One of the very first mini book Advent calendars I remember is The Usborne Advent Calendar Book Collection.  I’ve recommended it before and I know many of the Growing Book by Book readers have gotten it. The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Beauty and the Beast, and Puss in Boots are just some of the mini books in this calendar.

If you ever have held a Golden Book in your hands,  you’ll appreciate the 24 mini books in Little Golden Books Advent Calendar. Titles include Christmas in the Country, The Night Before Christmas, and 22 more.  Each little book has the iconic gold spine.

Behind each flap is an activity to do from wrapping gifts to making a wish list. Perfect for the preschool crowd.

Crunch the Shy Dinosaur by Greg Pizzoli invites listeners to talk in different volumes throughout the book.  Great story and great interaction make this a win of a read-aloud.

Bunny Slopes by Claudia Rueda is great fun.  Help the bunny ski down the slopes.

If your kids love The Three Little Pigs, you have to get Huff and Puff also by Claudia Rueda.  Can you help the wolf blow the pigs’ houses down?

Get ready for lots of yelling and silliness when you read I Say Ooh You Say Aah by John Kane.  My kids have asked for this one over and over.

Play This Book by Jessica Young is a fun interactive introduction to instruments including a piano, trombone, drums, and cymbals. Kids get to “play” each instrument in the book.

Do you remember Mix it Up! and Press Here?  The author of these two awesome books is has more like Let’s Play!  His books are a wonderful combination of art and imagination.

Touch the Brightest Star by Christie Matheson follows the footsteps of one of my favorite interactive books, Tap the Magic Tree.  This time, children interact with the nighttime sky as sunrise approaches.  It’s a beautiful book perfect for bedtime.  Also check out Matheson’s Plant the Tiny Seed.

Don’t Touch This Book by Bill Cotter is the newest book with Larry the lovable monster from the super fun, Don’t Push the Button. This time, he does not want you to touch his book.  Kids will love not listening to Larry and driving him crazy while they DO touch the book.

Imagine when a fly gets in your house.  In The Fly, that pesky little bugger eludes your every swat.  Follow the fly through the book and hear what life is like from his perspective.  It’s also super fun because the kids get to slap every page.

Tickle Monster by Edouard Manceau works really well for kids who love monsters and those who need help not being scared of the imaginary creatures.  Children are encouraged to tickle each part of the monster’s body to turn it into something else. For example, tickle the horns and they turn into the moon in the sky.  Eventually, kids tickle away the monster into a picture of a house and car outside.  The last pages tell the monster that if he returns, the child will just tickle him away again.

My kids had a blast with If You’re a Robot and You Know It illustrated by David Carter.  First, kids get to sing the familiar tune with a whole new robotic twist.  Plus, they get to interact with all the fun pull tabs and other interactive components of the book.  This one is probably my kids favorite on the list.

Little Penguin Gets the Hiccups by Tadgh Bentley is the tale of a little penguin who can’t get rid of his hiccups.  Readers are encouraged to help give the penguin a good scare to get rid of those pesky hiccups.  Grab your earplugs as the kids try to scare the penguin!

The Tiger is fast asleep in Don’t Wake Up the Tiger by Britta Teckentrup.  Readers have to help keep him that way throughout the story.

Prepare to hunt down the source of the smell in Something Stinks by Jonathan Fenske. Get ready for some interactive stinky fun as we try to help skunk figure out what stinks in the story. Is it you? Is it me?

Whether you watch Sunday football, Monday night football, or Thursday night football, books can be enjoyed any day of the week!

November 6th: National Nachos Day

Learn all about the person behind that favorite snack food in Nacho’s Nachos: The Story Behind the World’s Favorite Snack by Sandra Nickel.

November 7th: Hug a Bear Day

A little boy needs his bear.  Can you spot the bear?  Try it out in Where is Bear? by Jonathan Bentley.  And, get ready for a surprise ending.  This is such a fun read-aloud for circle time.

November 8th:  STEAM/STEM Day

The Invention Hunters: Discover How Machines Work by Korwin Briggs is a fun fictional story about a group of museum curators who are in search of pieces to add to their museum. And, they find some very interesting specimens at the construction site. Mixed with the story is information about the items they find.

November 9th: Go to an Art Museum Day

Parker Looks Up by Parker Curry is a touching story of a little girl who looks up in the museum and admires someone who looks like her- Michelle Obama. It’s based on a true story.

November 10th: Sesame Street Day

Sesame Street is a classic so let’s go with a classic Little Golden Book here.  Read that childhood favorite There’s a Monster at the End of This Book.

November 11th: Veterans Day

Veterans: The Heroes in Our Neighborhood is by Valerie Pfundstein. The men and women who protect our country are the same people who live and work in our communities. Meet the true real-life heroes living in your neighborhood in this rhythmic story.

November 12th: Fancy Rat and Mouse Day

This series used to be a hit in my classroom full of photographs.  Check out Mouse by Barrie Watts.

November 13th: World Kindness Day

Small acts of kindness can change the world and that’s just what Sophie learns in Can Sophie Change the World? by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace.

November 14th: National Spicy Guacamole Day

Little Red Hen wants to make guacamole in Holy Squawkamole! by Susan Wood. However, Armadillo, Iguana, Coati, and Snake have no interest in collecting the ingredients needed to make the tasty dish. A recipe for guacamole is included in the back of the book along with a glossary. 

November 15th: National Recycling Day

Kenya’s Art by Linda Trice is the story of a little girl on spring break who is looking for something to do. She discovers that she can use her broken and outgrown toys to create a recycled masterpiece.

November 16th:  Button Day

The Good for Nothing Button! by Charise Mericle Harper is from the Elephant & Piggie Reads series.  Yellow Bird has a button.  It’s a good-for-nothing button.  Or, is it?

November 17th: National Homemade Bread Day

I love making bread. Bubbie & Rivka’s Best-Ever Challah (So Far!) by Sarah Lynne Reul is a multigenerational story on the quest to find the perfect challah bread recipe.

November 18th: National Princess Day

The Storytelling Princess by Rafe Martin is the story of a princess who refuses an arranged marriage. She will choose her own prince. The princess enters a storytelling contest and wins more than she was expecting.

November 19th: National Play Monopoly Day

You’ve probably played it many times, but do you know how the game, Monopoly was invented? Pass Go and Collect $200: The Real Story of How Monopoly was Invented by Tanya Lee Stone tells the story.

November 20th: Future Teachers of America Day

Have you ever seen a teacher out in the wild? My students were always so surprised to see me at the grocery store. Rescuing Mrs. Birdley by Aaron Reynolds is a hilarious read about finding your teacher out of her natural habitat and the lengths a student will go to return her where she belongs.

November 21st: National Gingerbread Cookie Day

The Gingerbread Boy by Richard Egielski is one of my favorites. This version takes place in NYC and the gingerbread boy passes construction workers and even hits the subway. The illustrations are beautiful.

November 22nd: Humane Society Anniversary Day

Madeline Finn and the Shelter Dog by Lisa Papp is a sweet story about a little girl who learns about shelter animals and decides to make a difference in their lives by collecting towels for bedding and bringing the community children in to read to the animals.

November 23rd: Eat a Cranberry Day

Usher in fall with Time for Cranberries by Lisl H. Detlefsen which shows how cranberries are harvested.

November 24th: Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day

Find your gifts, explore, experiment, and try are just a few of the messages you’ll take away from This Could Be You by Cindy Williams Schrauben.  Discussion questions are included in the book along with reframing statements.  Plus, a bonus mirror for kids to see themselves in the book.

November 25th: National Play Day with Dad

The Way to Treasure Island by Lizzy Stewart is the story of a father and daughter on a treasure hunt. Matilda and her dad are best friends, but they are completely different. However, each of their strengths compliments the others making for truly adventurous memories. Turns out that sharing experiences with others can be even more meaningful than attempting them alone.

November 26th: International Cake Day

Marigold is a cat with a personality. Marigold Bakes a Cake by Mike Malbrough is a funny tale of a cat who just wants to spend his Monday making a cake.  But, things don’t go according to plan. 

November 27th: National Electric Guitar Day

Check out Gizmos, Gadgets, and Guitars: The Story of Leo Fender by Michael Mahin which is a picture book biography about Leo Fender.  He’s the person who has inspired many musicians.

November 28th: Red Planet Day

Mars! Earthlings Welcome by Stacy McAnulty introduces us to the red planet.  This nonfiction picture book is entertaining and informative.

November 29th: National Lemon Cream Pie Day

Peyton is not a fan of trying new foods. She is determined to try something new this Thanksgiving. ⁣ ⁣ She’s chosen pie to be that food. Now, which one will she try? ⁣ ⁣ As the visitors bring the pies…⁣ Lemon Chess Pie⁣ Ruffled Milk Pie⁣ Plum Galette⁣ ⁣ Peyton just isn’t sure any of them sound normal and plain enough to try.⁣ ⁣ But, then she discovers pie à la mode and now pie isn’t sounding as scary anymore. Bring on the pie. Read Peyton Picks the Perfect Pie by Jack Bishop to find out which pie Peyton tries.⁣ ⁣ Then, enjoy the pie recipe included in the book. ⁣

November 30th: National Personal Space Day

Don’t Hug Doug (He Doesn’t Like It) by Carrie Finison is for exploring personal space and preferences. Many people do not like giving or receiving hugs and that is okay. This book opens the conversation about hugging.

October 7th: You Matter to Me Day

The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig is a story about a very quiet boy named Brian who goes mostly unnoticed in his school.  Then, a new boy joins the class and Brian is the first person to make him feel welcome.  The two join together on a project and both shine.

October 8th: World Octopus Day

An octopus is eager to get back to its home in the sea after being captured and taken to an aquarium.  Can this escape artist succeed? Find out in The Octopus Escapes by Maile Meloy.

October 9th: Fire Prevention Day 

In I’m Brave by the McMullans, we learn about some of the tools that you will find on a fire truck.

We Are Still Here!: Native American Truths Everyone Should Know by Traci Sorell definitely draws on Dr. Reese’s point of choosing books in the present tense which also shines a light on history and concerns of today.

October 13th: Ada Lovelace Day

Ada’s Ideas: The Story of Ada Lovelace, the World’s First Computer Programmer by Fiona Robinson about a remarkable women from the 1800s.  Yes, the 1800s.

October 14th: National Fossil Day

Dinosaur Bones by Bob Barner can easily be adjusted depending on the attention span of your audience.  Read the top section for a simple story about dinosaurs or delve into the supporting text for more information about their bones from their jaws to their tales.

October 15th: National Mushroom Day

How does a fungus feed?
Can a fungus weigh as much as a whale?
What season will you find the most mushrooms?

All of these questions and more can be found in Humongous Fungus by Lynne Bodd.

October 16th: Dictionary Day

I’m super picky when it comes to dictionaries for kids. They have to describe the word in kid-friendly terms in order for me to recommend them. Well…The Dictionary of Difficult Words by Jane Solomon is one I can recommend! It has over 400 words that will challenge those who love to learn new and unusual words. My kids and I have been picking one a day to talk about and try to incorporate into our vocabulary.

October 17th: Black Poetry Day

Just Like Me by Vanessa Brantley-Newton is a beautiful collection of poetry about finding your unique self.

October 18th: Alaska Day

Many people go to the beach for rest and fun. But, some people go to the beach to work. Meet a family crew that travels to Alaska’s beaches each summer to catch salmon in Sunrise Summer by Swanson and Behr.

October 19th: National New Friends Day

Making friends when a language barrier exists can be a bit challenging.⁣ In The Word for Friend by Aidan Cassie we meet Kemala the pangolin (I don’t think I’ve read another picture book with a pangolin as a character.) who is excited to meet new friends at her new school. ⁣But, she soon discovers that she doesn’t understand her classmates and they don’t understand her. But, she does meet someone and it turns out that friendship can be a universal language.⁣

October 20th: International Chefs Day

Alice Waters Cooks Up a Food Revolution by Diane Stanley is a feast. Alice Waters is known for using fresh ingredients to create amazing flavorful foods in her restaurant. She started a food revolution that can be seen in communities across the world now. ⁣

I loved that she created a set menu concept and that the menu would change every day based on what was available, in season, and tasted the best. Fresh and local all the way! ⁣

October 21st: Count Your Buttons Day

Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin is the tale of Pete the Cat who is wearing his favorite shirt with the four groovy buttons.  When Pete loses a button, he doesn’t cry.  Goodness no, he just keeps singing his song.  This is such a fun book to sing and countdown with Pete as he loses all of his groovy buttons.

October 25th: National Fine Art Appreciation Day

There are a lot of hands who help bring an art exhibition to life from the artist to the curator.⁣ Learn about all the jobs someone interested in art could hold in this interesting and informative book.⁣

Children will learn about art handlers who pack up the art to ready it for shipping, a curator who makes miniature versions of the art to decide where each piece should go in the exhibit, and more people in the art world. Check out Making a Great Exhibition by Dora Globus and Rose Blake.

October 28th: National Immigrants Day

My Two Border Towns by David Bowles is the story of a father and son who travel to the other side. It’s a city super close to their city in the USA. It’s just across the Rio Grande on US-Mexico border. They are free to travel between the two countries because they have a passport. They visit family, share food, play, and make purchases.⁣
⁣
On their way back, we learn about a stop they make on the bridge. It’s a spot filled with refugees stuck between the two countries. The boy and his father share basic necessities with one of the families and the boy dreams of a time when the people will no longer be stuck and instead free to come into the USA.⁣ Such a moving story to discuss immigration, refugees, families, hardships, and love with students.

October 29th: RSPB Feed the Birds Day

Clever Crow by Chris Butterworth is super accessible for young listeners or new readers learning to navigate informational books.  The crow doesn’t seem like the most interesting bird but did you know it is probably the most clever?   Scientists think they may be as intelligent as monkeys and apes.  Loved how approachable this book was for the younger crowd.

October 30th: Buy a Donut Day

Do you remember the classic book by Pat Hutchins, The Doorbell Rang? Each time the doorbell rings, the kids have to redivide the cookies so everyone can get some.⁣ Well,Dozens of Doughnuts by Carrie Finison has a similar vibe making it a fun partner read to The Doorbell Rang.⁣

In Dozens of Doughnuts, Bear is looking forward to a tasty treat before settling down for a long nap, but the doorbell keeps ringing. And with each opening of the door is another hungry animal to feed. ⁣Will Bear get any doughnuts?⁣

October 31st: Halloween

Have you ever thought the grass is greener on the other side? Our main character thinks that might be the case. Big Boo thinks trading Little Boo for another sibling might be best. But, is it really? The illustrations are so fun in Little Boo by Maddie Frost.

Did you know that September is National Literacy Month?  Banned Books Week is also the last week in September.  And, September is also National Library Card Sign-Up Month.

September 1st: National Tofu Day

Tofu Takes Time by Helen H. Wu is the story of a young girl who makes homemade tofu with her grandmother. Tofu making is a test of patience as the process takes time. But, the taste is worth the wait.

September 2nd: World Coconut Day

The coconut tree takes center stage as the letters climb up it in Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.  And, enjoy lots of different activities to go with the book too.—> Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Activities

September 3rd: National Skyscraper Day

The text is sparse but the vocabulary is rich in Skyscraper by Jorey Hurley.  If you live close to a city, head out to stand under a skyscraper after reading.

September 4th: National Wildlife Day

Do you know what the names of different animals are called? Learn about the name of groups of animals and how they work together in a great book called Packs: Strength in Numbers by Hannah Salyer.

September 5th: International Day of Charity

One Hen by Katie Smith Milway is the story of how one idea to raise money for food grew into a huge food resource. Change happens one idea at a time by one person at a time. I loved the resourcefulness and determination showcased throughout the story.

September 6th: National Read a Book Day

Albert’s Quiet Quest by Isabelle Arsenault is a beautiful book about getting lost in a book. We all know how it can be tough to find just a little quiet to read and dream and Albert has the same problem.

September 7th: Superhuman Day

Super Duck is the tale of a duck who steps in to rescue a frog from a kite flying adventure.  The rhyming text and bold illustrations had my kids giggling all along.

September 8th: World Literacy Day

Just Read! by Lori Degman celebrates reading anywhere and everywhere and with anyone or anything.

September 9th: Teddy Bear Day

A little boy needs his bear. Can you spot the bear? Try it out in Where is Bear? by Jonathan Bentley. And, get ready for a surprise ending.

September 10th: Swap Ideas Day

What Do You Do With An Idea? by Kobi Yamada is a wonderful and inspirational book about nurturing new ideas and watching them grow. It is a great reminder not to discount an idea that seems too big, too hard, or too odd. Give it time and space then watch it grow!

September 11th: 9/11 Awareness Day

This Very Tree by Sean Rubin is a beautiful book that focuses on the surviving tree at the scene and the care of the tree after it was removed from the 9/11 site.  It’s told in the voice of the tree and all that it witnessed.

September 12th: Video Games Day

The Boy Who Thought Outside the Box: The Story of Video Game Inventor Ralph Baer by Marcie Wessels is the story of how video games came into existence. In this book, we get to meet Ralph Baer who brought us the first gaming system.

September 13th: Grandparent’s Day

This next book features a grandchild and grandpa, but could easily work with a grandma too.  Goldie’s Guide to Grandchilding by Clint McElroy provides you with everything you need to know about grandchilding (taking care of a grandparent) from how to feed them to how to get them to sleep.  Super silly and laugh-out-loud funny read-aloud time is on the horizon with this one.

September 14th: National Coloring Day

When you think colors, you think crayons. Learn all about the inventor of the Crayola crayon in The Crayon Man by Natascha Biebow.

September 15th: International Dot Day

The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds is the story of a caring teacher who encourages a resistant Vashti to “make her mark.” The young girl’s breakthrough begins with a simple dot on a piece of paper. Her teacher encourages her to set off on a journey of creating, discovering, and inspiring others.

Celebrate the day with these International Dot Day book activities.

September 16th: Collect Rocks Day

We are talking big rocks in this next pick. How to Make a Mountain: in Just 9 Simple Steps and Only 100 Million Years! by Amy Huntington walks us through the steps of mountain making. But, you have to be very patient because it takes a really long time.

September 17th: National Pet Bird Day

Love Is by Diane Adams is a precious little story of the love between a girl and her duckling. We walk through all the highlights of love and the tough times that require love to pull us through.

September 18th: National Respect Day

All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold is an AMAZING book that every classroom and home should own. It doesn’t matter what your background is, what color your skin is, or what your religion may be. All Are Welcome inside the school community.

September 19th: Talk Like a Pirate Day

Give Me Back My Bones by Kim Norman is packed with fun learning and a fun read for Talk Like a Pirate Day.

“Now I need my gnaw bone, my chicken-chomping saw bone.
I’ll starve without my jawbone. I miss my mandible!”

September 20th: National Care for Kids Day

It’s not the size or shape of a family that makes it a family.  It’s love that makes a family. Love is a Family by Roma Downey is a story of a young girl discovering that what truly makes a family is love and that can come in all shapes and sizes.

September 21st: World Gratitude Day

Finding Grateful by Dianne White highlights the simple act of noticing things and paying attention leads to gratitude.

September 22nd: National Ice Cream Cone Day

There can be a lot of waiting for that dreamed-about ice cream cone. There’s the waiting in line to get your ice cream. Trying to time it right so it doesn’t drip down your arm. And friends coming to the rescue just in time.  Enjoy Ice Cream Face by Heidi Woodward Sheffield.

September 23rd: National Baker Day

A village has many businesses and jobs that provide for the villagers from fishermen to the baker.  This book highlights a variety of jobs but focuses on the impact of the baker and the interworkings of a village by the sea.  Read The Baker by the Sea by Paula White.

September 24th: National Punctuation Day

Imagine if punctuation marks took a vacation.  Would chaos ensue?  Read the postcards for each punctuation mark that they send back to the class in Punctuation Takes a Vacation by Robin Pulver.

September 25th: Math Storytelling Day

Pigeon Math is Asia Citro’s first picture book.  The narrator is trying to tell a story but the pigeons keep flying back and forth from the line disrupting the story of the narrator.  It’s comical.  It’s educational.  And, it’s a super creative math-related book perfect for enjoying as a read-aloud and extending into further learning.

September 26th: National Dumpling Day

What’s in a Dumpling, Grandma? by Linda Meeker is a multi-generational tale about sharing food and memories. Together they make dumplings and learn about their family heritage.

September 27th: National Crush a Can Day

I learned quite a bit about how aluminum cans are made in The Adventures of an Aluminum Can by Little Green Books. Told in a diary format, we follow from a piece of alumina underground to the transformation into a can followed by the journey the can takes becoming all sorts of things. Kids will learn lots of vocabulary words including bale, bauxite, and refinery.

September 28th: Read a Child a Book You Love Day

Share a book you love with a child today.  It’s your choice!

September 29th: Inventors Day

Magic Ramen: The Story of Momofuku Ando by Andrea Wang and his invention of quick cooking ramen.  It took a lot of trial and error, but determination won out and a staple was born.

September 30th: #BeWhoYouAreDay

Todd Parr celebrates each of us being uniquely ourselves so to celebrate his books and message, September 30th is #BeWhoYouAreDay.  There are even some fun ways to participate which can check out to celebrate the day.—>Todd Parry Be Who You are Day Resources

Books About 9/11 for Children

30,000 Stitches: The Inspiring Story of the National Flag by Amanda Davis is the story of the flag that was placed on the wreckage of the towers by workers.  It became worn and tattered thus resulting in its removal and getting stored away. Years later it traveled to another rebuilding after tragedy and a new idea was stirred.  The flag continued to be repaired my hands from around the USA traveling to each state.  This is the story of it’s journey and to it’s final place of honor.  Lots of backmatter included about the people behind the flag journey, its return to New York, the restoration process, and an author’s note.  Recommended for ages 4 and up.

Survivor Tree by Marcie Colleen is the story of a tree that managed to survive at the scene. ⁣It was taken away to recover and then replanted at the 9/11 Memorial. This is the story of that tree.⁣ I found the images of the book to be filled with comfort and hope.⁣ Recommended for ages 5 and up.⁣

Pair Survivor Tree by Marcie Colleen with the other new book about the tree- ⁣⁣This Very Tree by Sean Rubin. This equally beautiful book focuses on the care of the tree after it was removed from the 9/11 site.  It’s told in the voice of the tree and all that it witnessed.  Recommended for ages 4 and up.

In keeping with the story of the tree we have Branches of Hope The 9/11 Survivor Tree by Ann Magee.  This book focuses on the people impacted by the devastation.  It talks about people healing, building, and remembering.  The book is anchored with the tree surviving at the beginning and thriving at the end. Recommended for ages 5 and up.

Helping young children cope with big tragic events is to focus on the helpers and heroes.  Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey by Maira Kalman introduces us to a fire boat that burst onto the scene in 1931.  Little did we know that many years later, it would play a role in helping to fight the fires of the 9/11 tragedy. Recommened for ages 6 and up.

Seven and a Half Tons of Steel: A Post-9/11 Story of Hope and Transformation by Janet Nolan is the story of some of the wreckage taken from the collapse of the towers and how it was used to create the ship, the USS New York. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

September Roses by Jeanette Winter is the story of two sisters who traveled from Africa for a flower show on the day the twin towers fell.  A stranger offered them a place to stay and had an idea of where all the flowers the sisters had brought could go.  They traveled to Union Square and layed all the flowers in the shape of the two towers.  Recommended for ages 4 and up.

Tragedy can impact and reach many.  14 Cows for America by Carmen Agra Deedy and Wilson Kimeli Naiyomah is the story of a doctor in training who was in New York during 9/11 as he returns to his village in Kenya.  There he shares about the tragedy with his Maasai community and they in turn offer 14 precious cows to the United States as a blessing. Recommended for ages 6 and up.⁣

The Astronomer Who Questioned Everything: The Story of Maria Mitchell  by Laura Alary is the story of a woman who pursued her childhood curiosity that led her to an amazing discovery- a comet. Step back into the 1800s and meet this woman.

August 2nd: National Coloring Book Day

The crayon box is not happy.  Some crayons are upset that they never get used.  Some are upset they get used too much.  Some are even jealous of each other.  What are the crayons to do?  Find out in The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt.

August 3rd: National Watermelon Day

An award winner is The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli. We are introduced to a crocodile who has a fear of swallowing watermelon seeds.

August 4th: US Coast Guard Birthday

The Coast Guard does amazing work but sometimes they can use a helping hand. All Hands on Deck! by Robert Neubecker is the story of the Cajun Navy, a group of small boats that band together to help rescue people stranded by hurricanes in Louisiana.  They are a big help to the Coast Guard.

August 5th: National Underwear Day

Creepy Pair of Underwear by Aaron Reynolds is creative, funny, and engaging. This was such a fun one to talk about the power of the illustrations. A little rabbit gets a creepy pair of underwear and when he discovers that it glows in the dark, he doesn’t want them anymore.

August 6th:  Balloons to Heaven Day

My Yellow Balloon by Tiffany Papageorge is a beautifully illustrated book about a boy who gets a yellow balloon at a carnival.  One day the balloon slips off his wrist and drifts away.  Joey feels angry, confused, and sad as he tries to process his loss.  As time passes he transitions from feeling sad most of the time to just some of the time.

August 7th: National Lighthouse Day

Hello Lighthouse by Sophie Blackall was a 2019 Caldecott winner.  The illustrations are absolutely stunning.  Blackall is one of my favorite illustrators.

August 8th: International Cat Day

Marigold is a cat with a personality. Marigold Bakes a Cake by Mike Malbrough is a funny tale of a cat who just wants to spend his Monday making a cake.  But, things don’t go according to plan.

Help Wanted Must Love Books by Janet Summer Johnson is the tale of a girl looking for a replacement bedtime reader. Is there anyone who can fill her dad’s shoes?

August 10th: World Lion Day

Lost in the Library by Josh Funk is the story of the two stone lions outside of the NYPL. The two give us a tour of all the sights and sounds of the library at night.

August 11th: National Hip-Hop Day

Hip Hop Lollipop by Susan Montanari is the story of a little girl who hip-hops her way to bed.  This one works really well for building vocabulary and sequencing too.

August 12th: World Elephant Day

The Elephant’s New Shoe by Laurel Neme is based on a true rescue story of a baby elephant with a badly injured foot. The foot is unable to be saved, but some very caring individuals work to build the elephant a special prosthetic boot.

August 13th: Women’s and Family Day

Hair Oil Magic by Anu Chouhan celebrates a simple ritual that some South Asian families share to bond over important hair care. A beautiful story about the love of being with family.

Have you ever entered a bookstore to discover a resident cat? The Bookstore Cat by Cylin Busby introduces us to the 26 sides of a bookstore cat from the adorable to the zig-zagging cat.

It’s very evident that Gall has a passion for planes.⁣ Learn about thrust, drag, a Waddell’s Wagon, and more in this fascinating book.⁣

August 18th: Never Give Up Day

Mindset is huge when it comes to achieving goals.  The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi reminds us to add the powerful word “yet” to those “I can’t” statements we tell ourselves.

August 19th: National Potato Day

Mr. Crum’s Potato Predicament by Anne Renaud has a fun opening, “George Crum loved to cook. He fricasseed and flambeed, boiled and braised, poached and pureed.” So much vocabulary is packed into two lines.⁣
⁣
So legend has it that George Crum invented the potato chip in 1853 while working at a restaurant. A picky customer returned their potatoes complaining they were undercooked and too thick. So George decided to go to the opposite extreme for the customer. The book is a playful variation on that legend that is packed with entertainment. And, the illustrations are beautiful.⁣

August 20th: National Bacon Lover’s Day

Yes, do not forget the bacon! Enjoy Don’t Forget the Bacon by Pat Hutchins.

August 21st: Poet’s Day

Red Sings from Treetops: A Year in Colors by Joyce Sidman vividly brings colors to life as they depict different characteristics of the seasons.

August 22nd: National Tooth Fairy Day

Tooth Fairy: Flight of the Tooth Fairy by Jaren Ahlmann gives us a glimpse of the tooth fairy who magically appears to collect our teeth that have fallen out and who lives a gift behind.

August 23rd: Hug Your Sweetheart Day

I Need a Hug by Aaron Blabey is the story of a porcupine in need of a hug.  But, no one wants to hug a porcupine.  Will porcupine find the hug?

August 24th: Pluto Demoted Day

How do you think Pluto felt getting that call that it wasn’t a planet anymore?⁣ Well, Adam Rex, has some ideas in this fun and informative read-aloud, Pluto Gets the Call.⁣ The kids will be giggling and soaking up lots of solar system information as they enjoy the text and playful illustrations.⁣

August 25th: National Second-Hand Wardrobe Day

Rosie and the Pre-Loved Dress by Leanne Hatch is the story of a young girl who visits a thrift shop and finds a beautiful yellow dress that has the name Mila written on the tag.  She envisions Mila wearing this dress and doing all sorts of things.  Rosie loves the dress but eventually outgrows it.  So, she takes a marker and writes her name on the tag before donating it back to the thrift shop.

August 26th: Musical Yoga Day

Enjoy I Am Yoga by Susan Verde and then do some yoga with Emily Arrow’s song to compliment the book.

August 27th: World Rock Scissors Paper Day

The End of Something Wonderful by Stephanie V.W. Lucianovic is a how-to guide for putting on a backyard funeral no matter if the child has lost a pet fish or guinea pig. The story is told with practicality as well as a sensitivity and bit of a humorous touch. 

August 29th: National Sports Day

The kids have to clear the field for a game of soccer (futbol) to play and nothing can stop them including a downpour until their momma’s call. The fun game is in The Field by Baptiste Paul.

August 30th: National Beach Day

Summer usually means exploring the beach for many.⁣ Look What I Found at the Beach by Moira Butterfield, is full of things to explore and learn about the beach.⁣ It is a little bit seek and find and a lot of facts about all the things you’ll discover at the beach. Learn about different crabs, explore shell shapes, and discover mermaid’s purses in this informative book.⁣

August 31st: Eat Outside Day

When I think of eating outside, I think of visiting food trucks.  Boy or boy are there some good ones. Try Little Taco Truck by Tanya Valentine.  In this tale, the Taco Truck is having a hard time finding a parking spot as more and more food trucks crowd the area.  It has to stand up for itself in the sea of food trucks.

July 2nd: National Disco Day

Bear Moves by Ben Bailey Smith will get kids moving and grooving during read-aloud time.  Children will love to imitate Bear’s moves on the classroom dance floor. It would be fun to make a tinfoil disco ball for your reading area when you enjoy this book.

July 3rd: National Eat Beans Day

The Cool Bean by Jory John is the story of a bean trying to fit in and along the way finds out that the “cool beans” are the ones who are kind.

America the Beautiful by Wendell Minor is a beautiful road trip through the United States to see many sights.

July 5th: National Graham Cracker Day

Rangers often remind campers to not feed the animals.  Well, in Don’t Feed the Bear by Kathleen Doherty the bear and the ranger battle with signage to inform campers what they should really do.  This funny romp will encourage kids to make their own signs.  Plus, they will want to make s’mores too.

July 6th: National Air Traffic Control Day

Learn about all the people who help airplanes fly including air traffic control workers in Fly by Nathan Clement.

July 7th: Tell the Truth Day

A Bike Like Sergio’s by Maribeth Boelts is a story about a boy who finds a bill on the floor of the store. He initially thinks it is $1, but it turns out to be a $100 bill.  Should it matter if it’s a $1 or $100?  What is the right thing to do? This is a realistic look at all the thoughts that one goes through when making a decision and the importance of being honest.

July 8th: National Video Game Day

Jack Gets Zapped by Mac Barnett is the 8th book in the Jack series for beginning readers, but also a fun read-aloud.  In this story, Zach gets zapped right through the tv and into a video game.

July 9th: National Sugar Cookie Day

A kind man bakes cookies for his neighbors to celebrate all the little and big moments.  His anonymous acts of kindness come to a standstill when he becomes ill though.  Soon though, his neighbors come to help him. Read The Cookie Maker of Mavin Road by Sue Lawson.

July 10th: Pick Blueberries Day 

Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey takes us to the mountainside while a bear family and a person family look for blueberries.  But, the little ones of the families get a little mixed up.

July 11th: National Swimming Pool Day

There’s nothing quite like a day at the public pool.  So much fun to be had and so many people to see.  Check out Pool Party by Elisa Parhad.

July 12th: Malala Day

Meet a very courageous woman in Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai. Malala believes that all girls have a right to an education and she continues to be brave and speak her mind.

July 13th: National Rock Day

What Can You Do With a Rock? by Pat Zietlow Miller is about creativity and possibility.  If you have a rock, what can you do?  Well, you can skip it or build with it or even tell a story about it.

July 14th:  Shark Awareness Day

The Shark Book by the amazing pairing of Steve Jenkins & Robin Page will enthrall shark enthusiasts with details, diagrams, maps, and more.

July 15th: National I Love Horses Day

Horses: Trotting! Prancing! Racing by Patricia Hubbell is about all the things that horses do. The book also identifies many different kinds of horses.

July 16th: World Snake Day 

One Day in the Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus Tree by Daniel Bernstrom is full of rhythm making it a great read-aloud. A hungry snake develops an ever-growing body until he gets quite the tummy ache.

July 17th: National Tattoo Day

Can school teachers have tattoos? Back when I started teaching in the 90’s that was a no in the districts I taught. If you had a tattoo, it couldn’t be exposed.

Times have changed but there are still some stereotypes surrounding tattoos. This book opens the conversation around just that.

In this story, classmates learn that tattoos are a form of self-expression and often celebrate culture, a journey, or a connection to something important in the person’s life.

July 18th: World Listening Day

Listen by Gabi Snyder challenges us to not just listen to all that is going on around us, but listen to what is going on inside of each of us too.⁣

July 19th: National Urban Beekeeping Day

The Honeybee Man by Lela Nargi is the story of a New York beekeeper who tends to his hives on the top of a building. We learn how the bees live and work to create that sticky treat.

July 20th: World Jump Day

Hop, Hop, Jump! by Lauren Thompson is a fun book for little movers and shakers. The text is short and rhythmic. Not only do the kids learn to move in different ways (wiggling, stomping, clomping, etc.) the book also reinforces learning about the different parts of the body.

July 21st: National Take a Monkey to Lunch Day

“Apple Juice, Orange Juice, Gooseberry Pies –Monkey needs some exercise!” Sing, dance, move, and shake in Spunky Little Monkey by Bill Martin Jr.

July 22nd: Summer Leisure Day

And Then Comes Summer by Tom Brenner is written in a back and forth when and then manner. For example “When the days stretch out like a slow yawn…Then throw on flip-flops and breathe the sweet air.” All the sounds, tastes, and smells are explored in this picture book.

July 23rd: National Gorgeous Grandma Day

There is something pretty amazing about intergenerational connectedness. In Something About Grandma by Tania de Regil, we meet a girl staying with her grandmother without her parents in Mexico City. Together they have a beautiful time and eventually reunite with a new member to the family.

July 24th: National Cousins Day

Every year the cousins come to town for fun and family.  And, everyone has a nickname in the family too.  This year, our main character is determined to earn her own nickname in the family.  Find out what it will be in When My Cousins Come to Town by Angela Shanté.

July 25th: Carousel Day

The Midnight Fair by Gideon Sterer takes us to the fairgrounds at night.  As humans sleep, imagine all the animals coming to enjoy the sights and sounds of the midway. Take a ride with the animals on the carousel, watch them enjoy the cotton candy & popcorn, and win a goldfish.  There is so much to enjoy in this wordless wonder.

July 26th: National Aunt and Uncle Day

Books for Kids About Swimming

Together We Swim by Valerie Bolling uses sparse text and amazing illustrations to tell the story of a child learning to swim with their family at the pool. There is so much to study in the illustrations making it work for young children and older ones too.

We’ve all been there…an embarrassing poop-in-your-pants moment.  Well, this one takes place in the pool. The Boy Who Cried Poop! by Alessandra Requena revisits a childhood memory of her own family in this laugh-out-loud funny tale.  In the story, a young boy feels that he needs to poop so the family trudges up the stairs from the pool to take him potty.  But, then he doesn’t need to go.  So, back downstairs they go to the pool.  This scene plays out multiple times until he can’t make it to the potty in time.

A Mermaid Girl by Sana Rafi is the story of a young girl and her mother headed to the community pool in their burkinis. They are both excited to be mermaids in the water, but her friends start asking questions about her burkini and she feels like she stands out too much. But Mama helps her find her inner mermaid connectedness with others and feel good about herself and her choices.

Nothing says summer like a pool party full of fun and friends. Dive right into Pool Party by Amy Duchêne and Elisa Parhad for festive pool party fun and lots of rich descriptive vocabulary describing your time at the pool.

Our Pool by Lucy Ruth Cummins showcases the whole city coming together for a pool day.  If you have ever been to a city public pool, this one is for you.  I love that this book captures the energy and diversity of a day at the public pool.

When You Can Swim by Jack Wong has a poetic feel to all the possibilities when you know how to swim from listening to “clinking waves” to floating on your back “watching treetops drift by.”

Nervous Nigel by Bethany Christou is the story of learning to face your fears and having the courage to express them to others.⁣ Nigel loves to swim and he comes from a long line of champions. But, Nigel doesn’t love swimming competitions. It brings him very little joy and a lot of anxiety. And, Nigel doesn’t want to disappoint his family.⁣ Will Nigel find the courage to be true to himself and tell his family how he feels and the decision he has made?⁣

Lottie & Walter by Anna Walker is the story of a little girl who fears there are sharks in the swimming pool.  But, she summons her courage to face the fear.

In the first lesson, she totally stays on the sidelines. ⁣ But, class by class, she summons the courage to take that next little step and eventually, she’s floating, splashing, and enjoying herself in the water.⁣

The Mermaid with No Tail by Jessica Long is the story of a mermaid with no tail. Even though she is made fun of for not having a tail, she decides to compete in the Mermaid Games. With the support of her adoptive parents, friends, and coach she trains and wins.

A science teacher takes a group of children playing in a Maui ditch all the way to the Olympics.⁣Turns out a little science, creativity, and determination can produce some amazing results.⁣ Check out Sakamoto’s Swim Club by Julie Abrey which is based on a true story.⁣

I love when books can inspire and inform at the same time. In this story, we meet Yusra Mardini, a Syrian refugee and Olympic athlete. Learn about her journey in Swimming Toward a Dream by Reem Faruqi.

I like that The Pool is Cool by Dwayne Reed is about learning to swim because there aren’t many out there. I also like that this story shows a child encouraging and adult to learn new things too.
