“Part of the mission of Guerrilla Football is to make a difference in the World through the game of soccer,” said Guerrilla Football Founder Mati Bishop.

“Fair Trade Sports is dedicated to making sport a very visible proponent of fair treatment for the people who make the products we use in our day to day life. Soccer is the game of the people and people, especially children, shouldn’t suffer so that we can enjoy it,” he continued.

Learn more about the issues involved with Child and Unfair labor practices in Naomi Klein’s 2004 book No Logo.

The Fair Trade Sport soccer balls are produced by adult workers at a fair trade certified production company in Pakistan using rubber harvested in responsibly managed forests.

“The quality of the soccer balls is quite good,” said Bishop. “The cost is comparable to the same style made by Nike or Adidas,” he finished.

The use of child labor in sports manufacturing was brought to the American public in a 1996 issue of Life Magazine that featured a photo of a young Pakistani child working in a factory producing Nike soccer balls.

Read an American University Case Study of Nike’s Involvement with Child Labor

Since that photo Nike has become the whipping boy of the anti-child labor movement, but in an industry that subcontracts nearly all of its production to the cheapest bidder almost always in areas with little or no regulation of child labor practices, many feel that Nike is taking the brunt of the anger for what is an industry wide practice.

“Players and fans of the World’s game are some of the most socially conscious people that I run across,” Bishop said. “If there is a group who is going to stand up and say no to the exploitation that has become common practice in the production of the sporting equipment we use, I’m confident it will be soccer players and fans.”

Bishop and Fair Trade Sports founder Scott James first met in 2007 and put together a very small promotional campaign for the Sounders Legion.

“Scott found a gap in the Fair Trade line of products and filled it. He’s a visionary in that regard,” said Bishop. “Prior to Fair Trade Sports, there was no real alternative to buying a soccer ball that might have been produced in a sweat shop by a small child.”

Through the affiliate program, Fair Trade Sports contributes a percentage of all profits generated by shoppers clicking through GuerrillaFootball.com to the Fair Trade Sports online store back to supporting the semi-pro and amateur broadcasts on GuerrillaFootball.com.

“Guerrilla Football’s affiliation with Fair Trade Sports is the beginning of what I see as the future of sports sponsorship,” said Bishop. “The situation is not only a win-win for Fair Trade Sports and GuerrillaFootball.com, but also for the workers manufacturing the balls in Pakistan, the high level semi-pro and amateur players gaining exposure in the Northwest, the environment in the areas where the rubber for the balls is harvested responsibly and players with a social conscious who want their choices to make a difference when they purchase equipment,” he concludes.

Human Health Concerns
It’s the rubber infill pellets that have caused the most controversy about synthetic playing surfaces in relation to human health. Often times these pellets are made from discarded tires, which are illegal to dispose of in landfills in all but eight states. Although most of the restriction on the disposal of used tires in landfills are designed to prevent tire fires and control rodent populations, environmental organizations have argued that the arsenic, cadmium, lead and nickel released into the atmosphere when tires are burned can be released into the atmosphere over longer durations of time when the tires are used for synthetic field surfaces.

The most potentially dangerous elements to humans have been identified as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and volatile organic compounds (VOC). A study entitled Artificial Turf Pitches: An Assessment of the Health Risks for Football Players by researches at the Norwegian Health Institute in 2006 showed that VOCs can be aerosolized during sports play and inhaled by athletes. Despite the fact, the report concluded that there was no added health risk, even to children, in playing on a synthetic surface.

In 2007 the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) released a report entitled Evaluation of Health Effects of Recycled Waste Tires in Playground and Track Products that indicated that children playing on synthetic surfaces during the first twelve years of life could have a “slightly higher” risk of developing cancer. The report noted that it was contact with the suspected human carcinogen chrysene, found in tire rubber, produced a cancer risk of 2.9 in 1 million through hand to mouth contact with rubber infill. The di minimus risk threshold is 1 in 1 million.

The studies conducted to date have yet to find the “smoking gun” concerning field turf fields and human health that many opponents have been searching for. Based on current information, there is potential for health related issues, but evidence has not been presented, to me as a consumer anyway, that shows increased health risk greater than those I face everyday in the air and water that I consume from playing on synthetic field surfaces.

The Environmental Debate
Anyone who has ever tried to run barefoot across a synthetic field on a hot summer days learned painfully that the surface reaches much higher temperatures than natural grass. These are essentially black rubber surfaces that attract and hold heat from sunlight, but the added heat of the fields is a small price to pay for the lack of fertilizers and pesticides that are often used on grass fields, not to mention the gasoline exhaust from the lawnmowers used in regular maintenance of grass fields.

On Bainbridge Island in Washington State a website called plasticfieldsfornever.org has popped up opposing the use of synthetic fields in Bainbridge Island. The site brings forth the argument of preservation of green space and natural grass fields for future generations. The site also asks visitors to sign a petition opposing the use of synthetic surfaces by the Bainbridge Island School Board.

Runoff from the toxic chemicals found in synthetic turf’s rubber fill has the potential to cause damage to waterways and can introduce toxins into environments from the bottom up, destroying and poisoning the bottom levels of the food chain and creating unbalanced and ineffective ecosystems according to studies on used tires at Bucknell University.

My Two Cents
Nobody wants poison in their own backyard and nobody wants to see ecosystems damaged, but the truth is that these used tires are out there destroying ecosystems anyway and what many folks are complaining about is having the rubber from the used tires for their SUV causing damage in their own backyard, rather than where they are currently causing damage and that’s where folks not as privileged as themselves are forced to live. These toxins are entering into our environment at alarming rates and arguing and regulating the point of entry is not going to solve the problem in the long term. Until we see a top down shift of consumer habits in this country that results in the end of the use of toxins in our day to day lives, synthetic turf fields may be the least of our worries.

Synthetic turf fields certainly appear to produce a health hazard to frequent users. They are made of products that contain toxic chemicals and most likely lead to an increased risk of the development of cancer in their users. I want to have children who will grow up knowing what it is like to play on grass fields, but when it comes to concerns about health or the environment, synthetic fields are pretty low on my list of problems that need to be addressed.

The air we breathe is toxic. The plastic that our way of life is built on is made from petroleum. The corporations who produce the modern luxuries that we all enjoy have been dumping poison into our air and water for over 100 years. Corporate farming and cattle production is putting genetic mutations with unknown consequences directly into our food supply. Humanity as a whole faces many problems that we must develop solutions to, but until we change society to the point where we begin to run low on the used tires that the fields are made of, it’s highly unlikely that synthetic turf fields will be among the greatest dangers to our health and environment that we face.

In fact, synthetic fields will help with one of the most pressing issues humanity will face over the course of the next 75 years and that is the availability of adequate amounts of fresh drinking water. For communities with water shortages, the idea of saving 1.5 million gallons of water per field per year is probably a pretty good one.

Rather than deciding it’s harmful to play on synthetic surfaces, I encourage you to get the exercise and enjoyment you get from playing soccer and take one day out of the week to head to the mountains and enjoy some fresh air and natural environment.

We’ve got a lot of changes to make as a society and as a species. Take a moment right now and find a way that you can use less energy and generate less pollution in your daily life. Now commit to it.

One great way to save energy and be part of the solution is to ride the bus our to join me on May 10th to see the new turf at Qwest Field when the Seattle Sounders host the Portland Timbers in their 2008 USL First Division season home opener.

<img src="http://www.fairtradesports.com/gearshop/affiliate_show_banner.php?ref=13&affiliate_banner_id=5" border="0" alt="New! The history includes 10 years in the North American Soccer League, and 14 seasons in the United Soccer Leagues First Division. The Sounders legacy is now set to continue on into Major League Soccer beginning in 2009.

During their time in the NASL, the Sounders appeared in Soccer Bowl (the NASL Championship Match) twice and enjoyed fan support that rivaled the best in the league. From 1983 to 1994 there wasn't a top level team carrying the name Sounders.

In 1994 the Seattle Sounders joined the A-League, which later became the USL First Division and began a 15 season run that has included titles in 1995, 1996, 2005 and 2007.

In April of 2008, it was announced that the Major League Soccer expansion franchise beginning play in Seattle in 2009 would be called the Seattle Sounders. The decision was the result of a grass roots effort by the Emerald City Supporters and many of the readers of GoalSeattle.com to save the Sounders name and tradition.

More information about the USL First Division Seattle Sounders at SeattleSounders.net

More information and the Major League Soccer Seattle Sounders FC at SoundersFC.com

Related Topics
USL First Division
USL First Division News and Features
Major League Soccer

The USL First Division

The USL First Division has brings professional soccer to cities ranging from Vancouver
