“Alive,” the new single from Aussie synthpoppers Empire Of The Sun is as much a grand and absurd spectacle. as it is a song; the group made good and sure of that with the video. They’re all over the festival circuit this summer, which means they’ll play the song live a fuckton of times. And one of the first of those times came earlier this week at the House Of Blues in Dallas. The performance was heavy on lights and dancers and costumes, and you can watch a pro video of it below.

Jobs were passed down generationally between strangers. One guy became an editor at a magazine, but used to be a music buyer at Mondo Kim’s on St. Marks. My friend got the job and started a shoegaze band with a tall guy named Brad that had a huge beard and a couple large cats. Brad moved away and then two different guys joined and the band got way darker. It felt like every musician in New York was in Black Dice at some point. Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio produced a record for Telepathe, a band that used to be a different band. I got an internship at The FADER through a kid I sort of knew that went to Columbia who had one before me. He really liked Ryan Adams. I liked Ryan Adams less, which worried me for some reason.

Mixtape Of The Week: Tree Sunday School II: When Church Lets Out

The Chicago rapper/producer Tree calls his style “soul-trap,” and that’s a better genre descriptor than a critic nerd like me could come up with. Seen from a certain angle, Tree is an inheritor to his city’s Common/early Kanye conscious-rap throne. His music can be placid and thoughtful, full of doomed narrative and poverty-contemplation and emotional catharsis. He does things with samples that could’ve made No I.D. or young Kanye proud; check the way he resurrects the old chipmunk-soul production trick to turn Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” into a disorienting banger on “The King.” And he’s structured his entire new mixtape Sunday School II: When Church Lets Out around the idea of a morning at church; it actually has firmly demarcated mini-suites, and it works toward a structural coherence that even the most ambitious mixtapes almost never try. But Tree isn’t a preacher or a striver or a struggle-rapper, and he damn sure isn’t an antidote to his city’s nihilistic drill scene. Rather, he comes off like a wizened older cousin to the kids in that scene. His drums punch almost as hard as Young Chop’s, his threats are just as vivid and bloodyminded as Chief Keef’s, and his voice is a demonic terror all its own.

The Lonely Island – “SEMICOLON” (Feat. Solange) Lyric Video

It is yet another #WACKWEDNESDAY for the Lonely Island and today they’ve released an attempted-grammar lesson called “SEMICOLON” featuring guest vocals from Solange. Utilizing the Drake-popularized lyrical devise of hashtag rap (example: “we run the game; umpire”), the four try to explain how the polarizing punctuation mark works. Except they do not at all and their teacher, voiced by Maya Rudolph, makes sure they know it. Come for the punchlines (there’s one about A.L.F.!), but, seriously, do not use this as grammar gospel. Watch A New Boards Of Canada Video Screened In Tokyo Yesterday

The promotion for Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories was innovative, but it’s certainly rivaled by the mysterious roll-out for Boards Of Canada’s first album in seven years, Tomorrow’s Harvest. The first preview of new music came via six single edition 12″s released on Record Store Day that went from a crate-digger’s goldmine to being sold for the price of one of Diddy’s children on eBay. Yesterday, more music from the Scottish ambient duo was unveiled a la Kanye West on a screen in Tokyo. Check out the footage below.

Watch Jessie Ware & The xx Cover Modjo & Stardust In Berlin

At Berlin’s Night + Day Festival over the weekend, the xx invited Jessie Ware, their peer in warm, poised, inward-looking London club music, to the stage for something very cool. Over the track from Jamie xx’s “Sunset” edit, they fused together two circa-2000 rave classics: Modjo’s “Lady (Hear Me Tonight)” and Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You.” The xx handled the “Lady” hook, while Ware sang the everliving hell out of “Music Sounds Better With You,” and the whole thing just sounded awesome. The Berlin crowd, bless them, knew both hooks well enough to sing along. Watch a prettily filmed, pristinely recorded video of the performance below.

People Get Ready – “Zelda Maria” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

Brooklyn’s People Get Ready are about to digitally release the Zelda Marina EP, a follow-up to their 2012 self-titled debut. “Zelda Marina” was the album’s second single and the EP that it is being re-released on will sort of function as a companion piece to understanding the band’s process as musicians and performers, including demos, remixes, and instrumentals. For the title track, the group has crafted an experimental visual, heavy on movement and image-manipulation. The dancing was choreographed by Guggenheim Fellow Tere O’Conor, while PGR founder Steve Reker worked with video artist Ty Flowers to edit the images. Check it out below.

Watch Grimes, Frank Ocean, Tanlines At The 2013 Webby Awards

The 17th Annual Webby Awards went down last night at Wall Street’s cavernous Cipriani’s. Hosted by Patton Oswalt, the ceremony featured a performance by Tanlines, who played their song “All Of Me,” as well as the presentation of awards to the previously-announced winners, including Frank Ocean and Grimes. Ocean was unable to attend, so he accepted via video while Grimes’s was given to her by a fawning Fred Armisen. Beacon – “Drive” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

For Beacon’s track “Drive” from their debut full-length The Ways We Separate, the BTW alumni enlisted 101lbs. Pictures to create a smoky, dark clip. But instead of crafting something run-of-the-mill, they drew from another genre’s tropes. Says Will Joines of 101, “I was interested in taking elements of a R&B video and making something darker and more mysterious. The goal was to suggest and imply while leaving room for the audience to insert their own story and ideas.” Check out the video and fill in the blanks below.

Daft Punk – “Horizon”

Oh hey, new Daft Punk! The French robots spent so many years putting together the immaculately crafted new album Random Access Memories that it only stands to reason that there would be material left over. And a Japanese edition of the album has a bonus track, called “Horizon,” that points in a couple of the directions the album could’ve gone. The track is a meditative, instrumental, half-acoustic reverie that recalls nothing so much as Daft Punk’s onetime French contemporaries Air. It’s awfully pretty, if entirely baffling, and you can stream it at the No BPM Limit Tumblr.

Julia Holter – “World” Video

Last year, the Los Angeles singer and producer Julia Holter released Ekstasis, an album of gauzy and elliptical and weirdly comforting experimental pop music. That LP turned out to be very valuable in helping some of us slow down and breathe and chill the fuck out from time to time. Later this summer, she’ll follow that album up with a new one, her first proper studio effort, called Loud City Song. And now she’s shared the slow, warm, beautiful opening track “World” in the form of a flickering, elusive video from the director Rick Bahto. Stream Giorgio Moroder’s First Ever DJ Set

The pioneering Italo-disco genius Giorgio Moroder, currently going through a popular renaissance thanks in part to his appearance on Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, is 73, and he came up in the era when producers weren’t also expected to serve as DJs. But last night at the Brooklyn club Output, Moroder played his first-ever DJ set. The set was part of the Red Bull Music Academy series, and Moroder had the younger DJ and “musical director” Chris Cox helping him out; he wasn’t doing it all himself. Together, they played many of Moroder’s greatest hits, like the Donna Summer songs “I Feel Love” and “Bad Girls” and his own music for Midnight Express. They also worked in newer tracks like “Racer” and the Daft Punk collab “Giorgio By Moroder.” Moroder introduced himself via vocoder and added bits and pieces, including one keyboard solo, to the music. And you can hear a pristine recording of the entire DJ set below.

Diarrhea Planet – “Separations”

The four-guitar Nashville punk monster Diarrhea Planet has lately cultivated a rep as one of the best, most fiery young live bands on the touring circuit. If their revolting band name is still (understandably) putting you off, their live cover of “Born To Run” with Titus Andronicus frontman Patrick Stickles might be enough to change your mind. And later this summer, they’ll release the sophomore album I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams. The first single is the ragged, anthemic “Separations,” and you can hear it below.

If you’ve got a gift for metalworking and/or LED-light programming, you may be missing your calling; you could be raking in a ton of money by helping people realizing their dreams of transforming into Daft Punk robots. A new Wall Street Journal article explores the secondary market of artisans who are making facsimiles of Daft Punk’s robot helmets. According to the piece, there’s now a small but dedicated circle of fans willing to drop four figures on eBay for the privilege of looking like the two members of Daft Punk. From the article, it’s pretty clear that Daft Punk are leaving a ton of money on the table by not selling their own versions of those helmets. The entire piece is pretty fascinating, and you can read it here, though the above WSJ dot-drawing of Guy Bangalter is clearly the best thing about it.

Watch Charli XCX Cover Backstreet Boys

The Backstreet Boys’ luminous ballad “I Want It That Way” is almost indisputably the single greatest song to come out of the teenpop era, and if you’re still resisting its charms 15 years later, this is a pretty good morning to reconsider. Yesterday, during an in-store performance at Chicago’s Borderline Music, the British singer Charli XCX, who released her own album of pretty amazing pop songs just last month, busted out a charmingly low-key synthpop cover of the song. There’s nothing ironic about this particular cover; she’s radiating pure love the entire time. Also, I love how she handles the key change. Não, não se trata de um statement da monarquia portuguesa. É "só" a chegada de uma nova banda. Chama-se Os Príncipes e são obra de Maria Mónica e Jorge Queijo (Torto, entre outros). Eles dizem que "não há regras nem estilo definido", eles avisam que "as músicas aparecem naturalmente e da mesma forma são disponibilizadas ao público". A primeira já pode ser ouvida - e vista - aqui em baixo.
