch. Truck comes with 6 spare cv/halfshafts, over 20 spare ball joints, tie rods, pitman arms, idler arms, 6 fuel cans, fuel cans mount to back and can be seen in video. Sitting on brand new Goodyear MTR's, still have the whiskers on them.When the diesel was removed all the wiring in engine bay was cut with it, so the new motor is wired to a temp ignition inside, new owner will have to hook up oem harness to get power to the lights, windows ect. Again, wiring is not finished, harness will need to be spliced back together... Turbo seals are worn out and will need to be rebuilt or replaced as they leak oil into the exhaust and smoke considerably. This truck is a really nice project for the right buyer who can turn wrenches and handle a project that is one of a kind, turns heads everywhere you go, way faster than the diesels. It's a project, an offroad machine, not a daily driven pavement princess. Not a gem by any means but is an awesome truck and would be one of a kind once finished."

Jimmy finally saw the shortcomings in his plan to revive the Hummer sans wiring and decided to buy something he could drive out of his backyard.

I've always thought that I'd make a good wheeler dealer. Buy low and sell high. The problem is getting attached to the cars and never wanting to sell. Or that fact that I'm no Ed. It would also help if I had a shop, a lift and experience too.

1965 Iso Rivolta

"Rare and desirable Iso Rivolta. Obviously needs a restoration, but is suprisingly original, complete, straight and not rusty. Same owner since 1970! Has A/C and desirable Borrani wire wheels. Underside of car, floors, door bottoms, engine bay, wheel wells, etc., are solid. I believe much of the paint is original. Stainless bumpers and glass are good. I have the other door panel but it's quite rough. Car has been parked since 1985 so assume a rebuild. At least it's a 327, which is far cheaper to redo than an Italian driveline."

These cars have such a classic Italian shape with American muscle underneath the skin. This one looks really complete with mirrors, bumpers, trim and original radio in the dash.

My continued search for my brother-in-law's up north pickup has me finding some good looking rigs. This one is an original owner, California born and raised truck with only 57,000 miles, 4 speed, 4x4. I could do without the huge tow mirrors on the side. But I've always loved the wagon wheels. This one looks particularly nice with slight lift and big tires.

1992 Lexus 300SC - Toyota Supra Twin Turbo

This car is one of the reasons I founded Motor Car Market magazine. The Lexus 300SC came with a little known straight six and manual transmission and I wanted to make sure I never forgot that detail. Naturally the tuner community took notice and performed things like Supra Twin Turbo engine swaps or simply hyped out the Lexus engine a bit. The Lexus engine from my recollection is not the same block as the famed Supra straight six so most SCs still have their parts intact.

This one has a Supra engine and looks well done. It would be a screamer sleeper with a claimed 400+ horsepower. Yet, I'm always leery of someone who only owned the car for several months, did all the engine swap work and then decided to sell the car. But he claims a need for a SUV in the Utah snow as the reason.

1969 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 (Canyon, Texas)

This one sounded like it was well taken care of by a guy who knew how to turn a wrench. Most recently, the crank pulley came off it which was press fitted on the earlier models before being bolted on. The owner hasn't gotten around to pulling the radiator to fix it but the engine fired right up just the same.

Interior Rhino lined. Lots of media blasting and an attempt to paint it in the olive Toyota army green, which is the heritage of the FJ when the Japanese reverse engineered a Jeep after the war.

"Selling my 68 Travelall Custom 3/4 ton 2wd. All original down to the hubcaps. 345 V8 with a 5 speed transmission. Factory AC. Power brakes. Body is in very good shape except for a few hail dents. Some glass neds replaced on right side. Always stored inside since hail damage. Sorry for the bad pictures."

I'm still looking out west for something that my friend can tow home in his empty trailer. I found this on Craigslist Amarillo, Texas and decided to call. After about five minutes, I mentioned my friend with the trailer heading his way. "Yeah, I think I talked to that guy yesterday." What? Really? Yes, my friend Roy had called on the same truck the day before me and we never connected on it. Funny we were in sync with what type of "find" we would wrangle in Texas, apparently big-rust-free-tonnage.

Today, Roy made it over take a look. The guy seemed a little off but Roy plugged along in the usual manner of cutting straight to the lowest price. The hail damage beat up the windshield, passenger window and cracked the huge wrap around side glass. Not cheap fixes but the price accounted for this thought the owner.

However, upon filling one of two tanks with fresh gas, fuel leaked to the ground. Ironic since it's Texas. The second tank held and after three years, three squirts of ether and three minutes of cranking, the motor fired. Roy took a couple laps around the building. 2012 - Detroit Auto Show

Last week we went to the Detroit Auto Show during Tuesday's press days on Motor Car Market magazine passes. Yeah, I know it's suppose to be called the North American International Auto Show. But that was before Detroit staged a comeback, Chrysler got Imported from Detroit and Ford made it through the dip without taking a dime from the debt-queens. It'll always be the Detroit Auto Show to me.

You guys must laugh and laugh at me for posting these cars. But I like them and won't let your snickering deter my desire from wanting one!

At only 23,000 miles this would be one to get and hold on to. The starting reserved bid price of $8,500 is about all I'd want to spend but this dealer is looking for more. Take a guess where the previous owner died leaving this behind.

this beautiful car is one of the rare Collectors Series Mark V's

produced in 1979. A special edition car offered in only two colors,

2,040 were produced in White. These cars were Lincoln's follow-up

to the 1978 Diamond Jubilee cars and carried the same bucket

seat and console configurations as the Jubilees. These cars included

special gold grill inserts, color keyed turbine wheels and Collector

Series gold tri-pinstriping. They also included a special panel

that deleted the port hole windows, making it different than other Marks.

This car is fresh out of long term storage in dry Texas and has traveled only 23K

miles over the last 32 years. The cosmetic and mechanical condition is excellent...
