Google planning its own fibre optic network?

Internet giant Google is set to start trialling its very own fibre-optic network, in a bid to improve internet speeds. Trials will begin in the US, with the service being offered to up to 500,000. Google wants to find out what it can achieve with Next Gen internet speeds.

Blogging has evolved very quickly from being an 'online diary' for some, into an effective marketing tool. Small and large companies are busy blogging these days - but why?

Im not going to tell you a blog is instantly going to multiply your sites visitors ten fold. But, if you write interesting and informative content, you will be showcasing your business and reinforcing the fact that you know about your work. A well written blog, with yummy content will attract visitors and give your company quality exposure. Here are 5 tips to help get you blogging:

1. Write about your industry and let your knowledge shine - keep it fresh and interesting.

2. Write as a person and let people see your personality!

3. Read blogs by others that are relative to your industry, and leave constructive, interesting comments. Visitors can then follow a link in your comment back your blog.

4. Keep paragraphs short and leave a clear line space in between them. Content overload can be very off putting.

5. Keep keywords consistant and natural throughout your post. Its helpful for those 'scanning' your post visually and for searchers.

If some of our industry acronyms leave you asking 'what does THAT mean?' then this post could be just what you need! Here are 10 popular references stripped and explained.

CSS - Cascading Style Sheet
CSS is a style sheet that dictates the layout and presentation of a document. The style sheet can be attached to as many pages as you like. One benefit being that you only have to make change to the CSS file to make a change to the layout/presentation, as opposed to changing individual files one at a time.

CMS - Content Management System
A tool that allows the user to change content (within defined areas) within a website.

HTML - Hypertext Markup Language
A language used to write webpages. Browsers read the HTML and display the webpage.

HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocol
A protocol that sets the rules for file exchanges on the Web.

IP - Internet Protocol
Is a basic protocol that allows communication via the internet. An IP address is a series of numbers separated by periods. Each IP address identifies a computer connected to the Internet.

PPC - Pay Per Click
Online advertising system where advertisers pay for clicks into their website.

SEM - Search Engine Marketing
The process of promoting something on the internet. It is usually a combination of efforts, for example, SEO and PPC.

SEO - Search Engine Optimisation
The use of various techniques to improve a websites ranking and exposure to draw more visitors.

SERP - Search Engine Results Page
The pages of results returned by search engines when you search for something.

WYSIWYG (Sounds like 'Wizzywig') - What You See Is What You Get
An interface that allows users to edit content.

Facebook getting 'Fresh'?....

The word on the 'Facebook' grapevine was that our favourite social networking site has been working on an 'improved' version of its newsfeed system.

According to 'The Next Web' Facebook have confirmed that they are testing various designs of the Newsfeed with selected users.

The new upgraded newsfeed is reckoned to feature a specific 'Top News' link, which switches to 'Recent Stories' once clicked. Also, noted from the images I have seen, is the lack of the box where you can write your status, post links and so on. Instead, there is an 'Update Status' button.

The design changes in the shots I have seen, look clean and sleak. This ties in with the previous news of Facebook streamlining and stripping down their design.
