Shannon Jackson Joins WWP in 2012

WWP wants to welcome Shannon Marie Whitlow Jackson into our family! Shannon just completed her first week with us on BHI and is going to be a fantastic Rentals Manager!!

Shannon Jackson comes to us from Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. Born in Wisconsin and growing up in Grand Blanc Michigan, she moved to North Carolina to be near her family and retired parents. Shannon enlisted in the U. S. Air Force after graduation from high school, which continued a long family heritage of military service. She was stationed at Travis Air Force Base and Kadena Air base in Okinawa, Japan during her tour of duty. Due to her exemplary service, Shannon received many awards and promotions, including the Silent Warrior Award, Senior Airman Below the Zone Award, the 12th Fighter Squadron Airman of the Quarter, the 18th Wing Logistics Professional of the Year, and was nominated for the Pacific Air Forces Logistics Professional of the Year.

Upon her return to civilian life, Shannon relocated to Sunset Beach, North Carolina and started her professional life at Sea Trail Golf Resort and Convention Center as the Front Desk Representative, and later the Assistant Long Term Rental specialist and the Long Term Rental Specialist. During her time at Sea Trail, Shannon earned an Associate’s degree in Arts from Brunswick Community College. She continued her education at UNC Wilmington, majoring in History. During her college years she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Student Government Vice President at BCC and one of the founders and Captain of the first BCC Cheerleader Squad. After a change in Management at Sea Trail, she continued those duties in addition to becoming the Assistant to the Director of Property Management. Shannon Comes to WWP with a wealth of experience, knowledge, and a background steeped in dedication to excellence.

Shannon is married to Joe and they have a young son, Jacob, and she is deeply dedicated to her family and enjoys volunteering at her son's school when the opportunity arises. Her passions are family, reading and her faith and she strives to live by three core values: “Integrity, Excellence and Service above Self."

Register Your Cart Before December 31st … Online!

Public Safety has begun issuing Golf Cart Registrations. Current registrations expire on December 31st, so please make sure that you get re-registered BEFORE then. Proof of liability insurance will be required at time of registration. You need to include the cart’s make/model, serial number, effective policy dates and numbers, as well as the name of the insuring agency. New proof of insurance is required with current activation dates. For convenience, you can fax your paperwork to the Department of Public Safety at 910-457-4585 prior to registration.

Registrations can also now be done online...

FIRST TIME REGISTRATIONS:

The initial registration of a golf cart (first time on island, initial application) must be completed at the Department of Public Safety with staff. Measurements of the cart must be taken to reflect current village ordinance. Cart must meet requirements as specified in village ordinance. Staff shall affix a numbered sticker to the lowest, most clearly visible point on the front left-side of the electric cart and one sticker on the rear of the electric cart. The small yearly sticker will be placed on the surface of the registration sticker in the bottom corner.

Per Village Ordinance, liability coverage must be provided during registrations. The coverage must meet the standards set by the NCDMV. This can be accomplished by the golf cart owner attesting to said insurance requirements by providing the company and policy number and signing affirming same. No part of a first-time registration can be completed online.

You may register your golf cart for the $15 annual fee at the Department of Public Safety Monday thru Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM. After hours or weekend registrations can be arranged via appointment by calling 910-448-1252.

The Old Baldy Foundation has announced that official North Carolina license plates featuring Old Baldy are now available for order.

The license plates, which will feature Old Baldy, are more than just a way to express your love for Bald Head Island. $20 from each plate also goes to support the Old Baldy Foundation. Be among the first to order your Old Baldy license plate – the DMV requires 300 completed applications in order to process the first order and the Old Baldy Foundation is accepting them now.

Applications are available online through the Old Baldy Foundation’s website. Regular Old Baldy plates are $30, personalized Old Baldy plates are $60.

Food Drive to Benefit Brunswick Family Assistance

Thanksgiving is a good time to remember how blessed we are and to share those blessings with others who are less fortunate.

To that end, BHA is sponsoring a food drive to help Brunswick Family Assistance (BFA) build its food pantry for the Thanksgiving holiday. BFA provides emergency assistance to qualified low-income families in Brunswick County.

Please consider helping by bringing non-perishable food items to one of three collection sites on the Island. Bins will be available at the Maritime Market, the Post Office lobby and the BHA office from Tuesday, November 1st through Friday, November 11th. Real Estate Sales and Rentals are continuing to be the perfect match at WWP. The two divisions truly bring our clients the “Best Of Bald Head.”

Our REAL ESTATE clients are benefiting from the new contacts we are making through our rental program, and RENTAL OWNERS are benefiting from our sales agents’ long term relationships with Island owners and prospects.

C.A.R.E. Project to Visit Bald Head

These Families Need Your Support

On November 9, 2011, counselors are arriving to meet on Bald Head Island and on Thursday, Nov 10th, many families will arrive for the meeting/workshop. In support of this remarkable program, BHI residents and local businesses have really stepped up and more than satisfied the housing needs for the families and attending counselors!

While the housing has been squared away, there is still budgetary needs for providing the group of 50+ guests with ferry tickets, parking, food, golf carts as needed, and other smaller expenses. The estimated need is around $6000. Every dollar counts and we are asking for everyone to give what they can to this outstanding cause. This is a 503(c) 3 non profit, which means that a donation of any pecuniary value may be tax deductable.

The CARE Project is devoted to family emotional support. The goals for the retreat are:

1. To create a sense of community among families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing

2. To bring comfort and knowledge to the parents in attendance

3. To connect families to resources and other families for information and support

Families will spend time together with other families, parents will spend time with staff on a variety of topics, children will have planned activities allowing parents to be in the workshops....lots of opportunities to enjoy, relax and learn! In the end, these families will leave this experience feeling better about their children, their lives and looking forward to a future filled with hope!

C.A.R.E. Project to Visit Bald Head

Local BHI property owner, Johnny Sexton, established a nonprofit foundation in the past couple of years, called The C.A.R.E. Project (Counseling, Audiologic Rehabilitation and Education). The primary mission of this foundation is to provide opportunities, materials and emotional counseling for families with children (or adults) who are deaf or hard of hearing. C.A.R.E. received an official 501c3 Public Charity designation in January, 2011.

In order to achieve the goals set forth for C.A.R.E., which include expanding materials to help children/families who face disabilities in addition to deafness, translation of materials into other languages and the establishment of a living journal, C.A.R.E. has set out on a fund raising effort. The first fund raising event took place on Friday evening, September 23, 2011 in Wilmington, NC. This event was an incredible success, drawing the attentions of several mayoral representatives, including Mayor Andy Sayre from Bald Head Island.

On November 9, 2011, counselors are arriving to meet on Bald Head Island and on Thursday, Nov 10th, nine families will arrive for the meeting/workshop. BHI Limited has graciously donated dormitory rooms for the families & counselors. In support of this remarkable program, WWP is currently looking for an additional 5-6 houses (15 bedrooms) for arrival on Wednesday, 11/9, to leave Sunday, 11/13.

The Ladies of BHI Golf for Providence Home

The Ladies Invitational Tournament was hosted this past Monday, with a full field of 104 golfers. The sun was shining and the temperature was in the low 70's… a perfect day for golf! Each of the ladies events this year has been spectacular. Once again, the Bald Head Island Club did an outstanding job on food. We enjoyed a continental breakfast, fresh grilled lunch, hors d'oeuvres and open bar after play.

Justin and his staff welcomed visitors from the ferry, toted golf bags, set up the golf carts and had us off for a 10:30 shotgun. The course was in beautiful shape and it was a great way to showcase our club. The event ran so smoothly because of the hard work of the pro shop. There were 104 ladies with smiles on their faces all day. That is amazing!

We raised $4,464.00 for Providence Home. As a surprise, the employees of the club gathered together shampoo, toothpaste, hair brushes, books and DVD's and made baskets for the children at Providence Home. They found out there were currently three boys living there so they threw in footballs and soccer balls. We were all very touched by their efforts. Our charity this year seemed to speak to all the mothers, daughters and sisters. Everyone wanted to help the children.

Captain Charlie's Kid's Fishing Tournament

This Saturday, October 1st, the Southport Pier will be home to kids of all ages, competing for prizes in the Captain Charlie's Kid's Fishing Tournament. Registration begins at 8:30 AM, with the tournament to follow from 9AM – 12PM. Prizes will be awarded in 4 different age groups ranging from 16 years old to under 5 years old. Timber Bridge Plans Developing

The Village briefed residents on September 16th at its monthly Village Council meeting on progress toward the construction of the proposed Timber Bridge from the Harbor area to N. Bald Head Wynd. The proposed bridge will extend from the Keelson Row area across the marsh and connect to a new intersection with N. Bald Head Wynd, W. Bald Head Wynd and Lighthouse Wynd. Clearing has commenced on the project, with construction to begin soon!

Bald Head Island Public Flu Vaccine Announcement from Chief Munna

The Department of Public Safety will be sponsoring an on-island influenza vaccination clinic.

Flu Vaccine Clinic

Date: Thursday, October 20, 2011 Time: 8:40 a.m. to noon Location: The Public Safety Operations Building at 251 Edward Teach Ext.

The cost for the “Regular Flu” shot is $35. The cost for the “High Dose” is $50 (High Dose is for individuals 65 years of age and older). Monies are payable to the Brunswick County Health Department. The following insurances are accepted: United Health Care, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, Tricare, Medcost, Medicaid and Medicare. Please BRING A COPY OF YOUR INSURANCE CARD that can be retained by the Health Department staff.

There are also forms that need to be completed by each participant prior to receiving the vaccine. Please stop in at Village Hall or the Department of Public Safety to pick up your form in advance and save you some time the day of the clinic. Please note that the forms are different for “Regular Dose” and “High Dose.”

As with any vaccine, it is recommended that if you have any questions or concerns, call your medical provider/physician or the Brunswick County Health Department at 910-253-2250.

To ensure there is enough vaccine on hand that day, please call the Department of Public Safety at 910-457-5252 with your name, vaccine type preferred, and contact number.

The C.A.R.E. Project

Local BHI property owner, Johnny Sexton, established a nonprofit foundation in the past couple of years, called The CARE Project. The primary mission of this foundation is to provide opportunities, materials and emotional counseling for families with children (or adults) who are deaf or hard of hearing. CARE received an official 501c3 Public Charity designation in January, 2011.

In order to achieve the goals set forth for CARE, which include expanding materials to help children/families who face disabilities in addition to deafness, translation of materials into other languages and the establishment of a living journal, CARE has set out on a fund raising effort.

If you are not familiar with The CARE Project, visit their website and take a look! You may also, click on this link to view a 16 minute short version of the documentary.

The CARE Project is now beginning to grow across the U.S. and into an international community, as it seems to be unique in addressing the grief and emotions experienced by families. CARE also is providing a great deal of assistance to the professionals who work with these families.

The first fund raising event is set for Friday evening, September 23, 2011 in Wilmington, NC. A critical component of CARE has been the documentary film produced which gives tremendous insight into family journeys as they process the feelings and emotions they experience with deafness. The World Premiere of the new feature documentary, The CARE Project: A Journey To Resilience, will be the center piece of a wonderful evening of entertainment.

A comfortable sectional couch is the perfect spot for the weary traveler to watch television on the large flat screen. Bring your favorite DVD or VHS because nearly every television in this house has both. In case you forgot that book or movie, enjoy one of many books, DVDs and VHS cassettes that the homeowner has supplied. The living room also has a gas fireplace operational during the winter months. Bring your dreams of becoming Emeril Lagasse in the fully equipped kitchen complete with almost any and all cookware to make your favorite succulent dish. Complete with custom cherry cabinets and plenty of granite countertops that will allow you to stretch out for prepping. The island even has a small sink conveniently located behind the six-burner Wolf range. Stock up on plenty of food and keep it cool in the Sub Zero fridge, or even use the extra refrigerator located in the garage.

From the living room and kitchen, walk directly on the front porch and grab one of the many rocking chairs to enjoy the view. This is one of the few houses with a hot tub located on the porch with a clear view of the ocean. Down the steps to the private beach access is a large teak table with seating for at least eight people. This comes in handy when the hot dogs and hamburgers you fix are ready from the adjacent large gas grill. The two downstairs bedrooms each have a queen bed. One bedroom is located on the ocean side of the house which has its own private bathroom and private exit to the front porch. The other bedroom is located just across the hallway that has a library of books, VHS cassettes and DVDs that any guest is welcome to use while staying at the house. Both bedrooms are complete with their own flat screen televisions, DVD player and VHS cassette player.

Upstairs, the open loft accommodates two twin trundle beds. These twin beds are easily large enough for an adult. Also the loft has a large flat screen television, VHS/DVD player, and games for everyone to enjoy on the large sofa. Next to loft is the master bedroom. This exquisite bedroom will make anybody leave all of their worries behind as they awaken to the overview of the Atlantic Ocean at the foot of their bed. Enjoy the view without even leaving the bed, or open the two sliding glass doors and walk out on the private covered balcony attached to the bedroom. This bedroom is very spacious and equipped with its own TV/VCR/DVD. The walk-in closet even has its own full sized crib. The master bedroom also has its own private bath with his and hers sinks. Cleanse your body and your soul with the best viewing shower you will have ever used. This particular shower has a stunning ocean-view with two windows directly in the shower. Enjoy either the rain showerhead or normal shower wand.

This has been a truly impressive year for sales on Bald Head Island. The average total Island sales YTD from 2007 through 2010 has been 30 properties. So far, YTD 2011, the Island has sold 49 properties, with one additional property currently pending and 10 currently active contingent!

It may also interest you to know that the total annual average sales price for 2007-2010 was $746,875. With only half of 2011 behind us, the average sales price is currently $662,870. We are gaining speed and have set a new course toward a revived real estate market. We still have a long road ahead of us, but we are expecting a smoother ride.
