This morning Feb. 5th 2012 I had my alarm clock set for the earliest it's been, probably since I had to commute to the office or catch a flight. Even for black Friday it was only set for 9ish. It's much easier to wake up and think about shopping instead of going to work, naturally I jumped out of bed and hit the road. Some people might think it's crazy to wake up so early on a Sunday or even get all worked up about it. Yep, it's kinda crazy but it's lots of fun.

Jason Wu makes flirty fun feminine fashions with girlhood charm. While waiting online at Target with other 8 women waiting to be the first through the doors we chatted about Missoni, Jason Wu, Superbowl Sunday and Michelle Obama. If I still lived in NY I wouldn't brave the crowds of re-sellers waiting to pull racks down and scalp dresses on eBay. The lovely thing about southern hospitality is that these other woman were ever so kind. It makes shopping more meaningful and wearing the clothes more memorable. Being such a nostalgic person is one of the reasons I love Jason Wu's clothing. It's also the reason I take part in the shared experience with other women who crave the adrenaline rush of it all. We told each-other what we were looking for and stuck together to make sure we each got what we had came for.

As we made our way down to the fitting rooms we felt hesitant to leave our carts full of clothing, bags and scarves by the wayside and did most of our trying on over our clothes or tights in the open. We were able to give each-other feedback on what looks good and how things fit etc. Some things we noticed were items like the trench coat fit too big and the skirts ran small. I noticed some items had small pulls in the fabric and one woman's pearls were falling off the neckline of her powder blue dress. Keeping in mind it's not the 2k dress you would find at Neiman Marcus. This has to be somewhat expected.

Here is what I ended up with.

The blue dress with striped trim and the wagon wheel black and white collared button down dress. I picked the straw bag in white being that I usually don't like switching out bags often and it will match more than the floral print bag.

I got the black pleated skirt shown above. It isn't extremely flattering for my hips but I have a feeling it will get a lot of wear.

I got the black cat tee shirt and the black cat print scarf (to tie around my new bag). Any cat lover couldn't resist the cuteness of these.

What I actually ended up with was very different from what I had originally intended to purchase. I thought I would love this dress:

Turns out the shape was more flattering on a stick thin woman and where the thick black lines hit my body didn't work. Like many of the other peach and pink hued pieces the color didn't do anything for me. I also wanted the light blue cardigan but thought the knit would be heavier, it was so light and the length was so long it looked stretched out and odd.

January Birchbox Review

This is my second Birchbox and it was much better than the one I received in December. This time there were three things I got that I genuinely liked. As will be the case with most Birchboxes I tried on the perfume right away and put my sweater in the wash right away, again. Guess I've never been big on strong scents, headaches are typically imminent.

What I loved: The Zoya nail polish in "Megan"

ZOYA: This stuff is tough, it has been on my nails without a chip for a week! I added the sparkles.

VMV Hypoallergenics: I love the eye cream even if it smells like day old oatmeal it actually makes me feel more awake and I don't have wrinkles yet but hope this is preventing them anyway.

Befine: Night-cream, this stuff is the only stuff I can safely put on my face and go to sleep without waking up with irritation.

Larabar: So sour and gross. Flavor: Cherry Pie.

Juicy Couture Perfume Sample: Like EWWWW OMG this is what annoying girls smell like.

I made the decision to sign up for Birchbox because I love getting things in the mail. Birchbox is a mail order service that sends you luxury samples of perfume, make-up, skin care products or whatever else they decide to throw in there. At $10 a month I figured it's worth a try and you can opt out of it at anytime.

My December Birchbox arrived today and it was a total let down. I spent ten bucks on a few free samples?! I feel like a sucker. But I did my research and saw a bunch of YouTubes of girls getting nail polish or bracelets and other great stuff. Typically they would say that some months really sucked and other months were great. I'm gonna give them 2 more months to get better at this otherwise call it quits.

Birchbox was developed by two Harvard business school grads. Yep it's pretty brilliant to get people to pay for FREE samples... When you look at the website there is NARS, KORRES, Stilla and Redkin products. I don't know why I didn't get an awesome box that looked like one of those?

OK the packaging is cute, and I did get some Benefit POREfessional in there (some pretty good stuff which goes for around 10 dollars for a mini tube on Amazon) so I was at least relieved to find that in there.

I also got a sample of "AGELESS" perfume by Harvey Prince. Now this stuff is supposed to make you "smell younger" but I'm sorry the only thing that smells young to me is baby powder and this stuff has given me a terrible headache all day and smells like an old lady. Barf. I really just took some Advil and put my shirt in the wash to get rid of the pain this stuff has caused me today.

There is some hair oil in the box that I'll give a try but honestly I hate putting oil in my hair because then it gets on my face.

There was also some double-sided tape, the worlds smallest hot pink lip-gloss and a weird hangover cure/boost energy drink powder... so we will see how that works out.

Family Visit // Trip to Eureka // Full Belly's

My parents drove all the way from NY to visit me in Arkansas and spent the past few days with us. We all had a wonderful time together. They think Fayetteville is beautiful just like I do and after I've been here for over a year they finally see what I have been "tawkin" about. We have been eating really well.

Friday:
Mom and Dad arrived Friday afternoon and we went to Whole Hog Cafe for dinner. They laughed at the thought of me eating at a place with a boar's head on the wall because prior to living in Arkansas I had been vegetarian. They all placed bets on how long that would last after I moved down south. Well I lasted under a year and have really been making up for lost time. We all had pulled pork at Whole Hog and agreed that the potato salad was the best on Earth. I took them up to Mount Sequoya to admire the view. We didn't want to do much driving since they had just spent 3 days in the car so we watched the George Harrison documentary Living in the Material World.

Saturday:
Saturday I showed my parents what our big farmers market is all about and then took them around to my favorite shops on the square. I kind of rushed them more than I'd have liked but we had to get home to watch the Razorback football game. I bought them each a Razorback shirt at Houndstooth so they are now official Razorback fans. After our victory against Ole Miss (my cousins alma mater) we walked down to Dickson St. and checked out the Dickson St. Book store. I lost my parents in the maze of books and by the time we found my dad in a little nook sitting and reading about Teddy Roosevelt we were starving. We walked across the street and ate dinner at Doe's Eat Place. We all agreed their mushrooms were the best on Earth too. We of course had to go to Orange Leaf for dessert. Then we digested on the couch and watched game 3 of the World Series.

Sunday:
Sunday we ate huge steaks at Justin's aunts house the mushrooms there were great too. It was so nice for our families to finally meet. Everyone got along great and Justin's Aunt Donna was such a good hostess. Justin and I made homemade vanilla chocolate chip ice-cream to bring for dessert and my parents bought two pies from the Village Inn, an apple and a pecan. Ugh! Just reading this makes you feel full right? So we rested on the couch and watched game 4 of the World Series.

Monday:
So Monday we did ALOT. First we went to Eureka Springs. We woke up early so we could pick up breakfast at Rick's Bakery. My mom and I each ate a ham and cheese crossiant and the men ate Kolaches. I did not know what this was prior to living in Arkansas and my mom and dad had never heard of them either. We are used to typical NY breakfasts like bagels or egg, bacon and cheese on a roll. (I really miss Stuff-a-Bagel) Oh yea we also got "cawfee" and blueberry muffins! We ate and drove out to Eureka Springs, the weather was gorgeous and we had a really fun time. My family and I are big on nostalgia so we had fun looking at all the little antique stores and chotchkies from back in the day. I had been telling Justin we should eat at Local Flavor and he asked my dad what he would be interested in eating for lunch. My dad says "I want to taste the local flavor" (not knowing this was actually a restaurant that we were planning on going to). So that was pretty weird and now we had no choice but to go there. Oh man was it good! It's the best food I've had in Eureka. We guzzled down unsweetened iced tea. I asked a waitress what kind of tea it was and she said she couldn't tell us. bummer. I ate my first Ruben in at least 5 years. It was mouthwateringly delicious. I'm so happy we decided to eat there. My parents loved the Eureka Springs charm and all the old architecture of the houses.

They said they wanted to visit the Crescent Hotel. We looked around the hotel for ghosts and sat out on the porch in the big rocking chairs. They said they want to stay there overnight next time they come to visit to "see what happens".

Justin and I figured that since we were close we might as well take them to see the Christ of the Ozarks statue. There were tons of wasps and grasshoppers buzzing around and we got some good pictures.

Then we drove to the Thorncrown Chapel and two little old ladies shouted from the chapel "get back in your car and go back from where you came! We are closed! We close at 3:30" Reminding myself to check my NY attitude I bit my tongue and we did what they told us to do, but really... who closes at 3:30 anyway? AND nice christian attitude! We then headed down to the Pea Ridge National Military Park. This is the kind of thing that turns my dad back into a little kid. He was in all his glory surrounded by cannons. Even though the museum was closing in 45 minutes they said "come on in look around and we won't even charge you". We looked around and then took a driving tour around the battlefield, it was really interesting and so peaceful and beautiful it was hard to imagine all that took place there long ago. Being the nature lovers we are we got super excited when we saw two stick bugs and a deer. We took lots of pictures and peeked around at Elkhorn Tavern. We also saw a beautiful view at the eastern overlook. The sun started going down and the leaves on the trees were turning and it was just amazing.

We were tired with big full belly's and ready to sit on the couch for a few hours and watch the World Series (game 5). We ate a late dinner of french bread pizza's with Rao's sauce. My dad made a mozzarella and tomato salad with tomatoes from the farmers market and fresh basil from my "garden" (window box with parsley and basil). Dad and I had some wine.
Long day.

Tuesday:
I had to work. My parents are big on scuba diving so they ventured out to Beaver Lake and stopped at Sports Co. (the dive shop) filled their tanks with air and went for a dive in Beaver Lake. Justin returned from the library to help me make dinner. I owe my parents about a million homemade dinners so I decided that this one should be special and delicious. I made manicotti. God was it good. I really recommend the America's Test Kitchen recipe, especially if you want to treat your guests well. Here's the recipe if your interested. Justin made a really good garlic bread by roasting two heads of garlic in the oven and then mixing it with butter and salt and pepper, spreading it on the bread and then cooking it for a bit. Then we had dessert at Shakes and got custard. There wasn't any baseball to watch so we watched X-Factor. (evil laugh)

Wednesday:
I had to work but we went out for lunch at Slim Chickens, then later we went to get some shopping done. We did the usual Target and Sams Club trips and then took my dad to Academy so he could buy ammo (for target shooting). Then and we stopped at A.G. Russell Knives and looked at sharpening stones. We ate a yummy late dinner at Hugo's. The World Series isn't going to be on tonight unfortunately due to the weather we are all watching Conan. Since the Yankees are not in the World Series this year we are rooting for the Cardinals well, except for Justin who roots for the Cardinals all the time anyway.

Today they hit the road and start the journey back to New York except this time they aren't taking the scenic route, they just want to get home and get ready to go to Florida for more scuba.

It's always sad the first time I need to leave the house with a jacket after summer. Now that I'm living in the south everyone is more excited to feel the cool weather move in. This year Arkansas had a record breaking summer for heat, I don't blame them. I'm also ready to embrace fall, no more walking out the door without a coat in protest. I've got to move on with my quarterly changing of the closets.

As I took down my summer clothing I paused, and sank into my bed. It was a great summer for floral patterns and gauzy fabrics and the absence of it was hard to embrace. Being the nostalgic girl I am I' decided to memorialize them here:

Now to fill the dark void with some chunky texture, cable knit and soft stripes and fair isle.

Missoni for Target Madness

So after tracking the launch of the highly anticipated "Missoni for Target" line. I had my calendar alarm set for September 13th. I figured since I live in Arkansas I can just mosey on down there on my lunch break and pick a few items out of the 400+ that I have been eying. Previous Target designer mash up launches with Anna Sui, Alexander McQueen, Zac Posen and so on have flown off shelves in NY in seconds. Now that I live in Arkansas I made the wrong assumption that no one really knew about this and that it would all magically be on the shelves when I walked in. Once I saw that the entire Target website had been down I decided to get moving. I got down to Target around noon and everything was gone, give or take a few ugly stationary sets and some kids clothes. In the back of the store was a large cardboard box that had been ransacked, a few super large sized rain boots and some extra tiny slip-on flats were laying around. I was hoping to get my hands on this blanket:

I asked one of the workers if they had any in the back and he said these sold out in the first 10 minutes. He told me (and a few other females hounding him to check the back) that about 40 people were waiting outside for the doors to open and everything went fast. As I walked past the sad empty black and white zig-zag displays, my boyfriend looked at some of the big posters and commented on how ugly everything was. I guess growing up and looking at all those magazine ad's in Vogue knowing there wasn't a shot at ever affording this stuff, made the new affordability of it all more attractive than it actually was. I do love most of their fabrics but about 80% of the collection was too crazy looking for me. The already loud brand, now exaggerated was making me dizzy from with all the zig and zags and whatnot. I made my way over to my favorite area of Target, where the tights and socks are. I found a cute pair of boot socks in black and brown (I could do without the sparkle threading but they will only peek out of the top of my boots). I picked up a pair of space dyed tights and some kids gloves.

I like the Missoni for Target collection for adding touches of the signature fabric to my look, I'm not about draping myself in it from head to toe just because I can afford to now. I think some of the colors were so bright and overwhelming. Compare the Missoni you would get at say, Nordstrom at around $1000 a pop to the Target Missoni ($30-$50 a pop):

Target makes in easier to acquire, more fun and they can get away with over doing it. I know most girls don't need an excuse to go to Target and "Missoni for Target" is a great reason to load up on all the other fun things to buy at Target like shampoo, conditioner, make up and lounge-wear.

By the time I got home I saw that Target.com/Missoni was back up, I added a cute clutch into my cart but didn't feel like spending $50 for the free shipping and I wanted the bobby pins but I had to buy a headband that I would never wear in a pack with them for $24 which is way too much for some zig-zag bobby pins, even if Refinery29 did hype them up enough for me to keep thinking about them.

Overall I'm glad I got in on it. I think it's great when Target gets involved in exciting mash-ups. I got my gloves that I wanted and cute tights. I got my black and brown boot socks I've been looking for. Everything I would have gotten at target regardless if it was Missoni or not. Having it be Missoni just makes it extra special and creates a more memorable shopping experience. I'm not sure what else I would have bought if everything wasn't sold out. I did want that circle scarf too... If I had kids there were some really cute dresses and accessories I probably would have picked up. As far as the dinning set's or bedding sets, too busy for my taste and most of the dishes/mugs are not microwave safe.

I wish I could have checked out the pieces all in person, because what I did see there was better looking in person than online.

\\ Yummy Healthy Breakfast Wrap //

Last week I walked down the block to Big Momma's cafe in Fayetteville and had a delicious breakfast wrap stuffed with granola, peanut butter, blueberries, strawberries and drizzled in honey. Instantly addicted I set out to get the goods on hand to allow easy access to this yummy breakfast wrap. I added bananas and couldn't find the same granola they used (it was very light and crunchy). Though I miss the sunflower seeds, the cereal I used instead of granola is light and crunchy and has a hint of vanilla. It's VERY good.

Ingredients:

Mission Carb Balance Whole Wheat Wraps

Organic Peanut Butter (or your favorite) and Honey:

Granola or Cereal (handful crushed a little in your fist):

A handful sliced blueberries (cut in half), a handful of sliced Strawberries and a little less than half of a sliced banana:

Step 1:

Slice up your berries, cutting the blueberries in half is great so they don't roll out as you eat it.

Step 2:

Spread peanut butter on the wrap generously and drizzle over honey.

Step 3:

Place sliced fruit all over the wrap evenly.

Step 4:

Grab a handful of cereal or granola and squeeze your fist crumbling it up a little then sprinkle it over the fruit (you can add extra honey here to if you want)

Step 5:

Wrap it up!

Step 6:

Cut in half and enjoy!

Folk & Fairy Tale @ The Block St. Block Party

Sunday May 22nd the first Block St. Block Party took place in Fayetteville Arkansas. This was also the first time I have ever worked a booth. For days I worked dawn to dusk prying open little jump rings and clamping down end crimpers. I made 75 hair feather clips. With the help of my unbelievable boyfriend and the company of friends I was able to sit in the hot hot sun from noon to 7:30pm near the corner of Block St. and Spring St. It was a great opportunity to meet people in the community. Local news channel 5 came by and interviewed me. You can see the interview below at the very end of the clip:

POOR DOG FARM... and squirrels

I never mentioned I am a big squirrel lover, since I was a child my father and I would feed the squirrels peanuts and name them, and watch the families grow as tiny squeaky babies were born each spring. We would occasionally save one or two babies that got got pushed out of their nest by their mothers each year. Clean off any nasty maggots and get them back to health then tame them to eat out of our hands or sit on our laps. We devised a very long pole with a can on the end to put them back up in their nest and sometimes the mother changed her mind or was not smart enough to remember she kicked them out and she would let them stay. We did similar hand feeding with the backyard birds as well. It would scare our guests to come out the back door if they were not prepared for the dozens of squirrels and numerous blue jays that flock to your side in anticipation of peanuts as they close in on you. Sometimes you would get a squirrel at the back door peeking in for a peanut. Yes, these squirrels were fatties.

Well sorry if that creeped you out at all, I know that fat one is terrifying. So yea, I love squirrels so when I found Poor Dog Farm, I got excited. Poor Dog Farm has the best painting of a squirrel wearing a hat and a red squirrel king:

Bright Spring Heart!

I fell in love with this fabric when I first saw it. So what better to embroider on it than a heart. On a small 4.5" cross stitch loop I pulled a section of the fabric tight and stitched this cute heart on it with neon yellow beads and bright yellow thick thread. I love how it came out! I put it up for sale in my shop for only $12.50. I can't wait to make more and stitch all different designs. I think it's the perfect little touch for Spring and Summer!

I've had so much fun coming up with names for each new collection I post in my shop "Folk and Fairy Tale". Some new creations I have been working on are below, hope you like them! Still no luck as far as job searching (anyone in the Fayetteville Arkansas area hiring?) I laugh as I type this but I am dead serious! It's been tough to find a job out there in corporate America! <--can't get enough of this song, anyway.. coming from NY where being in online publishing and advertising was in high demand and moving to Arkansas living in a college town has stumped me career wise... Hopefully I will find something soon but till then you will have to hear about my hair feathers. I made these collections while listening to the new Bill Callahan album "Apocalypse" which is just about perfect. I looove me some Bill Callahan, OH that voice! Speaking of favorite voices Alela & The Wild Divine is out and it has been getting tons of play around here as well. If I had a sister I'd wish it was her. She has great talent and gorgeous style. Her new album's band consists of her dad and her husband too! What a life ...

I have been reluctant to try fish oil because of the dreaded seal burps that follow but I will be sure to give this one a try. Also, I was wondering if any veggies out there take any supplements that give them what they are lacking from their diet by not having meat. Comments much appreciated!
