Greetings!

When the newest episode drops on Sunday, there will be a gap in the numbering.

I have gone and re-ordered the episodes to reflect a change in how we are numbering them. Episodes that are not just regular Episodes (OtherGeek, etc.) will just be called Episode ## with the Sub-category next to it as part of the title.

This me a better accounting of how far into the Episodes we are and makes it far easier for me to track them. If you want to get the updates numbers in your feed or iTunes, just Unsubscribe then Resubscribe. I will eventually change how they appear in the RSS root feed, but that is several hours worth of painstaking work.

In this episode the entire gaming group consisting of Scott, Anthony, Will, Rob, and Andrew discuss the path we took through Dogs in the Vineyard. We talk about The Flux rules by John Wick that we took inspiration from as well. We pursue a path that leads us from our D&D roots to playing this character focused small press game.

We do not discuss the mechanics much, but please check out this episode of the Canon Puncture show for a detailed talk about how Dogs plays.

I think it is an insightful conversation that will hopefully interest you in pursuing some games outside of D&D or filing the serial number off of your D&D games to create interesting play sessions.

Cheers!

I don’t know how, but I managed to get two interviews withe the mighty DoubleClicks from Portland. They are the premiere Nerd Folk band and two of the nicest people I have ever met. I interviewed them at Las Vegas’ First Friday event before the played a show with 3d6. We had no place to sit quietly so we talk in a windy alley behind the theater. The interview was fun, and the content was great. The wind rolling over the mic messed up the audio. It was totally unusable. I contacted Angela (songwriter/vocalist) to see if I could interview them again over Skype. She agreed and it was scheduled.

On Father’s Day in June, we reconnected with them and recorded an interview. I noticed during the recording that Skype was acting funky, but the call stayed connected and we continued to talk. After the interview I pulled up the audio and found that it was clipped and broken very badly. I was very upset by this. I tried several methods to fix the clipping, but it was a result of an unstable Skype call so it just didn’t exist in some parts.

I was so upset by this that I put away my pod casting toys for a bit to ponder if I wanted to continue; especially since this is mostly a labor of love. However, this week I decided that we should keep going. I have written up a very light transcript for the interview with the DoubleClicks. The audio is terrible and I don’t want to release it at large. If you want a copy, please just email (getgubarpodcast@gmail.com) me and I’ll send you the mp3.

Posted below is the transcript with links to venues, pod casts, and bands that we discussed. I am not a great writer, but I ran this past Angela and she said that it was okay to post. Read on and Enjoy!

——————————————————————————————-

We go through introductions. Angela is doing most of the talking because Aubrey is having trouble with her voice. I ask her to do a Death Metal voice. That probably isn’t good for vocal recovery.

We recap their recent West Coast tour. They made several stops including: Rebecca’s Coffee House in San Diego, The Library Coffee House in Long Beach, The Nerdist Theater at Meltdown Comics in West Hollywood, The Spot Café and Lounge in Culver City, The Palo Alto House Show in Palo Alto, and Illusive Comics and Games in Santa Clara. It was their largest tour to date and they said that all of the shows were awesome.

We talked about their Northeast and Midwest tours that are in the planning stages.

We discuss tour stops in Minneapolis. They do not yet have a venue set there. They will be there October 4th and 5th. I recommend the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis.

We talk about the release of their new CD called Chainmail and Cello. It is 15 delicious tracks of comedy, heartbreak, nerd rage, and love.

There are 14 new songs with one (This Fantasy World) having been on their 1, 2, 3…Beta Testing EP.

We talk briefly about how they have added a few “F-Bombs” to some of the songs. They took the best songs from their Song-a-Week challenge that they had done where they wrote and released one new song every week. They also took a couple of songs from the Song-Fu contests that they had entered and put them on the album. Angela stated that they are going to try and have a new EP out by PAX this year.

When I had done the, now lost, Interview in an Alley with them on May 4 2012, I had asked them quite a few gaming questions. I got to see them play that evening as well. They are excellent to listen to recorded, but their live show is even better. There is an awkward shyness to Angela as she prepares her instruments and introduces her songs. There is even a tiny bit of back and forth bickering between the siblings as they get synced up to perform. However, when the notes are struck and the show begins, Angela changes into a confident, practiced musician. Aubrey alternately strums and works the bow across her cello strings and meets her sister in chorus to bring soft melody to the whole affair. Needless to say, I was impressed by their performance and it gave me an even better appreciation for what they do. After having seen that I had a few weeks to digest the new CD and watch a few of their videos online. I put together some questions about the topics of their songs, their influences, and their current favorite artists.

I stated that folk music is an unusual genre for teenage kids to get into asked if they had a friend or family member that had turned them on to folk music.

Angela mentions anti-folk music and that their father is a musician and that has influenced them by broadening their musical tastes. She goes on to clarify that they aren’t necessarily a folk band. They play acoustic instruments and the addiction of the cello from Aubrey really creates a sound that is classified as folk.

I asked if they had any particular musical influences. Angela stated that she is influenced by herself and by her sister and that they just do what they are good at. I point out that when I hear their music, unlike some other styles; I cannot pick out a clear influence unlike hearing a three-chord punk band that is strongly influenced by the Ramones. Angela joked that they are also influenced by the Ramones and the Cure.

I ask Aubrey about her cello playing. She states that she played a lot of jazz music in college, but when she moved to Portland she ended up playing more rock and folk. I mention how versatile the cello is and how adept she is at playing it. She talks about how versatile it is and that you would not think that from just looking at the instrument itself.

I asked them about what they listened to while they were driving on tour. They primarily listened to comedy podcasts and Jonathan Coulton. Angela also states that she is much more of a comedy fan than a music fan. They list several podcast that they listen to, but the audio is pretty broken up. Only Paul F. Tompkins and Thrilling Adventure Hour come through clearly.

Anthony and I talk about Doug Stanhope for a minute.

I asked about how many of the songs are influenced by real life events. This is based on the fact that many of their songs are about relationships and breakups. We laugh about it a little, but we don’t get into any details surrounding the events in the songs. I mention that I don’t like that Angela sounds like a bully in the Song “Don’t You Love Me?” She seems a little disappointed, but Anthony comes in and states that he sees it differently and makes a case for why it is a song about leaving a relationship where a person acts like the subject of the song. Angela states that the song is an analogous female version of a song by Jonathan Coulton called “Alone at Home”.

I mention the new song that they wrote about Las Vegas and they state that is was kind of mean spirited, but that they love Las Vegas and will come back in the future.

We briefly talk about games. The Double Clicks really like Lords of Waterdeep. Otherwise they had been very busy and had not played much. Most recently they had played Fiasco and Apocalypse World. They also like Ticket to Ride and Small World.

They will be attending PAX this year. They will be at several other conventions that you should check their website for. They have shows booked at a few places. Check their website for that as well.

NE Tour Starts last week of Sept and goes thru NY ComicCon.

Get their CD on Band camp, iTunes, CD Baby, and their website. Google them!

I thank them profusely!

 <itunes:summary>Oh, you lucky bastards.

GUBAR is back with a complete series of shows from LarryCon III.

We recorded on the plane both ways talking about what we were going to play and then what we had played. Sandwiched in the middle is a 2.5 hour long conversation with several of the other LarryCon attendees.

Listen to them all for the Complete LarryCon Experience!

Each one will be loaded as a separate item on the feed cause they aren't supported to have multiple episodes on a single post.

PlaneCast 1 is up first.

We also talk quite a bit about the journey from being among the teeming masses of D&D/Traditional role-players to discovering the flexibility of the Indy/Small Press games. We cover quite a bit of ground. It was a fun ride.

A Perfect example of how the podcast came to be.

Last night the collaborators who bring you GUBAR all got together for board games. It was to celebrate another visit from Mike Sanchez, the Godfather of Vegas Gaming, whom appeared in Episode 3. We played Power Grid and 7 Wonders and had a great time with both. We almost got in a game of the Resistance but it didn’t quite go down. I highly recommend all 3 games if you haven’t played them or even if you have.

Afterward, Scott and I hung out on the street chatting about gaming as we are apt to do. We did the usual; talked about the current game, the games we want to play in the future and games we’d like to play in a perfect world of unlimited time and resources. This is something that we have done at length since we became friends almost two years ago. The two of us have lofty gaming ambitions so we are excellent at feeding one another’s desire to play games, play them a certain way and plot how to involve our friends to play in those games.

I’ve mentioned this on the show but Scott has a great bit of knowledge regarding games, game developers and the companies who distribute those games or the websites that offer them for sell. This knowledge serves him well when I am postulating about crazy games I want to play since he can recommend the actual system that would be used to to play them. We also do a fair amount of coming up with games to play where we use one game system to play in a setting we find compelling.

One example from our conversation last night was playing Houses of the Blooded in the Pathfinder Society region of Cheliax. Playing a tyrannical and diabolic noble of a house rather than the emotionally charged ven of Houses of the Blooded original setting is something Scott has been talking about since he introduced me to that John Wick creation. Of course, he is drawn to Cheliax because it is a powerful nation that relies on a deal with the devils to stay powerful. He loves him some devils. It must be all that death metal he listens to.

Another game of large scope we discussed was using the Houses of the Blooded mechanic to play a game in which lords of a realm in the Warhammer Fantasy setting are secretly devoted to Chaos and attempting to corrupt that realm. Yes, that would be two uses of Houses of the Blooded mechanic to play games involving evil nobility locked in the power struggles of a nation. I also wanted Houses of Chaos to be the backdrop of a Warhammer 3rd edition RPG. This would allow us to have the larger forces being represented in one game and then the smaller scale heroic struggle on the other with both games affecting one another.

The concept of two intertwined games is one that has always been bouncing around in the back of my mind. Having a larger game being played with one mechanic and another game encapsulated within that setting that allowed for a band of heroes to fight against the forces that pressed upon them is very appealing. Maybe I watched too much Clash of the Titans as a kid. My original thought was to try to have a board game be the overarching campaign and a heroic RPG within it. This is most likely due to my love of geography and my background of playing board games like Risk and Avalon Hill strategy games. Now I think that two RPGs would easily fit that bill and allow for two GMs to share that responsibility by switching off who ran what game depending on the events that transpired in either game. I think this would be extremely rewarding and allow for a group to play a deep story-based roleplaying game that had sweeping consequences and fight some great battles for a cause they believed in.

John Wick’s creations got a lot of discussion as we also discussed the Flux as a way for us to continue playing our deceased D&D characters from Scott’s Numinis campaign. Alas, a TPK ruined some great character camaraderie and development and we all want to continue playing those characters without taking a mulligan on the TPK we suffered. To attempt to play those characters in Numinis would cheapen the risks taken to face the dangers we faced. The Flux will give us the chance to play those characters in a different campaign, due to the death of Numinis thanks to the undead apocalypse that world faced. I look forward to taking up arms next to my brothers in death, in whatever setting and system is next. (I hope it is Dogs in the Vineyard. Shhh….)

Yeah, we did quite a bit of chatting which is exactly what inspired the podcast in the first place. We hope you have enjoyed it thus far. Episode 5 will be out before you know it.

Hello listeners, fans, contributors and lurkers. I just wanted to take the time to apologize for the lack of content the last two months. We still want to provide what we hope is a fun, funny and informative show about gaming and life as a gamer but the months of November and December were very busy for this particular gamer. I moved and got a new job (read: ended two years of unemployment) in addition to all of the craziness that comes with that particular time of the year. I have finally gotten used to my schedule and no longer have to work 5o hour weeks so hopefully we can get the podcast on some sort of regular schedule.

We finally have Episode 3 out, which is pretty good if you ask me and both Episodes 4 and 5 are recorded. We have redone the intro and almost gotten the show format figured out so that they will have some consistency from episode to episode. Please feel free to leave us feedback at this site or follow our Facebook page and comment there.

Thanks for listening to us ramble about gaming topics and look for new ways to interact with the GUBAR show in the future. We appreciate you being patient and continuing to listen.

Anthony

Greetings!!!

We are back! After a mix of holiday silliness and schedule conflicts we finally have things all worked out and are ready to get back on the podcasting wagon.

This episode is a long interview with The Mighty Mike Sanchez and how the Las Vegas game day and related events got started. There is some general advice on starting and maintaining a gaming community, but the episode is not wall to wall gaming talk. It is pretty funny though, so I still recommend a listen.

I am aware of some sound issues that occur when the file is converted to mp3 and I am still playing with the equipment to get try and get everything optimized. If you have any issues please post here or email us at getgubarpodcast@gmail.com.

Cheers!
