Some great ideas for games that kids can have fun with in the classroom are all about the gross factor. The grosser and creepier the better for some, as often times engage kids that really enjoy being creative.

First up, The Brain Game. This is a fun game where you pick through a “brain” to figure out what’s in it. You can create this easily yourself. Make some jello and fill it with a variety of items, like gummy worms and other gummy candies, some small candy and trinkets and other items. Tell the children to root around in the bowl of jello (call it a “brain” if this will get the kids more interested) to figure out what’s in it. It’s goopy and messy and kids love it. Best yet, color the jello black so it’s too dark to see what’s inside.

In that same, or similar realm, kids love the spaghetti game. Be sure they are wearing a smock over their clothes or are wearing play clothes before playing this game. Make a big bowl of spaghetti and fill it with all kinds of items, like plastic bugs, gummy worms and other items that might feel a bit strange. Make the children feel around in the bowl of spaghetti and identify the items they feel. Once they are done and cleaned up, have them list as many items as they can remember. Whoever gets the most items listed (and right) gets a prize. Spaghetti, anyone?

Another similar game that’s always popular is to take a cardboard box and paint it black, both the inside and outside. Carve a small hole in the top, really just large enough for the children to get their hands into, and fill the box with a variety of items. They can be related to Halloween (like a small pumpkin) or not (wrapped Tootsie rolls or a tiny toy car). Have the children guess what’s inside the box and award the box itself to the child who guesses the most number of items correctly. To make this more on the gross and silly, be sure to include some items that might feel like body parts or brain matter.

Kids love creating silly fictional stories, often with absurd plot lines. Halloween is the optimum time to let them run wild with their imaginations. Have them spend a bit of time writing out the scariest story they can think of. Some children might need some direction not to make it ridiculously grotesque, so use caution with these children in your clarification of this assignment. Once the stories are written, have the children hand them in and then have a guest reader for each one of them. Each child will come to the front of the class and read the story with as much dramatization as they can muster. Once the story is read, everyone has to guess who wrote the story. The writer should play along, otherwise everyone will know it was their story! The winner is the child who wrote a story so intriguing and unusual that nobody knew it was his or hers!

Kids love the word find games when you give them a word or words relating to a holiday or something else and have them find words within those words. In this case, give them Halloween-related words and ask them to find as many scary words as they can. For example, you might give them the word “Halloween” and see how many scary words they can make from the letters. Or you could give them a series of words and let them rearrange the letters in all of the words to create scary words, or even create a story from the scary words. Put a time limit on this game and award a prize for the child who creates the most words in the least amount of time.

Homemade Face Paint Recipe

1 tsp. cornstarch
1/2 tsp. water
1/2 tsp. cold cream
Food coloring (variety of colors)
Sm. containers (one for each color paint)
Sm. paintbrush

Stir together the cornstarch and cold cream until well blended. Add water and stir. Add food coloring, one drop at a time until you get the desired color. Experiment with different colors. Pain on with a paint brush. Store in covered containers.

HALLOWEEN FACE PAINT

Cornstarch
Food coloring
Shortening (Crisco)

Mix together and paint face.

While pumpkin seeds are featured in the recipes of many cultures, they are a special hallmark of traditional Mexican cuisine. Pumpkin seeds have recently become more popular as research suggests they have unique nutritional and health benefits.

Making Toasted Pumpkin Seeds

Remove the seeds from the pumpkin’s inner cavity and wipe them off with a paper or cloth towel. Spread them out evenly on a paper bag and let them dry out overnight.

When they are ready, place them in a single layer on a cookie sheet and light toast them in a 160-170°F (about 75°C) oven for 15-20 minutes. By roasting them for a short time at a low temperature you can help to preserve their healthy oils.

Some Great Serving Suggestions:

- Add pumpkin seeds to soups and stews.

- Sprinkle pumpkin seeds on top of mixed green salads.

- Add chopped pumpkin seeds to your favorite hot or cold cereal.

- Sprinkle chilli powder or paprika on top with a little sea salt and enjoy alone.

The process should be started by making several dozen sugar cookies. If you want to cheat on this, there are many cut and back options designed for Halloween you can use. When you have your cookies done, set them aside, you are now ready to begin the preparation for an activity!

Activity # 1

Begin to make bowls of toppings people can place on their cookies. You should have a number of tubs with icing available. Make sure you have a few orange and black, with a sprinkling of other colors. You then will need to gather your creepy ingredients.

Break up some candy corn for broken teeth, have some gummy worms available, and even consider making some dirt from Oreo cookies. While you are going through the side project, think about what your guests might find fun.

When everyone is together, have a challenge to see who can make the creepiest cookie in less than 5 minutes. Let them tear into the options and then have a prize that they can win.

Activity # 2

For this activity, make a sample cookie that people will need to make, and place the ingredients in front of each chair that it will take. Allow everyone to look at the cookie, and then blindfold them, and have them remake the cookie with their hands. Be sure you have creepy feeling items to use.

When they are done, have them remove the blindfold and check out their work. The best cookie wins a prize!

• 1 box of Duncan Brownie mix

Hogwarts’s Banana Cheesecake Pudding

• Bananas
• Cream cheese 8 oz
• Sweetened condensed milk
• 2 boxes instant vanilla pudding
• Vanilla wafers
• Cool whip
• Milk

Make your banana pudding according to the box. In a separate bowl, add your cream cheese (softened), small can of condensed milk, and one bowl of cool whip and whip with a beater until well blended. Then add your pudding and blend it all together until blended well. Using a large serving bowl, you will want to layer your bowl with banana’s and vanilla wafers. You pour pudding and layer it again until all pudding is layered. Top it with bananas and wafers and your pudding is ready to serve.

Hagrid’s Deviled Eggs

• 1 to 2 dozen large white eggs
• Salt
• Salad dressing
• Mustard
• Paprika
• Cilantro

You will need to boil your eggs in salt water until fully cooked. The salt water helps to peel your eggs with ease. After you peel all your eggs, you will want to cut each egg in half, putting all of the yolks in a bowl. After all your eggs are cut you will need to smash up your yolks until is well crumbled. You then add about one or two heaping tablespoons of salad dressing and about two small squirts of mustard. Add a dash of paprika and blend until well blended. You then can put all your mixture in your eggs, filling all egg halves. Then top each egg with a small piece of fresh cilantro and sprinkle paprika.

All of these are simple to make recipes and easy to serve for any Halloween event. These are my kid’s favorite recipes and I am positive all kids everywhere will enjoy. • Make Halloween cupcakes with your kids and try buying a scary or creepy baking kit. You can buy some that have many cool designs and treats that are Halloween inspired. Try putting your own creativity in it.
• Make deviled eggs and color them red. This makes a creepy fun snack and you can pretend the red is blood. Kids really like these and it gives your party something different that is also unique.
• Use food coloring in your Halloween foods this makes it fun and different. It also gives it a more Halloween feel.
• Another fun food idea for Halloween is nachos and cheese. You can color your nachos a fun color and watch the faces of your kids and friends.
• Sandwich’s with a kick to them are a great party food. You can make fun sandwiches by adding details to them like putting a toothpick through them and then putting ketchup as if the sandwich is bleeding.
• If you like gummy eyeballs, you can make a necklace of eyeballs for your guests to wear and eat as well. You simply use a toothpick and tie a string on it then you thread your eyeballs through on to the string. It is fun and easy and your kids would love helping with it to.

Spooky Worms in a Cold Cauldron Punch

• Gummy worms

Bloody Mary’s Juicy Drink

• Red vegetable fruit juice
• Twizzler sticks, red and black

With this drink, you just pour your juice in a chilled glass and add your twizzler sticks. Then it is ready to serve.

Witch’s Ice Cream Brew

• Mint chocolate chip ice cream
• Milk
• Green sprinkles

You simply put this all in a blender and add milk. Blend well until it is creamy and then pour into your cups. Top it with green sprinkles and it is best served with a straw.

Pumpkin’s Favorite Drink

• Orange soda
• Orange slices
• Bag of ice
• Candy corn

You put your orange soda and the ice into a blender and blend until a thick slush. Pour your drink into a cup and place an orange slice on the rim of your cup. Stick your candy corn into your orange slush and it is ready to serve.

Spooky Spider Juice

• Hot Chocolate with marshmallows
• Hot water
• Small Halloween colored marshmallows
• Whip cream
• Caramel

For this fun drink, you will need to prepare your hot chocolate as preferred. After you get your hot chocolate prepared, place a pinch of your marshmallows in the bottom of your cup. Pour your hot chocolate directly in your cup on top of the marshmallows. Squirt your ready whip on top and place a couple marshmallows on top. Drizzle with caramel on top.

Halloween inspires many ideas and creations. Many kids have tried these drinks and they loved every one of them. This is something fun for the whole family.

Aquarium Jello Recipe

Ingredients

* new goldfish bowl or clear glass container
* red hots, gumballs or Jelly Belly gravel beans
* gummy fish or swedish fish
* parsley sprigs (these make great plants but the taste is not the best)
* blue Jello
* ice cubes
* cold water

Directions

1. Start with a clean, new goldfish bowl or clear glass container. In the bottom place Jelly Belly beans, gumballs, or red hots to look like rocks.

2. Mix up as much blue Jello as your bowl will hold. Mix using ice cubes & cold water instead of the cold water called for on the box. Pour this into the bowl over a knife blade or something to keep from disturbing the gravel.

3. If you want it to have ‘seaweed’, poke a couple of pieces the parsley or something similar down into the gravel.

4. When the whole thing starts to jell, use a wooden skewer to push gummy fish into different parts of the bowl.

5. For an added touch of fun you can include plastic ships, divers, treasure chests or creepy underwater sea cretaures.

Turnover of the Graves

Turnover of the Graves is always a winner because it is fast and easy to make. Buy several turnovers that are rectangular shapes. Don’t panic if the store has none; these are the apple and cherry pies sold two for a dollar at the biggest fast food restaurant in the country. Line a 10″ x 12″ box top with aluminum foil or waxed paper. Take a scoop or two of any chocolaty cereal, and spread it on top of the lining to make the dirt for the graveyard.

Shake some coconut flakes in a couple of drops of green food coloring. Once the coconut is green, set it aside till you are ready to plant the grass. Put the turnovers in the graveyard. Cut them across their width to get 5 pieces each. Melt 20 – 25 large marshmallows in the microwave with a tablespoonful of butter or margarine (about 30 seconds). Stir and then put a drizzle on each grave and toss a bit more chocolaty cereal on top. The marshmallow drizzle holds the dirt loosely, since you want the graves exposed. Scatter the grass over and around the graveyard.

For a finishing touch, add a tombstone by placing a gumdrop at the head of each grave. Make a few piles of chocolaty cereal to indicate digging.

Directions:

* Cream together cream cheese, powdered sugar and softened butter.
* Mix 3 1/2 cups milk and instant pudding for 2 minutes and add 12 oz. Cool Whip.
* Add the mixtures together.
* Place Oreo cookies in large ziploc bag and crush to desired “dirt” texture with a rolling pin.
* Put 1 1/2 inches of cookie crumbs on the bottom of the cauldron (lined with aluminum foil) and layer the pudding mixture and crumbs. End with pudding mixture. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
* Just before serving, add 1 more inch of cookie crumbs and decorate with gummy worms, gummy spiders, and other creepy items.
